Event Partners Sought for BTBW 'Off The Record' Music Initiative Born To Be Wide is inviting organisations, venues, companies and individuals with a track record of working in youth initiatives, to partner on its latest season of Off The Record. Off The Record is a series of daytime events for young musicians and those who want to work in the industry. Aimed at 14-25 years olds, the one-day sessions feature workshops, presentations and advice on key areas of the music business including releasing tracks, management, gigging and promotion.

Supported by EmuBands and the Scottish Government’s Youth Music Initiative (YMI), administered by Creative Scotland, the seven individual events are set to take place nationwide. “We are keen to hear from prospective partners anywhere in Scotland and to tailor the content according to the priorities of local audiences,” says Born To Be Wide director, Michael Lambert.

Born To Be Wide has already confirmed the first two Off The Record events of the new season, beginning with Dundee’s Caird Hall on Saturday 3 October, hosted with support from the Dundee Festival Trust. And on Sunday 4 October sees organisers team up with Aberdeen Performing Arts and Station House Media Unit at The Lemon Tree.

Africa Live! and Zambra! Two Shows Celebrating African and Latin Music at the Fringe Following sold out shows in 2014 and responding to audience comments that their only complaint was that there was no room to dance in the packed New Town Theatre, AFRICA LIVE! is back in 2015, in a brand new venue, with lots of space to sit and listen or get up and shake your thing. It’s joined by ZAMBRA! – which will bring together some of the best Latin American and Spanish musicians and dancers at the Fringe. Africa Live! is a whistle-stop tour of some of the best African music at the Edinburgh Fringe, with a different lineup of special guests each night. Spinetingling vocals, exuberant Afrobeats, mbalax, jiti rhythms and much more, drawn from round the Fringe and round the world. The remaining Africa Live! is headlined by Rise Kagona (Zimbabwe), Rise Kagona original member of the legendary Bhundu Boys, and his Jit Jive Band, on 21 August. Rise Kagona is a guitar hero to many on two continents! The BBC's Andy Kershaw cites him as having changed his life, and John Peel famously broke down in tears the first time he saw The Bhundu Boys perform live. In Zimbabwe, Rise transferred traditional Jiti rhythms to guitar, and his band toured the world extensively in the 1980s and 1990s. He is now based in Edinburgh and it’s a pleasure and honour to include
him in Africa Live! Zambra! follows the same pattern as Africa Live! with a headline act (The Boteco Trio) from Scotland that has its roots elsewhere, combined with several guest acts drawn from around the Fringe. The Boteco Trio is a multi-talented group of musicians whose vast Brazilian repertoire draws from samba, bossa nova, baião, chôro, and MPB, led by the massively talented and engaging Mario Caribé on vocals, guitar, cavaco & bass. Originally from Sao Paulo, Brazil, Mario moved to Scotland to study, and is now the go-to double bass player in Scotland for a huge number of musicians including Tommy Smith, Carole Kidd, Bobby Watson, Joe Locke, Valery Ponomarev and Fringe favourite Camille O’Sullivan. Brian Molley (saxes, clarinet & flute) and Stuart Brown (drums & percussion) are also highly respected musicians in their own right, who have worked in London’s West End, on Broadway, with David Byrne and Tom Jones, to pick just a few highlights. Together they are a formidable force of rhythm. Zambra! means party – and that’s what we intend to do! Audience dancing is very much encouraged. Both Africa Live! and Zambra! can be found in the gorgeous setting of new Fringe venue Central Hall (run by the Just Festival), which has ample space to accommodate both those who want to sit and listen and those who get swept up by the rhythms and want to dance. There will 3 or 4 guest slots, in addition to the headline each night – still to be discovered African and Latin American/Spanish gems from around the Fringe.

'Bring In The Spirit' to highlight rural foodbanks during September tour Four of Scotland's best traditional singers and musicians, Rod Paterson, Kirsten Easdale, Gregor Lowrey and Marc Duff, collectively known as BRING IN THE SPIRIT, are touring in the North and West of Scotland this September. The name of the band comes from a line in Robert Burns poem A Grace After Dinner, “Let Meg now take away the flesh and Jock bring in the spirit”. Widely recognised as the foremost male traditional singer in Scotland, Rod Paterson has been involved with stage productions, including The Ship and The Big Picnic, and has featured on many radio and TV productions, including The Transatlantic Sessions. He was a founder member of one of Scotlandʼ s most influential and respected traditional bands, Jock Tamson's Bairnsʼ and alongside his many recordings including those with Jock Tamson's Bairns and The Easy Club, Rod has made 3 solo albums for Greentrax.

Oregon's 'Betty & The Boy' head for Scotland One of the most interesting bands on the US roots music circuit, BETTY & THE BOY, from Eugene, Oregon, is all set to arrive in the UK for a touring debut here, and the schedule includes a string of Scottish dates. With two acclaimed albums now released on this side of the Atlantic, the remarkable, tough-to-pigeonhole five-piece, has made a huge impact. On their home turf, the same thing has been happening after they carried off the “Best Band” title in their home State. This will be the American group’s first and long-awaited UK & Ireland tour, and many are excited to catch the ‘live’ show after reviewers began to shower them with praise. FolkRadioUK was first to get excited, Simon Holland saying: “Betty And The Boy emerge like a precious treasure that has somehow gained in lustre and significance, something very special indeed.” told listeners it was “lovely stuff!” Since then, the momentum has been sustained as they gathered more and more exposure. “Incredibly talented, highly original and pretty much unique,” exclaimed Mike Morrison at AmericanRootsUK, while top writer Jeremy Searle told readers of Maverick magazine the latest album was “excellent”.

YouTube sensation Jon Cozart brings his show to Edinburgh Texan YouTube sensation JON COZART has hit three million subscribers to his channel whilst wowing audiences at his Edinburgh Fringe show. Dundee based producer, Paul Smith of Fringe with Benefits Productions saw Jon’s videos online and invited him, through Twitter, to do a one-man show. The show features the best of Jon’s hits including new material written especially for his Edinburgh outing.
"Whilst I’ve been performing here in Scotland, I have racked up more subscribers to my channel, allowing me to hit this milestone. I am beyond thrilled!" said Jon.

Jane Stanley is an Australian-born composer based in Glasgow. Her music has been performed by the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, Tanglewood Brass Ensemble, Continuum Sax, Duo Vertigo, Halcyon, Claire Edwardes, Niels Meliefste, and Simon Smith.

The following year she was commissioned to compose Palimpsest for the Tanglewood Brass Ensemble and during the same summer she was a fellow at the Aspen Music Festival and School. Upcoming commissions include works for Ruth Morley and Rhian Macleod (flute and marimba), and Robin Michael and Huw Watkins (cello and piano).
Stanley is a recipient of the Sydney Moss Scholarship, an Australian Postgraduate Award, the Albert Travelling Scholarship, the Tempe Mann Travelling Scholarship as well as grants In 2004-5 Stanley was a Visiting Fellow at from Ars Musica Australis and the Ian Potter Harvard University, and in 2006 she taught at Cultural Trust. In 1997 she received the Sarah MIT and Northeastern University. The Pleasance Sessions return this autumn Edinburgh's 'The Pleasance Sessions 2015' builds on last year’s success with a refined line-up spanning 3 nights from the 9 to 11 October. Clype is the muchanticipated self-titled debut album from one of Scotland’s newest and most dynamic duos. Hailing from the North East, Clype is a stripped-back experiment in fusing sounds and styles from around the globe. The musicians borrow from Scottish folk traditions as well as from the rhythms of Latin America and harmonic ideas of jazz to create a new, inimitable sound.

This song flits between feels and time signatures recalling the rhythmic traditions of AfroThe mood of the album is established in the Colombia while further exploring Scottish folk introduction of the first song “The Brush to Paint sensibilities. Us All”; a song which was inspired by the harmonic ideas of Bill Evans, the melodic “Now My Home” features the unmistakable low heritage of Scottish folk music and the academic whistle of Ross Ainslie. The weaving melody is ideas of Edward Said. complimented by an exciting whistle solo which lifts the track to its peak before settling back into Other tracks such as “Down With May” more the tasteful piano groove. clearly highlight Clype’s interest in Latin The beautiful voice of guest singer-songwriter Jenny Sturgeon can be heard in her self-penned track “Fair Drawin’ In”. Its soaring melody is underpinned by a repetitive pedal in the piano and shruti box giving the song a distinctive and lush harmonic bed upon which to dance. Jenny also co-writes and sings on the reflective “Red Tide”. ‘I urge you to give a listen to Clype. This is music firmly rooted in the North East of Scotland, but which pulls in influences from all over the world. Simon Gall and Jonny Hardie create music which is eclectic, original, accomplished and challenging.’
The album is deep and mature and is a testimony to the creativity of the musicians. It was born out of a profound love for the folk music of the world and has masterfully pulled some of them together to create a vibrant, enduring and inspiring album.
The duo, which comprises pianist and singersongwriter Simon Gall of Salsa Celtica and Old Blind Dogs fiddler Jonny Hardie, has produced an exciting and challenging album filled with freshsounding melody lines, thought-provoking lyrics and elegant arrangements which has garnered prestigious support. Foxbeef are a four piece Scottish band who play hard-edged rock with grungy undertones. Their influences range from Foo Fighters to Alice in Chains but they have developed their own unique sound since forming in late 2010. Foxbeef are: Brian Diamond – Lead Vocals/ Guitar (Rep of Ireland) Daryl Robertson – Lead Guitar/ Backing vocals (Fife) Michael 'Mole' Carey – Bass/ Backing vocals (Glasgow) Ross Cunningham – Drums/ Backing Vocals (Aberdeen) Foxbeef were formed back in October 2010, when the members met at University of Abertay Dundee while studying Creative Sound Production. The members became quick friends and decided to jam some original music shortly
after. Foxbeef played their first gig in January 2011 in PJ Malloys Dunfermline. Shortly after their energetic and successful début in Fife, Foxbeef started playing other venues in Aberdeen, Glasgow and of course Dundee. In 2012, the band entered ‘Live and Unsigned’, a battle of the bands style competition which saw them progress through two preliminary rounds to reach the nationwide final at The O2 Arena in London. The judges were particularly impressed with lead singer Brian’s vocal capabilities and spoke very highly of the band. "Dundee Hard Rock at its Best!" (T. Clark, The Third Ticket) Since then the band has been working on material for their début album Shattered Echoes; fine tuning their craft with various gigs around Scotland. Foxbeef released their début album Shattered Echoes on the 27 June, 2015. Their first stop was recording drums at TPot Studios in Kinross with Robin Wynn Evans whose credits The Manic Street Preachers & The View. The band took on the responsibility to record and produce the rest of the album themselves. Paul Mellon (Guitars): This is our second single of our debut EP which we aim to release this autumn. In Praha is a song about 2 people falling in love in Prague. The main riff was inspired by Here Comes Your Man by Pixies and the solo is my own very poor imitation of / homage to Nels Cline's solo in Impossible Germany by Wilco. Some have called it catchy.

July Moon is the second studio album from singersongwriter Alistair Ogilvy - a strong collection of selfpenned material released on his own label and recorded at CHEM19 studios. Alistair was determined to push some genre boundaries while focusing on varying themes of love and loss, poetry and nostalgia. Louis Abbott from Admiral Fallow produced the album and it also features Karen Mathieson from Capercaillie on guest vocals. This new release is sure to gain him new admirers and open up exciting opportunities.
Electric guitarist, re-imagining jazz, folk, rock and choral music. Born in London, Steve Garrett has lived and traveled across the UK, Antartica, Canada and California, and now calls Scotland home. His music springs from a lifetime of influences from diverse sources and performances. Even Song include songs of loss, longing, inspiration by landscape, resolution and hope. The reflective mood mirrors the fading light at the end of the day. Composers range from the 16th Century through folk and the 1980s to contemporary European jazz, with some original compositions. Arrangements bring out the full resonance of the guitar, sometimes backed by loops recorded in real time.
It is never easy for a son to follow in the footsteps of a famous father, so Iain Jnr chose not to. He gave up the world of solo piping and went on his own musical journey. But what he was taught in his formative years is deep within him and this album is a definite attempt at some kind of filtering of the music of his hinterland. There is also a story present, sometimes a rocky one, of a father and son's relationship formed through a rich tradition and an art form that is deeply important to their culture and to both of them personally. There is a mixture of all these elements in this album and Iain Morrison is an artist who is following his own path, wherever that may take him.

Glasgow sextet James Edwyn & The Borrowed Band were formed in 2013 and soon established a cult following that set up a ripple effect carrying their name far and wide. Their music is a mix of alt country and folky rock roots orientated Americana. They showcased at the 2014 Celtic Connections and realised they had enough material to start putting their debut album 'The Tower' together. Tied To The Moon was conceived in an apartment above a pottery studio deep in the sticks of Nova Scotia where Rachel had four days of complete stillness with no means to communicate with the outside world - during silent afternoons of coffee and pistachios, Rachel would sit, in total solitude; writing; reading; playing music. In the space of these four days she unintentionally wrote six songs - four that would later become the core of Tied To The Moon: ‘Tractor’, ‘This Love’, ‘Banks Are Broken’ and ‘Old Lady's Lament’.

SEPTEMBER Nairn Book and Arts Festival Nairn 1-6 September
Ayrshire 4-6 September Since it was launched in 2010 Live@Troon has been providing a great September weekend of live entertainment for residents of, and visitors to, the Ayrshire coastal town. Over the first five years the weekend has brought some great musical and comedic talent to Troon with sell out gigs for acts such as The Wanted, Red Hot Chilli Pipers, The Saw Doctors, The Colour Ham and Eddi Reader.
