Several of India’s most talented music acts have been selected to perform at a major arts festival, Scotland’s External Affairs Minister Humza Yousaf announced in India last week.
The surge of Indian talent performing at the Glasgow festival follows the signing of a historic three-year reciprocal performing agreement between Celtic Connections and Rajasthan International Folk Festival (RIFF) last year. Celtic Connections also marks the beginning of the cultural calendar for the 2014 Commonwealth Games. Humza Yousaf, Scottish External Affairs Minister, said:
exhibitions, workshops, and free events. Showcase Scotland at Celtic Connections – the largest gathering of the international music community in Scotland – provides a selection of Scottish and overseas acts with the valuable opportunity of performing in front of promoters, record labels and agents from over 20 different countries. Now in its 15th year, Showcase Scotland is organised by Active Events on behalf of Celtic Connections. It was initiated by Creative Scotland and British Council Scotland to provide a platform for promoting Scottish music and artists to new audiences around the world. The international exposure that artists gain at Showcase Scotland can lead to record deals and overseas touring contracts.

November sees Ricky and Gregor head out again and Kinross-shire Music Festival will be their second festival appearance, the other in Somerset at Glastonbury. Gregor Philp is one of Dundee’s most popular musical sons and has had a career which takes in projects working with Michael Marra and David Byrne. Admiral Fallow, The Twilight Sad plus RSNO light up Paisley Abbey A highlight of Paisley's recent 'Spree' festival saw Scottish Album of the Year Award nominees Admiral Fallow and the Twilight Sad perform in the stunning setting of Paisley abbey alongside the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. The show, part of the ten-day arts festival in the town, was the brainchild of hometown lad and Radio 1 DJ Ally McCrae. With four and five star reviews already peppering the web it was a special show that those that were there those lucky enough to be there will not forget in a hurry, with many commenting they want to see more concerts of a similar formula in the Abbey. The Spree was back after a successful debut in 2012 and this year ran alongside the Royal National Mòd, Scotland’s premier celebration of Gaelic culture and language, on its first-ever visit to Paisley. With a packed house waiting patiently, The Twilight Sad took to the stage with an atmospheric darkness and treated the capacity crowd to a full 45 minutes of haunting vocals backed by a much stripped back band and a perfectly fitting orchestral score. The crowd responded with a full two minutes of standing ovation. Front man James Graham said as he left the stage, “It’s been such an experience sharing the stage with so many talented musicians. It was quite a daunting experience and not one I’ve fully taken in. The venue, the orchestra and the crowd were excellent. It’s a show I will definitely look back on with a huge smile on my face.” Admiral Fallow appeared shortly after and wowed the crowd with songs from both their albums; with their flute-and-accordion-backed harmonies mixing beautifully with the strings of the orchestra to create a sonic spectacular. The highlight of the set was an acappella version of Four Bulbs, set against the hushed silence of the Abbey crowd. Admiral Fallow's Louis Abbott said, “Stepping away from the mic was a really terrifying experience. We've played Four Bulbs in a lot of places but it was pretty special to do it in the abbey. I think the highlight for us was hearing songs we've lived with for years be transformed into completely new animals. I watched the Twilight Sad set and thought they were incredible." Ally McCrae added, “What an unbelievable show. I don’t know if I will be able to go to a gig without an orchestra again. I want to thank Admiral Fallow, The Twilight Sad and the RSNO for helping make it such a remarkable experience. Having been overawed by Paisley Abbey as a youngster, to come here now and be park of such a special event is unbelievable. It is very exciting to see Paisley having such a buzz around it and hopefully this is just a sign of what is to come!”

Carlisle Blues & Rock Festival Carlisle November 8-10 The highly acclaimed Carlisle Blues Festival celebrated five incredibly exciting and successful years with a weekend event in November 2011 which many regarded as the best UK blues festival of the year. 2012 even surpassed that cementing the event as one of the top three of its kind in the country. The key to the success of the Carlisle Blues & Rock Festival has always been the consistent strength of the line up and its refusal to be restricted within a genre. It doesn’t guarantee to please all of the people all of the time but it does promise to please the vast majority of the audience for the most part of the time. Whatever happens the Carlisle festival in 2013 promises another feast of the very best in real live music. Would you want to miss out? http://carlislebluesfestival.com/
