SSE Scottish Music Awards Raise £148,500 For Nordoff Robbins Scotland The 19th annual SSE Scottish Music Awards saw a large part of Scotland’s music industry come together to raise vital funds for Nordoff Robbins Scotland. 2017’s SSE Scottish Music Awards raised an incredible total of £148,500 for music therapy charity Nordoff Robbins Scotland at Glasgow’s Old Fruitmarket on 2 December. A particular highlight of the night included a personalised video message from The Rolling Stones themselves! Arguably the greatest band of all time, the iconic line-up, including Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts and Ronnie Wood, sent a message for the winner of the Scottish Music Hall of Fame, sponsored by the Royal Highland Centre, Ian Stewart. Born in Fife, Ian was the co-founder, pianist and subsequently road manager of The Stones with Keith Richards himself writing in his 2010 autobiography, “Ian Stewart. I’m still working for him. To me The Rolling Stone is his band.” Ian’s wife and son collected the award and were both touched by the surprise video from Ian’s fellow Rolling Stones Keith, Mick, Charlie and Ronnie. Mick Jagger said: “You know the thing about him was that I don't think the Rolling Stones would ever have got going if it hadn’t been for him. He was a great player. He was a great piano player. He was a great guy that got us all together.”
“It’s great to be recognised by the folk in music in Scotland, it feels like I’ve been welcomed into the industry.” There were also performances from Emeli Sandé, Nina Nesbitt, The Temperance Movement, Lewis Capaldi, Hipsway and Tom Walker. Leading energy company SSE returned to sponsor the 19th Scottish Music Awards, which simultaneously celebrates Scotland’s world-renowned music scene and provides much-needed fundraising for vulnerable children and adults across the country. The SSE Scottish Music Awards are a vital part of the charity’s ability to provide music therapists and sessions to those who need it most, and has been the main fundraising event for Nordoff Robbins Scotland since 1996, contributing phenomenal amounts to the charity. Colin Banks, Head of Sponsorship at SSE said, “As a partner of Nordoff Robbins Scotland, SSE are proud to continue working in collaboration with the amazing charity, supporting them in making a meaningful difference to adults and children across the country. The SSE Scottish Music Awards is a wonderful celebration of our rich music and culture and we are delighted to return to support the 19th annual event.”
Donald MacLeod, chairman of Nordoff Robbins Scotland, said: “What a night! ROSS AINSLIE :: album :: 'Sanctuary' release date - 1 December @ www.rossainslie.bandcamp.com
This third album from Ross Ainslie brings together a lot of his influences over the years playing in bands like Salsa Celtica and India Alba. Ross has always been a fan of Mike Oldfield album ‘Tubular Bells’ and this album is based on the same idea and designed to be listened to like a journey. The album plays continuously from start to finish and as a bonus
extra for pre-release copies you will receive the album in 1 track (digital format) the way it should be. ‘Sanctuary’ is a term Ross likes to use when describing what music is for him, coming up to five years sober!! Ross has been through some big changes and found ways of coping with certain situations without alcohol. “I’ve found that I’m spending a lot of time on my own these days, being a travelling musician a lot of the social time is centred around drinking so I found it hard to be around so I would retreat to my room a lot, at first it took some time to get used to my own company but as the years have gone on I’ve found it to be a very productive and creative space, if I’m having a particularly bad day music is always the thing that will pick me up so that’s why this album is called Sanctuary”. ‘Inner Sanctuary’ is a track heavily influenced by his travels to India, it features a debut performance on Bansuri from Ross. The musicians on this album were selected very carefully and are all very comfortable in many genres, this track shows Greg Lawson playing with an Indian style. ‘Home in Another Dimension’ features one of Ross’s favourite musicians in the world, the one and only Zakir Hussain on tabla and also British/Indian Sarod maestro Soumik Datta. This track demonstrates a different style in writing for Ross with a definite Eastern flavour. ‘Let the Wild Ones Roam’ is a straight ahead rocking set of reels with the guys in their natural habitat. Damien O’Kane adds some amazing banjo to this track. All the music on the album is composed by Ross apart from “Surroundings” which was composed by Ross and Jamie Maclean. Ross Ainslie is one of Scotland’s finest traditional musicians and composers, playing pipes, whistles and cittern. He is renowned for his highly acclaimed solo material, and as a skilled performer and prolific collaborator who performs regularly with bands Treacherous Orchestra (of which he is a founding member), Salsa Celtica, Dougie Maclean, Ali Hutton, Charlie Mckerron, Jarlath Henderson and India Alba.

scotland's new releases ..... album : single : ep / cd : vinyl : download BOB LESLIE
PAUL ANDERSON
AULD NEW HEIDS
Land and Sea
The High Summit
AULD NEW HEIDS - Volume 1
After many years as a well-known face on the band circuit, Bob Leslie’s re-invention of himself as an acoustic performer resulted in two well-received Americana CDs - In a Different World (2010) and Fat Cat (2011) - and a re-launch onto the folk circuit. There, his highly-crafted songs - some serious, some very funny indeed - had audiences showing lively appreciation. However, more and more, Bob found himself drawn to the challenge of writing in a more traditional Scottish vein - a medium, as it turned out, ideal for a musical storyteller.
Paul Anderson from Royal Deeside in Aberdeenshire is one of Scotland’s finest traditional fiddle players and The High Summit is his third album of self penned music and song. Like The Singing Land and Land of the Standing Stones before it, The High Summit celebrates the history, landscape and people of Paul’s beautiful North-East homeland. Joining Paul on The High Summit are a group of exceptional artists, highly respected in their own right and adding their own touch of magic to the album. Shona Donaldson on vocals (Scots Singer of the Year 2009 and first female winner of the Bothy Ballad Champion of Champions), Tony McManus on guitar (worldrenowned Scottish guitarist now based in Canada), Malcolm Jones on guitar and accordion (Runrig), Ale Carr on Cittern (Dreamer’s Circus), Ali Napier on keyboards (Miami Vince and former member of the Dougie MacLean Band) and James Gorgon on percussion (Albany show band and The Cutting Edge).

Land and Sea is the result: twelve narrative songs, their subjects ranging from the Highland Clearances to a Stromness witch who told Walter Scott a few tales. Bob is accompanied by some of the brightest talents on the Scottish folk scene. Available from: www.birnamcdshop.com www.bobleslie.scot

album cd Release Date: 10 July
This album embraces all that was great about the golden days of the scottish folk scene in the 1960s/70s. It is a catalogue of some of the best and most popular songs of the time written by folk legends such as Ewan MacColl, Alex Campbell, Hamish Henderson, Matt McGinn, Archie Fisher, Jim McLean and Mary Brookesbank. Also Robert Burns and Sir Walter Scott have a song each on the album. A quartet of four of Scotland’s most experienced performers brings together the vocal talents of brothers IAN and FRASER BRUCE along with the exceptional musical skills of PETE CLARK on fiddle and GREGOR LOWREY on accordion. It has to be said that IAN BRUCE is pretty efficient on guitar, to complete the instrumental section. Available from: www.birnamcdshop.com

Debut EP by 17 year old singer songwriter from Paisley funded by Paisley 2021 City of Culture bid and including four specially selected songs which reflect Lisa's personal and musical journey to date. Lyrics and melodies to express feelings, responses and reactions to people and places encountered.
Putting down a marker for all rock bands in 2017, Thula Borah have produced one of the best records you're likely to hear all year, creating a sound that defies any one genre; switching seamlessly from post-rock, posthardcore and dream-pop to grunge, indie-rock and emo. Indeed, Thula Borah have taken post-hardcore sensibilities and fuzzed out, meaty riffs and amalgamated them with catchy hooks that demand your attention.

The Treatment Tapes Bare Along The Branches
EP cd / download Release Date: 20 January
Norrie McCulloch’s third full-length album in as many years effortlessly merges folk, country, americana and indie genres. Recorded live to analogue tape with regular collaborators: Dave McGowan (Teenage Fanclub), Stuart Kidd and Marco Rea (The Wellgreen), Iain Thompson (Bella Hardy band) and Iain Sloan (Wynntown Marshals) this is his most accomplished collection of songs to date.
In January 2015, Rab Noakes was diagnosed with tonsillar cancer. Thirty radiotherapy sessions ensued. The post-treatment recovery included singing and, of course, writing songs. Six of those songs are on Rab’s new record. There’s no self-pity though, here you’ll find defiance, resilience, love, support and, hopefully, wit.

Expect post-rock instrumentation with nontraditional song structures; and math-rock subtleties as a bed for Bob Dick’s introspective and often cryptic lyrics. The title of this latest release from Richard Buchanan, former bass player with 90’s Scottish under-achievers The Lost Soul Band, is a mondegreen, or misheard words. This unashamed pop song describes a special, enduring friendship with a fellow troubadour and features an odd instrumental section.

Guillotine was launched on 10th oct at Summerhall with a massive 19piece line-up including string and brass sextets. This was the only way to do the album justice. Guillotine is the culmination of the band's 8 year weekly residency at Edinburgh's notorious Jazz Bar. This is definitely a huge step up in Mike Kearney's production and writing style. Enjoy! My new album The Seas Between Us is out now! It has twelve old Scots and Gaelic songs, many of which I’ve been singing since I was a little girl. The Poets & The Beats album cd / download / stream Release Date: Out Now
The Poets and the Beats from Musician / producer Paul Armour (ex Seminal Glasgow Surf Pop Band “The Cuban Heels") “The album is very much a beat combo sound. Punchy with grooves using classic retro instruments: Rhodes Wurlitzer & Hammond, vintage amps and guitars. The feel is a mix of styles, melodic & rhythmic. Lyrically quirky with themes of hope and renewal. A recent review from Rock Fm. Scotland described the sound as “Weller-ish” but more refined! It’s all in the ear of the beholder. Enjoy the beats…” Listen/Watch: https://soundcloud.com www.youtube.com Available from: www.birnamcdshop.com www.paularmour.co.uk https://twitter.com/paul497191 www.facebook.com/paul.armour.31

Stories Untold
Crossing Borders
To Be Free
Stories Untold is an intimate and inspiring collection of original songs, tackling topics including child soldiers, crime and punishment, loss, and love in its many forms. Early responses have been positive, with five stars from Spiral Earth, and album of the week from Iain Anderson and Celtic Music Radio.
‘Crossing Borders’ was a Celtic Connections commission in 2015 written for a nine piece ensemble and represents Graham's musical journey to date, reflecting on places, people and musical styles that have influenced him and his music. The piece draws on vibrant Scottish, Irish and Cape Breton styles and is written in four sections, each highlighting one of these cultures. It brings together a fusion of traditional and classical styles in his own composition.
To Be Free is an interim project - in between albums number one and two - for Glasgow's Martha L. Healy. Including two originals and two of Martha's favourite country classics, the EP was recorded with her band over a snowy weekend in Glasgow in January 2016.
