Email them to Carol carol.musicnewsscotland@gmail.com 15 AUGUST DEAN OWENS AND THE FELSONS - Cash Back (Songs I Learned From Johnny): At Central Hall (Just Festival - venue 295) 2 West Tollcross, EH3 9BP. 20.30 (22.30) £12. Fringe Box Office 0131 226 0000. For 1 night only - in the gorgeous setting of the converted church space at new Fringe venue Just Festival at Central Hall. Dean Owens is one of Scotland’s most acclaimed and established singer songwriters, with fans including Ricky Ross, Bob Harris, Irvine Welsh and Russell Brand. His songs Raining in Glasgow and Man From Leith have been hailed as classics of Scottish songwriting. Cash Back (Songs I Learned from Johnny) is based on Dean’s acclaimed 2012 album of the same name. While it’s very much inspired by Johnny Cash, this isn’t a “tribute show” – the radar is set wider. Some of the songs were written by Cash, some were covered by him and some were inspired by listening to him. www.deanowens.com http://just-festival.org/ 15 AUGUST FIONA SOE PAING: (Also other dates) At Summerhall, Edinburgh. Alien Lullabies, part of the Made In Scotland showcase. It's on from the 12-16 and 19-23 August at 10:35. GREG TROOPER: At The Blue Lamp, Aberdeen, 7.30pm, £12/ £10adv. Greg Trooper is a singer/ songwriter who has released 12 albums since 1986. Raised in the shore town of Little Silver, NJ he became enthralled by the greater New York area’s rich music scene. He discovered a sort of holy musical trinity in the work of Otis Redding, Bob Dylan, and Hank Williams, with their guiding lights of passion, literary dexterity and plainspoken honesty. It’s one reason Trooper’s music feels equally informed by Memphis soul, Greenwich Village folk and Nashville twang. Trooper has made an impact on the music scenes in all the places he’s lived since leaving home after high school: Austin, Texas, Lawrence, Kansas, Nashville and New York. Music critics praise his poetic feel, infectious melodies and insightful lyrics. Americana star Buddy Miller produced 1998’s ‘Popular Demons’ album, while soul legend Dan Penn steered 2005’s extraordinary ‘Make It Through This World’. www.AlmostBluePromotions.com www.gregtrooper.com
