TOMMY SMITH QUARTET: At Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club, London. Tommy Smith decided that ------------------------------------------------ the time was right to record a tribute to one of his biggest inspirations, John Coltrane. Smith called the former Young Scottish Jazz Musician of the Year, pianist Peter Johnstone, the SNJO’s bassist Calum Gourlay and Dutch drummer Sebastiaan de Krom to record at Castlesound Studios in Pencaitland. By the end of the session they had recorded the tracks that comprise Smith’s latest album, Embodying the Light, which features favourite Coltrane compositions such as Naima and Resolution alongside new pieces Smith wrote in dedication to his hero. The upcoming tour will see the group playing without amplification, a practice that Smith has long favoured. www.tommysmith.co.uk

JONNIE COMMON with support THE NARCISSIST COOKBOOK & THE NICKAJACK MEN: At The Tolbooth, Stirling. “Gorgeous machine pop bard” Jonnie Common returns to corrupt another file with crooked hooks and upturned phrases. Returning to the Tolbooth touring latest single ‘Restless‘, Jonnie will be back with resident drumming sensation Peter Kelly (The Kills / Marnie [Ladytron]) ahead of next year’s new album. Those who caught Jonnie’s perfomance here back in 2015, or perhaps as part of the Stirling DIY Press Collective‘s secret show at Made In Stirling, will be familiar with his brand of dreamy electronic glitch-pop. In support is The Narcissist Cookbook - a singer songwriter like no other who incorporates elements of spoken word, mind-bending use of a loop machine, lyrics that speak to the core of your existence as a human being, and a delivery that keeps you hanging on every word. Plus The Nickajack Men - the four piece alt-country/indie from Denny, full of sweet harmonies, dirty guitars and melancholic Americana vibes. www.facebook.com/strangebehavioursstirling
