Another special moment on the night was the return of cult indie band Idlewild, who have been honoured with the King Tuts Songwriting Award and also spoiled the audience with an exclusive performance featuring their new line up. Big surprise of the night was the Sunday Mail Music Business Award that went to accomplished music promoter Mark Mackie, whose 25 years in the industry has seen him promote artists such as Oasis, Tom Waits and Leonard Cohen. Closing the ceremony was chart-dominating girl band Neon Jungle, who have had 4 singles in the top 20 from their Top 10 album Welcome To the Jungle. 17 year old band member Shereen Cutkelvin originates from Scotland but now spends her time travelling the world supporting Jessie J and playing at the famous Victoria’s Secret fashion show in New York.

Following their performance, the very special Sir Reo Stakis Living Legend Award was presented to American Dr. Steve Foreman; a worldwide respected session musician and tutor who has played with David Bowie and Pink Floyd but recently hit the headlines when his salary did not meet VISA requirements.

Co- Chair of Nordoff Robbins Scotland, Donald MacLeod commented on the events of the evening saying; “We continue to be both amazed and overwhelmed by the generosity of the Scottish Music scene and public, tonight has been no exception. The Scottish Music Awards are the main source of funding for the charity, and it is hugely important to us that we continue to be able to support those that need us across the country, this year our appeal is even more important as we aim to launch a new service in Aberdeen. Donald continued, “Our thanks go to all those who continue to support the charity, and in particular the musicians who make us so proud of our unique and thriving music scene. The talent on display tonight were all thoroughly deserving and it’s fantastic to be able to celebrate their success with their industry peers.” The Scottish Music Awards has rounded off Glasgow’s year long celebration of sport and culture in the city and hopes that the money raised from the night will have a lasting impact on the charity.

Academy of Music and Sound launches groundbreaking Music Industry Apprenticeships

The Academy of Music and Sound (AMS), in partnership with Fife and Glasgow Kelvin Colleges are launching a groundbreaking new creative apprenticeship scheme in Scotland. The scheme will be funded by Skills Development Scotland “the national skills body supporting the people and businesses of Scotland to develop and apply their skills”. The scheme is the only one of its kind available in Scotland. From early January, young people between the ages of 16-19 who have an interest in working in the creative industries will be offered the opportunity to complete a CBQ Diploma in Music Business with AMS while simultaneously being employed by a music industry employer – a record label, PR company or event promoter. Training will be given in marketing, event organisation, image and PR, artist development, legal issues and digital/physical distribution. The programme has a strong focus on self-employment skills and will enable entrepreneurial young people to develop a network of professional contacts as well as gaining real-world experience in the industry. Following a pilot scheme last year, successful graduates have gone on to find employment within the thriving Scottish music industry. Adele Brown, a previous graduate of the scheme, who has since gained employment with an Easterhouse based youth music service commented: “I really enjoyed the apprenticeship, it was a great experience and I learned a great deal…working on the release of material by a singer/songwriter and an alt rock band meant we got to see what it was like to work with artists from different genres and the different routes you have to explore in order to accommodate them best. I liked the fact that we got to put into practice the stuff that we were taught…The apprenticeship helped me to grow my confidence and knowledge of the music industry. I would recommend it to anyone interested in a music industry career.”

www.hebceltfest.com

Program mentor, Adam Armit of Circular records comments: “The biggest hurdle faced by those pursuing a career in music is developing the skills and professional networks that are essential to most roles. A main advantage of the apprenticeship program is that young people are given the chance to gain essential real life experience with real world music industry employers; while getting out into the scene and forging the networks and relationships upon which music industry careers are so heavily dependent” The Academy of Music and Sound are now inviting applications from all interested young people for January starts, to apply, simply send a copy of your CV to: Glasgow: Glasgow@academyofmusic.ac.uk or Edinburgh: Edinburgh@academyofmusic.ac.uk

Christmas Family Festivities start - Deck the Halls with Owen & Olly Children’s Classic Concerts and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra (RSNO) will be preparing for the festive season in style as they deck the concert halls of Glasgow and Edinburgh with a sparkling selection of musical treats including a miniature version of Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker ballet this Saturday and Sunday (7+8 December). Children’s Classic Concerts’ popular percussionist presenters Owen Gunnell and Oliver Cox, together with RSNO conductor Jean-Claude Picard, will be donning their Santa hats to lead the seasonal celebrations. They will be joined by the Manor School of Ballet and Area Choirs from the award-winning National Youth Choir of Scotland, to kick off the seasonal celebrations. Children’s Classic Concerts presenter Owen Gunnell: “We love involving ballet dancers in our Christmas concerts, but this year we thought we could do something really special and present the whole story of The Nutcracker – in a nutshell! Olly and I will be narrating and playing, and we’ll have lots of help from the dancers and the choir.” Also featuring in Deck the Halls will be a Christmas visit to Hollywood, with songs from

Home Alone, performed by the NYCoS choirs, and some classic Christmas sing-along numbers for the audience. Children’s Classic Concerts presenter Oliver Cox: “As always at our concerts there will be lots of chances for the audience to get up on their feet and join in. We have a full-on action piece called the 12 Tunes of Christmas, so we recommend plenty of pre-concert mince pies for energy and stamina. And of course there will be some seriously impressive playing from the RSNO amidst all the seasonal silliness. ” Jean-Claude Picard and the RSNO will also perform Glinka’s Overture to Ruslan and Ludmila and Leroy Anderson’s Bugler’s Holiday will provide a high-energy opener. GIGnotes: Children’s Classic Concerts’ Deck the Halls with Owen and Olly will appear at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall on Saturday 6 December at 1.00pm and 3.00pm and at the Usher Hall, Edinburgh on Sunday 7 December at 3.00pm. Tickets are priced from £6 and are available to buy from Glasgow Royal Concert Hall box office (0141 353 8000) or Usher Hall box office (0131 228 1155).

album : 'International Christmas Child'

release date - out now : buy @ http://www.christmaschild.international/order

Young Singers’ Charity Album To Help Vulnerable Children TWO Glasgow-based brothers have launched a fund raising album for an international children’s charity, featuring young independent artists. Most performers on the album – it is out now – are 12 or 13 years old with one as young as ten. Nathan and Matthew Todd from Pollokshields enlisted the youngsters for the 14-track album, “International Christmas Child” they are producing through their social enterprise company, Lux Ventus. The brothers will sell the album in the run-up to Christmas, aiming to raise more than £2,500 for the charity campaign, Operation Christmas Child, part of the international aid charity, Samaritan’s Purse. “Children are naturally compassionate,” said Matthew, 26, a classically trained tenor, choral director and community musician. “In my experience of promoting and supporting young talent from around the world, I find it amazing just how many children have a genuine desire to use their gifts to benefit others.” Nathan, who’s 20, said: “The vision is simple: we want children around the world, to help children around the world, through music. Thirteen artists have contributed to the album from Brazil, France, Norway, Texas, Illinois, Canada, Australia, Romania, Germany, England and Scotland. Though the majority of the artists sing in English, it also features Portuguese, French, Spanish and Romanian. It also features The New Scottish Youth Choir, which has a ten-year-old singer.”

These boxes are then distributed in over 100 countries through national teams of volunteers who are connected locally to the children receiving the gifts.

The “International Christmas Child” album will be distributed globally through major digital providers such as iTunes, Amazon, Google Play, and The charity, Operation Christmas Child started its work in the early 1990s Spotify. A premium digipak CD album is available via the official website. and each November thousands of churches, groups and individual donors www.christmaschild.international prepare and collect shoeboxes filled with toys, school supplies, personal items, and other small gifts. www.luxventus.com

Fireflight

Thumb Music

The debut album from Scottish singer and songwriter Kirsty Law accompanied by musicians Rona Wilkie, Marit Falt, Conrad Molleson and David Milligan with special appearance from Edinburgh songsmith Wounded Knee. Creative and sensitive interpretations of traditional material alongside thoughtful and original self penned work.

Fireflight is the new album from singer, songwriter, guitarist and violinist Rowan Ross from Glasgow, Scotland. The album is a beautiful collection of personal, thoughtprovoking songs, served up in an acoustic heaven featuring some truly wonderful musicianship from a great band.

We are VASQUEZ. We make ‘action-packed’ rock. VASQUEZ was originally three guys who met on Gumtree following a post looking for band members by guitarist/founding member Ciaran Mckenna. The ad lead to him meeting Richard James Iremonger (bass) and Jon Adam (drums) in 2009 and them coming up with the name VASQUEZ; after the hard as nails, heavy machine-gun wielding bad-ass from the film ‘Aliens’. Unfortunately in December 2010 James had to leave the band and that was when Sean Quinn took over on bass duties.

It also includes previously unreleased performances by three of the outstanding guest artists who appeared in the series: Ralph McTell, Alex Glasgow and Pete Scott. His influence on today’s music scene is evidenced by this quote from Alex Turner in a 2010 interview: Yeah, I mean let’s say with that same song [“Cornerstone”] there is this guy called Jake Thackray and he writes these sort of narrations that are kind of humorous. LINSEY AITKEN & KEN CAMPBELL

FIRST CHARGE OF THE LIGHT BRIGADE

Kith & Kin

First Charge Of The Light Brigade

Linsey Aitken & Ken Campbell. One of the best songbooks in contemporary Scots acoustic music. This CD is, in effect, their musical manifesto, a coming together of both their musical journeys, now combined into one together. Combining an unusual blend of instruments and pedigrees plus vocal harmony – self penned and traditional songs and tunes, encompassing a host of subjects, contemporary and historic, from Saint Columba to Dundee Whaling songs... Scot's abroad, chorus songs and world events all with Scot's related themes, all about people with wonderful stories.

First Charge of the Light Brigades self-titled debut album is predominately the work of Yorick Cormack, the main songwriter of former Glasgow alt country band Endrick Brothers. With a sound that rests comfortably amongst many contemporary favourites such as Teenage Fanclub, Wilco and Trashcan Sinatras, it also evokes memories of past luminaries such as Big Star and The Byrds. The album includes a guest performance from Roddy Hart on backing vocals.

JANUARY

The Festival as the UK's most northerly folk festival is regarded a prestigious event for performers, locals and visitors alike. Organised by a voluntary committee (and run by an even bigger pool of volunteers) the Festival prides itself in reaching out to even the most far flung areas of Shetland. Concerts are organised throughout the isles, consisting of some of the best International, British and Shetland music that the world has to offer. In fact, visiting artistes are regularly dumbfounded by the quantity and quality of local musicians that our remote isles have to offer. www.shetlandfolkfestival.com

We offer a wide range of events: music – including classical, jazz and folk, dance, theatre, literary, children’s events, plus the visual arts and films.
