Tommy Smith decided that the time was right to record a tribute to one of his biggest inspirations, John Coltrane. Smith called the former Young Scottish Jazz Musician of the Year, pianist Peter Johnstone, the SNJO’s bassist Calum Gourlay and Dutch drummer Sebastiaan de Krom to record at Castlesound Studios in Pencaitland. By the end of the session they had recorded the tracks that comprise Smith’s latest album, Embodying the Light, which features favourite Coltrane compositions such as Naima and Resolution alongside new pieces Smith wrote in dedication to his hero. Austin-based Slaid Cleaves has the honour of being the first act to be named for 2017’s Glasgow Americana Festival. The opening night concert is a tribute to ‘The Late Great Townes Van Zandt’ which will feature Rachel Sermanni, Jefferson Hamer, Davie Scott, Roseanne Reid, Jonas and Jane, plus a special guest.
