Cabinet Secretary for Culture and External Affairs, Fiona Hyslop recently joined young musicians, filmmakers and dancers who are developing their career skills thanks to the confiscated funds from criminal activity. Ms Hyslop was announcing new funding of £3million for CashBack for Creativity, at a launch event in Edinburgh. The funding announcement is an increase of a third from the previous period, which will be distributed over the next three years through the Scottish Government’s CashBack for Communities programme, which redistributes the proceeds of crime to benefit young people. In the last three years (2011-2013) £2.25 million has been invested in CashBack for Creativity, providing over 15,000 opportunities for young people in Scotland to participate in arts activities they would not have otherwise had access to.

A free one-day training seminar for music companies, hosted jointly by the BPI and the Scottish Music Industry Association (SMIA), will take place in Glasgow on Thursday 21 August, the two music organisations have announced.

“The support currently being offered by the BPI through their Music Export Growth Scheme is a progressive example of how targeted funding for independents in the international markets can help artists in the key early stages of their international development. Chemikal Underground was delighted to have benefitted from this scheme for our own artist Holy Mountain and it's proved invaluable."

The first half of the event - which will be for BPI and SMIA Members Only - will see delegates receive a digital marketing master class hosted by Music Ally. This workshop will cover how to be Socially Savvy and make the most of YouTube. Social Savvy will cover the finer details of all the major social media platforms and will provide tips and tricks on how to get profiles looking enticing in no time. The YouTube session will look at how to get the most out of a channel, how to optimise videos and, importantly, how to monetise your artists’ view count.

The BPI was formed in 1973 and is the representative voice of the UK recorded music business. As a trade organisation we promote recorded music in the UK and worldwide and champion the rights and interests of a broad range of members, including hundreds of independent music labels and companies and the UK’s three major record company groups – Sony Music Entertainment UK, Universal Music UK and Warner Music UK. In 2013 our members accounted for approximately 90% of all recorded music purchased in the UK – the world’s fourth largest music market – as well as 1 in 8 albums sold around the globe.

Looking forward to the event, BPI Director of Independent Membership, Chris Tams, said: “Now is a fantastic time to be venturing up to Glasgow - we hope to capture the excitement and creativity that is bubbling in the city as a result of the Commonwealth Games and equip music businesses with the knowledge they need to make more of the opportunities available to them. We want Scottish music companies to be aware of and tap into the support on offer. “This event is just a taster of what we hope to deliver in Scotland in the year ahead through training initiatives, educational support and – of course – The Big Music Project which will provide further funding for internships to independent companies across the nation.

The event is free for all attendees and will be held in the city centre at Glasgow’s Centre for Contemporary Arts. Early booking is advised as places are limited. For more details or to register interest in the event, contact Chris Tams, BPI Director of Independent Membership at chris.tams@bpi.co.uk

www.bpi.co.uk www.smia.org.uk https://twitter.com/TheSMIA https://twitter.com/BPI_Music

“It’s great to be partnering with the SMIA and we hope that this joint initiative can bring added value to both organisations’ memberships.” The second half of the event – open to all music companies in Scotland and the North of England - will comprise a content protection session delivered by BPI’s in-house Anti-Piracy Team and a funding workshop, with a particular focus on how to apply for funding under the Music Export Growth Scheme. The Music Export Growth Scheme offers grants ranging from £5,000 - £50,000 to UK-registered independent music companies to assist them with marketing campaigns when looking to introduce successful UK music projects overseas. Voicing his support for the joint partnership, Stewart Henderson, Chair of the SMIA and Director of Glasgow-based record label Chemikal Underground, said: "It's more important than ever that musicians are given as much support and assistance as possible in making a sustainable career out of their art. Effectively protecting their copyright and learning more about the support networks and funding opportunities available to them will help them along that road and the SMIA is delighted to partner with the BPI in delivering this seminar.

Hive of Creative Dundee 'Musician’s Award' Applications Industry Buzzes Now Open - Grants Into Scotland ..... Honeycomb - Creative Works

up to £500 available Closing date 5 September : Download Application Form @

www.dundeemusiciansaward.co.uk

ScreenHI are delighted to announce the launch of Honeycomb - Creative Works, a new EU-funded initiative aimed at helping would-be creative entrepreneurs across the west of Scotland.

A number of grants, up to a maximum of £500, are available. The Award, staged by Leisure and Culture Dundee, was established in 2008 to support the work of outstanding Dundee-based musicians. It supports projects that look at creative development through collaboration and working with new partners, or new producers. There does not have to be a recording or gig at the end: the creative process is valid enough. Support will be for applications that stimulate fresh and innovative work (in any genre), to give musicians time to research, experiment and explore. Applications can also be made to attend industry showcases or network events. A successful recipient of the Award, Dundee band The Mirror Trap have been supporting emo rock giants Placebo on their eight-date arena tour of Russia. Download Application Form at www.dundeemusiciansaward.co.uk For further information contact: dma@leisureandculturedundee.com or 01382 434111

ScreenHI are delivery partners of Honeycomb – Creative Works and have the exciting job of rolling out the programme of development within the key areas - Lochaber, Skye and Lochalsh, Argyll and Bute, Arran and Cumbrae, North Ayrshire mainland, East Ayrshire, South Ayrshire, and Dumfries & Galloway. Honeycomb, which is managed by the Special EU Programmes Body, is also working across the six southern border counties of the Republic of Ireland and in Northern Ireland. Honeycomb – Creative Works is looking to develop training and networking opportunities for individuals and groups working in film and broadcast, animation, computer games, interactive media and music technologies. As well as offering this practical support, Honeycomb is launching a brand new seed fund for projects in various stages of development aimed at individuals, freelancers and creative enterprises. ScreenHI Director Amanda Millen said: “We are very excited to be involved in this innovative new partnership which will build on our extensive network within the creative industries in the Highlands and Islands. The Honeycomb network will offer access to a ground-breaking programme that will build new skills and knowledge, and spark new connections and business opportunities both within and between digital content makers in Ireland and the western seaboard of Scotland." “If you have the idea, the drive and the enthusiasm, come and talk to us and we will see where we can take your business. We are keen to talk to everyone who has an interest in developing a career in film and broadcast, animation, game design and development, interactive media, online content for wireless, mobile and internet and music technologies, with the emphasis on making music. Perhaps you are part of an existing company or collaborating in a group. Maybe you have just left school or university and in need of a helping hand? You could be unemployed with the potential to take your idea to market. It doesn’t matter where you are in your life or your career, we’d like to meet you.”

Wayfaring Strangers: The Musical Voyage from Scotland and Ulster to Appalachia mountains by Fiona Ritchie and Doug Orr - Foreword by Dolly Parton

Order @ www.eurospanbookstore.com/wayfaring-strangers.html Throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, a steady stream of Scots migrated to Ulster and eventually onward across the Atlantic to resettle in the United States. Many of these Scots-Irish immigrants made their way into the mountains of the southern Appalachian region. They brought with them a wealth of traditional ballads and tunes from the UK and Ireland, a carrying stream that merged with sounds and songs of English, German, Welsh, African American, French and Cherokee origin. Their enduring legacy of music flows today from Appalachia back to Ireland and Scotland and around the globe. In the fascinating and beautifully-illustrated Wayfaring Strangers, due to be published in October, Fiona Ritchie and Doug Orr guide the reader on a musical voyage across oceans capturing along the way the stories of the people, the times, and the songs as they have altered and developed across the centuries. Laments and ancient ballads mourn imminent departures, lively dance tunes bring cheer on the long journey over sea, homesick and hopeful songs help keep spirits high and new sounds emerge as cherished ballads are adapted to new lifestyles. At the heart of them all is a musical tradition that continues to impact musicians today.

Incorporating interviews with modern-day songwriters whose own family stories help bring history to life, drawing on insights from key contributors to the living tradition on both sides of the Atlantic, and including a CD featuring 20 songs by musicians profiled in the book, including Dolly Parton, Dougie MacLean, Cara Dillon and Sheila Kay Adams, this enchanting and important book tells the story of migration in a way words alone never could and is a must for traditional music-lovers world-wide. Scotland-based Fiona Ritchie is the founder, producer and host of the US’s National Public Radio’s The Thistle & Shamrock, a show of music from Celtic roots. This year, she will receive an MBE from the Queen in recognition of her services to broadcasting and Scottish traditional music. Doug Orr is president emeritus of Warren Wilson College, where he founded the Swannanoa Gathering music workshops. www.facebook.com/WayfaringStrangersBook

"Songs can take us on extraordinary journeys. They respect neither border nor time, and by following them, we can chart the movement of generations of people. In Wayfaring Strangers, Fiona Ritchie and Doug Orr take a long look at this story using Scottish songs as their compass. It's a fascinating and often surprising ride." Cerys Matthews

CELTIC MUSIC RADIO IN FIRST WORLD WAR SONGS TRIBUTE Glasgow-based Celtic Music Radio is commemorating the 100th anniversary of the beginning of World War I in song. Presenter, Gordon Hotchkiss has started a six-part series of inserts on songs about the War in his weekly “Wednesday Hotchpotch” programme on Celtic Music Radio at 7.00 pm. “With over one hundred songs, poems and music, this could well be the most comprehensive coverage of music relating to the war presented on radio,” said Gordon. The series will feature a mixture of original songs recorded at the period and more contemporary songs written about the war. The first programme looked at the origins of the war, the early days, recruitment and the European Countries involved. The second explored how it turned into a truly World War featuring, amongst others, songs from Canada, Australia, New Zealand, India, South Africa, Turkey and the USA.

The fifth programme on 3 September examines major battles and opposition to the war including revolution in Russia with the final show (10 September) concentrating on some of the songs sung by the troops and the end of the war. Celtic Music Radio has offered copies of the show to other community radio stations around the UK and it is set to broadcast in Canada. Join Gordon Hotchkiss across Glasgow on 95FM and worldwide at www. celticmusicradio.net on Wednesday evenings at 7.00pm.

NEW FUNDING OF £3MILLION FOR CASHBACK FOR CREATIVITY The Scottish Music Centre received £93,000 from CashBack for Creativity in 2011/12 which was used to deliver their Hit the Road project, which went nationwide from April 2012 – March 2013, providing young musicians with their first professional touring experiences, in addition to industry workshops and training days covering many areas of the music industry. Through her Cashback for Creativity experience with the Scottish Music Centre, project MusicPlus+ Highlands based self-taught singer/songwriter, Jemma Tweedie gained access to a professional music studio with an experienced producer who helped record her debut single 'All This Fear' which is now available on iTunes. The project enabled her to develop her knowledge and understanding of specialised areas of the industry. She has been able to strengthen her skillset further having the opportunity to work with other musicians and producers of the same age and she is now working on creating new music with some fellow peers she met through the project. Jemma said: “Without Music Plus+ I would never have afforded such an opportunity being a full time university student on a tight budget. Boy Angus

Singer-Songwriter Patricia Morris is a classic storyteller in the finest Celtic Tradition. With a rare purity of tone and an impressive vocal range, her wider musical catalogue ranges from Gershwin, to Schubert, to Burns, but it is her Scottish and Irish roots she is most influenced and defined by as revealed in her songwriting. These are her latest offerings of Blues and Folk inspired songs.

After parting ways with former guitarist Joe Wyman, we took on board a new guitarist, Andrew Beveridge. The chemistry was instant and we began writing the follow up to our debut EP 'In Uniform We Divide'. Taking a more straight forward approach to song writing this time, we focused on melody and harmonies whilst still retaining elements of what sculpted the sound of 'IUWD'. Drawing on elements from bands like Oceansize, Arcane Roots and Fall of Troy, it is a further progression of our sound.

HOW TO SWIM

JAMES GILLESPIE

Fight Or Flight

Niagarama

Before I Die

The Hazy Shades debut EP, 'Fight Or Flight' is a statement of intent about rock n roll dreams and desires.

How to Swim is the brainchild of Scottish BAFTAwinning writer and composer Gregor Barclay. Although known for their expansively orchestrated recorded work and a similarly maximalist approach to the idea of band size, the group is currently operating as a lean sixpiece, comprising members of The Second Hand Marching Band, The Martial Arts and the now-defunct Mother and The Addicts. Their forthcoming sophomore full-length, Niagarama, is a concept album of sorts, exploring the loss of youth and how we process it.

James is an acoustic singer/ songwriter based in London. James brings a lot to his music - honest story telling from Folk, Pain and Passion from Blues, hooks from pop and all with an indie edge. James' live performance is engaging, honest and mesmerising. His personality is charismatic and contagious.

DEATHCATS All Hail Deathcats Album vinyl Release Date: 9 June 'All Hail Deathcats' is the debut LP from Glasgow based trio, Deathcats. Side A contains what the band consider to be their pop numbers; short and sweet pop songs packed with melodies, sing-along choruses and soaked in reverb.
