In January 2005, three generations of the same family lost their lives on one tragic night as they tried to flee the hurricane that was battering the islands. Murdina and Archie MacPherson and their two children all perished, as did Murdina’s father, Calum Campbell. Calum, who was 67, was well known as a piper and piping instructor and had also composed some tunes. The extent of his compositional work wasn’t apparent until his son Niall embarked on the difficult task of sorting through his father’s effects. He found pieces of paper with tunes and notes of the stories that had inspired them, and Niall realized that he had discovered something very special. As 2015 approached, the family wanted to find a way of creating a positive memory for the family and the community, and the idea of publishing a book of Calum’s tunes was first mooted. MacTV followed the family’s journey as they turned the idea into reality in Calum’s Music. www.bbcalba.co.uk TIREE MUSIC FESTIVAL – URBAN TEUCHTARS: 11pm on BBC ALBA. DANIEL ROMANO + KACY & CLAYTON: At The Tunnels, Aberdeen. 7.30pm. The

upcoming album is named after how he describes his own music. “Mosey music is a study in contrasts. There’s glitz and grit, reveling and wallowing, wretchedness and showmanship. Mosey music’s pioneers wore their battered hearts on sequined sleeves. From Bakersfield to Galveston, the legends traded their tragicomic highs and lows for gold records and white Cadillacs. But that was then; the days of Buckaroos, Nudie Suits and various Hanks are over, save for the museum displays. On this tour Daniel Romano has invited Kacy & Clayton to open up for him and his band. A duo from the wood mountain uplands of Southern Saskatchewan that gently melts British and North American folk tradition together and create something timeless and captivating. www.almostbluepromotions.com 18 SEPTEMBER Almost Blue Promotions presents ….. CAHALEN MORRIOSON & ELI WEST: At The Blue Lamp, Aberdeen. 8pm. Cahalen Morrison & Eli West are, simply put, two of the most innovative and subtle roots musicians today. Their music draws from old folk sources, but it sounds vibrantly alive. Cahalen Morrison writes songs that sound like a Cormac McCarthy novel: simple, beautifully crafted, and seemingly formed from raw natural elements. Eli West brings jagged, angular arrangements based in bluegrass and old-time, but refracted through a 21st century lens. www.almostbluepromotions.com
