Travelling a distance to play or watch a gig? Get latest roads and traffic updates @ http://trafficscotland.org/ https://twitter.com/trafficscotland The Edinburgh Quartet: At Queen's Hall, Edinburgh. 3pm. The Edinburgh Quartet continue their tour of Scotland in March, with concerts in Edinburgh, Glasgow and Fraserburgh. After a successful visit to Shetland in November 2017, where the Quartet performed at the Mareel Auditorium in Lerwick, the Quartet head East to the town of Fraserburgh where they will work with local schools and perform at the Dalrymple Hall & Arts Centre, in addition to other outreach projects. Three concerts coming up in March will feature a programme that alludes to the East through Haydn’s “Sunrise” quartet, nicknamed after the glorious rising theme that begins the quartet, as well as by featuring works by two of Eastern Europe’s most eminent composers. As the final string quartets of Haydn, Bartók and Dvorák, this programme celebrates three masters of the genre at the top of their game. The Edinburgh Quartet is one of Britain’s best-known chamber ensembles. It gives concerts throughout the UK, across Europe, the Far and Middle East, North and South America. www.edinburghquartet.com 19 MARCH KATHRYN ROBERTS and SEAN LAKEMAN: At The Traverse Theatre, Edinburgh. Show 8pm Tickets £11 on 0131 228 1404. Kathryn Roberts and Sean Lakeman; the Dartmoor-based husband and wife have twice won the coveted Best Duo title at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards (2016 and 2013), consistently delivering assured, distinctive performances whether live or recorded. Over two decades of performance they have never been trapped in a groove – always bold and innovative, mixing traditional song arrangements with (increasingly) their self-penned material which reels from the bitter to the sweet, the wry to the sad, the political to the passive, across folk, rock, country and blues genres. A deft acoustic and electric guitarist and slick producer, Lakeman’s feted skills are matched by the exquisite voice and fluid piano and flute playing of Barnsley-born Roberts. Launching their new album 'Personae' on 9 March, this landmark fifth studio album is an eclectic emotional seesaw of material, melding 10 tracks of traditional ballads and their own versatile material, not surprisingly produced by Sean. www.traverse.co.uk www.kathrynrobertsandseanlakeman.com 22 MARCH MICHAEL JAMES AND THE BEDHEADS:

Comprised of trio of celebrated Nova Scotian musicians Carleton Stone, Dylan Guthro and Breagh MacKinnon, Port Cities were drawn together through songwriting as independent artists, with every intention of crafting new material, and then going their separate ways. Wide Days 2018 Showcase Line-Up STRATA :: Zoe Graham :: Edwin Organ :: Crystal :: Lucia :: Rascalton :: Wuh Oh

Wide Days Showcases - Friday 20 April - Venues :: Teviot Row House, 13 Bristo Place, EH8 9AJ + La Belle Angele, 11 Hastie's Close, Edinburgh EH1 1HJ + The Mash House, 37 Guthrie St, Edinburgh EH1 1JQ

Wide Days 2018 is to showcase a diverse snapshot of Scotland’s most exciting emerging talent as part of the award-winning convention which takes place in Edinburgh on 20-21 April. Seven acts selected from a range of different genres including electronic, jazz, pop and indie rock will perform across three Edinburgh venues on the first evening with a limited number of free tickets available to the public. Past Wide Days conventions have provided an early career springboard for artists including Honeyblood, Be Charlotte, Catholic Action, Fatherson, Scottish Album of the Year Award winner Kathryn Joseph and the Mercurynominated C Duncan. And in 2016, Wide Days was the first UK showcase event to feature a majority of acts fronted by women. This year’s acts - Graham Costello’s STRATA, Zoe Graham, Edwin Organ, Crystal, Lucia, Rascalton and Wuh Oh – were selected from over 200 applications received via the Wide Days website and digital service Gigmit. “Wide Days has established a reputation for presenting exciting new artists from Scotland, with many going on to be booked for international showcase events including Eurosonic, Reeperbahn Festival, SXSW, The Great Escape and Folk Alliance,” says the event’s founder, Olaf Furniss. “And thanks to the continued support of the National Lottery through Creative Scotland’s Open Project Fund, PRS Foundation and Eventbrite, as well as new partners DIY with Jägermeister, we are able to offer additional mentoring to all the participants.” The line-up was chosen in consultation with a network of A&R scouts, broadcasters, promoters, journalists and festival organisers. Participating acts are provided with a package of benefits including free tickets for the conference. “Getting Scottish talent onto the industry’s radar at home and abroad is central to what Creative Scotland is about, as is developing skills and knowledge within the Scottish music sector,” says Alan Morrison, Creative Scotland’s head of music. “By hosting illuminating panels by day and electrifying showcases by night, Wide Days achieves both aims brilliantly, and it’s great to be supporting

this event through our Open Project Fund.” In addition to the some 250 music-industry convention delegates, last year’s showcases saw 1000 registrations for free tickets from members of the public. The showcases begin in the Debating Hall of Teviot Row House, the world’s oldest student union building which is rebranded as the Gilded Balloon during the Fringe. They continue at La Belle Angele in the heart of Edinburgh’s Old Town and finish at The Mash House next door. In addition to the showcases, the Wide Days conference programme includes seminars focusing on new music label models, monetising streaming, improving disabled access to venues and lessons to be learned from the metal scene. The following day is based around relaxed networking opportunities for industry delegates, including a coach tour of Edinburgh guided by Furniss and a whisky tasting.
