Scandinavian music in the festive setting of candlelit churches and cathedrals across the country. The programme begins with Grieg’s fivemovement Holberg Suite interspersed with new music from today’s Scandinavia. This includes a new commission from Christian Winther Christensen, an avant garde Danish composer who draws inspiration from a wide range of cultural and musical influences, resulting in a style which is entirely his own. There are also short interludes from The Fiddlers by leading Finnish composer Einojuhani Rautavaara. Rautavaara is known for his mystical soundworlds and eclectic style and, like Sibelius, who also features in the programme, writes music which is evocative of his home country. The short Christensen and Rautavaara interludes challenge audiences to listen to Grieg’s popular string work afresh. The Nordic journey continues in Finland with the noble melodies of Sibelius’ stirring Andante festivo, a single movement work originally scored for string quartet which layers simple musical lines to great effect. The programme finishes in Norway with the striking folk colours and drama of Grieg’s String Quartet No. 1, in a brand new arrangement for string orchestra by the Ensemble’s Artistic Director Jonathan Morton. page 13: glasgow area / dundee / fife / perth / stirling / falkirk Christmas concert offering. This year – in keeping with the 2013/14 season’s theme of place and musical identity – the programme centres on winter Nordic landscapes. Audiences are invited to take a trip to the frozen north and explore sparkling, spirited Scandinavian music in the festive setting of candlelit churches and cathedrals across the country. The programme begins with Grieg’s five-movement Holberg Suite interspersed with new music from today’s Scandinavia. Wellington Church, University Avenue, Hilhead, Glasgow, Time 7.30pm. Tickets £13, Students £5, Under 16s free when accompanied by a full paying adult. 8 DECEMBER SCOTTISH ENSEMBLE: NORDIC NIGHTS: Concerts by Candlelight, The Scottish Ensemble’s Christmas Concerts by Candlelight take a fresh approach to the traditional Christmas concert offering. 1, in a

Strathpeffer Pavilion Band Showcase: A fantastic bill that includes: THREE BLIND WOLVES, AMWWF (Anderson McGinty 7 DECEMBER Webster Ward Fisher), DONALD MACDONALD AND THE ISLANDS SCOTTISH ENSEMBLE: NORDIC and DR. WOOK. KRIS REID. NIGHTS: Concerts by Candlelight,

The Scottish Ensemble’s Christmas Concerts by Candlelight take a fresh approach to the traditional Christmas concert offering. The short Christensen and Rautavaara interludes challenge audiences to listen to Grieg’s popular string work

afresh. St Andrew's Cathedral Inverness, 15 Ardross Street, Inverness Time 8pm, Tickets £15, Students £5, Under 16s free when accompanied by a full paying adult. The Piano 2013 Glasgow November 16 - December 1 Ultimately, the piano, like every instrument is merely a tool, a means to an end. But no other instrument can compare with the piano for the power it gives the individual player to create a whole many-voiced world of colours, lines, arguments, textures – and emotions. Few other instruments have proven themselves as multifaceted and versatile as this astounding creation of wood, metal, wire, felt and lacquer. That is why in November, we celebrate The Piano.
