16-25? Do you want to be a RSNO Young Ambassador? Since 2013, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra (RSNO) has run a Young Ambassadors programme with 20 - 30 participants each year from all over Scotland: the Western Isles to Dumfries and Galloway, the Scottish Borders to Aberdeenshire. This year the RSNO is opening up 'Young Ambassadors' to a wider age range from 16 - 25 years old. Ambassadors attend RSNO concerts for free, meet the musicians and conductors and operate as a youth advisory board for the RSNO, feeding into the main RSNO Board.

RSNO Young Ambassadors :: www.rsno.org.uk/engage/young-ambassadors/

RSNO 'Young Ambassadors' will be expected to highlight opportunities for young people in their local area through their school, college or university and within their community. In return 'Young Ambassadors' will receive free tickets for RSNO concerts, work experience opportunities and will play a part in influencing the RSNO’s wider engagement strategy. Forums are held in Glasgow throughout the season where all ambassadors will get together to share their recent experiences, work alongside the RSNO team and debate the direction of youth engagement within classical music. All forums will be followed by 'Young Ambassadors' attending an RSNO season performance. The deadline for applications is 15 September and to apply for Young Ambassadors in the 16:17 season go to this site to download a form www.rsno.org.uk/engage/young-ambassadors/

Dean Owens & The Celtabilly Allstars

will be Settin’ The Woods On Fire with the songs of Hank Williams at Edinburgh Fringe

Dean Owens is one of Scotland’s best loved troubadours and Settin’ the Woods on Fire is his tribute to one of his favourite singer songwriters, Hank Williams aka the Hillbilly Shakespeare. Settin’ the Woods on Fire started in Shetland in March when Owens was asked to tune up his “Hank howl” and curate and lead a tribute show to Hank Williams. The sell-out success of those shows led to an invitation from the prestigious Southern Fried Festival and Edinburgh's Queen’s Hall for Dean to devise a smaller version which could travel south. Settin’ the Woods on Fire (Songs of Hank Williams) is now due to hit the Queen's Hall as part of the Edinburgh Fringe, and the special guests are two of Shetland’s finest – singer songwriter Sheila Henderson (who has supported the likes of Steve Earle and Albert Lee) and fiddler Bryan Gear (a student of the late great Willie Hunter and described by Aly Bain as 'one of Shetland's finest young fiddle players').

He was the subject of a recent Hollywood biopic starring Tom Hiddleston and Elizabeth Olsen (which coincidentally featured Michael Rinne (who also played on Dean’s most recent album, the acclaimed Nashville-recorded Into the Sea) on bass).

The Celtabilly Allstars are ace double bassist Kevin McGuire and lap steel guitar maestro Stuart Nisbet - two of Scotland’s best honky tonk musicians (and long term collaborators of Dean’s from his days with acclaimed Scottish country band The Felsons). The three have recently also recorded a new album, titled Setting the Woods on Fire (Songs I Learned From Hank), a limited edition of which will be available after the shows. Already out is Spellweaving, featuring the earliest-known Scottish bagpipe music. Dr Till contributed to the exhibition, but his main EMAP role is to co-produce a sequence of five recordings – most of them made at the University of Huddersfield. Dr Till produced John Kenny’s CD in the EMAP series. Titled Dragon Voices, it includes a considerable amount of multi-tracking and was made at the University of Huddersfield, with Dr Till at the studio controls. It is due for release later in the year. Also completed is Ice and Longboats, which recreates ancient Scandinavian music and includes bone flutes and a Bronze Age horn called the Lur. Ice and Longboats was recorded in a church in southern Sweden by Dr Till and Paul Baxter, founder of Delphian records. Then it was back to the University of Huddersfield for the fourth EMAP recording, titled Cave Songs. This features recreations of Palaeolithic bone flutes – including a replica of a 42,000-yearold example that is the world’s oldest known instrument – played by Anna Friederike Potengowski – accompanied by Georg Wagner on a range of percussion that includes the sound of stones dropping in wa-

ter. Although Cave Songs was made at the University’s studios, Dr Till simulated the actual reverberation of the caves in France and Germany where the original bone flutes were found. “I recorded the acoustics of the caves and applied that to the recordings. It makes a huge difference,” he said. The final recording in the sequence will consist of music and instruments of ancient Rome and Greece. Also to be made at the University of Huddersfield, it will feature Stefan Hagel – of the Austrian Academy of Sciences – playing a reed pipe known as the aulos or tibia. There will also be stringed instruments from the ancient world and a recreation of water-powered organ known to have been heard in the Roman Arena. High-quality photographs for Dragon Voices and the subsequent CDs have been provided by University of Huddersfield lecturer David Lake. They includes a stunning image of the carnyx that is used as the emblem for the EMAP exhibition in Ystad.

STILLHOUND :: album :: 'Bury Everything' release date - 23 September @ http://stillhound.co.uk/

‘Bury Everything’ is the upcoming debut album from Edinburgh based trio Stillhound, consisting of Fergus Cook, Laurie CorlettDonald and Dave Lloyd.

Taking inspiration from art, geography and the far flung soundscapes of their homeland, they developed their sound in various mountain lodges, creating an avant-pop record with glacial electronics and packed with unashamed synth pop moments. Laced with twinkling piano chords and gentle guitar riffs, ‘Bury Everything' is set for release on 23rd September via Lost Oscillation Records.

Additional production and mixing was undertaken by Gareth Jones (Depeche Mode, Interpol, Grizzly Bear) and mastering was undertaken by Alex Wharton at Abbey Road. First single ‘Seethe Unseen’ emerged for the dark side of Stillhound, blending atmospheric pop with emotive electronica, drawing influences from multiple facets of music and blending it into an original form. Follow up ’Think This Way’ explored a brighter and lively climate, whilst still incorporating darker hues to great effect. Upcoming single and album opener ‘Spring Conscious’ is a vast and soaring pop track with Foals-esque guitar intricacies and a towering chorus that wouldn’t sound out of place on Friendly Fires’ debut album. Stillhound's live set is ready and with an arsenal of new tracks up their sleeve, they look ready to pick up the electronic-pop mantle and make 2016 their own.

Album - cd - Release Date: Out Now This CD is the culmination of a much earlier celebration, in music and song, of ‘The Wallace’ in 2005, by way of a commission from Alasdair Campbell who was then with The Tolbooth Music and Arts venue in Stirling. This was followed by another commission by Carolyn Paterson in 2014 to celebrate another icon of history of whom we know a good bit more than the former, Robert de Brus of Norman French stock, the 14th C warlord who became King, regaining Scotland’s place as an Independent nation. This orchestrated progression of music ranges from an arrangement of a classic traditional pibroch theme, in its most appropriate animated and rhythmic presentation, to specially composed and arranged pieces. Melodies are presented on a range of pipes in several different keys, overlaid and blended with percussion, clarsach, cello, soprano saxophone, violin, whistle and vocals. Human Condition

Cold Weather Music

B-Sides

This is Doghouse Roses' guitarist Paul Tasker's first solo album. An all instrumental album peformed on fingerstyle guitar and clawhammer banjo with flute, flatpicked guitar, cello, pedal steel guitar and percussion. The 10 tracks are musical responses to both real life and imagined events and largely have a folk or old time Americana feel, but with 2 guitar duets adding a jazz tinge.

David Altair has just released his 6th album entitled ‘B-Sides’. This is some work that was previously never released and is quite rare. The album has quite a psychedelic feel to it especially ‘we can’t stop now (the Wall)’. The album flows into a journey of ambient sounds and experimentation.

Yardbird

Two Years Long

Album cd Release Date: Out Now

EP cd / download Release Date: 28 February

The Rising Souls are a thumping blue eyed soul band from central Scotland. They have been met with universal praise throughout the UK, Europe and more recently NYC. Their second album 'Yardbird' is a mesmerising blend of country, blues and soul. Frontman Dave Archibald displays a powerhouse vocal reminiscent of Frankie Miller and Otis Redding. Supporting Dave are Roy 'Kelso' Laing on bass and Tom Reed on percussion.

Amy Rayner is a singer songwriter from St. Andrews, Scotland, who's relatable and honest lyrics blend amicably with her memorable, soaring melodies. Her new EP 'Two Years Long' is a very personal work that centres around the three stages of a relationship, beginning, middle and end, and features a fusion of genres from folk and pop to country and blues.

CHARLOTTE HATHAWAY & MIKE VASS (featuring Mairi Campbell) The Dead Stations

Album - cd / download - Release Date: 11 March “The whole forest has this feeling of going on forever. And if you lose track of the train line then you’re lost..." A story told through original music and audio drama featuring new songs by Mike Vass performed by haunting vocalist Mairi Campbell. Dead Stations are out of use platforms on a remote train line through the forested mountains. It’s a story designed to be listened to: a mystery about loneliness and the mind, inspired by a train ride through Brazil’s Atlantic Rainforest and abstract ideas about Little Red Riding Hood.
