The full line up was carefully selected by a jury of industry professionals and XpoNorth looks forward to welcoming a wealth of musical talent from home and abroad. For selected acts, there is also the chance of appearing at Beauly-based Belladrum Tartan Heart Festival in August this year on a specially curated XpoNorth Seedlings stage. The annual Inverness-based XpoNorth conference is devoted to supporting creative individuals and businesses in the Highlands and Islands and beyond. fashion, writing, publishing and design. It is attended by leading creative industry insiders, who take part in workshops, panels and masterclass sessions over the course of both days. By night the festival changes pace as the influential music showcase takes music stars of tomorrow from the Highlands and Islands and beyond and places them on stages across Scotland’s most northerly city over two nights. Festival Director, Amanda Millen, said: “Showcasing the best emerging acts on the music scene has always been an integral part of the festival since its inception at the start of the century. "Today, XpoNorth is a wide-reaching conference and showcase which brings together a host of elements under one creative umbrella. The music showcasing is the jewel in its crown which gels people together at the end of two inspiring, full-on days of panels, keynotes and international industry-level networking. "There’s a lot of key creative industries influencers who attend XpoNorth and even if they don’t work in the music industry, they might be on the look out for music for a film or a new video game. Creative connections are forged every minute of the day during XpoNorth."

SCOTTISH MUSIC CENTRE ............ Member's Profile :: Composer JOHN McLEOD

CBE

"The Scottish Music Centre's task is to champion the wealth of talent that abounds in Scotland's musical community"

John McLeod CBE was born in Aberdeen, studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London, and has been resident in Edinburgh for over 40 years. His increasingly acclaimed music bears all the hallmarks of exuberant colour and precisely imagined fantasy that his earlier associations with Lennox Berkeley and Witold Lutoslawski would lead one to expect. For over 40 years, he has been at the centre of contemporary Scottish music and is still one of the UK’s busiest and most prolific composers. John has won important awards for his work including the prestigious Guinness Prize for British composers. In 1989 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Music and in 2005 and 2010 was nominated for a British Composer Award. Recently he was the recipient of the Gold Badge of the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors (BASCA) for services to British music. In June 2016 McLeod was created CBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours. McLeod’s brilliantly coloured orchestral and vocal music has been commissioned, performed and recorded in many countries by leading orchestras (several conducted by McLeod himself) including the Philharmonia Orchestra, the Hallé Orchestra, the RSNO, the SCO, the Orchestra of the Staatstheater, Saarbrücken, the Nashville Symphony (USA) and the Polish Radio and TV Symphony Orchestra of Krakow. The National Youth Orchestra of Scotland has given over 20

performances of his music over the years (including 3 major commissions) and the BBC SSO has performed and broadcast 15 of his orchestral works. Soloists such as Evelyn Glennie, Colin Currie, Benjamin Luxon, Raimund Gilvan, Jane Manning, Peter Donohoe, Murray McLachlan, Sam Haywood , Mark Tanner and Ian Watt have all performed his music and conductors including Sir Charles Groves, Sir Alexander Gibson, Neeme Jarvi, Janos Furst, Takuo Yuasa, Yasuo Shinozaki, Joseph Swensen, Donald Runnicles and a host of younger conductors have all included McLeod’s works in their programmes. McLeod’s music has also been featured at many international festivals including the BBC Proms, City of London Festival, Aldeburgh, Edinburgh, Canterbury, Perth, Aberdeen’s ‘Sound’ Festival and St Magnus (Orkney). Most of his works have also been heard on BBC Radio 3, Classic FM, BBC TV and Channel 4. His compositions cover most musical genres – orchestral (including concertos for piano, percussion, clarinet, guitar and 3 symphonic song-cycles), choral works, church music, songs, instrumental and chamber music as well as scores for film and TV In the past few years his output and performances have increased dramatically, culminating in 2014 when his music was heard at the St. Magnus and Aldeburgh Festivals as well as at the BBC Proms where he scored a big personal success with the London premiere of The Sun Dances played by the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra conducted by Donald Runnicles. Also in 2014 pianist Murray McLachlan commissioned and performed McLeod’s latest Piano Sonata No.5 and gave over 30 performances of it all over the UK and in France, Greece, Poland, Sweden, Australia and the Canary Islands.

In January 2015 the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, under Joseph Swensen, gave three performances of his latest orchestral work Out of the Silence and a few weeks later McLeod himself conducted the National Youth Orchestra of Scotland in two performances of his Piano Concerto with James Willshire as soloist. 2015 also saw the release, to critical acclaim, of Moments in Time – a major new CD of McLeod’s chamber music by the awardwinning Delphian label and played by the outstanding Red Note Ensemble. Recent commissions have included a new percussion work for Dame Evelyn Glennie’s 50th birthday, a song-cycle for Live Music Now and a new Viola Concerto for the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and Jane Atkins A complete catalogue of John McLeod’s music with details of timings and orchestrations, CDs and up to date biographical details and news, can be found at

The Lowest Pair make their UK debut with run of Scottish dates One of the most hotlytipped duos on the American roots music circuit, The Lowest Pair, will make their UK debut with a run of Scottish dates after being flown over the Atlantic as one of the main visiting acts for this year’s Shetland Folk Festival.

Innes praised their “vocal perfection,” and the hugelyinfluential Lonesome Highway (Ireland) called them “a musical marriage made in heaven.” Acoustic magazine’s Julian Piper said they were “incredibly atmospheric” and Folk Radio UK labelled it “music for sunshine and mint juleps.”

Kendl Winter, born in Arkansas, put three solo records out and performed in nationally-touring northwest string bands before forming The Lowest Pair with Palmer. Music To The Ears For Biggest Ever Donation From Stirling Fundraisers Fundraising cash of £30,000 from Stirling's The Scribbler’s Picnic Festival is music to the ears of local cancer charities. The Scribbler’s Picnic has donated an amazing £30,000 recently to charities who help people with cancer.

“We would like to say a massive thank you to all of our supporters who attended the events at the rugby club over the years and to the businesses, individuals who gave their time, support and sponsorship. Also a special shout out to all the musicians for making each event so memorable. It was much appreciated and we have been able to help a lot of people affected by cancer as a result. Everyone should be really proud of what has been achieved.” Gordon Brown, Eilidh Brown’s father said: “We can't thank the Scribblers Picnic enough for their support. It is a great boost to us and it makes it all the more sweeter that we are two Stirling charities. Great work and thank you.”

Meanwhile Stirling Albion FC, The Scribbler’s Picnic and Prudential UK & Europe have collaborated to create an exciting new family friendly community event – Binos Live. The trio have joined forces to create a day of football and music which kicks off on Sunday 25 June at Stirling Albion FC, Stirling Sports Village. The Scribbler’s Picnic will be hosting two stages of live music, a food village, stalls and kid’s activities. The Scribbler’s Picnic fundraising group was set up following the death of local musician, writer and teacher Graham Whitelaw who died of cancer in 2001. The group which holds musicrelated events was named after Graham’s column in the Stirling Observer newspaper – ‘The Scribbler’. The annual Scribbler’s Picnic community music festival and fun day was held at Stirling Rugby Club for 15 years until 2016 when restrictions put on using the venue contributed to the decision by the group to make that festival the last at the rugby club. The committee also decided it would be a good opportunity to take some time out. Graham’s daughter Katy Whitelaw said: “This week is the anniversary of my dad’s death (the first week in April) so it is fitting that we are marking it with this presentation from the fundraising efforts of a really wonderful group of people. It is the biggest amount we have ever donated and marks 15 years of hard work, kindness and dedication from all of our volunteers.

overcome these issues, and in particular, finding that place or those people who can help you do that, whether physical or metaphysical, whilst also accepting the painful truth that it may never be possible to fully escape the darkness but instead work on growing stronger to keep it at bay.” Producer Bruce Rintoul (Fatherson, Twin Atlantic) and mixer Phil Gornell (Bring Me The Horizon, All Time Low) worked with the boys on the single. In Scotland, The Skinny, The List, The Daily Record and The Herald are amongst the band’s supporters, whilst elsewhere Rock Sound, Kerrang!, Team Rock and Amazing Radio have previously covered the band. We Came From Wolves have amassed a strong live following, working hard to build their fan base from the ground up, playing shows up and down the country. Places Unfamiliar hit new heights for the band, playlisted on the official Spotify Rock Charts in the UK, Germany and France. In April and May, the band embark on a Scottish tour to promote the single, with shows planned at various festivals over the summer and another UK and European tour in October as they bring their raw energy, passion and hearton-sleeve rock to audiences old and new. www.wecamefromwolves.co.uk https://twitter.com/WCFWmusic www.facebook.com/wecamefromwolves

TINA MAY & BRIAN KELLOCK :: Celebrating Ella & Oscar Tour tour dates - 10-14 May Singer Tina May and Edinburgh’s world class pianist Brian Kellock take their Celebrating Ella & Oscar programme out on the road in Scotland during May to mark jazz singing legend Ella Fitzgerald’s centenary year.

“I think most jazz singers will have listened to and learned something from Ella,” says May. “The Ella & Oscar album is really a masterclass with great songs like Midnight Sun and April in Paris, and I’m really lucky to have Brian, who is one of the best pianists in the business, accompanying me on this tour.” May knows about April in Paris, having been a

Fitzgerald has long been an inspiration to the award-winning, Gloucestershire-born May and her 1975 recording with Oscar Peterson is a particular favourite.

As with Kellock, whose CV includes dates with Stanley Turrentine, Sheila Jordan and Art Farmer, May has gone on to sing with numerous jazz luminaries including pianists Stan Tracey, Enrico Pieranunzi and Ray Bryant. Indeed, she recorded her album Tina May Sings the Ray Bryant Songbook with Bryant at the piano in the legendary Rudy Van Gelder Studio in New Jersey, scene of countless classic recording sessions, with Van Gelder himself at the controls. Her most recent album, Café Paranoia, celebrates the great singer Mark Murphy, who died in 2015, but she always returns to the songs she learned from Ella Fitzgerald.

Most of the songs are built around the characters, and lyrics of the classic folk songs featured in started working out new tunes for them. Reimagined with new melodies, Redwood Mountain breathe new life into these wonderful old songs, with subjects redolent of another age - railroad men and buffalo, conmen, stealers and dealers, ramblers, gamblers and whores, outsiders, outlaws and hobos, lost loves and rye whiskey – but which are still vibrant today. Add in a couple of Owens originals (the instrumental The Two Davies Waltz and final track Take it Easy, But Take It), stripped back to mostly just vocals, guitar and fiddle and you’ll find a heady brew, a pure, organic blend of the old with the new GIGnotes ..... BRINA & THE TRIBAL GLOBAL COLLECTIVE :: Glasgow + Edinburgh Jamaica sings Robert Burns :: http://jamaicasingsburns.com/ Jamaican roots-reggae artist Brina, performing with her highenergy Tribal Global Collective Band, creates a dynamic dialogue between her homeland’s signature music and its African kindred styles, together with funk, gospel, rock, and Latin elements, all underpinned by her message of justice, equality, liberation, oneness and love. Brina will be performing reggae versions of

Burns songs from the upcoming album 'Jamaica Sings Robert Burns', including her much acclaimed versions of Warmongerers By Name and The Slave’s Lament. The power of Jamaica’s greatest export – reggae music - combined with the immortal words of Scotland’s national bard, Robert Burns. In 1786 Robert Burns had booked his ticket to Jamaica. Brina says: “Our idea is to give a taste of how his songs might

have sounded if he had gone and settled there. It unites Scottish songs with Jamaican music and is one of the biggest musical cross cultural projects to happen between Jamaica and Scotland. I'm very excited about opening musical pathways between my two countries. One of my many musical plans for 2017 is the release of the album, Jamaica Sings Robert Burns” Brina is originally from Jamaica but is now based in Scotland. She has released 1 solo album to date, and has worked with a wealth of Jamaican musicians including Sly Dunbar, Toots Hibbert and Addis Pablo (who is featured on her recent The Slave’s Lament single). on our blog now ..... TRACK OF THE MONTH: Bruises // Lewis Capaldi There must be something in the water, because Scotland can’t stop producing the next big thing. This time, it’s in the shape of Lewis Capaldi and his jaw dropping debut, Bruises. It seems the songwriter can turn any emotion into a work of art as he molds the many feelings of a break-up (frustrated, sad, lost, desirous) into a beautifully crafted track – a testament to a past relationship. His voice beams off the minimal backdrop of sounds, echoing to its bitter end. Capaldi may be a newcomer, but his name lurks around Glasgow already and after selling out the renowned King Tuts Wah Wah Hut venue; it’d be safe to place all bets on the artist for 2017.

Guillotine is the culmination of the band's 8 year weekly residency at Edinburgh's notorious Jazz Bar. This is definitely a huge step up in Mike Kearney's production and writing style. Enjoy! The Poets and the Beats from Musician / producer Paul Armour (ex Seminal Glasgow Surf Pop Band “The Cuban Heels") “The album is very much a beat combo sound. Punchy with grooves using classic retro instruments: Rhodes Wurlitzer & Hammond, vintage amps and guitars. The feel is a mix of styles, melodic & rhythmic. Lyrically quirky with themes of hope and renewal. A recent review from Rock Fm. Scotland described the sound as “Weller-ish” but more refined! It’s all in the ear of the beholder. Enjoy the beats…” Listen/Watch: https://soundcloud.com www.youtube.com Available from: www.birnamcdshop.com www.paularmour.co.uk https://twitter.com/paul497191 www.facebook.com/paul.armour.31

GRAHAM MacKENZIE

This Girl, This Woman

Stories Untold

Crossing Borders

Stories Untold is an intimate and inspiring collection of original songs, tackling topics including child soldiers, crime and punishment, loss, and love in its many forms. Early responses have been positive, with five stars from Spiral Earth, and album of the week from Iain Anderson and Celtic Music Radio.

‘Crossing Borders’ was a Celtic Connections commission in 2015 written for a nine piece ensemble and represents Graham's musical journey to date, reflecting on places, people and musical styles that have influenced him and his music. The piece draws on vibrant Scottish, Irish and Cape Breton styles and is written in four sections, each highlighting one of these cultures. It brings together a fusion of traditional and classical styles in his own composition.

This Girl, This Woman is the debut album by 57-yearold singer Jude Adams, who discovered her talent following a life-changing M.E. diagnosis. The album, which Jude describes as soulful pop with a 60s twist, contains 10 tracks all written and sung by Jude, and produced and arranged by musician Janette Mason. Jude comments: " I always loved to sing, and I always did, but behind closed doors. It was only when I got to 50 that I summoned the courage to start singing in public. And then two years later I was diagnosed with M.E. Performing, work and many ways in which I lived my life had to stop or change significantly. It was debilitating, but led to a lot of personal reflection, and ultimately the silver lining of discovering a passion for songwriting." Born and brought up in Inverness, Liza has been involved in folk music for many years. Although classically trained in piano, her family background of a big Glasgow-Irish clan of musicians and singers on her father's side, and the Gaelic song tradition of her mother's Isle of Lewis heritage, inevitably meant a strong pull towards the folk scene. On her first solo album of original songs and tunes, Fine 'n' Rosy, Liza brings together some top players, including cousin, Rua Macmillan, winner of Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician Of the Year 2009, Alasdair Taylor of the Folk Award-winning band, The Elephant Sessions, and Robin Abbot of The Mystic Shoes. This intimate album comprises reflective ballads and uptempo songs with catchy choruses, complemented by rollicking trad-style tunes and dreamy instrumentals.

Edinburgh based trio Stillhound announce the release of ‘Bury Everything’ along with single and album opener ‘Spring Conscious,’ a vast and soaring pop track with Foals-esque guitar intricacies and towering chorus. Consisting of Fergus Cook, Laurie Corlett-Donald and Dave Lloyd, the band take inspiration from art, geography and the far flung soundscapes of their homeland, creating an avant-pop record with glacial electronics and packed with unashamed synth pop moments.

Wild Things

The Vivians 10th Anniversary Demos Album #TheVivians10yr - To mark their 10th anniversary of forming, cult indie punk band The Vivians will release a collection of songs spanning their tumultuous career. The self-titled album, digitally released 26th August 2016, will comprise newly mastered unreleased demos and rarities, recorded between 2006 and 2010, accompanied by a new video and artwork. Formed in August 2006, The Vivians dared to dream big and set out to achieve great things. From their humble beginnings in a basement rehearsal room in Edinburgh, through to splitting in April 2010, the band’s story is one of dreams, misguidance and brotherhood.

Wild Things is the first release from East Lothian Alt-Folk singer songwriter Baron Salmon. The four songs are tender tales of moving on, each one showcasing the musicianship, the fine singing and the mature songwriting of their creator. In these songs we also glimpse some of his influences, from Dylan to Bonnie Prince Billy, to Tallest Man on Earth, whilst never losing sight of the exciting new sound that belongs to Baron Salmon.

Orkney Folk Festival Orkney 25-28 May

One of Scotland’s longest-running folk festivals, celebrating its 35th outing in 2017, the Orkney Folk Festival is one of the most prolific events in the Scottish and UK folk calendars, and one of the highlights of Orkney’s diary of community events. An entirely voluntary run event, the festival annually attracts artists from all corners of the folk world - from leading international names to up and coming fresh faces - to Stromness, in Orkney’s West Mainland, for four days of concerts, ceilidhs, clubs, sessions, talks and craic. Artists and audiences are welcomed by and into Orkney’s own thriving folk scene, with Orcadian artists providing around two thirds of the festival programme. Line-up announced across December-March, with tickets on sale in April, around six weeks ahead of the event. This is relatively close to the festival itself, as the festival consists of around 35 individually programmed and ticketed events, rather than offering all-in-one day or weekend tickets. Artists visiting the festival perform on several occasions, though, offering a number of chances to catch them over the weekend.
