'Their pedigree is unquestionable - their performance is unmissable'

These two performers have designed a show full of songs and anecdotes which combines their individual narratives with many joint and parallel activities. It’s an engaging performance from a pair of the UK’s most respected, longerserving songwriter-performers. They first met in 1969 at a recording for a BBC Radio 2 programme. It was either ‘Country meets Folk’’ or Folk on 2’ and was recorded,, as live in front of an audience in the Playhouse Theatre on The Embankment, by Charing Cross.

successful as an entertaining evening. They perform together – some of Rab’s songs, some of Allan’s – and they play, and sing, on each other’s songs. What makes the show special is that Allan and Rab came through the same rites of passage; from the sixties folk music scene in UK, especially London and then to the American scene. Allan lived in New York and performed all of the legendary clubs on the east coast on America, especially those in Greenwich Village, New York. He recorded in Nashville and Los Angeles. Rab took a similar route, recording in Nashville. The gig consists of many anecdotes of life on the road – where they crossed tracks. Stories of the London scene, the Nashville scene (Allan and Rab only realised recently that they had stayed in the same motel in Nashville) and the crazy and interesting characters they met along the way (some of whom they wrote songs for) make up a musically rich, engagingly anecdotal, two-hour show.

In the intervening years their paths have crossed on many occasions and circumstances. In conversation one day they realised how parallel their careers in music These two top quality songwriters / singers / had been and thought about making a show of musicians have been at the top of their game it. for many years now and as a partnership Allan and Rab have performed this format on they've taken the level up a notch'. a number of nights across the UK and www.allantaylor.com Denmark and it has proved to be very www.rabnoakes.com successful. The Poozies first burst onto the folk scene in 1991, when folk music wore elaborately patterned woolly jumpers and was only seen in dingy back rooms and very late at night on BBC2 – yet from the word go they were breaking out and happily exploring the musical universe. The folk scene was then, as now, very maledominated and so it was a conscious decision back then to be an ‘all-female’ band. The name came from a den of iniquity frequented by Robert Burns, called Poozie Nancy’s, and there is some debate amongst the four founder members as to whether the now-obvious meaning of ‘Poozie’ was realised back then… but the

MUSIC NEWS Scotland GIGguide page 16: fife + central + perthshire + tayside feeling now is that it’s pretty rock and roll!! As with all bands that have been on the road for so long there have been various line-up changes, and although it’s probably fair to say a male may feel it’s slightly strange to be in a band with this name, there has also always been a natural choice of who will join the band and these people have also just so happened to be female. Throughout the years The Poozies have toured worldwide and attracted recognition and appreciation for their eclectic choice of material, unusual and exciting arrangements, and heart-tugging vocal harmonies. Her selfpenned play, Christine Bovill’s Piaf, greatly received by the critics, gained 5-star ratings from the Scotsman and The Belfast Telegraph. She has toured the show internationally, including South Korea, accompanied by a symphony orchestra. Last year she launched her new show, Christine Bovill’s Paris at the Edinburgh Fringe.
