THE WEE GOVAN PIPERS They’re ten years old. They're Scottish, Chinese and Nigerian. They can reduce a grown policeman to tears and might just be the future of Scotland’s urban bagpipes.

The Wee Govan Pipers with the Red Hot Chilli Pipers and tutor Iain Watson

A new hour long BBC ALBA documentary, ‘The Wee Govan Pipers / Pìobairean Beaga Bhaile Ghobhainn’ charts the first 18 months of the new Govan Schools Pipe Band. Along the way the kids meet legendary piper Rona Lightfoot and bag-rockers the Red Hot Chili Pipers. The heart-warming documentary which offers a sense of humour and buckets full of charm, is narrated by Ewen Henderson of the band Mànran who also wrote the original music for the film. The entertaining adventures of five Govan children, Damilola Fadun (Nigerian), Brenda Sheng (Chinese), and Scots Thomas Rankine, David Rice and Scott McCormick, kicks off with their first foray into competitive piping at the world’s largest Schools Pipe Band Championships. Retired policeman Iain Watson from the famed Greater Glasgow Police Pipe Band (13 times winners of the World Pipe Band Championships), is one of the tutors of the new Govan Schools Pipe Band and is unashamed that the children make him cry as well as laugh.

Tis the Season (almost) for Celtic Connections With just a few weeks to go before the world’s largest annual winter festival of folk, traditional and world music opens, the lineup for Celtic Connections 2016 continues to grow.

Eddi Reader, Barbara Dickson, Kris Drever and O’Hooley & Tidow join the line-up of leading UK and Irish folk artists performing the live premiere of 'The Ballads of Child Migration' in the main auditorium of Glasgow Royal Concert Hall on Tuesday 19 January. John McCusker, Jez Lowe, Boo Hewerdine, Chris While and Julie Matthews are among the artists previously confirmed. Originally commissioned as an album of new music to accompany a current V & A exhibition, the concert commemorates the historical enforced migration of unaccompanied children from Britain. Eska, whose self-titled debut album was nominated for the Mercury Prize Album of the Year 2015, has been added to the bill at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall concert on Friday 22 January headlined by world music superstar Baaba Maal. Zimbabwe-born, London-raised musician and songwriter Eska has worked with artists including Grace Jones and Courtney Pine while building her solo career. Following James Robertson’s reimagining of Joni Mitchell’s 1976 album Hejira, the second half of the PILGRIMER concert on Saturday 16 January in the main auditorium of Glasgow Royal Concert Hall will feature a glittering cast of musicians performing Joni Mitchell’s greatest hits. Artists include Karine Polwart, Rod Paterson, SAY award winner Kathryn Joseph, Annie Grace and Julie Fowlis. PILGRIMER’s musical directors are Karine and Steven Polwart with specially commissioned string arrangements from award winning composer Pippa Murphy. In total 2,500 musicians from around the world will gather in Glasgow for 18 days of concerts, ceilidhs, talks, art exhibitions, workshops, free events, late night sessions and a host of special

First four acts announced for 34th Orkney Folk Festival

Liz Carroll, The Unthanks, Frigg and Julie Fowlis heading to the isles in 2016

With just over five months to go until the 34th Orkney Folk Festival, the event’s organisers have this week announced four of the artistes scheduled to appear at the late May event. World-renowned, Grammy-nominated Irish-American fiddler Liz Carroll; Mercury-nominated Tyneside vocal sister-act The Unthanks; the leading act on the Nordic fiddle scene, Finland’s finest Frigg; and the voice of Disney Pixar’s Brave, Gaelic songstress Julie Fowlis, are all making their way to Orkney over 26-29 May.

The Undisputed King of Caledonian Cajun Swing is back! by Rob Ellen

When The Borders raised musical Reiver Champion Doug Veitch's pioneering cacophonies of music burst onto the unsuspecting public and generally contrived early 80’s pop scene there was obviously a sea change needing to happen. Doug was determine to do it using his and that of his friends full blown musicality.

DiscAfriqu Records and brought African trail blazers The Bhundu Boys here for the first time, the rest is now quite literally musical history. After a hiatus of some thirty years Champion Doug Veitch made a “triumphant and joyous” comeback at a sell out 100 Club in London in February this year. After the success of the 100 Club, Doug made the decision to continue – the resulting CD contains three of his classic tracks reworked and the first new material “The King” in thirty years. His standing among his peers even after 30 years, is further emphasised by the musicians now playing with him. These include; Martin Bell, (Fiddle). Martin was a member of The Wonderstuff and The Albion Band. He has also performed with Boy George and was an original member of Doug’s band. Chris Hall, (Accordion). Chris has performed with many Louisiana Cajun artists and tours regularly throughout Europe in his own right. Much in demand as a player, he has been called upon in recent years by Paul MacCartney, Bill Wyman and Kate Bush. Chris was also a member of Doug’s original band.

Later he and fellow pioneer the late great BBC Radio London Dee Jay Charlie Gillet would together contrive the catch all phrase “World Music” which put a handle on the tsunami that would as a result break over the music business and change everyone in the Louis Vause, (Piano/Organ). Deborah Welsh Commercial Media Sometimes it’s hard to know where to start when getting the word out on a new album or a tour or even a high profile festival or concert. Without a good pr and marketing campaign, people simply won’t know about your event or your latest recording. For years I’ve sung traditional songs of emigration, thinking them some of the most powerful ballads I’ve ever come across. These songs – whether Scottish, Irish or English – tell the tales of times when life was so hard people were forced to leave their homes and families in search of a better place, a tolerable place.

Very often the protagonist mourns the separation from the land of her birth and longs one day to return. The songs invariably deal with the subject of emigration with a deep sympathy and compassion.

Album cd / download Release Date: Out Now

This stunning reworking for jazz octet of Igor Stravinsky's masterwork retains all of the themes and most of the exquisite orchestration of the original composition. Improvisational sections appear organically out of Stravinsky's score, allowing band members to be featured as individual soloists as the piece unfolds. With personnel drawn from Scotland, England and Germany, this international group is a world-class ensemble, completely at ease with each other and this incredibly complex music.

Open Airs is a musical log book of travels in Norway, Ireland and Scotland. In 2011, Norwegian musician and composer Kyrre Slind quite his job, bought a banjo and hit the road on a Vespa 125 scooter, heading for Ireland. Four years later - rich in new experiences - he releases his first solo album, recorded in Scotland and Norway. The melodies describe landscapes, impressions and personalities encountered when travelling the great north and its islands.

Shattered Echoes

Glasgow Jazz singer Eddie Toal has released a CD as a tribute to his wife Irene who always wanted him to make a recording. Sadly, Irene will never hear it. She died from Breast Cancer four years ago aged just 48. Irene’s dying wish was to help other patients at the Beatson Cancer Centre where she was treated. So Eddie (66) is donating all the proceeds from his recording to the Beatson Cancer Charity and hopes to raise thousands of pounds. “It’s not exactly the Taj Mahal but it’s the best I can do to remember her” says Eddie, an exrailwayman and semi-professional singer. “Irene used to nag me about making a recording of old songs that we both loved but I just never got around to it. Well, now I have and it’s for a great cause.”

‘Newly minted psychedelic’ band from Glasgow have their debut self-titled EP released on infamous student run record label Electric Honey. Brothers Kris and Pete have encapsulated all that is great about psychedelic, garage, rock and pop music into this record. A perfectly balanced EP.

Foxbeef: Powerful, melodic, hard rock with grunge sensibilities. Foxbeef released their début album Shattered Echoes on the 27 June, 2015. The drums were recorded at TPot Studios in Kinross with Robin Wynn Evans, whose credits include The Manic Street Preachers & The View. The band took on the responsibility to record and produce the rest of the album themselves, working as hard as they could over the course of a year to get the album to a place that reflected the bands personality and energy.

The album uses a variety of influences, whilst also maintaining a lyrical and stylistic thread throughout. ALISTAIR OGILVY

STEVE GARRETT

In Praha

July Moon

Even Song

Paul Mellon (Guitars): This is our second single of our debut EP which we aim to release this autumn. In Praha is a song about 2 people falling in love in Prague. The main riff was inspired by Here Comes Your Man by Pixies and the solo is my own very poor imitation of / homage to Nels Cline's solo in Impossible Germany by Wilco. Some have called it catchy.

July Moon is the second studio album from singersongwriter Alistair Ogilvy - a strong collection of selfpenned material released on his own label and recorded at CHEM19 studios. Alistair was determined to push some genre boundaries while focusing on varying themes of love and loss, poetry and nostalgia. Louis Abbott from Admiral Fallow produced the album and it also features Karen Mathieson from Capercaillie on guest vocals. This new release is sure to gain him new admirers and open up exciting opportunities.

Electric guitarist, re-imagining jazz, folk, rock and choral music. Born in London, Steve Garrett has lived and traveled across the UK, Antartica, Canada and California, and now calls Scotland home. His music springs from a lifetime of influences from diverse sources and performances. Even Song include songs of loss, longing, inspiration by landscape, resolution and hope. The reflective mood mirrors the fading light at the end of the day. Composers range from the 16th Century through folk and the 1980s to contemporary European jazz, with some original compositions. Arrangements bring out the full resonance of the guitar, sometimes backed by loops recorded in real time.

TIM DALLING

EAS

Eve's Bonie Squad

Album cd / download / vinyl? Release Date: 31 July It is never easy for a son to follow in the footsteps of a famous father, so Iain Jnr chose not to. He gave up the world of solo piping and went on his own musical journey. But what he was taught in his formative years is deep within him and this album is a definite attempt at some kind of filtering of the music of his hinterland. There is also a story present, sometimes a rocky one, of a father and son's relationship formed through a rich tradition and an art form that is deeply important to their culture and to both of them personally. There is a mixture of all these elements in this album and Iain Morrison is an artist who is following his own path, wherever that may take him.

RACHEL SERMANNI

Homecoming

Amateurs

Tied to the Moon

The debut album from Edinburgh’s orchestral noise-pop collective, 'Amateurs’ is a spectacular amalgamation of live and programmable instrumentation that creates an overwhelmingly powerful sound. “Pure, simplistic and beautiful” - Artrocker "It’s the kind of music that makes me want to type all day in an attempt to describe its beauty” - The 405 “Urvanovic have managed to create a sound that is both complex and enchanting” The Vinyl District

Tied To The Moon was conceived in an apartment above a pottery studio deep in the sticks of Nova Scotia where Rachel had four days of complete stillness with no means to communicate with the outside world - during silent afternoons of coffee and pistachios, Rachel would sit, in total solitude; writing; reading; playing music. In the space of these four days she unintentionally wrote six songs - four that would later become the core of Tied To The Moon: ‘Tractor’, ‘This Love’, ‘Banks Are Broken’ and ‘Old Lady's Lament’.
