World's First Music Tourist Summit Hailed A Success By Delegates Participants in the world’s first music and tourism summit have hailed the event a success, with 82% stating they are “very likely" or “likely” to do business with the other sector, as a result of attending. The event, which was hosted in Glasgow on 1819 November, combined presentations and workshops with a series of activities including a civic reception, a Glengoyne whisky tasting and a tour taking in several key venues. Some 60 music and tourism professionals took part in the Music Tourist Summit over the two days, with delegates from France, Germany, Norway and Sweden joining attendees from Scotland and the rest of the UK. “The feedback from participants has been extremely positive and provides a solid foundation for developing Music Tourist’s activities,” says founder Olaf Furniss, who is building a global music tourism network and has established a consultancy to provide advice to companies and organisations, looking to capitalise on the opportunities. “Our next step is to seek partners with a view to hosting the Music Tourist Summit in 2017, as well as to collaborate on other events and initiatives. The conference, hosted on the first day, included presentations by Icelandair, Full Metal Cruise, UK Music, Hamburg Marketing, Nordic Choice Hotels, the Found In Music consultancy and Bonfest. Delegates also took part in workshops and heard talks on promoting destinations through streaming music events and creating festival packages to Cuba.

Teemed with jovial anecdotes, modern and traditional Christmas music and exquisite musicianship that will tug at ones heartstrings, it is indeed “the perfect way to fill up your festive fuel tank” The Scotsman. Phil will be joined by some of the finest musicians on the Scottish folk scene including: Eddi Reader, Karen Matheson, John McCusker, Kris Drever, Ian Carr and Kevin McGuire along with a special guest Brass Band. Swing into the Holiday Season “A Christmas Festival of Jazz”

featuring The Scottish National Jazz Orchestra and The Tommy Smith Youth Jazz Orchestra

If there is one concert event that is guaranteed to bring authentic Christmas cheer then it’s the sound of swinging jazz. In a special double bill in Edinburgh on 16 December and Glasgow the following day,

featuring both the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra (SNJO) and the Tommy Smith Youth Jazz Orchestra (TSYJO), these concerts will be footwarming programmes of stomping jazz and enduring seasonal favourites.

Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite appears in many forms at this time of year. Anyone looking for something different should look no further than the SNJO playing Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn’s vivid and vibrant re-imagining of the Nutcracker Suite. Arrangements do not come any brighter or bolder than this jazz version by Ellington and Strayhorn: liberated music and different arrangements yet retaining all the romanticism and mystical charm of the composer’s original ideas. The SNJO will enjoy decking the halls with dazzling orchestral brass decorated with musical adornments that they are uniquely their own. The family-friendly fun will also feature the TSYJO bringing traditional touches to a distinctly Cool Yule that captures perfectly the optimistic spirit of the festive season. The young orchestra features the latest assemblage of the finest youth jazz talent to have emerged in recent years, and they prove that jazz from Scotland is the gift that keeps on giving. Christmas is, of course, a time for wonderful surprises and it’s in the nature of both the SNJO and the character of jazz that they often come wrapped up in delightful improvisation and inventive spontaneity.

Tommy Smith and the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra

So, if you love the Nutcracker, the

Peanuts Gang, or you can’t wait for Santa to hurry down the chimney, then this is the show for you. Suitable for all the family, come and join the SNJO and the TSYJO for a ding-dong celebration in A Christmas Festival of Jazz. Kim Edgar said: “Witness The Wonder celebrates midwinter, and the fact that even in the darkest times, together we can gather strength and help each other, so it seemed to me a really positive message that was ideal for performance by The BIG Project Youth Choir.” Project Director Sascha Macleod commented: “It’s fantastic to see the choir fundraising in support of The BIG Project - our members have already raised money for Children In Need this year, through discos and other special events, and it’s great to see them using their musical skills to raise awareness of our project and to support us in our continued work here in Broomhouse.” The charity single launch comes at the start of a new project called BIG Voices, funded by Creative Scotland’s Youth Music Initiative. As part of the project, they will work in partnership with BIG Project Youth Theatre to put on a two night production of The Wizard Of Oz in June 2017. The single can be purchased on iTunes now - simply type in “Witness The Wonder” to find it! Or visit www.cdbaby.com/cd/thebigprojectyouthchoir

"It's CHRISTMAS!!!" - a few ideas below for the ideal present which also supports musicians

THE KATET :: album :: 'Guillotine' release date - out now @ https://thekatet.bandcamp.com/

"Imagine a classical conductor who leaves his score, baton and concert hall for a sweaty, underground funk dungeon".

This is, essentially, how Mike Kearney founded The Katet. They are Edinburgh's 7-piece soulfunk monster playing dance music for the thinking man. Its Brahms with brass! Rachmaninov if you're 'man enough'! Funky and soulful but with a heavy basting of intricate and sublime composition.

The new album, 'Guillotine', is all the proof anyone could need. In addition to the core of The Katet, it hosts an array of special guests; from a string sextet to fivepiece horns, 2 drummers, 2 bassists, 2 guitarists, 2 percussionists and vocals - 19 musicians in all. The Katet wasn't always “something of a funk colossus”. The band's inception was in 2007 when singer-songwriter Mike Kearney put together a trio to play a mixture of Tom Waits, Steely Dan and Stevie Wonder influenced originals. After acquiring a much sought after late-night residency at Edinburgh's multiple award-winning music venue, The Jazz Bar, a change began to take place. 8 years, 400 gigs, 800 hours of music and roughly 6,000 songs later, the band has completely transformed. It still boasts the classic funk line-up of drums, bass, electric guitar, keyboards and vocals but with added three-piece horn section at the fore. The songs, once simple groove-based funk ditties, have evolved into larger than life 'composed' epics whilst remaining grounded in a pop-song format. Kearney's philosophical lyrics on social culture, religion and politics remain at the centre of each piece. The time has come, and The Katet have outgrown the house. Bursting at the seams, its time to bring what they have learnt to the masses. Nothing more can they learn from their much-loved, intimate shows in the basement of the capital's funkiest speak-easy. Now, fullygrown, The Katet are leaving the nest! www.thekatet.co.uk www.facebook.com/thekatetband https://twitter.com/thekatetband

The Poets and the Beats from Musician / producer Paul Armour (ex Seminal Glasgow Surf Pop Band “The Cuban Heels") “The album is very much a beat combo sound. Punchy with grooves using classic retro instruments: Rhodes Wurlitzer & Hammond, vintage amps and guitars. The feel is a mix of styles, melodic & rhythmic. Lyrically quirky with themes of hope and renewal. A recent review from Rock Fm. Scotland described the sound as “Weller-ish” but more refined! It’s all in the ear of the beholder. Born and brought up in Inverness, Liza has been involved in folk music for many years. Although classically trained in piano, her family background of a big Glasgow-Irish clan of musicians and singers on her father's side, and the Gaelic song tradition of her mother's Isle of Lewis heritage, inevitably meant a strong pull towards the folk scene. On her first solo album of original songs and tunes, Fine 'n' Rosy, Liza brings together some top players, including cousin, Rua Macmillan, winner of Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician Of the Year 2009, Alasdair Taylor of the Folk Award-winning band, The Elephant Sessions, and Robin Abbot of The Mystic Shoes. This intimate album comprises reflective ballads and uptempo songs with catchy choruses, complemented by rollicking trad-style tunes and dreamy instrumentals.

Stories Untold

Crossing Borders

Stories Untold is an intimate and inspiring collection of original songs, tackling topics including child soldiers, crime and punishment, loss, and love in its many forms. Early responses have been positive, with five stars from Spiral Earth, and album of the week from Iain Anderson and Celtic Music Radio.

‘Crossing Borders’ was a Celtic Connections commission in 2015 written for a nine piece ensemble and represents Graham's musical journey to date, reflecting on places, people and musical styles that have influenced him and his music. The piece draws on vibrant Scottish, Irish and Cape Breton styles and is written in four sections, each highlighting one of these cultures. It brings together a fusion of traditional and classical styles in his own composition.

This Girl, This Woman is the debut album by 57-yearold singer Jude Adams, who discovered her talent following a life-changing M.E. diagnosis. The album, which Jude describes as soulful pop with a 60s twist, contains 10 tracks all written and sung by Jude, and produced and arranged by musician Janette Mason. Jude comments: " I always loved to sing, and I always did, but behind closed doors. It was only when I got to 50 that I summoned the courage to start singing in public. And then two years later I was diagnosed with M.E. Performing, work and many ways in which I lived my life had to stop or change significantly. It was debilitating, but led to a lot of personal reflection, and ultimately the silver lining of discovering a passion for songwriting." Wild Things

The Vivians 10th Anniversary Demos Album #TheVivians10yr - To mark their 10th anniversary of forming, cult indie punk band The Vivians will release a collection of songs spanning their tumultuous career. The self-titled album, digitally released 26th August 2016, will comprise newly mastered unreleased demos and rarities, recorded between 2006 and 2010, accompanied by a new video and artwork. Formed in August 2006, The Vivians dared to dream big and set out to achieve great things. From their humble beginnings in a basement rehearsal room in Edinburgh, through to splitting in April 2010, the band’s story is one of dreams, misguidance and brotherhood.

Wild Things is the first release from East Lothian Alt-Folk singer songwriter Baron Salmon. The four songs are tender tales of moving on, each one showcasing the musicianship, the fine singing and the mature songwriting of their creator. In these songs we also glimpse some of his influences, from Dylan to Bonnie Prince Billy, to Tallest Man on Earth, whilst never losing sight of the exciting new sound that belongs to Baron Salmon.

Album - cd - Release Date: Out Now This CD is the culmination of a much earlier celebration, in music and song, of ‘The Wallace’ in 2005, by way of a commission from Alasdair Campbell who was then with The Tolbooth Music and Arts venue in Stirling. This was followed by another commission by Carolyn Paterson in 2014 to celebrate another icon of history of whom we know a good bit more than the former, Robert de Brus of Norman French stock, the 14th C warlord who became King, regaining Scotland’s place as an Independent nation. This orchestrated progression of music ranges from an arrangement of a classic traditional pibroch theme, in its most appropriate animated and rhythmic presentation, to specially composed and arranged pieces. Melodies are presented on a range of pipes in several different keys, overlaid and blended with percussion, clarsach, cello, soprano saxophone, violin, whistle and vocals. PAUL TASKER

DAVID ALTAIR

Human Condition

Cold Weather Music

B-Sides

This is Doghouse Roses' guitarist Paul Tasker's first solo album. An all instrumental album peformed on fingerstyle guitar and clawhammer banjo with flute, flatpicked guitar, cello, pedal steel guitar and percussion. The 10 tracks are musical responses to both real life and imagined events and largely have a folk or old time Americana feel, but with 2 guitar duets adding a jazz tinge.

David Altair has just released his 6th album entitled ‘B-Sides’. This is some work that was previously never released and is quite rare. The album has quite a psychedelic feel to it especially ‘we can’t stop now (the Wall)’. The album flows into a journey of ambient sounds and experimentation.

Album / cd / download Release Date: 29 April

The Mars Patrol have been honing their stirring alternative rock sound over a series of rapturouslyreceived EPs and singles. Now it’s time for their first album "Human Condition".
