Scottish National Jazz Orchestra Presents :: ‘An American Journey’ with special guest composer and saxophonist, Bill Evans and directed by Tommy Smith
Hold on to your hats! This September, the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra (SNJO) welcomes U.S. tenor and soprano saxophonist Bill Evans for ‘American Journey’, an exciting road-trip through the heart and soul of American music. Come along for the ride as we map a multitude of musical byways including, funk, bop, blues, soul, bluegrass, folk and rock, firmly guided by a solid, reliable jazz compass. Bill Evans is a Grammy-nominated saxophone star, a prolific composer and a very high-profile collaborator. His credentials include a lengthy stint with Miles Davis and recordings with Herbie Hancock, John McLaughlin and the WDR Big Band. He has also previously guested with the SNJO for performances of Tommy Smith’s highly acclaimed Beauty and the Beast suite. This time around, he visits Scotland to share his musical vision of America with the SNJO, who have been widely praised in Europe, America and Japan for their warmth, originality, versatility and artistry. American music is all about energy, diversity and the pioneer spirit. The SNJO and Bill Evans intend to customize those differences in turbocharged jazz and fired-up improvisation. The sounds you will hear will be big, bold and profoundly modern, with familiar echoes from the past. It is music that enthusiastically encourages re-invention, yet remains respectful towards its traditional roots. Imagine then that you are travelling through a big country, taking instant pictures of the musical landscape along the way. These snapshots will suggest every, style, genre and idiom of American music in tunes with titles that partly explain where you’ve been and where you’re going. Dixie Hop, Celtic Junction, Hobo and Eyes of a Child are indicative of what to expect, but they also signpost the limitless horizons of contemporary jazz.

Jess Morgan + Nels Andrews :: Songs & Books Tour Scottish tour begins 3 October :: details + tickets @ www.jessmorgan.co.uk
Jess Morgan from England and Nels Andrews from the US have joined forces because they both - for the first time - have illustrated books to accompany the new music they want to bring to audiences in 2019. Jess and Nels wanted to showcase something on tour which would satisfy the most avid record sleeve-readers, comic book-worms, or just about anyone feeling lost in the digital age. Their co-headlined show promises an atmospheric concoction of songwriting, spoken word and fun visuals. They will tour in England and Scotland, through September and October. The two singer-songwriters met in 2011 on a grey, drizzling night in Leicester. Nels Andrews, a seasoned songwriter a long way from his home in Santa Cruz California, was touring his record of the time in the UK. His opening act was Norwich based Jess Morgan who was then just beginning
her career. They two singer-songwriters stayed friends, bumping into each other at shows and festivals on both sides of the atlantic and always finding time to grab coffee and talk song-writing. Nels and Jess are both fans of comic book illustration, film photography, and squeezing into a wetsuit and surfing on waves close to home home - The Pacific Ocean and The North Sea respectively. Both have brought out their music in analogue formats - Nels has a single out on luminous yellow flex-disk and Jess spent most of last year making her own 7” vinyl records in her kitchen. Jess' illustrated book of lyrics and short stories springs from the psyche of a touring artist, who finds romance in pylons, transport systems, and concrete. She writes gutsy modern folk songs telling stories full of sadness and bite. Trash Magazine called it “The sort of thing you put on your headphones when walking alone and wanting to feel like you’re in your own gritty British love story.” Last year Jess performed live on Radio 2, and opened for A-ha! in Norway and at London’s O2 Arena. Her 2019 release is called ‘Everything I did last year.’ Nels Andrews is a journeyman in the craft of melody who is here to tell you a story. He is based in Santa Cruz, California but has toured successfully in the UK turning heads with his storytelling lyrics. Nels' new record Pigeon & the Crow is new for 2019 and comes with a beautiful graphic novella in which Nels’ supernatural ballads sprawl the pages with colourful illustrations by artist Mike Benzce. “Nels is a master carver, an artist patient and obsessed enough to turn a whale of an idea into something delicate and beautiful from any angle.” - Anais Mitchell. Arcade aka Heidi Talbot + Adam Holmes :: album + tour release date 4 October :: tour dates 20 Sept - 23 October
Ireland’s Heidi Talbot and Scotland’s Adam Holmes have joined forces for the first time to create an album of original material together under the name Arcade, which they will tour this autumn. Between them they have been nominated for multiple BBC Folk Awards, SAY awards, Irish music awards and played for First Ministers and US Presidents. Their UK tour comes as they release their debut duo album ‘Face The Fall’ on the 4 October. Produced by Arcade and Cameron Malcolm, with additional production by Louis Abbott (Admiral Fallow), it features ten tracks, nine of the ten written by Adam and Heidi and a song written by folk noir singer songwriter Rachel Sermanni. The record evokes the restless and classic feeling of Fleetwood Mac and Tom Petty, whilst keeping its feet planted in the present day in its rich electronic textures and allegoric content.
alongside Phil Cunningham who reads poetry on the last track, ‘All We Ever Are’. Heidi and Adam will be joined by pianist Tom Gibbs on tour. Heidi said: “Adam and I have been touring together in different bands over the last few years. We really love singing together and started writing songs over the last year. As the songs progressed, we decided to make an album. “It became obvious very quickly that the songs we enjoyed writing together weren’t necessarily folk songs. We both believe in going wherever the song feels good to go and not feel like we need to stay in the confines of what we’ve created before. The outcome is not really a folk record, it’s more pop, but it’s still us and not a completely alien sound. A little different to what either of us has created before but we've put our hearts into this music. We hope people enjoy it. “We appreciate each and every single person who supports us by listening to our music or coming along to a show and we're looking forward to performing these songs live and setting them free into the world!” Heidi Talbot was born in Ireland, became a folk star in the USA as a member of the Irish American band Cherish the Ladies, and now lives in Edinburgh. With a background like that, it's hardly surprising she should develop a style that switches easily between Celtic and Americana, but subtlety is Talbot’s magic ingredient.
Adam said: “We wanted to try and create a sound that felt different to anything we have previously worked on. We decided to do as much of it as we could at home to buy ourselves more time. It ended up being a few months of finding sounds at mines on the MacBook and chipping away at She has shared the stage and recorded with Mark Knopfler, Graham Coxon (Blur), Eddi Reader, Idlewild, Matt Rollings, King Creosote and Tim the overall bones of it. O'Brien. Heidi has been nominated for multiple BBC Radio 2 folk awards, “Then we got our friend Cameron to set up Heidi’s garage as a studio and Irish Music Awards and Scottish Traditional music awards. spent a few weeks there having various people come in and play. It was Edinburgh based singer song writer Adam Holmes with his band The the only way we could have created this record. Some of the sessions Embers combine the rhythm and blues, country and folk music textures were really tough and long. Everyone involved felt ambitious to see how of classic artists such as The Band, Neil Young and Ryan Adams and The far we could push it.” Cardinals. Tom Gibbs, Jennifer Austin and Euan Burton also feature on the record Adam’s musical education began in the infamous folk clubs of Edinburgh taken along by his mother, a huge fan of UK folk music. He witnessed the legendary live sessions that took place. His father’s influence was equally strong, a love of classic American singer songwriters (notably Neil Young and Townes Van Zandt) which he passed onto to his son, now evident in the transatlantic quality to Adam’s music. Trikala
double album cd / download Release Date: Out Now
Created over three years in three locations (Scotland/Chennai/Kolkata), Thacker’s third release creating new sound worlds through his immersion in Indian classical, folk and spiritual traditions is the epic double album Trikala (Sanskrit for the three tenses of time, past, present and future), featuring 13 performers from the subcontinent and Europe.
Reflections from an Airport is a must-buy album. It’s an album for busy people who have earned the right to take a moment to stop and let the world drift by. It’s for people who deserve ‘me time’. So indulge and treat yourself to some time away from the pressures that life may throw at you. The album has songs that will make you smile, make you laugh, make you cry and make you think. Drawn from life’s experiences, each song tells a story and paints a picture we can all relate too. It touches on basic human truths we all share in common... like love won and lost in all its guises. Andy writes songs for adults. His songs are for people who have lived a full life. For people who can relate to the highs and lows of daily living and know it’s not all ‘happy ever after but the ride can be fun.’ Listen to the songs and discover this for yourself.

JOHN GRAHAM & JIM JACK Sae Will We Yet album / cd / Release Date: out now
John Graham and Jim Jack’s debut album features an eclectic mix of many of the favourite songs from their live act with contributions from some of the most talented contemporary songwriters from Scotland and further afield. Graeme Miles’ haunting ‘Eldorado’ hints at a life of missed opportunities while Iain Ingram’s ‘Calton Rose’ and ‘Braes o’ Appin’ are love songs in the Scottish tradition and Steven Clark’s ‘Coming Home’ talks of the plight of the many refugees cast adrift in the world today. Jim King’s ‘West Coast Days’ and ‘Home To The Kyles’ from the pen of Duncan McCrone and Celly Paterson evoke memories of summer days on the Clyde Coast. From earlier days of the folk revival come Ewan MacColl’s ‘Manchester Rambler’ and Matt McGinn’s enigmatic ‘Magic Shadow Show’. John and Jim’s love of Americana is also represented in the rollicking ‘Truck Driving Man’. John and Jim’s act recalls much of the spirit of the folk clubs in the 60s and 70s with plenty of chorus singing and a fair measure of humour thrown in. scotland's new releases ..... album : single : ep / cd : vinyl : download JAMIE MACDONALD & CHRISTIAN GAMAUF The Pipe Slang
JON BUDWORTH Jon Budworth is a singer/songwriter originally from Lancashire but now very much an honorary Yorkshireman living in the bustling market town of Otley. Jon is a relative late-comer to the wonderful world of folk and acoustic music, having spent many years cast adrift in the dark and seedy underbelly of rock’n’roll. Jon changed musical direction in 2010 after happening upon a Youtube video of Richard Thompson playing his beautiful and evocative song Beeswing. There has been no looking back ever since! Jon cites his influences, amongst others, as John Renbourn, Nic Jones and, of course, Richard Thompson.

The musical partnership of the Scottish pipes and fiddle is one that is quintessentially and historically Hebridean. Jamie MacDonald and Christian Gamauf have taken this format and incorporated influences from places such as Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia and Asturias in the north of Spain, putting their own stamp on the music. Jamie and Christian met while living and studying on the Isles of Uist and began playing together at local concerts and events. After travelling to Asturias on a musical and cultural exchange project, along with performances at Ceòl on the Croft, Celtic Connections and Celtic Colours Festivals, the duo started working on their debut album, The Pipe Slang. The album features the traditional music of the Hebrides and includes songs from the Isle of Tiree as well as self-penned material and tunes from further afield.

LINSEY AITKEN & KEN CAMPBELL Shore To Shore album / cd / Release Date: out now
This is our second CD as a duo, with a mixture of new songs and instrumentals, many focussing on our Scottish connections around the world, each with a story, and most of all about people and histories of the past and present. Fortunately, people seem to really like what we do, and ask what kind of music we perform. The answer is not one genre or another, but a blending of everyone and everything we have met along the way. A coming together of both our musical journeys, combined into one together, with elements of our respective musical backgrounds in Celtic, Classical, Traditional, Contemporary Music and all else. But most of all our music is about people, and all those who have influenced us and inspired us along the way.

scotland's new releases ..... album : single : ep / cd : vinyl : download BOB LESLIE
PAUL ANDERSON
AULD NEW HEIDS
Land and Sea
The High Summit
AULD NEW HEIDS - Volume 1
After many years as a well-known face on the band circuit, Bob Leslie’s re-invention of himself as an acoustic performer resulted in two well-received Americana CDs - In a Different World (2010) and Fat Cat (2011) - and a re-launch onto the folk circuit. There, his highly-crafted songs - some serious, some very funny indeed - had audiences showing lively appreciation. However, more and more, Bob found himself drawn to the challenge of writing in a more traditional Scottish vein - a medium, as it turned out, ideal for a musical storyteller.
Paul Anderson from Royal Deeside in Aberdeenshire is one of Scotland’s finest traditional fiddle players and The High Summit is his third album of self penned music and song. Like The Singing Land and Land of the Standing Stones before it, The High Summit celebrates the history, landscape and people of Paul’s beautiful North-East homeland. Joining Paul on The High Summit are a group of exceptional artists, highly respected in their own right and adding their own touch of magic to the album. Shona Donaldson on vocals (Scots Singer of the Year 2009 and first female winner of the Bothy Ballad Champion of Champions), Tony McManus on guitar (worldrenowned Scottish guitarist now based in Canada), Malcolm Jones on guitar and accordion (Runrig), Ale Carr on Cittern (Dreamer’s Circus), Ali Napier on keyboards (Miami Vince and former member of the Dougie MacLean Band) and James Gorgon on percussion (Albany show band and The Cutting Edge).

This album embraces all that was great about the golden days of the scottish folk scene in the 1960s/70s. It is a catalogue of some of the best and most popular songs of the time written by folk legends such as Ewan MacColl, Alex Campbell, Hamish Henderson, Matt McGinn, Archie Fisher, Jim McLean and Mary Brookesbank. Also Robert Burns and Sir Walter Scott have a song each on the album. A quartet of four of Scotland’s most experienced performers brings together the vocal talents of brothers IAN and FRASER BRUCE along with the exceptional musical skills of PETE CLARK on fiddle and GREGOR LOWREY on accordion. It has to be said that IAN BRUCE is pretty efficient on guitar, to complete the instrumental section. Available from: www.birnamcdshop.com
