Scotland’s first ever Gaelic Gospel choir was formed to take on the challenge of entering the BBC Songs of Praise Gospel Choir of the Year competition. A new BBC ALBA programme follows the choir’s formation, starting with the selection process narrowing down the 128 applicants from all over Scotland, to the first rehearsal in Inverness. The choir must record two songs as their entry into the BBC competition, with only one month to complete all their training and rehearsals. Gaelic singer Mary Ann Kennedy puts the choir through their paces and motivates them to embrace the new style of singing. In another break from tradition, Coca Tenorio, a Salsa singer and songwriter, is brought in to help the choir to relax and move naturally on stage. www.bbcalba.co.uk

If anyone is truly deserving of the title of 'artist', it's the mercurial talent that is Joseph Arthur. Smart, soulful and intricate in ways that most songwriters can only dream of, Joseph’s songs are bursting with ideas emotionally raw and unyieldingly inventive. CAM PENNER & JON WOOD: At The Blue Lamp, Aberdeen. Doors 7.30pm. Tickets £10 / £8 adv. We are very happy to announce the return of the brilliant CAM PENNER & JON WOOD to Aberdeen ! Get your tickets early, this was a very busy night the last time they played! The music he plays - and energy generated - has won him many friends, fans and admirers. The mesmerising live show is bigger - and brighter than before, spontaneously grand and fragile at the same time. Percussive elements and layered guitar techniques have added rich texture. Cam hails from a Mennonite community in Southern Manitoba, where his parents, town rebels, ran an illegal roadhouse and his grandfather, a bootlegger, was a much-loved character in the rural community. Growing up against that background, he found an appreciation for common people's stories. Since stepping out aged 18, he has experienced more raw humanity than most would encounter in a lifetime. He spent thirteen years dedicated to helping the homeless and destitute in Chicago’s soup kitchens and shelters and when each shift was over, would spend endless hours writing and playing his guitar while exorcising his emotions through music. www.AlmostBluePromotions.com 16 DECEMBER SKERRYVORE: At The Lemon Tree, Aberdeen. Ullapool Guitar Festival Ullapool 7-9 October So why is the UGF so special? Perhaps it’s the mix of music old and new, of electric and acoustic, of steel and nylon, of seasoned performers and those, like the students from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, just starting out on their careers. Perhaps it’s the location on Loch Broom and the drive up through some of Scotland’s most spectacular scenery. Perhaps it’s the informal air of the whole weekend: there’s no “us and them”, no VIP area. Everyone mingles, and you’re likely to find yourself sitting beside a guitar legend in the Festival Club – or even jamming with them on one of the trade stands.
