goNORTH
becomes
XpoNorth
to be held in Inverness on 10-11 June 2015 Scotland’s leading creative industries convention is to take on a new name in 2015. XpoNorth will pick up the reins from popular annual Inverness-based creative industries festival, goNORTH. The re-branded festival will take place on Wednesday 10 and Thursday 11 June, 2015, in venues across the Highland capital. A creative melting pot devoted to crafts, publishing, screen and broadcast as well as music, XpoNorth 2015 will be attended by leading creative industry insiders, who will take part in workshops and masterclass sessions over the course of both days. Like its predecessor, XpoNorth is free for the public to attend. It will include the influential new music showcase, which sees music stars of tomorrow take to stages across Inverness on both nights of the festival, as well as the prestigious XpoNorth film showcasing programme, now a key platform for emerging film and documentary makers looking to make their mark in a fiercely competitive arena. XpoNorth Music will be managed by former goNORTH music producer Alex Smith with Ironworks Group directors, Robert Hicks and Caroline Campbell. It has been established as the new Music Industry Network for the Highlands and Islands and will be delivered by Ironworks Group. The 2014 festival showcase schedule in Inverness included much-lauded emerging artists such as Neon Waltz, Baby Strange, Ella The Bird, Hector Bizerk and Broken Records.
GLASGOW : 22 DECEMBER While the MNS team enjoy a short Christmas break our thoughts are with everyone affected by the events in Glasgow's Queen Street and George Square on Monday 22 December - and we wish the injured a speedy recovery. Many will suffer silently from what they witnessed that day, so please make time during a busy festive season for anyone you know who was there.
XpoNorth, is funded by Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and is headed up by former BBC drama producer, Amanda Millen. Millen, a fluent Gaelic speaker and native of Lochaber, said: “This is a very exciting development for the creative industries in Scotland. The original festival started out in 2000 as a platform for musicians from the north of Scotland to be heard by the wider music industry in the Highlands." “XpoNorth has since grown and developed into a unique and much-anticipated event in Scotland's cultural calendar. In 2014, more than 1300 people working in a wide cross-section of creative genres, attended the festival in Inverness, compared to just 500 people in 2011. “Rebranding as XpoNorth offers us the ideal opportunity to tell the world what we do and what we are all about. The new name reflects XpoNorth’s broad scope across the creative industries.

Wryly dubbed by certain media as ‘Scotland’s Gaelic boy band’, Mànran have created a stir on both the Scottish and international music scene since they formed in 2010. With their second album The Test released last year to critical acclaim, BBC ALBA joined the award winning six piece band to witness the thrills and spills of life on the road. During an hour long documentary, produced by Demus-HG Productions, we follow them across a year both at home and abroad and following this programme, there is a chance to see them live in concert recorded earlier this year. 2013 brought their biggest gig yet, supporting their musical heroes Runrig to 40,000 people outside Inverness. After the high of the Runrig gig, the band set off for the first Mànran tour of America starting at the Milwaukee IrishFest, the biggest Irish music festival in the USA. But life on the road is never simple, especially when their piper and fiddle player is double booked!
A trip to Germany offers more new opportunities but also tests the band’s mettle as they struggle with the festival organisers to make sure their set sounds the way it should. It looks like the gig could be a disaster but in true Mànran tradition, the six friends unite and pull off a cracking set winning over a whole new set of German fans - with their merchandise stall subsequently mobbed! A pre-Christmas tour of Uist and Lewis is affected by terrible weather and sees the band stranded on Uist missing other gigs as a result - but resourceful as ever, they put their time to good use as they wait for the weather to improve, arranging an impromptu cèilidh in the local hall to the delight to their island fans! The documentary provides an illuminating insight into one of Gaelic’s leading bands, colourful characters and music that proves that their reputation is well deserved.
Following this programme a special half-hour concert will be screened, produced by Bees Nees Media and recorded at the Fèis na Mara festival in Mallaig in October 2014. In front of a lively crowd, the six-piece demonstrate why they are amongst Scotland's most The American tour sees them debut to an appreciative popular and successful touring and recording musical audience, jam with fellow Scots - The Red Hot Chilli acts. Documentary on Scottish Post-Punk/ Indie music releases teaser trailer Watch The Sound of Young Scotland @ http://youtu.be/0RMZ-6l5_II
The much awaited teaser for the feature length documentary on Scottish Post-Punk/ Indie music by Grant McPhee and Erik Sandberg has been officially released under the Tartan Features banner who are excited to see the buzz this has created. In 2006, Grant McPhee took on the impossible and decided to document the until now only partly told story of Scotland’s thrilling independent music scene. Trips to interview and meet these individuals involved spanned from Edinburgh to Glasgow, from London to New York and back. The guts of nearly 10 years in the making, 'The Sound of Young Scotland' aims to be the definitive document that finally clears any of the ambiguities that may have existed before, and finally put to bed the questions and ambivalence that existed from Fast to Factory via Postcard, 53rd and 3rd and right up to Creation. Early in 2013, Grant – realising he’d amassed a significant yet skeletal guide of material – approached Erik Sandberg, and he came on board in the role of co-producer to help Grant complete what he’d started. The film(s) transcends normal film-making processes: for a start, Erik had never been involved in film making at all, and during these 8 years they met some of the most talented, enigmatic, reclusive, charismatic and downright crazy musical geniuses Scotland has given the world.

The Orchestra took its popular RSNO Christmas Concerts – now firmly ensconced as a traditional seasonal event – to Aberdeen, Dundee, Glasgow and Edinburgh. Led by conductor Christopher Bell, the Orchestra performed Howard Blake’s iconic soundtrack synchronised with the screening of the animated film, with vocal soloists for the famous ballad Walking in the Air drawn from the RSNO’s own Junior Chorus. The concerts also featured well-known festive musical favourites, audience participation, the voices of the RSNO Chorus or Junior Chorus, and a few surprises. Blythe Duff: “It will be a joy to work with the RSNO again. Our paths have crossed many times over the years. I’ve also enjoyed working with the extremely talented conductor Christopher Bell in the past, so I’m very much looking forward to these concerts. The Snowman is such a wonderful tale, and to narrate the story along with the animation and full symphonic backing will be a memorable experience.” Following 2014’s festivities, on Friday 2 January the Orchestra welcomes audiences to a new year at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, for the matinee performance of Handel’s Messiah (3.00pm), with historical performance exponent Laurence Cummings joined onstage by soprano Sophie Bevan, mezzo-soprano Clare Wilkinson, tenor Allan Clayton, baritone George Humphreys and the RSNO Chorus .

NUALA KENNEDY : single : ''Christmas in the Trenches' release date - out now : buy @ http://nualakennedy.bandcamp.com/track/christmas-in-the-trenches This John McCutcheon composition commemorates the Christmas truce held during the First World War, 1914, the 100th year anniversary of which is this year. The Christmas truce was a series of widespread but unofficial ceasefires along the Western Front around Christmas 1914. In the week leading up to the holiday, German and British soldiers crossed trenches to exchange seasonal greetings and talk. In some areas, men from both sides ventured into no man's land on Christmas Eve, to mingle and exchange food and souvenirs. Several meetings ended in carol-singing. The musicians on the single are: Nuala Kennedy, vocals. Jake Charron, guitar. Shane Cook, violin. Pete Harvey, cello. Daniel Lapp, trumpet. The video visuals were done by Ruth Barrie who is an award-winning filmmaker and artist from Edinburgh. The single was produced by Nuala Kennedy and Adam Berg at Manifest Music. www.manifestmusicproductions.com

SOUTHERN TENANT FOLK UNION : album : 'The Chuck Norris Project' release date - 19 January launch : buy online now @ http://www.southerntenantfolkunion.com/audio/ January 2015 sees the release of the sixth Southern Tenant Folk Union album ‘The Chuck Norris Project’, the band’s most ambitious album to date. Conceptually the tracks are all named after different movies from the actor’s career (though have nothing to do with the plots and contain no reference to car chases, explosions or karate chops) with each song taking the title as a starting point to discuss political ideas. Band leader Pat McGarvey came upon the idea in autumn 2012 during the last US presidential election when Mr Norris and his wife released a campaign video urging voters to come out for Mitt Romney saying that a vote for Obama would lead to “a thousand years of darkness”, a statement he felt unhelpful to the debate.

Musically eclectic the album remains an allacoustic affair but takes in influences like 70’s disco, folk and soundtrack music mixing elements of composers like John Carpenter, Gene Clark and Fabio Frizzi. The album also features guest vocals from cult Americana songwriter Mike Ferrio (from the bands Tandy & Good Luck Mountain). With this idea McGarvey and the band began to write and demo material to see if it would work not only as a concept but also as something musically interesting. Subsequently most of the album was written during 2013 but delays to recording meant the sessions didn’t take place until summer 2014. Featuring an expanded sound with orchestrated fiddle, clarinet and cello on top of the band’s regular 5 string banjo, double bass, cajon, mandolin and acoustic guitars the songs each explore different subjects that expand upon the original movie title in unexpected ways. Also influential was the work of 70’s soul composer/arrangers such as Isaac Hayes, J.J. Johnson and Barry White on songs

From social commentary to stories of a more personal nature, ‘A Thing Brand New’ is a collection of songs – the music reflecting the words and words set to the music. This album is Stanley Odd at their most organic, evolved and comfortable in the awkwardness of their own skins.
A mix of folk, celtic, prog, semipsychedelic, SF singer-songwritery produced by band founders Noel Chidwick and Mark Toner, and mastered by Pink Floyd’s engineer, Andy Jackson. There are echoes of ancient battles, stories from Skye and sailing ships in space. nd there’s even a proggy Christmas song in there too - dine on your own heart, Greg Lake!

Fireflight
Thumb Music
The debut album from Scottish singer and songwriter Kirsty Law accompanied by musicians Rona Wilkie, Marit Falt, Conrad Molleson and David Milligan with special appearance from Edinburgh songsmith Wounded Knee. Creative and sensitive interpretations of traditional material alongside thoughtful and original self penned work.
Fireflight is the new album from singer, songwriter, guitarist and violinist Rowan Ross from Glasgow, Scotland. The album is a beautiful collection of personal, thoughtprovoking songs, served up in an acoustic heaven featuring some truly wonderful musicianship from a great band.
We are VASQUEZ. We make ‘action-packed’ rock. VASQUEZ was originally three guys who met on Gumtree following a post looking for band members by guitarist/founding member Ciaran Mckenna. The ad lead to him meeting Richard James Iremonger (bass) and Jon Adam (drums) in 2009 and them coming up with the name VASQUEZ; after the hard as nails, heavy machine-gun wielding bad-ass from the film ‘Aliens’. Unfortunately in December 2010 James had to leave the band and that was when Sean Quinn took over on bass duties.

His influence on today’s music scene is evidenced by this quote from Alex Turner in a 2010 interview: Yeah, I mean let’s say with that same song [“Cornerstone”] there is this guy called Jake Thackray and he writes these sort of narrations that are kind of humorous. But these 10 contemporary songs are, for her, as compelling as any ancient tale. “I’m not turning my back on traditional music,” she explains. “For me, folk songs have the same purpose as the songs I’ve recorded on this album. LINSEY AITKEN & KEN CAMPBELL
FIRST CHARGE OF THE LIGHT BRIGADE
Kith & Kin
First Charge Of The Light Brigade
Linsey Aitken & Ken Campbell. One of the best songbooks in contemporary Scots acoustic music. This CD is, in effect, their musical manifesto, a coming together of both their musical journeys, now combined into one together. Combining an unusual blend of instruments and pedigrees plus vocal harmony – self penned and traditional songs and tunes, encompassing a host of subjects, contemporary and historic, from Saint Columba to Dundee Whaling songs... Scot's abroad, chorus songs and world events all with Scot's related themes, all about people with wonderful stories.
First Charge of the Light Brigades self-titled debut album is predominately the work of Yorick Cormack, the main songwriter of former Glasgow alt country band Endrick Brothers. We offer a wide range of events: music – including classical, jazz and folk, dance, theatre, literary, children’s events, plus the visual arts and films.
