MUSIC NEWS Scotland GIGguide page 11: edinburgh + mid - east - west lothian :: glasgow + area Concert, Edinburgh. Touring Scotland for the first time is a unique collaboration between Charlie Grey, Ryan Young, Owen Sinclair and Joseph Peach. The four have united to explore shared ideas of an alternative approach to traditional music. The project is an extension of Charlie and Joe’s fiddle/piano duo. Ryan has been described as "leading a new wave of traditional Scottish fiddle-players”. His passion is for the very old, often forgotten tunes, which he brings back to life in his thoughtful, sympathetic and utterly unique way. Alongside Owen Sinclair on guitar and vocals, they’re exploring the mellow and reflective. Sensitive accompaniment from the piano and guitar creates atmospheres within which the fiddles can explore the melodies to the depths, bringing light to their full possibilities, and transporting audiences. www.facebook.com/cgjpmusic www.facebook.com/ryanyoungmusic

MUSIC NEWS Scotland GIGguide page 20: aberdeen + north east :: highlands + west coast + argyll the heart of The Danberrys is the Tennesseeborn couple of Ben DeBerry and Dorothy Daniel a truly unique pair of artists hailing from East Nashville, Tennessee. Drawing deep from the traditions of bluegrass, old-time country, blues, and funk/soul, the Danberrys offer inspired songwriting delivered with raw emotion, distinct vocal harmonies, and dynamic, top-notch musicianship. Rather than responding to a dictated sound, their music further displays the near limitless nature of the Americana genre. "Now in our 4th Year, Almost Blue Promotions continue to bring the best of independent Americana and Roots music to Aberdeen. The Skids formed in 1977 in their home town of Dunfermline, Scotland by Richard Jobson, Stuart Adamson, Bill Simpson & Tom Kellichan. After releasing an independent single the band were played by John Peel, supported The Clash in concert and then were signed to Virgin Records in 1978. Their first singles were ‘Sweet Surburbia’, ‘The Saints are Coming’ and ‘Into the Valley’ - the latter reaching the UK Top Ten in early 1979. Their seminal debut album ‘Scared to Dance’; came out in 1979. Skids briefly reformed in 2007 to celebrate the band's 30th Anniversary with concerts in their native Scotland at T in the Park and in their hometown of Dunfermline. The 40th Anniversary Tour will feature Richard Jobson, Bill Simpson, Mike Baillie, Bruce Watson & Jamie Watson. The Filthy Tongues have occupied a unique place at the heart of Scottish alternative rock, in various manifestations, since the mid 80’s. The single Jacobs Ladder, taken from the bands album of the same name has received numerous BBC Scotland plays and the album a 4 star Scottish Express review. God is in the TV said about the album “These songs wrap themselves around you like a warm blanket and effortlessly soothe your soul.” www.filthytongues.com www.facebook.com/officialskids 22 OCTOBER Almost Blue Promotions presents ….. FRONT COUNTRY: At The Blue Lamp, Aberdeen. Doors 7.30pm. £8.00+bf / £10 on the door. An acoustic band born in the land of tech innovation, Front Country was never going to be accepted as an authentic American roots band out of the gate. Cutting their teeth in progressive bluegrass jams in San Francisco’s Mission District and rehearsing in the East Bay, they learned to play roots music their own way, with the tools they had on hand. A mandolinist with a degree in composition and classical guitar. "Now in our 4th Year, Almost Blue Promotions continue to bring the best of independent Americana and Roots music to Aberdeen. NATHAN BELL: At The Blue Lamp, Aberdeen. Doors 7.30pm. £8.00+bf / £10 on the door. Nathan Bell has lived life. At 56, the wizened songwriter’s weary voice bleeds experience. He’s seen both sides of the coin—traveled the nomadic, bohemian path of the hard-luck
troubadour, and found comfort and meaning in the stability of a family, a home and a near twodecade corporate gig. And now, with a guitar back in his hands where it should be, he’s ready to tell the tale. But it’s not just his own story he’s after. It’s a story of America, of the working classes—both blue and white collar. Bell is a songwriter’s songwriter, a man who has shared bills with legends like Townes Van Zandt, Emmylou Harris, Taj Mahal and Norman Blake. "Now in our 4th Year, Almost Blue Promotions continue to bring the best of independent Americana and Roots music to Aberdeen.
