Born To Be Wide Partners With Made In Adelaide To Host Special 'Edinburgh Festivals' Evening Born To Be Wide returns on 9 August to co-host a special evening with Made in Adelaide and Arts South Australia at Edinburgh’s Summerhall. Beginning with a discussion panel focusing on how Edinburgh’s festivals can help emerging music talent, the free event will also feature live showcases, a reception and DJs. “This is an amazing opportunity for the Scottish music scene and industry to connect with their South Australian counterparts,” says Born To Be Wide founder, Olaf Furniss. He adds that the panel will explore opportunities for the contemporary music scene, which in Edinburgh has been hit by recent club closures and during August, faces the additional challenge of many key venues programming comedy acts rather than music. “The discussion will provide a valuable insight into how the festivals can serve as a proactive platform for musicians, promoters, labels and managers.”

Adam Bulley & Chas Mackenzie on the road One of the most highly rated duo’s in the country, Adam Bulley & Chas Mackenzie deliver a fiery, energy fuelled array of acoustic music styles. Weaving effortlessly between Bluegrass, Gypsy Jazz, Folk and Pop, they have performed on some of the biggest stages in the UK, alongside some of the world’s greatest musicians. Originally performing under the name of Wingin’ It, the duo won a coveted “Danny Kyle” Award at Celtic Connections in 2007. Other highlights include performing regularly at the acclaimed Ullapool Guitar Festival, alongside a host of the world’s top guitarists, as well as multiple appearances at Celtic Connections. In 2012 they were commissioned to write 10 minutes of new music to celebrate the life of the renowned piper Gordon Duncan, which was then performed to a sold out Perth Concert Hall. In 2013 the duo released their debut album “For the Many”. Making full use of the recording studio, as well as some of Scotland’s most in-demand session musicians, the project soon took on a life of its own. It has received widespread acclaim from musicians and critics alike.

Most recently the duo were asked to support the legendary guitarist Larry Carlton at Celtic Connections in 2016. Propelling the acoustic guitars and mandolin to new levels of expression and excitement their live show is at once an informal, life affirming and memorable musical experience. “Above all, these guys are entertainers. The technique is masterful, the musical discipline exemplary, but what comes across most strongly is not the dazzling display of flatpicking, but that they are having real fun on stage, and that they can communicate this effortlessly to the audience” Richard Lindsay “they were a dazzling, jazzy, very funny, breath of fresh air. They left some traditionalist mouths hanging open, but the boys absolutely nailed it.” The Herald GIGnotes ..... 10 August: Reay Village Hall, Thurso. www.lytharts.org.uk 11 August: Lyth Arts Centre, Wick. www.lytharts.org.uk 12 August: Carnegie Hall, Clashmore, Dornoch. SOUND CYCLE

(feat. Young Scottish Borders musicians)

:: album :: 'Weave'

release date - out now :: www.soundcycle.org

SOUND CYCLE, the Borders Youth Music Forum, are delighted to announce the first SOUND CYCLE album : “WEAVE” . The album was released for download and streaming in June as part of the Borders Book Festival Celebrations. Over the last few months Sound Cycle, The Borders Youth Music Forum, and Eyemouth Sound, The Eyemouth Music Initiative, have been working with young musicians from across the Scottish Borders on a variety of different projects. Both have been in the recording studio and were delighted to be given the opportunity to hold a joint album launch at the Borders Book Festival. The title of the album, “Weave” reflects the diverse music of young musicians who appear on the recordings, who although quite varied in sound and approach, all hail from the Scottish Borders, an area with such a unique identity and rich heritage. SOUND CYCLE would like to thank and congratulate all of their fantastic performers who joined us for the SOUND CYCLE ONE – WEAVE album launch at the Borders Book Festival. We Had a great night, with performances from ERIN HIGHTON, loop pedal maestro MILLIE HANLON COLE, CRAIG JEFFREY, JACK HINKS and two separate line up’s from The EYEMOUTH SOUND PROJECT :ESP Here are some of the talented young artists who performed at the launch and feature on the album, available for streaming and download via Bandcamp .....

Millie Hanlon Cole Millie is from Peebles, and is a uniquely talented singer and songwriter , who plays acoustic guitar and uses a loop pedal to achieve an amazing sound both live and in the studio. She began writing at the age of fourteen and has been performing at small local festivals and pubs, including this year’s Kendal Calling festival, ever since. She recreates the sounds of a ‘one woman band’ with the help of

her loop station to create layers of alternative, acoustic melodies. Her influences are an eclectic mix of sounds ranging from The Smiths to the likes of Alt-J and Bombay Bicycle Club. She has also been compared to a young Laura Marling and KT Tunstall accompanied with an “impressive depth and range” vocally.

Erin Highton

won the senior section of the Scottish Youth Brass Band Championships held in Perth Concert Hall in November 2016. As well as the national title of Scottish Champions, this achievement brought qualification for the European Youth Brass Band Championships and the Band undertook a very successful trip to Ostend, Belgium in April 2017.

Erin is a guitarist and singer songwriter from Selkirk, currently studying nursing in Edinburgh. Erin grew up listening to Adele and Brandi Carlile, and starting teaching herself Craig Jeffrey guitar and writing songs at the age of 15. Erin has a beautiful voice and writes poignant and affecting songs with a pop sensibility. Sound Cycle have collaborated with Erin on a remix of one of her songs, and both her acoustic version and the remix appear on the album.

Craig is a singersongwriter from Galashiels, and has been making a name for his melodic and sensitive songwriting for the last few years. His ‘Connected EP‘ was released in March 2013 on Vertical Records Eggshell Goblin (EgGo) and Bandcamp and his Is a multi talented and extremely prolific new band “Mills” are composer of electronic music of different styles, about to release their debut album, also on from ambient to experimental to techno dance. On Vinyl Noise now ..... TRACK OF THE MONTH: The Peak Beneath The Sea // We Came From Wolves by Jamie Hart We Came from Wolves have earned a reputation as one of Scotland’s best upcoming bands since their formation in 2011. Their 2015 self-titled album was a successful blend of alt rock/pop that won them many plaudits including a Scottish alternative music award for “Best Rock”. The confidence that emits from the band is strikingly noticeable in new single, The Peak Beneath the Sea. Raw, punchy riffs are laced with a fluctuating lyrical delivery from frontman Kyle Burgess while backing screams punctuate most of the track. This changing pace can be felt most when drummer, Andy Donaldson is let loose during the chorus. It is commendable to hear a band try something new and even better when they succeed as well as We Came From Wolves have on The Peak Beneath the Sea. The track is a taste of what is to come as the band plan to go back into the recording studio to begin work on a second album this year.

BOB LESLIE

PAUL ANDERSON

Captain Glen's Comfort

Land and Sea

The High Summit

After many years as a well-known face on the band circuit, Bob Leslie’s re-invention of himself as an acoustic performer resulted in two well-received Americana CDs - In a Different World (2010) and Fat Cat (2011) - and a re-launch onto the folk circuit. There, his highly-crafted songs - some serious, some very funny indeed - had audiences showing lively appreciation. However, more and more, Bob found himself drawn to the challenge of writing in a more traditional Scottish vein - a medium, as it turned out, ideal for a musical storyteller.

Paul Anderson from Royal Deeside in Aberdeenshire is one of Scotland’s finest traditional fiddle players and The High Summit is his third album of self penned music and song. Like The Singing Land and Land of the Standing Stones before it, The High Summit celebrates the history, landscape and people of Paul’s beautiful North-East homeland. Joining Paul on The High Summit are a group of exceptional artists, highly respected in their own right and adding their own touch of magic to the album. Shona Donaldson on vocals (Scots Singer of the Year 2009 and first female winner of the Bothy Ballad Champion of Champions), Tony McManus on guitar (worldrenowned Scottish guitarist now based in Canada), Malcolm Jones on guitar and accordion (Runrig), Ale Carr on Cittern (Dreamer’s Circus), Ali Napier on keyboards (Miami Vince and former member of the Dougie MacLean Band) and James Gorgon on percussion (Albany show band and The Cutting Edge).

album / cd / Release Date: 8 September Captain Glen’s Comfort is the much awaited debut album from one of the folk scene’s fastest rising bands, Pons Aelius. Due out on September the 8th, the album showcases the sextet’s expansive sound and unique approach to the traditional music of Britain and beyond; from fiery bagpipe jigs to tender mandolin fronted soundscapes, and everything in between. Since winning a prestigious Celtic Connections Danny Kyle Award in their early days, Pons Aelius have spent the last two years tirelessly honing their sound on stages both at home and abroad, quickly earning themselves a reputation as one of the most exciting new names on the circuit. Stories Untold

Crossing Borders

Stories Untold is an intimate and inspiring collection of original songs, tackling topics including child soldiers, crime and punishment, loss, and love in its many forms. Early responses have been positive, with five stars from Spiral Earth, and album of the week from Iain Anderson and Celtic Music Radio.

‘Crossing Borders’ was a Celtic Connections commission in 2015 written for a nine piece ensemble and represents Graham's musical journey to date, reflecting on places, people and musical styles that have influenced him and his music. The piece draws on vibrant Scottish, Irish and Cape Breton styles and is written in four sections, each highlighting one of these cultures. It brings together a fusion of traditional and classical styles in his own composition.

This Girl, This Woman is the debut album by 57-yearold singer Jude Adams, who discovered her talent following a life-changing M.E. diagnosis. The album, which Jude describes as soulful pop with a 60s twist, contains 10 tracks all written and sung by Jude, and produced and arranged by musician Janette Mason. Jude comments: " I always loved to sing, and I always did, but behind closed doors. It was only when I got to 50 that I summoned the courage to start singing in public. And then two years later I was diagnosed with M.E. Performing, work and many ways in which I lived my life had to stop or change significantly. It was debilitating, but led to a lot of personal reflection, and ultimately the silver lining of discovering a passion for songwriting." Although classically trained in piano, her family background of a big Glasgow-Irish clan of musicians and singers on her father's side, and the Gaelic song tradition of her mother's Isle of Lewis heritage, inevitably meant a strong pull towards the folk scene. On her first solo album of original songs and tunes, Fine 'n' Rosy, Liza brings together some top players, including cousin, Rua Macmillan, winner of Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician Of the Year 2009, Alasdair Taylor of the Folk Award-winning band, The Elephant Sessions, and Robin Abbot of The Mystic Shoes.
