SCOTLAND SINGS LAUNCHES FOR ST ANDREW'S DAY WEEKEND CELEBRATIONS 29 Nov-1 Dec : www.scotlandsings.co.uk

Hands Up for Trad has launched their latest Scotland Sings weekend which will take place in celebration of St Andrew’s Day, from the 29 November until 1 December, and it is calling out for singers, karaoke fans and shower rock stars to sign up for this year’s festivities. It is one of many events that are part of the Event Scotland, Scotland’s Winter Festival.

Singer Melanie Masson and the Razzmatazz children's choir belted out Auld Lang Syne at Robert Burns Cottage to help launch Scotland Sings 2013 Scotland Sings is the first ever initiative designed to encourage people to get out there and have a sing-a-long and the three-day festival will see a series of singing events spanning the width and breadth of Scotland, in locations including Edinburgh, Perth, Glasgow, Cumbernauld and Balerno. People of all ages, backgrounds and vocal talent are being encouraged to get involved, with the aim of getting the whole of Scotland singing and having a great time in the process whether that is as part of a community group, by yourself or in a band. Says Melanie Masson: “I’m delighted to be here at the Burns Museum to launch Scotland Sings with such a talented group of youngsters. Burns was such a wonderful songwriter and poet which is inspiring in itself. When people think of singing, they usually think of being on a big stage in front of lots of people. That’s something I love but it’s not for everyone and not the only way you can be involved in singing. I’ve seen first-hand how singing has helped young people gain confidence and make friends, which is why initiatives like Scotland Sings are so important. I'm proud to be Scottish and proud to be part of Scotland Sings.” Adds Simon Thoumire, Creative Director of Hands Up for Trad: “We hope today’s launch inspires people from all over the country to sign up for Scotland Sings. You don’t need to sound like SuBo to take part – just love to sing and have some fun. The last Scotland Sings Weekend saw over 60 events and 3000 people take part and we hope to beat that this year and what could be more inspiring than doing it over our national holiday weekend”. To find out more about Scotland Sings events taking place in your area visit: www.scotlandsings.co.uk and to take part email: scotlandsings@handsupfortrad.co.uk Further information on the Winter Festivals programme @

Rautavaara. Rautavaara is known for his mystical soundworlds and eclectic style and, like Sibelius, who also features in the programme, writes music which is evocative of his home country. The short Christensen and Rautavaara interludes challenge audiences to listen to Grieg’s popular string work afresh. The Nordic journey continues in Finland with the noble melodies of Sibelius’ stirring Andante festivo, a single movement work originally scored for string quartet which layers simple musical lines to great effect. The programme finishes in Norway with the striking folk colours and drama of Grieg’s String Quartet No. 1, in a brand new arrangement for string orchestra by the Ensemble’s Artistic Director Jonathan Morton. TOP AMERICANS HIT GLASGOW FOR CHARITY GIG: The Light of Day Scotland charity concert features nine acts, including four from the USA. All are performing for free. On the bill are Jesse Malin, Guy Davis, Joe D’Urso and Rob Dye – all from the New York and New Jersey areas – along with home-based talent such as Maeve O’Boyle, Jim Dead, Jack Law, Adam Smith and Billy Crawford. Staged to raise funds for research into neurological diseases, including Parkinson’s and MS, all money raised from the gig goes direct to charities, Revive MS and Funding Neuro. Jesse Malin – who has duetted with Bruce Springsteen live and on record – has a great reputation as a live artiste and has two sell-out gigs in Glasgow under his belt. Guy Davis, whose fans include Jackson Brown, is a musician, composer, actor, director, and writer and a bluesman through and through with the blues permeating every corner of his creativity. Joe D’Urso, on the Board of Directors for The Light of Day Foundation internationally, is widely praised for making music with passion and for a purpose to help others. His music is rootsy, introspective and rocking. Rob Dye’s music incorporates elements of rock, old school country, Staxinfluenced R&B, gospel and more

while remaining true to the essence of each style. He logs over 150 shows a year, whether in a duo or with a band playing covers along the Jersey Shore or touring the country and overseas for the Light Of Day Foundation. The charity takes its name “Light Of Day” from the title of a Springsteen song and a film starring Parkinson’s sufferer, Michael J Fox. The charity was established in 2000 to raise money for the disease after Bob Benjamin, a well-known music figure in the New York area was diagnosed with Parkinson’s. At Oran Mor, Byers Rd, Glasgow. The Scottish Ensemble’s Christmas Concerts by Candlelight take a fresh approach to the traditional Christmas concert offering. This year – in keeping with the 2013/14 season’s theme of place and musical identity – the programme centres on winter Nordic landscapes. Audiences are invited to take a trip to the frozen north and explore sparkling, spirited Scandinavian music in the festive setting of candlelit churches and cathedrals across the country. The programme begins with Grieg’s fivemovement Holberg Suite interspersed with new music from today’s Scandinavia. This includes a new commission from Christian Winther Christensen, an avant garde Danish composer who draws inspiration from a wide range of cultural and musical influences, resulting in a style which is entirely his own. There are also short interludes from The Fiddlers by leading Finnish composer Einojuhani Rautavaara. Wellington Church, University Avenue, Hilhead, Glasgow, Time 7.30pm.

The programme begins with Grieg’s five-movement Holberg Suite interspersed with new music from today’s Scandinavia. Rautavaara is known for his mystical soundworlds and eclectic style and, like Sibelius, who also features in

the programme, writes music which is evocative of his home country. Caird Hall, City Square, Dundee, Time 7.30pm. Tickets £12, Students £5, Under 16s free when accompanied by a full paying adult. 29 NOVEMBER ST BOSWELLS LIVE! : Bread & Jam Open Mic. Something new for St Boswells Live! We have had continued calls for jam sessions and open mics, but the big hall can be a bit scary, especially when there are lots of people watching and even milling about at the end. With this in mind, and with the help of St Boswells Cricket Club, we are introducing Bread & Jam, a terrible pun on a simple concept. This is how it works: From 8pm, turn up at the Cricket Club (just round the back of the Buccleuch Arms Hotel) with your instrument, voice or just a willingness to listen and enjoy the music. Feel free to bring an amplifier if you need one, but the room is small enough to be acoustic. If you feel an urge, and there is no one else doing it, play your instrument, sing your song, tell your story or whatever you want to do. We encourage people to join in, but if you want to do it alone then just ask. In the meantime, get drinks from the Cricket Club bar, listen to other people, and enjoy the soup and bread we’ve laid on (that’s where the “bread” bit comes from). That’s it. Donations to pay for the food, and keep St Boswells Live! running are welcome, but there’s no obligation. Oh, and if you’re planning on coming then drop us a note, just so we get an idea of numbers for food. in St Boswells Cricket Club from 8pm. www.stboswellslive.com RESTON CONCERT BAND: Village Hall, Cockburnspath. NOVEMBER Aberfeldy Festival Aberfeldy November 1-3

as "the friendliest weekender ever" by all of the patrons that attended this incredible 3 day and 3 night event set in an incredible venue. Don't be misled by the name The Scottish Soulful Weekender, yes we play a lot of soul music in some of the rooms but we also cater for soulful and jackin' house music lovers in the Pressure Point and nu disko, techy vibes and edits in the Blue Room with everything else in between.

Now in its sixth year the House Folk Scottish Music Festival brings you two nights of Scottish music performed by top artists in a highly unusual and intimate venue. The concerts take place every year in autumn in the village of Kinlochard situated in the Heart of the Trossachs. The concerts offer an expo of bagpipe, accordion, strings, fiddle, vocals and flute music fusing traditional and contemporary Scottish styles that have influenced the music scene around the globe. Each night differs from the other but both include a blend of great music for everyone with a mix of folk and traditional styles!

Aberfeldy Festival is back and this year’s line-up is going to be bigger and better than ever!
