Belladrum Announce New Independent Label and Launch 'Tamzene' identity. Her tender, soulful debut offering, ‘Lullaby’, was written and recorded with McAlinden and mixed by Grammy Award winner David Donaldson.

'Lullaby' is the debut track from Tamzene, the first artist to sign to Belladrum Records a unique new independent label spun out of the multi-award winning Belladrum Tartan Heart Festival. Tamzene is a young 19 year old singersongwriter from the coastal town of Cromarty in the Scottish Highlands; a highly talented multi-instrumentalist, she started learning piano and violin when she was eight years old, encouraged by her saxophonist stepfather and salsa teaching mother. Aged 14 she further extended her musical dexterity by quickly picking up guitar and embarked on writing her own material. Her early influences came from hearing the Roberta Flack, Aretha Franklin and Eva Cassidy songs played around the home- and quickly progressed to immersing herself in the sound of artists including Nina Simone, Birdy and Alicia Keys.

Belladrum Records Director Joe Gibbs said: “As one of the most exciting new artists we've seen in some time, we're thrilled that Tamzene will be the first act to sign with Belladrum Records. The Highlands has always had a deep natural reservoir of musical talent and we're delighted that these artists have the option of partnering with a strong regionally based label infrastructure- a platform which is also directly associated with one of Scotland’s biggest and best music festivals. With the creation of this new label, the diversity of the music industry in the Highlands and Islands continues to grow and our ambition is to complement the incredible range of creative businesses already based across this fantastic region." 'Lullaby', the debut track from Tamzene is now available to download and stream on Spotify, Apple Music, iTunes and most other services. Belladrum Tartan Heart Festival takes place in the beautiful Highland surroundings of Belladrum Estate, near Beauly in Inverness-shire. The independent festival has built a reputation for its eclectic line-ups, offbeat non-musical entertainments and allages approach. The festival won a VisitScotland Thistle Award in 2009 and is a past winner of the Grassroots Festival Award at the UK Festival Awards, the festival industry’s ‘Oscars’. Since its first edition, the festival has welcomed some of the biggest artists in the global music industry as well as developing a reputation as a key platform for showcasing the best emerging talent. Acts to have appeared at the festival include Tom Jones, Manic Street Preachers, Frightened Rabbit, Two Door Cinema Club, Travis, Twin Atlantic, Biffy Clyro and Kaiser Chiefs. This year's festival will take place across the 3rd, 4th and 5th of August.

A scholarship took Tamzene to the world famous Gordonstoun School where teachers played a critical role in nurturing her interest in music. The need to raise money for a school project to build water tanks in Thailand started her busking career on the streets of the Highland capital, Inverness. Her mother optimistically gave her a guitar case for the coins and she was adopted by a friendly Big Issue seller who kept a protective eye on her.

Having spent the last year building her live profile across a host of venues and festivals, she is currently a full time student at Leeds College of Music. After a long period writing songs on her own, she has recently started collaborating with one of Scotland’s leading songwriters and producers, Joe McAlinden, at his studio in rural Argyll- a creative relationship which is seeing the young artist develop a bolder, more coherent musical

Scottish National Jazz Orchestra presents

Sketches of Spain & Porgy and Bess Directed by Tommy Smith and featuring Laura Jurd + Tom MacNiven Celebrate International Jazz Day with the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra as they perform 'Sketches of Spain and Porgy and Bess' : two historic jazz albums by Gil Evans and Miles Davis. Playing the role of Miles Davis will be guest soloists Laura Jurd, one of the UK’s rising jazz stars, and the SNJO’s very own Tom MacNiven. Laura Jurd is an award-winning trumpeter who has taken UK jazz by storm with her band Dinosaur, and her outstanding work with the Ligeti Quartet. She’s also written commissioned music for BBC Concert Orchestra, the Northern Sinfonia and BBC Radio 3. In 2015, Laura received the Parliamentary Jazz Award for ‘Instrumentalist of the Year’ and she recently joined the Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music as a teacher of composition. Tom MacNiven is a familiar face within the ranks of the SNJO as a trumpet soloist extraordinaire. He has been a first call collaborator for countless jazz projects for over two decades and he’s inspired successive generations of jazz trumpeters in live performances and in the classrooms of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. As a session musician he has appeared on countless albums and TV theme tunes and performed at most of the major Festivals in the UK including Glastonbury, Reading and T in the Park. The two works in this programme couldn’t be more contrasting, more iconic, and more perennially popular as defining jazz of the 20thCentury. Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess (1959) was radically re-written by Gil Evans in arrangements imprinted and voiced by the inimitable Miles Davis on trumpet. They quickly followed that artistic success with Sketches of Spain, an album in which Evans turned Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez on its harmonic head, and Davis’s trumpet playing transformed Spanish folk

melody into urbane jazz.

Summertime, and Rodrigo’s famous Concierto.

This promises to be a landmark concert series for an orchestra that has become accustomed to making history of its own, not least in previous performances of these works with Gerard Presencer, and later with Gunther Schuller in a sell out concert at the Usher Hall. The SNJO have also featured the seminal Evans/Davis work Miles Ahead, in concert series with Ingrid Jensen late 1990s, and more recently with Paolo Fresu in 2013. Similarly, SNJO have twice visited Miles Davis’ Birth of the Cool, in both cases to widespread critical acclaim.

The work of Miles Davis and Gil Evans deserves a large stage and this concert series takes full advantage of the acoustic brilliance of three fine venues, culminating in a headline concert for the International Jazz Day event at Glasgow Royal Concert Hall. We invite everyone to join the rightly acclaimed SNJO, Laura Jurd and Tom MacNiven to celebrate composers and musicians who were consistently ahead of their time, but never beyond the reach of common understanding.

There can be few introductions to fabled jazz music that still makes such a lasting impact as these impressionist paintings in melodic, modern music. Porgy and Bess and Sketches of Spain marked career highs for Davis and Evans, and they’ve retained their capacity to hook many a young listener who has learned to treasure recordings like It Ain’t Necessarily So,

JAMES LINDSAY :: album :: 'Strand' release date - 2 June @ www.jameslindsaymusic.com Glasgow based instrumentalist James Lindsay steps out as a composer in his own right with the release of debut solo album ‘Strand’ in June. Well respected as a genrehopping session musician, arranger, tutor and member of multi award-winning folk group Breabach this will be the first time he has presented new material since winning the Martyn Bennett prize for composition in 2014.

and distinctly Scottish instrumental work that draws upon James’ diverse range of influences and experiences. It places melodic ideas inspired by the folk tradition within unusual harmonic and rhythmic settings, playfully exploring the boundaries between roots music and contemporary jazz. Improvisations weave in and out of intricately composed passages whilst all the while supported by a grooving rhythm section.

The music is cohesively brought together by Strand is a fully self-penned, darkly atmospheric some of the top cross-genre musicians working

in Scotland today (members of Treacherous Orchestra, Roddie Hart & The Lonesome Fire, Stu Brown’s Twisted Toons). The album was recorded In December 2016 at the newly opened GloWorm Studios in Glasgow with engineer Iain Hutchison (Transatlantic Sessions) and features James on double bass along with Hamish Napier (flute/ keys), Adam Sutherland (fiddle), Scott Mackay (drums), Ben Macdonald (guitar) and Tom Gibbs (keys). Mixing and mastering was completed in Brooklyn, New York by renowned jazz producer Michael Perez-Cisneros(Gilad Hekselman, Julian Shore). The album is inspired by the boundary pushing work of artists such as Bill Frisell, Aidan o’ Rourke, Sam Amidon, Ben Wendel & Martyn Bennett. It also draws thematic impetus from the on going struggles between man and nature that play out around the dramatic Scottish coastline. “James Lindsay provides a sensitive and grooving bass that leads the swell of melodies from beneath.” Kitty Macfarlane Pop up Folk GIGnotes .....

The album weaves its way through a rich tapestry of tunes and tales inspired by traditional life in North-East Scotland’s fishing and farming communities Listen/Watch:

The Poets & The Beats Guillotine

album cd / download Release Date: Out Now

Guillotine was launched on 10th oct at Summerhall with a massive 19piece line-up including string and brass sextets. This was the only way to do the album justice. Guillotine is the culmination of the band's 8 year weekly residency at Edinburgh's notorious Jazz Bar. This is definitely a huge step up in Mike Kearney's production and writing style. Enjoy! The Poets and the Beats from Musician / producer Paul Armour (ex Seminal Glasgow Surf Pop Band “The Cuban Heels") “The album is very much a beat combo sound. Punchy with grooves using classic retro instruments: Rhodes Wurlitzer & Hammond, vintage amps and guitars. The feel is a mix of styles, melodic & rhythmic. Lyrically quirky with themes of hope and renewal. A recent review from Rock Fm. Scotland described the sound as “Weller-ish” but more refined! It’s all in the ear of the beholder. Enjoy the beats…” Listen/Watch: https://soundcloud.com www.youtube.com Available from: www.birnamcdshop.com www.paularmour.co.uk https://twitter.com/paul497191 www.facebook.com/paul.armour.31

Born and brought up in Inverness, Liza has been involved in folk music for many years. Although classically trained in piano, her family background of a big Glasgow-Irish clan of musicians and singers on her father's side, and the Gaelic song tradition of her mother's Isle of Lewis heritage, inevitably meant a strong pull towards the folk scene. On her first solo album of original songs and tunes, Fine 'n' Rosy, Liza brings together some top players, including cousin, Rua Macmillan, winner of Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician Of the Year 2009, Alasdair Taylor of the Folk Award-winning band, The Elephant Sessions, and Robin Abbot of The Mystic Shoes. This intimate album comprises reflective ballads and uptempo songs with catchy choruses, complemented by rollicking trad-style tunes and dreamy instrumentals.

Throughout the album, Angela’s stunning vocal harmonies soar, a newly found and defining quality in her individual style. Although influences of country, soul and pop all join together in Down to the River, Angela’s island roots are never far beneath the surface. John Saich, former Capercaillie bass player and guitarist, and Wild Biscuit co-producer Mags Russell have created multi-layered arrangements on tracks such as Don’t Say Hi, Yesteryear and the title track Down to the River reminiscent of many of the classic singer-songwriter albums; on others such as Wax Doll and Closing Doors a contemporary acoustic approach puts the emotion up close and in the moment. Album - cd - Release Date: Out Now This CD is the culmination of a much earlier celebration, in music and song, of ‘The Wallace’ in 2005, by way of a commission from Alasdair Campbell who was then with The Tolbooth Music and Arts venue in Stirling. This was followed by another commission by Carolyn Paterson in 2014 to celebrate another icon of history of whom we know a good bit more than the former, Robert de Brus of Norman French stock, the 14th C warlord who became King, regaining Scotland’s place as an Independent nation. This orchestrated progression of music ranges from an arrangement of a classic traditional pibroch theme, in its most appropriate animated and rhythmic presentation, to specially composed and arranged pieces. Melodies are presented on a range of pipes in several different keys, overlaid and blended with percussion, clarsach, cello, soprano saxophone, violin, whistle and vocals. Orkney Folk Festival Orkney 25-28 May

One of Scotland’s longest-running folk festivals, celebrating its 35th outing in 2017, the Orkney Folk Festival is one of the most prolific events in the Scottish and UK folk calendars, and one of the highlights of Orkney’s diary of community events. An entirely voluntary run event, the festival annually attracts artists from all corners of the folk world - from leading international names to up and coming fresh faces - to Stromness, in Orkney’s West Mainland, for four days of concerts, ceilidhs, clubs, sessions, talks and craic. Artists and audiences are welcomed by and into Orkney’s own thriving folk scene, with Orcadian artists providing around two thirds of the festival programme. Line-up announced across December-March, with tickets on sale in April, around six weeks ahead of the event. This is relatively close to the festival itself, as the festival consists of around 35 individually programmed and ticketed events, rather than offering all-in-one day or weekend tickets. Artists visiting the festival perform on several occasions, though, offering a number of chances to catch them over the weekend.
