There was a fluidity to their collaboration, with loose boundaries that gave the assembled musicians a wide canvas. Between the isolation of being the only black family around, the family’s poverty, and a turbulent home life, Yola needed refuge, which she found in her mother’s record collection; among the albums she clung to was Aretha Franklin’s Young, Gifted & Black. Yola was also a guest on Jools’s Annual Hootenanny on Hogmanay this year. Lady Nade is a rootsy-Songstress fusing modern soul, roots, blues and pop-folk. Scottish troubadour Dean Owens has been awarded an “Honorable Mention” by the International Songwriting Competition, for Love Prevails (co-written with Will Kimbrough). The Nashville based competition is open to songwriters worldwide, across a range of genres, with a panel of industry judges including Tom Waits, Adam Lambert and Rodney Crowell. After a string of American dates he now returns to Scotland to play some solo shows and return to Fringe by the Sea Festival in North Berwick with his Celtabilly Allstars band (which sold out in 2018). mns GIGfocus :: The legendary Zal Cleminson is back with his new band /sin’dogs/ 2019 has continued where 2018 finished – with fantastic responses and reviews for both their debut album, ‘Vol.1’ - “an outstanding album” (PowerPlay) and in response to their live power – “brutally heavy” (Giants of Rock Review) Widely respected for his work with The Sensational Alex Harvey Band and cited by many respected guitarists as an influence, Zal provided his incendiary guitar and writing throughout the bands original incarnation, including the seminal albums NEXT, FRAMED and THE IMPOSSIBLE DREAM. With SAHB reassembling for ‘live’ work during the early Noughties, including bills with Def Leppard and Cheap Trick, Zal then chose to retire from music. That was, until 2017, fired anew with the excitement of new songs, he set about a fresh assault in music once again. So was born - /sin’dogs/ .
