Paisley to host the Scottish Album of the Year (SAY) Award again in 2018 The most prestigious night in Scotland’s music calendar is to stay in Paisley – after it was confirmed the Scottish Album of the Year Award will return to the town in 2018.

“Paisley’s bid to be UK City of Culture 2021 put the town on a Scotland-wide stage in terms of hosting events of national importance and that was always going to continue regardless of the result. “The SMIA could have taken this event anywhere but for them to choose to come back here shows the extent to which Paisley is now recognised as one of Scotland’s centres of cultural excellence. “The town has a fantastic musical heritage – from Gerry Rafferty through to Paolo Nutini – and a thriving music scene, including our annual Spree festival each October, at which many of the previous SAY Award winners and shortlisted acts have played.

The SAY Award – the most coveted music prize in Scotland – will take place in Paisley Town Hall for a third consecutive year on a date to be confirmed in August 2018. The event was brought back to Paisley after a successful bid from Renfrewshire Council, as part of a wider plan to promote the town as a key destination for culture and events within Scotland.

“Paisley Town Hall makes a striking venue and we look forward to welcoming the country’s music industry back to the town for what will be another momentous night next August.”

Although Paisley lost out to Coventry in its bid to be UK City of Culture 2021, bid bosses believe the return of the SAY Award is one of many ways the bid momentum will continue.

The SAY Award goes to the Scottish artist deemed to have produced the year’s outstanding album. It started in 2012 and is organised by the Scottish Music Industry Association. Sacred Paws won this year’s SAY Award for their debut album Strike a Match – chosen from a tenalbum shortlist by a panel of independent judges. The ceremony in Paisley in June was hosted by Vic Galloway and Nicola Meighan, broadcast live on BBC Radio Scotland, and watched by an audience of the country’s best creative talent. Other previous winners include Anna Meredith, Kathryn Joseph, Young Fathers, RM Hubbert and Aidan Moffat and Bill Wells.

Dougal Perman, chair of the SMIA said: “We’re delighted that Paisley will host the seventh Scottish Album of the Year Award. “Scotland’s national music prize has flourished in Paisley and while we are sad and disappointed that Paisley didn’t win their bid for UK City of Culture 2021, we are excited about the transformative cultural journey the town is on and excited to be a part of it. “Through our invited guests, public ballot for seats at the ceremony and live broadcasts, we look forward to welcoming as many people as http://bit.ly/issuu-googleplay

Royal Conservatoire of Scotland unveils sparkling new season of performance From Russian music masterpieces and award-winning musicals to cutting edge contemporary theatre and some of Shakespeare’s most treasured works, the imminent arrival of the New Year brings a new season of outstanding performances at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. Students will unleash their creative energy on a packed programme of events early in 2018 at Scotland’s national conservatoire, the country’s cultural hub for emerging talent across music, drama, dance, production, film and education. Ranked in the world’s top three for performing arts education, the new season cements the institution’s reputation as one of the country’s busiest performing arts venues, home to more than 500 performances each year. New season highlights include: Symphony: Led by conductor Geoffrey Paterson, the Royal Conservatoire’s Symphony Orchestra will light up Glasgow City Halls for a special evening of Russian repertoire featuring two of Stravinsky’s most iconic works, The Firebird Suite and Symphony in Three Movements, supported through the Royal Conservatoire’s partnership with Gleneagles. Completing the evening of Russian storytelling are Tchaikovsky’s symphonic poem, Hamlet: Fantasy Overture and Mussorgsky’s well-loved Night on Bald Mountain.

Stravinsky’s The Firebird Suite

Chamber: The annual Rosin Chamber Music Festival is an entire weekend in March devoted to chamber music, welcoming international visiting ensembles as well as Royal Conservatoire staff and students. Among the repertoire performed will be a cycle of Shostakovich’s 15 string quartets with RCS students playing side-by-side with the Brodsky Quartet and the award-winning Maxwell Quartet. Opera: Students perform the Scottish premiere of English National Opera’s production of The Day After by Jonathan Dove. The Day After is an unashamedly tonal operatic retake on the Greek myth of Phaeton who fancies himself a God, but

whose youthful impetuousness leads him to disaster and tragedy. This special remounting of the original production is directed by ENO’s Artistic Director, Jamie Manton, and new Head of Opera, Philip White. The set was designed by Camilla Clarke, winner of the 2015 Linbury Prize. Musical theatre: Winner of eight Tony awards, four Oliviers and a Grammy for Best Original Cast Album, Spring Awakening redefined the boundaries between music and theatre with its fusion of adolescent angst-fuelled anthems. A group of emotionally unprepared teenagers try to understand their strong, new, thrilling and scary feelings. What’s right and what’s wrong? What are the rules? How far can they be pushed and what happens when you break them? Produced in association with Dundee Rep Theatre, BA Musical Theatre students perform this hard-hitting punk rock musical in the New Athenaeum Theatre before transferring to Dundee Rep Theatre. International artists: Ian Bousfield, Visiting Professor in Trombone and former Principal Trombone of the Vienna Philharmonic and Vienna State Opera, is joined by RCS Brass and Co-op Funeralcare Band for a brass spectacular. Meanwhile, renowned Scottish pianist Malcolm Martineau partners with esteemed performers including Dorothea Röschmann, Simon Keenlyside and former BBC New Generation Artist, Kitty Whately, for a series of concerts in partnership with BBC Radio 3. Professor Jeffrey Sharkey, Principal of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, said: “The first performance season of 2018 at Scotland’s national conservatoire will showcase our students’ excellence across the performing and production arts, as our emerging artists work alongside acclaimed professionals. “I look forward to welcoming you to the Royal Conservatoire as our students immerse themselves in the worlds of music, drama, dance, production and film, and thank you for your support.”

Glasgow’s south side. Trio Apaches, Ruby Hughes and the Broen Ensemble are among the performers taking to the stage for the relaxed Sunday morning series. The Royal Conservatoire’s acclaimed Fridays at One series returns, offering an end-of-the-week lunchtime musical treat. Cellist Raphael Wallfisch, London Symphony Orchestra Principal Flautist Adam Walker and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra Wind Soloists are some of the musicians taking to the stage for this popular afternoon event. February also sees the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra perform new interpretations of two universally popular children’s classics in a concert that will appeal to all ages. Tommy Smith’s jazz version of Peter and the Wolf will remain true to Prokofiev’s premise that particular instruments are allocated to each character and the wonderful melodies will be lovingly preserved while actor Tam Dean Burn will narrate new text specially adapted by Liz Lochhead. Makoto Ozone's vivid reimagining of Saint-Saëns’ Carnival of the Animals for jazz instrumentation will delight listeners and bring the composer’s animal cavalcade to life in ways that not even Saint-Saëns himself could possibly have imagined. Tickets and further information on performances at the Royal Conservatoire are available by logging on to www.rcs.ac.uk/boxoffice or by calling 0141 3320 5057. Tickets26 offers tickets for £5 for ages 26 and under. Deaf Theatre Club members can purchase a ticket at a discounted price of £5 on accessible performances. Members will be welcomed to the building by staff who have been trained in British Sign Language.

Contemporary Gaelic Singer Maeve Mackinnon releases her third studio album in February. Strì is a collection of songs in Gaelic and English, based on the themes of work, exile and struggle, from a woman’s perspective.

Jarlath Henderson alongside longtime collaborators Ross Martin and Brian McAlpine.

“Strì means to strive or struggle in Gaelic. My original idea was to revisit the songs I love, particularly Gaelic Waulking songs. Waulking songs are work songs traditionally sung by women in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland. They were hardy, tough women and they sang of battles, tragedies, breakups and romance. I realised midway through recording that nearly all the songs are from a female perspective, and the messages within them are so current today on the Year 2015 for Treacherous Orchestra’s Grind many levels”. along with many others!). The album is produced by multiple awardwinning producer and bassist Duncan Lyall (producer of Scots Trad Music Awards’ Album of

“The stories, melodies and rhythms convey so much. Whether you speak Gaelic or not, I think people can hear the power of feeling in these songs”. Strì is launched on Sunday 4 February at Glasgow Royal Concert Hall as part of Celtic Connections 2018.

With airplay earned in over seventy countries and counting, Traveller they were signed to a small independent record are winning fans all over the world with their label called City of Angels and we wrote and polished and melodic Rock. rehearsed daily in an old farm shed in the Scottish borders. Chosen to become the house Founder member Simon Usher, says "There band for a 'Hype', a BBC Choice TV show, they wasn’t much music in my house when I was travelled down to London each week to appear growing up. My mum and dad weren’t very live, performing a new song and playing a couple musical but there was an old upright piano of covers on each episode. Tony Visconte, after upstairs on the landing of our house which I appearing as a guest, was so impressed with the would mess about with and there were a few band that invited them to New York to spend a records stacked on a shelf in the sitting room that I would dig out and play repeatedly on their day with him in his studio. old record player, the best of which were by The Dutch Swing Band and Trini Lopez! I remember discovering ABBA and being fixated by the tight harmonies in many of their songs. I guess they were the first ever band for me that I really connected with because of that, but my first ever album on cassette tape was a pivotal experience for me. It was 'Tunnel of Love' by Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band. "

For Simon, his musical journey began when he moved to Yorkshire to study Jazz at The Leeds College of Music. Following garduation and a return to Scotland he founded a music agency called The Gig Supply placing bands into venues all over Scotland. The agency gained a good reputation and won a regional business award for innovation as well as gaining lots of respect from bands and venues across Scotland. It was at this time that Simon first met Brian, Traveller's bass player. As members of a band called Suburbia

vocal range. I felt that there was something very special about his sound and of course he is also a great guy. We decided to write some music together. I knew our bass player Brian lived in the same area so we tracked him down through a mutual friend and he immediately jumped on board. In January 2016 we invited a great local guitarist Martin to join the band and tyhe Traveller line up was completed". For fellow Traveller member Gerry, music has been in his blood from a very young age. His father encouraged him to try a variety of instruments, from guitar to chanter, but it was the Piano which would become his main focus. He explains "I wanted to go down a classical piano and composition route and it was during my two years at college that I first met our bass player Brian. About a year into my first year at college I joined a band called Midnight Swimmer playing lead keys. We were together for seven years, playing in great venues in Edinburgh such as the Liquid Rooms, the Venue and the Bongo Club, the latter is where I first met Simon and his band Suburbia".

Of the highlights of his time with Suburbia, Simon says "we travelled to Los Angeles under a small arrangement with Capitol Records to try and secure a bigger deal. The plan was to stay out there and record some new material and play a showcase gig at the legendary Viper Rooms in front of a packed venue of industry folk. Unfortunately, in the end our label negotiations didn’t work out, we returned home exhausted after a whirlwind experience and not really knowing what options we had for the future. After a short spell back, we decided to take a break from music however we have all since remained good friends.

A move to Glasgow in 2004 led to two years of well received gigs, before the members of Midnight Swimmer went their separate ways, But ten years on, Gerry is once again writing uplifting and anthemic music for Traveller. He says "I write from my heart about my life experiences, some of my best work has been written when I’m at my worst emotionally, the vulnerability, sharing my feelings with all to hear. With my best friends beside me, we put our feelings into the music and it makes Traveller the band you hear now".

Having known bandmate Gerry from the local live circuit, Simon explains that it was at Gerry's sister’s wedding where the two connected again. "Gerry was also singing a few songs on his acoustic guitar. I was blown away once more by his voice and style. He has a beautiful tone and

PAUL ANDERSON

AULD NEW HEIDS

The High Summit

AULD NEW HEIDS - Volume 1

After many years as a well-known face on the band circuit, Bob Leslie’s re-invention of himself as an acoustic performer resulted in two well-received Americana CDs - In a Different World (2010) and Fat Cat (2011) - and a re-launch onto the folk circuit. There, his highly-crafted songs - some serious, some very funny indeed - had audiences showing lively appreciation. However, more and more, Bob found himself drawn to the challenge of writing in a more traditional Scottish vein - a medium, as it turned out, ideal for a musical storyteller.

Paul Anderson from Royal Deeside in Aberdeenshire is one of Scotland’s finest traditional fiddle players and The High Summit is his third album of self penned music and song. Like The Singing Land and Land of the Standing Stones before it, The High Summit celebrates the history, landscape and people of Paul’s beautiful North-East homeland. Joining Paul on The High Summit are a group of exceptional artists, highly respected in their own right and adding their own touch of magic to the album. Shona Donaldson on vocals (Scots Singer of the Year 2009 and first female winner of the Bothy Ballad Champion of Champions), Tony McManus on guitar (worldrenowned Scottish guitarist now based in Canada), Malcolm Jones on guitar and accordion (Runrig), Ale Carr on Cittern (Dreamer’s Circus), Ali Napier on keyboards (Miami Vince and former member of the Dougie MacLean Band) and James Gorgon on percussion (Albany show band and The Cutting Edge).

This album embraces all that was great about the golden days of the scottish folk scene in the 1960s/70s. It is a catalogue of some of the best and most popular songs of the time written by folk legends such as Ewan MacColl, Alex Campbell, Hamish Henderson, Matt McGinn, Archie Fisher, Jim McLean and Mary Brookesbank. Also Robert Burns and Sir Walter Scott have a song each on the album. A quartet of four of Scotland’s most experienced performers brings together the vocal talents of brothers IAN and FRASER BRUCE along with the exceptional musical skills of PETE CLARK on fiddle and GREGOR LOWREY on accordion. It has to be said that IAN BRUCE is pretty efficient on guitar, to complete the instrumental section. Available from: www.birnamcdshop.com

Debut EP by 17 year old singer songwriter from Paisley funded by Paisley 2021 City of Culture bid and including four specially selected songs which reflect Lisa's personal and musical journey to date. Lyrics and melodies to express feelings, responses and reactions to people and places encountered.

Putting down a marker for all rock bands in 2017, Thula Borah have produced one of the best records you're likely to hear all year, creating a sound that defies any one genre; switching seamlessly from post-rock, posthardcore and dream-pop to grunge, indie-rock and emo. Indeed, Thula Borah have taken post-hardcore sensibilities and fuzzed out, meaty riffs and amalgamated them with catchy hooks that demand your attention.

The Treatment Tapes Bare Along The Branches

EP cd / download Release Date: 20 January

Norrie McCulloch’s third full-length album in as many years effortlessly merges folk, country, americana and indie genres. Recorded live to analogue tape with regular collaborators: Dave McGowan (Teenage Fanclub), Stuart Kidd and Marco Rea (The Wellgreen), Iain Thompson (Bella Hardy band) and Iain Sloan (Wynntown Marshals) this is his most accomplished collection of songs to date.

In January 2015, Rab Noakes was diagnosed with tonsillar cancer. Thirty radiotherapy sessions ensued. The post-treatment recovery included singing and, of course, writing songs. Six of those songs are on Rab’s new record. There’s no self-pity though, here you’ll find defiance, resilience, love, support and, hopefully, wit.

Guillotine was launched on 10th oct at Summerhall with a massive 19piece line-up including string and brass sextets. This was the only way to do the album justice. Guillotine is the culmination of the band's 8 year weekly residency at Edinburgh's notorious Jazz Bar. This is definitely a huge step up in Mike Kearney's production and writing style. Enjoy! My new album The Seas Between Us is out now! It has twelve old Scots and Gaelic songs, many of which I’ve been singing since I was a little girl. The Poets & The Beats album cd / download / stream Release Date: Out Now

The Poets and the Beats from Musician / producer Paul Armour (ex Seminal Glasgow Surf Pop Band “The Cuban Heels") “The album is very much a beat combo sound. Punchy with grooves using classic retro instruments: Rhodes Wurlitzer & Hammond, vintage amps and guitars. The feel is a mix of styles, melodic & rhythmic. Lyrically quirky with themes of hope and renewal. A recent review from Rock Fm. Scotland described the sound as “Weller-ish” but more refined! It’s all in the ear of the beholder. Stories Untold

Crossing Borders

To Be Free

Stories Untold is an intimate and inspiring collection of original songs, tackling topics including child soldiers, crime and punishment, loss, and love in its many forms. Early responses have been positive, with five stars from Spiral Earth, and album of the week from Iain Anderson and Celtic Music Radio.

‘Crossing Borders’ was a Celtic Connections commission in 2015 written for a nine piece ensemble and represents Graham's musical journey to date, reflecting on places, people and musical styles that have influenced him and his music. The piece draws on vibrant Scottish, Irish and Cape Breton styles and is written in four sections, each highlighting one of these cultures. It brings together a fusion of traditional and classical styles in his own composition.

To Be Free is an interim project - in between albums number one and two - for Glasgow's Martha L. Healy. Including two originals and two of Martha's favourite country classics, the EP was recorded with her band over a snowy weekend in Glasgow in January 2016.
