WIDE DAYS ANNOUNCES 2014 DATES & EARLY BIRD TICKETS Watch The Wide Days 2014 Trailer here: http://youtu.be/o1jb_y3PjF8 Buy Early Bird tickets before 16 January @ www.widedays.com/tickets

Scotland’s Wide Days music business convention has introduced a new format for its daytime programme, which will take place at Teviot Row House in Edinburgh on 9-10 April. Day one will focus on topics relating to the live sector. John Langford, director of concerts, events and ticketing at The Hydro, is confirmed to take part in an interview about the flagship Glasgow venue and its impact. The sessions on day two will concentrate on topics relating to rights holders record labels, publishers, artists and managers – with one panel set to feature decision makers from radio, retail and digital platforms talking about why they get behind a release. “Wide Days 2013 was our most successful event yet, with unprecedented media coverage and directors from some of the world’s leading music companies attending,” says founder Olaf Furniss. “Wide Days 2014 is our fifth anniversary and we plan to make it even better.” Organisers have frozen the price of both the standard pass [£49] and the premium pass [£125], which helps raise funds to host the event and support the concession rates [£38 students and £34 Musicians’ Union members].

In this 2014 preview film on YouTube Wide Days founder Olaf Furniss discusses the music conventions roots and what delegates can expect to take from the two day music industry conference in Edinburgh - which includes showcases of highly rated bands and musicians to keep an eye on in the future. Watch the full video at http://youtu.be/o1jb_y3PjF8

Delegates registering before 16 January, when further details of the programme will be announced, benefit from a special early bird rate of £33 [standard] and £100 [premium]. Wide Days 2014 convention passes can be purchased from: www.widedays.com/tickets Wide Days is Scotland’s only convention dedicated exclusively to music business seminars, presentations and showcases. The annual boutique event is hosted in Edinburgh by not-for-profit organisation Born To Be Wide. It provides a forum for the next generation of industry players and veterans to exchange knowledge and ideas. Since its launch in 2010, Wide Days has consistently attracted high-profile speakers including leading festival promoters, managers, publishers and technology experts. Its concise live programme, which is open to the public, provides a snapshot of some of Scotland’s most exciting emerging acts, across a diverse range of genres. In 2013, BBC Newsnight Scotland filmed a report on the music industry from Wide Days and the event was described as “an unmissable fixture in our calendar” by leading trade publication Record Of The Day. Young ambassadors root for live orchestral music Sixteen to eighteen year olds across Scotland are being recruited by Scotland’s national orchestra to promote live orchestral music to their peers, as part of a new initiative to increase youth attendance of classical music concerts. The Royal Scottish National Orchestra announced its ambition to connect with School pupils nationwide earlier this year, when it launched its RSNO Engage programme of performances, workshops and community activities. It has now appointed over twenty Young Ambassadors to its programme, covering nearly every local authority in the country, from Highland to Argyll and Bute. Young Ambassadors will be able to attend RSNO concerts for free and will get to know the musicians, artistic team and staff. They will be assigned a mentor who will assist with career development and will have input in the Orchestra’s future plans to engage with young people across the country. This will be open to all young people aged sixteen to eighteen with a passion for music, regardless of whether they are learning an instrument. The Young Ambassadors will be expected to attend RSNO concerts in their area, promote RSNO activities online, create a ‘classical music’ board in their school or community to highlight opportunities for young people to be involved, and attend five forums across Scotland, to discuss ways in which the RSNO can improve engagement. In return, the Young Ambassadors will receive free tickets for RSNO concerts, career development advice, be assigned a mentor from a department within the RSNO, and will be given the opportunity to influence the RSNO’s strategy. New RSNO Young Ambassador Susannah Mack, from the Highlands: “I'm delighted to be working with young people across the country to promote classical music, giving me a chance to show off the musical talent in the Highlands at the same time. I've already had incredible new experiences (for example interviewing Nicola Benedetti!) and I'm really looking forward to the exciting plans to come.” Seona Glenn, from Stirling: “The world of classical music is so enriching and enjoyable to me that I want shout it from the rooftops! Young Ambassadors allows me to share my great passion for music with others of my age, and encourage them to enjoy its diversity, and engage.” Thea Sands, from Renfrewshire: “I'm excited by the prospect of change and the opportunity I've been given to work amongst people with similar passions. It's wonderful to use my love of orchestral music to help others explore the form. I hope to aid the integration of this musical form into youth culture for the future.” RSNO Director of Learning and Engagement Jenn Minchin: “We have been surprised and delighted at the response to our appeal for the Young Ambassador scheme. Every participant will be able to contribute to the success of Scotland’s national orchestra with their own unique set of skills and contacts. We look forward to recruiting many more Ambassadors for live orchestral music in the future.”

Capercaillie Celebrates 30 Years In The Limelight On BBC Alba Capercaillie@30 - watch on iPlayer @ www.bbc.co.uk/i/b03lsycg/ until 3 January

It is easy to forget that not so long ago, Scotland’s traditional music landscape was in a perilous state. The 1970s were a period of uncertainty, few children were choosing to learn instruments, folk clubs were a small, niche affair, and it simply wasn’t ‘cool’ to play traditional music. However, it is against this backdrop, a group of Oban High school pupils decided to combine their musical talents and form a folk band. Fast-forward through the intervening 30 years and that young school band, Capercaillie, have achieved a position on the global music stage that, at the time of their forming, would have been unthinkable. BBC ALBA’s compelling documentary ‘Capercaillie@30’ takes viewers on the road, accompanies the band to a selection of their live international gigs and offering a unique glimpse of life on tour. The programme sets out to tell two remarkable, parallel stories. 2013 sees Capercallie set out on their 30th year together, a year that was to be full of memorable moments. We follow this year in the intimate company of the band, who paint a candid picture of their life's work as we chart the career and continued success of one of Scotland’s most respected musical outfits. Alongside this main narrative, the film interweaves the story of our cultural and musical landscape, from a time of obscurity and decline, up to the present day when, as a nation, we have a renewed confidence and pride in our music and culture. ‘Capercaillie@30’ tells of their growth and not insignificant achievements…To date they have sold over a million albums world wide, they were the first to achieve a Gaelic song in the UK Top 40, their music was the soundtrack to Hollywood blockbuster Rob Roy and they have performed in over thirty countries including Iraq, Macedonia and the Sudan. A rich archive of tv and film work illustrates the developing sound of the band, who were never afraid to reinvent their style in order to remain at the forefront of the genre. Throughout the programme we will hear from musical legends including Phil Cunningham MBE, Donal Lunny, Allan MacDonald and Mary Ann Kennedy. Capercaillie is one of only a few bands, from any genre, who can claim an unbroken 30 year relationship. Their music has been taken into the hearts of the European audience and blazed a trail for others to follow.

Don't Sign up for War : 4th Annual Alistair Hulett Memorial Concert Glasgow : 19 January @ Celtic Connections www.alistairhulett.com/the-alistair-hulett-memorial-trust/ The Alistair Hulett Memorial Trust is delighted to announce Don't Sign up for War: The 4th Annual Alistair Hulett Memorial Concert at Celtic Connections, which will take place on 19 January in the beautiful setting of St Andrews in the Square. The line-up includes renowned Glasgow poet Tom Leonard and Roy Bailey, one of the UK's most revered and redoubtable political singers and songwriters, keeper of the flame for folk music's role as a voice of resistance. Also on the bill is Scotland's Ewan McLennan, a richly gifted heir to this tradition, having won the 2013 Alistair Hulett Songs for Social Justice Award, and 2011 BBC Radio2 Horizon Award. Other special guests are still to be announced. The previous three concerts all sold out, as did the Trust’s recent Tribute to Victor Jara Concert in September, part of the Chile 40 Years On commemorations, which was headlined by Trust patron Peggy Seeger. The Alistair Hulett Memorial Trust is a non-profit association established in the United Kingdom after the untimely death in 2010 of singer, songwriter, political activist and social justice advocate, Alistair Hulett. In addition to promoting Alistair’s legacy the trust aims to develop new traditional songwriting, including multicultural songs, as well as promoting diversity, equality and harmony through music. AHMT is based in UK, with a sister trust – AHMF - in Australia, where Alistair established a strong following and a second home. One of the key strands of the Trust’s work is the annual Alistair Hulett Songs for Social Justice Award, which was won in 2013 by Ewan McLennan with Joe Glenton. The competition is open to songwriters and musicians anywhere in the UK, and focuses on songs promoting equality and social justice. Last year’s competition attracted over 20 entries. The deadline for submission of songs for the 2014 competition is 30 October.

Recent grant recipients include musicians David Featherstone and Alasdair Roberts (recording tracks for inclusion on the newly released CD The Janey Buchan Political Song Collection (University of Glasgow)) and David Rovics (for petrol money to play at Occupy Wall Street encampments). Other activities funded include community projects, PA hire and a student oral history project – Survivors of Violence. The AHMT is funded by public donations, concerts, and merchandising – with a wide range of CDs, Tshirts and other items available through their website. They recently launched Justice for Victor Jara, a new 7 track CD of Chile related songs. The songs are from Peggy Seeger, Christy Moore, Adam McNaughtan, Carlos Arredondo, Rory McLeod and Dave Featherstone, all of whom, together with their record companies and music publishers, generously gave permission to use the materials; the CD also includes Alistair’s own Victor Jara of Chile. Adam Holmes

: Debut Album : 'Heirs And Graces'

release date - 17 January : www.adamholmesandtheembers.com

One of the brightest rising stars on today’s world-renowned Scottish folk scene, 23-year-old Adam Holmes is a singer and songwriter of rare and timeless potency, drawing on influences from either side of the Atlantic. Holmes’s eagerly-awaited debut album Heirs and Graces was produced by the legendary John Wood, whose signature balance of space, perspective, clarity and warmth - as heard on seminal recordings by John Martyn, Nick Drake, Pink Floyd, Fairport Convention and many more – supplies the perfect complement to Holmes’s stripped-down yet richly sensuous sound. Digitally released in September 2013, Heirs and Graces reached No. 12 in the iTunes chart, and saw Holmes nominated as Up and Coming Artist of the Year in the 2013 Scots Trad Music Awards. He launches the CD version with a show at Glasgow’s illustrious Celtic Connections festival on 17 January, backed by his regular live band The Embers. After starting out on fiddle, Edinburgh-born Holmes switched to guitar at 14, and began writing songs a year or so later. Heirs and Graces’ gorgeously rueful I Can’t Be Right was the first he ever completed. Leaving school at 15, he worked on building sites and as an outdoor activities instructor before deciding, on his 20th birthday, to pursue music full-time. Having already been a finalist in the 2009 Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician of the Year competition, he also reached the finals of the following year’s UK-wide BBC Young Folk Award. He was then recruited by young traditional firebrands Rura, who themselves won Up and Coming Act of the Year at the 2011 Scots Trad Music Awards - a status affirmed by their subsequent nomination for the Radio 2 Folk Awards Horizon prize 2013. All the while, Holmes was crafting and burnishing the songs now featured on Heirs and Graces, at gigs ranging from tiny folk clubs to major festival stages, including Cambridge Folk Festival and the Hebridean Celtic Festival. His sound draws at least as heavily on Americana as on Scottish influences - though with lyrics and vocals very much shaped by his own accent. Other concerns explored on Heirs and Graces include confronting mortality (the haunting, heart-stricken Oh My God), the bitterness of disillusionment (the intimately understated, starkly clear-eyed Shadows) and the rocky road to acceptance (modern-day spiritual Aviemore, featuring guest singer Hannah Beaton’s piquant harmony vocals). Among the album’s rich crop of love-songs are its deliciously mellow, gladsome opener, Monday Morning, the incantatory, nakedly heartfelt Common Ground, adorned with dreamy swirls of Alan Train’s pedal steel, and a vividly-recalled paean to a fleeting but intense encounter, Fire in the Sun. Singer/guitarist Kris Drever, of Lau, is another notable guest, Front and centre, though, is Holmes’ uniquely distinctive, seductively compelling

voice - both fervently tender and huskily careworn. Allied with the equally startling maturity of his songcraft, it makes Heirs and Graces an album which, while standing on the shoulders of giants, is unmistakably Holmes’s own, quietly triumphant achievement.

Red Sands : Debut Album : 'Red Sands' release date - out now : www.facebook.com/theredsands From dreamy West Coast psych to fuzzy acid-folk and prog, Glasgow’s Red Sands wear their musical hearts firmly on their sleeves. Their stunning self-titled debut album has already received some advance radio exposure from BBC Radio 2 and 6 Music, described by Mark Radcliffe as “shimmering and lovely” and being heartily recommend Lauren Laverne. 2013 was a year that eat up all manner of new psych and progressive acts that adhered to the past yet impressed the masses – see: Allah Las on The Andrew Marr Show and the YouTube video of a US school choir performing Tame Impala's ‘Looks Like We Can Only Go Backwards’ for proof. Will things continue to challenge the norm? We think so. Red Sands will sit certainly please fans of Midlake, The Merrylees, The See See and label mates The Wicked Whispers. In fact, for anyone who misses Fleet Foxes gentle blend of vocal harmonies Red Sands may well be exactly what they’re looking for as they too also continue to bring the best from the past to today.

SIENNA

Paul Anderson, from the heart of rural Aberdeenshire, is one of Scotland’s most respected traditional musicians. Land of the Standing Stones is really a love letter to Paul’s native Aberdeenshire as all but a couple of the 51 tunes on the album are inspired by the people, landscape and history of the North-East of Scotland. The music on the album has all been composed by Paul himself and at 70 minutes in length, it’s a considerable achievement. The music, though rooted in the traditional Scots fiddle idiom, is also contemporary in style. He has been ably supported in this by a superb group of musicians, which includes Shona Donaldson (Scots singer of the year 2009), Swedish citern genius Ale Carr, Ali Napier (Dougie MacLean band) and Scottish acting star Kevin McKidd on guitar and vocals.

Second Fiddle

Lose this Feeling

Album / ep / single? : cd / download Release Date: Out Now

Esotero

Album : cd / download Release Date: Out Now This debut album, Second Fiddle, is a collection of melodic songs and instrumentals from Scottish singer/songwriter Rowan Ross. The tracks were written at various points in his life. His songs show a great deal of clarity and depth. The title "Second Fiddle" came from one of the songs on the album, and is also a reference to the two violins he used in the recordings : one dark in colour and tone, and the other light. Rowan is joined by a host of musicians on this album, including Alyn Cosker, Angus Lyon, Gillian Fleetwood, Konrad Wiszniewski, Louis Abbot, Maeve MacKinnon, Rick Standley, Rosie Townhill and Sam West.

"The Voice" Season 3 runner-up Terry McDermott and his band the Bonfires have returned with another stunning, sweeping Britrock ballad, co-written with Todd Burman of Australia's Juke Kartel. (Todd also worked on Terry's first post-"Voice" single, "Pictures," which went to number one on the iTunes rock chart.) And judging by the new video for the track, Terry hasn't lost the feeling at all, perfectly suits the dreamy song...and yes, it does rock. (Lyndsey Parker / Rolling Stone)

The new single from Irish folk singer Heidi Talbot’s latest album ‘Angels Without Wings’, is a beautiful modern day folk song. Co written and sung with King Creosote, AKA Kenny Anderson, ‘Button Up’ was created after the pair discovered a mutual admiration: “He was asked to pick his fantasy band for The Independent and he picked me and Morten Harket from A-ha on joint lead vocals,” Heidi laughs. She conceived the melody for Button Up with Anderson in mind, and he sent back his own lyrics. The result is a brooding urgent love song. Heidi is touring the UK in November ande December with multi instrumentalist/Producer John McCusker and Irish Guitarist and singer John Doyle.

Bearpit Brothers formed from roots musician Jim Byrne and members of the Creeping Charlies; Robert Ruthven and Larry Alexander.
