Over £3.1m announced to boost Scottish youth arts provision Youth Arts Hubs: Aberdeen and North East : Argyll : Ayrshire : Edinburgh : Fife : Glasgow : Highlands : Moray : West Dumbartonshire
Creative Scotland has announced £3.1m support to help boost youth arts provision across Scotland. The funding is being announced as part of Scotland’s National Youth Arts Strategy Time To Shine and will be used to create a network of regional Youth Arts Hubs across the country. The Hubs – in Aberdeen and North East, Argyll, Ayrshire, Edinburgh, Fife, Glasgow, Highlands, Moray and West Dumbartonshire - are being formed through partnerships between local and national arts and youth services providers, to increase access to youth arts across Scotland across a range of art forms. Acting as focal points for regional youth arts delivery, the Hubs will nurture and celebrate ambition, enthusiasm and talent in Scotland’s young people by improving the regional infrastructure. Young people will be central to the decision making process and development of the Youth Arts Hubs. Leonie Bell, Director of Arts & Engagement, Creative Scotland, said: “Through making connections and developing new projects these Hubs will enable more children and young people to take part in creative activities close to where they live. These Hubs will not only create opportunities for young people to shine and express themselves creatively; but also by placing them at the heart of the creation and delivery of the new work, the young people will develop skills and expertise which will be invaluable to their futures.” Fiona Hyslop, Cabinet Sectary for Culture Secretary, said: “The Scottish Government is committed to supporting all of Scotland’s children and young people to flourish and achieve in the arts, and to make Scotland an international leader for creativity for children and young people. The Youth Arts Hubs will build on the well-established links between culture, education, youth employment and personal development, and will help us to deliver a step change in our youth arts provision in Scotland.”

Inside Opera: Live! Seven of the UK’s opera companies have joined forces to produce Inside Opera: Live, a unique online event offering unprecedented behind the scenes access and insight into the opera being created and performed in theatres across the country. In a collaboration, the scope of which is a first for the arts, the Companies – Scottish Opera, Northern Ireland Opera, Welsh National Opera, English National Opera, English Touring Opera, Opera North and The Royal Opera – will come together on 10 May as part of a Europe-wide celebration of opera. Designed for anyone who is new to opera, but with obvious appeal for opera fans, this ambitious event will be hosted on YouTube. It combines live streamed and filmed footage to give viewers a chance to experience opera across the UK from the inside, and encourages them to find out about the opera activity on their doorstep. On the day Scottish Opera will be showing a film of the creation of the costumes for Lisa Milne as Donna Elvira in SO’s recent production of Don Giovanni from initial design through construction, fittings, rehearsals through to the first performance. Live activity will have the SO Community Choir gives a performance at Glasgow’s Riverside Museum. It will air specially commissioned behind the scenes films from all the participating companies, live interviews with singers and directors, and live links to rehearsals, backstage and community-based activities. In the course of a packed afternoon, viewers will have the chance to hear from performers just before they go on stage; find out how a singer prepares for a new role; meet the people behind an opera production and learn what they do; see what it takes to make and take an opera out on tour; and understand the skill that goes into making a period costume.
Scottish Opera
Throughout the event there will also be the opportunity using #insideopera to put questions live via Twitter to the companies’ artistic directors. Since 2007, opera companies from all over Europe have been collaborating on The European Opera Days – an open invitation to discover opera in all its forms on the weekend closest to 9 May, Europe Day. Scottish National Jazz Orchestra with renowned pianist Makoto Ozone Inverness (25 April) : Edinburgh (26 April) : Glasgow (27 April)
This April sees a welcome shower of shimmering piano notes over Scotland as the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra (SNJO) premieres a new arrangement of Mozart’s 9th Piano Concerto. The SNJO has invited the superbly gifted pianist, Makoto Ozone to create a vivid and inventive re-imagining of Mozart’s 9th Piano Concerto for piano and Jazz Big Band. It promises to be a unique and memorable experience where the freedom of jazz is wedded to classical discipline. The result will be an enthralling addition to the jazz repertoire. Tommy Smith’s stunning arrangement of Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue also offers the ideal complement to Ozone’s Mozart, matching two iconic compositions in an intriguing programme full of life-affirming wit and artistic verve. Makoto Ozone is no stranger to some of the most prestigious concert platforms in the world, having shared the stage with, among others, The New York Philharmonic Orchestra
and the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra. He is recognized worldwide as a classical and jazz pianist of equal accomplishment, and has made more than 34 recordings, many of them with his own jazz trio. He is noted too for his collaborations with, among many others, Gary Burton, Chick Corea, Ellis Marsalis and the SNJO itself on their 2011 album Celebration. The SNJO have begun 2014 with ambitious ideas, innovative programmes and bravura performances and earned standing ovations during recent shows featuring Kurt Elling in Syntopicon, and Revisiting Coltrane with Courtney Pine. More than that, audiences have been a bit shaken and more than a little stirred by the full measure of commitment from an impressive repertoire orchestra. Audiences in Scotland will be the first to appreciate the SNJO’s vibrantly, fresh approach to Mozart’s 9th Piano Concerto and to Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, two universally popular classical pieces. They can also look forward to an evening of sheer, unashamed enjoyment in the company of Makoto Ozone and Scotland’s National Jazz Orchestra. There will also be a free preconcert talk at 6.45pm.

He is particularly excited about Whisky in my Blood: “The label (Blue North, Finland) put the album out on heavy coloured vinyl as well as CD and digital download,” says Arcari. “And although this is my fifth album, the vinyl release makes it feel like my first ‘proper’ record!” Arcari is currently working on material for his next album scheduled for release later in 2014 on French label, Dixiefrog which released his 2012 album Nobody’s Fool. Arcari has shared the stage with major artists including country/ Americana legend Steve Earle, the mighty Alabama 3, Seasick Steve, Toby Keith and veteran blues-rocker Robin Trower. A regular at UK and European festivals, Arcari cites recent highlights as Glastonbury; Moulin Blues Festival in Holland; Belgium’s Peer Festival (alongside Jeff Beck, Joe Bonamassa and Steve Winwood); BluesAlive in the Czech Republic and Poland. Headline shows in the USA and mainland Europe as well as across the UK continue to take Arcari and his music to a wider audience beyond the confines of any specific genre.

Fallen Angels Club : Dan Stuart + Kathleen Haskard At The Glad Cafe Glasgow : Thursday 1 May : www.fallenangelsclub.com
The irrepressible, Dan Stuart – formerly of seminal Alt-Country rockers Green on Red during the 1980s – makes irregular forays into the music spotlight these days. But what an impact he makes when he does! His first solo record this century, “The Deliverance of Marlowe Billings” was released in 2012 to a round of top reviews. Then he toured, and included a memorable show at King Tut’s, which the respected americana-uk website reviewed as “80 minutes of unabashed fervour, intensity and commitment in every single song.” Dan’s just brought out a double CD, Arizona 1993-95 that includes his first solo record, “Can O’ Worms.” His songs have been performed by artists as varied as Manic Street Preachers, Richmond Fontaine, Jon Dee Graham and Vivian Girls, which Mr Stuart himself describes as: “strange bedfellows for sure.” Sinner/songwriter/expatriate Kathleen Haskard is a 4th generation native Californian based in London and spends her down time in a tipi in a canyon on the Pacific coast in the Santa Monica Mountains above Ventura County Line. She is a culturally aware musician who passionately believes in the healing power of music, people power and that the personal is most definitely political. 56n are Graeme Hawley (of Oldham) and Derek Martin (of Dundee), living in Edinburgh for over 18 years, and together for 15. Sleevenotes is their first album. It is not so much something that you listen to, as something that makes you feel you have been listened to. A record in sounds and words of the passing of time, during which love endured, relationships deepened, dreams stalled, and 56n sought refuge in the night sky, garden plants, and their neighbourhood. Personal and honest, it will feel familiar not just to audiences who have loved hearing these words on stage, but to new audiences who identify with the 21st century themes and its strong sense of artistic integrity. NordEste /NorthEast Album : cd / download Release Date: Out Now
A Brazilian percussionist, Allysson Velez travels to Huntly, Scotland. There he is touched by the very first contact with the Scottish Ceilidh and impressed by the common musical language of the north east of Scotland and the north east of Brazil. Here he worked with a special selection of local Scottish musicians and a musician from West Africa, who has settled in the area, to transform an encounter into a musical flow of exchanging gifts and virtues. This album, NordEste/ NorthEast, documents that exchange of Scottish and Brazillian music, which also inaugurates a new word, Ceilidhcatu, merging the words Ceilidh (a traditional Gaelic social gathering, which usually involves playing music and dancing) and Maracatu (a performance genre found in Pernambuco state, in northeastern Brazil), from which the musicians have taken their name. STEPHEN LEE 4 Orchestral Pieces Album : cd Release Date: Out Now
4 Orchestral Pieces is a body of work composed by Stephen Lee. Influences reflected in it include the rich, dark imagery of the art of Douglas Gordon and of Caravaggio, the melancholic vision and 'eternal solitude' of the poetry of James Thomson/Charles Baudelaire and the range and poignancy of the musicianship of Billy MacKenzie. Of the tracks, Before the Autumn Came (2 movements) was directly inspired by a Billy MacKenzie vocal melody. TradFest Edinburgh Dùn Èideann
Highlands and Islands Music and Dance Festival
Edinburgh 29 April - 11 May
Oban 2-4 May
TradFest Edinburgh · Dùn Èideann is a vibrant festival of folk arts celebrating music, song, storytelling, dance, folk drama, arts and crafts, literature, architecture, film and multi-media in the capital city. The core programming theme for 2014 is ‘Revival and Renaissance’ which will explore the cyclical way in which Scotland’s folk arts burst into life and influence every other aspect of culture. Over 70 events were showcased between 24 April and 6 May 2013 in Scotland’s Capital with locals and visitors both discovering a feast of culture in the Festival City!
The Highlands and Islands Music and Dance Festival has developed into one of Scotland’s major cultural festivals, and takes place annually in Oban, Scotland. The event has developed to include new special events and competitions, and the festival now offers over 1100 participants 125 competition classes in eleven disciplines including piping, accordion, fiddle, clarsach, piano, recorder, woodwind & brass, singing, highland dancing and choreography. This is the festival's 31st year and 2014 is going to be their biggest yet with new venues and over 1100 participants, 125 competition classes in eleven disiplines.
The cream of Scotland’s songwriting talent is teaming up for a series of unique concerts to celebrate the memory of the late Gerry Rafferty in his hometown of Paisley. Bring it all Home will bring together some of the finest Scottish artists of the past few decades for a star-studded tribute to Gerry and his life’s work. The festival – a key part of the Homecoming Scotland celebrations – coincides with a two-month exhibition of the singer’s memorabilia at Paisley Museum, featuring artwork from his friend and another of Paisley’s best-known sons, John Byrne. www.bringitallhome.co.uk
Northern Nashville Country Music Festival Caithness 18-20 April In 2004 we took a gamble and ran our first ever Northern Nashville Caithness Country Music Festival (NNCCMF), which thankfully was a great success. Over the years it has gone from strength to strength, with country music fans converging on Caithness over Easter Weekend to be part of this 3-day 5-show extravaganza of live country music. This is truly an international event featuring top class acts from the USA, Canada, Europe, Ireland and the U.K. alongside our wealth of local talent and youth bands. www.nncmc.co.uk
Big Day In Edinburgh 20 April In what will be the second year of the 'Big Day In Festival' at Edinburgh's Electric Circus, The Pictish Trail, aka name Johnny Lynch will headline it along with two groups bookending either side of the electro spectrum. Recently returning from SXSW in Texas, Glasgow’s Prides operate with the essence of light pop as their surgical tools, while the disturbed, turbulent beats of Roman Nose will be laid out on the table by the trio and ruthlessly toyed with.
