It’s here to reclaim music from shiny floored studios and give it back to the fans, each episode crackling with an energy and vibrancy that comes from a mix of crowdpleasing favourites and exciting breakthrough acts. The headliners go back to their roots, playing intimate, electric sets to diehard fans, and the post-industrial aesthetic of derelict spaces lend the show a unique visual style reflecting the spare, down and dirty performances from emerging stars and seasoned professionals. 'New Waves' - the SNJO invite you to celebrate the extraordinary music of two legendary names in 20th Century music: the inimitable Antonio Carlos Jobim and the irrepressible ‘Fats’ Waller. Antonio Carlos Jobim was the foremost composer of authentic Brazilian bossa nova and samba styled popular jazz, and his crossover projects with Stan Getz made him a household name. Jazz musicians have long been influenced by their music and few are better placed than saxophonist Tommy Smith, Brazilian guitarist Mario Caribe, and vocalist Irini Arabatzi alongside the SNJO to articulate the aspirational and escapist nature of this cool, soft, and sinuous music. The jazz pianist Thomas ‘Fats’ Waller has been immortalized in print, on record and screen and was an influential, gamechanging composer and instrumentalist. He will be lovingly restored as the SNJO visits Waller’s popular repertoire. Few pianists are more qualified to bring fresh interpretations to Waller’s challenging innovations than Scotland’s Brian Kellock. www.snjo.co.uk 6 MAY Brookfield Knights presents ..... THE FRETLESS: At TradFest, Edinburgh. MultiJuno award-winning Canadian supergroup The Fretless (2017 Instrumental Album of The Year) also picked up two nominations in the Canadian Folk Music Awards (Best Contemporary Album and Instrumental Group of The Year). Renowned Austin, Texas-based folk-Americana singer-songwriter Danny Schmidt has four Scottish dates in May in support of his widely acclaimed new album Standard Deviation. Named in the Chicago Tribune's 50 Most Significant Songwriters in the Last 50 Years, Danny has amassed a cult following for his poetic, poignant lyrics. With a craftsmanship and emotional depth drawing comparisons to Leonard Cohen and Townes Van Zandt, and with fantastical narratives reminiscent of Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Salman Rushdie, Schmidt is considered a preeminent writer. Performing solo almost exclusively, armed with just his voice, his acoustic guitar, and his acute commentary, Schmidt's an authentic timeless troubadour, one man sharing his truth in the form of songs, unadorned and intimate. The understated effect can be powerful. As songwriter Jeffrey Foucault put it: "Everything about the man is gentle, except for his capacity for insight, which is crushing.” www.dannyschmidt.com
