Email them to Carol carol.musicnewsscotland@gmail.com 11 MAY BROKEN WINDOWS – featuring LIZ JONES (album launch): At Voodoo Rooms, Edinburgh. Liz Jones is an Edinburgh based singer songwriter, and Broken Windows (Songs by Liz Jones) is her debut album (out 12 May (self released as physical CD and digital through the usual outlets). Her band - also called Broken Windows - is John Bruce (guitarist and legendary Blues‘n’Trouble founder), Rod Kennard (highly respected bass player and current Blues‘n’Trouble member), percussionist Suzy Cargill and Marc Marnie (renowned music photographer and drummer). The guest musicians on the album include one of Scotland’s top saxophone players in John Burgess, keyboard player Ali Petrie (Nell Bryden, Safehouse) and fiddle player Andrew Hennessey. As expected with that lineup the album sits happily in blues/rock/jazz territory with songs about love, life and making music. It’s safe to say that Liz Jones will be a new voice to most people but she has spent the last 10 years honing her talent, writing songs and singing in the various sessions round Edinburgh and occasionally fronting Shameless with singer Mike Breen. The band was formed organically as some of Edinburgh’s best rock and blues talent started to notice the initially reluctant performer, recognized her talent and

encouraged her to make the leap into the recording studio with her own band and songs. Liz says: “I write mostly about fairly gritty, real life experiences and people, which I guess come from my pretty dry, pessimistic and un-spiritual view of life! The blues, rock and jazz feel of this album is the combined natural styles of the individual band members who have interpreted my miserable subjects with a little humour and energy. I've been very lucky.” The CD was produced by Jennifer Clark (producer, arranger, composer and bass player who has also recently worked with Gary Kemp and Horse). www.facebook.com/brokenwindows.music

page 8: edinburgh + mid - east - west lothian Singer Of The Year and Best Original Track Of The Year for his song, "If Wishes Were Horses", at The BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards in London. To simply call KRIS DREVER ‘a folksinger’ would be like saying that LAU, the acclaimed band in which he also sings and plays, is ‘a Scottish folk trio’. Both true descriptions but reductive ones that only hint at the progressive joys contained in the music of each. If Wishes Were Horses is a collection of semi-biographical songs covering the universal, and not so universal, themes of education, politics, sex, love, ennui, selfemployment, social migration and Shetland. Drever’s recent outpouring of songs stems from a move back to the Northern Isles, Shetland this time rather than his native Orkney and the discovery of new lyrical voices to describe his life, times and wild new surroundings. Drever’s voice and guitar now form a part of the backbone of today’s contemporary roots and folk scene. Hugely admired as a solo artist, collaborator, and member of folk superstars Lau, he is a phenomenal and prolific artist. www.fallenangelsclub.com ADAM BULLEY & CHAS MACKENZIE as special guests of ADAM HOLMES AND THE EMBERS: At Traverse Theatre, 10 Cambridge St. Edinburgh. The songs on To Gentlemen are a snapshot of the album yet to come; an album that is in turns disarmingly spare and deeply danceable. All the songs wade through the ever-rich and roiling waters of loving, leaving and finding new life again. www.hercrookedheart.com

Orkney Folk Festival Orkney 25-28 May

One of Scotland’s longest-running folk festivals, celebrating its 35th outing in 2017, the Orkney Folk Festival is one of the most prolific events in the Scottish and UK folk calendars, and one of the highlights of Orkney’s diary of community events. An entirely voluntary run event, the festival annually attracts artists from all corners of the folk world - from leading international names to up and coming fresh faces - to Stromness, in Orkney’s West Mainland, for four days of concerts, ceilidhs, clubs, sessions, talks and craic. Artists and audiences are welcomed by and into Orkney’s own thriving folk scene, with Orcadian artists providing around two thirds of the festival programme. Line-up announced across December-March, with tickets on sale in April, around six weeks ahead of the event. This is relatively close to the festival itself, as the festival consists of around 35 individually programmed and ticketed events, rather than offering all-in-one day or weekend tickets. Artists visiting the festival perform on several occasions, though, offering a number of chances to catch them over the weekend.
