Last year, the MU received horrendous reports of cancelled tours and rearranged flights due to failures in the US work visa processing mechanism. In response, the MU and BU invited industry organisations to form a taskforce to look at how these issues can best be addressed. The taskforce met for the first time in December and are now consulting a wider industry group of musicians and managers who have suffered

The costs both in terms of time and resources make touring in the USA a less viable option for artists." "Alongside the Scottish Government we have lobbied for years for visa applications to be accepted by the US Consulate in Edinburgh but have been met with an unwillingness to change arrangements by the US authorities. Born To Be Wide Announces Self-Help Seminar in Edinburgh on 4 February Born To Be Wide is set to celebrate its twelfth birthday on Thursday 4 February, with a selfhelp seminar especially for managers, artists and labels. The evening, which takes place in Edinburgh’s Electric Circus, is the culmination of years of study and reveals the most – and least – effective approaches to promotion.

producer, Amy Ferguson, photographer Jannica Honey, concert promoter James Bruce and owner of Song, By Toad records Matthew Young. Following the seminar, panellists will play a selection of their favourite music and hang out with the audience. FIND OUT MORE ABOUT THE SPEAKERS Amy Ferguson is a producer on BBC Radio Scotland's arts and culture programme The Janice Forsyth Show, and has produced the station's arts programmes since 2012. Her role involves generating ideas, booking guests, Matthew Young of Song, by Toad Records http://songbytoad.com

The Scotsman, The Sunday Herald, Vogue and Dazed & Confused. She has photographed numerous acts including Scottish artists Frightened Rabbit, Kathryn Joseph and Young Fathers.

“This seminar will help unlock the many techniques within everyone’s grasp,” explains Born To Be Wide founder Olaf Furniss, who will chair the evening. “We guarantee that anyone attending will increase their chances of being covered and do a better job than most PRs.”

Matthew Young abandoned a perfectly respectable career as a design engineer to run Song, by Toad Records full-time. The label is actually an off-shoot of Song, by Toad, a music blog he has been writing since 2004, which slowly expanded to include regular weekly podcasts, video sessions, a radio show, gig nights and, in 2008, the label.

The seminar will cover themes including online promotion, social media, deadlines, creating an effective biography and how to get useable press photographs. Confirmed speakers include BBC Radio Scotland

Bagpipe Amnesty Hits A High Note With First Donations For Scottish Schools A novel charity campaign to find old bagpipes to give new young players a better chance in life has seen its first donation from a surprising source. The Rosevale Tavern in Glasgow's Partick area, a favourite amongst locals, has become the first to donate a set of bagpipes to the Bagpipe Amnesty-Old Pipes for New Learners appeal, which was launched by the Scottish Schools Pipes and Drums Trust on Monday 25th January. After finding the traditional Scottish instrument on the street, the popular pub kept them for some 10 years. When they heard of the Bagpipe Amnesty, and the work of the Trust in giving youngsters to chance to play, they were quick to hand the pipes over to the unique project. Craig Munro, owner of Wallace Bagpipes in Glasgow, has agreed to refurbish – free of charge - all donated bagpipes to ensure they are of the best quality for the children. He was delighted to receive the donation from the Rosevale Tavern.

A musically startling, lyrically angry yet eternally hopeful commentary on our modern world, the album deals with the major themes of our time…war, hunger, inequality, political chicanery, media manipulation - passionately whilst never preachy.

His then band Sgian Dubh played a hippy mix of sequences and home made instruments. Karel also lectured at North Highland College for ten years.

His self-recorded song, “Hey Matthew” was heard by Miles Copeland who signed Karel to IRS Records and the single became a UK Top 5 hit in 1987 and also charted in Europe. In the following years other albums under Karel’s name include a deconstruction of songs by The Doors called “Morrison Café” and also “Subterranean”, an album of songs by Bob Dylan which were treated in the same way. These mostly went to friends and fans and have become collectors’ items.

Recorded with the Racecar project (aka Kevin McGowan and Richard Rogers) in Gozo, the album is available as a 12" vinyl LP or by download and features the iconic cover artwork of Grammy Design Award nominee Mike Ross. Recording in a time of huge world events including the Ebola outbreak, the annexation of Crimea, and the disappearance of Air Malaysia MH370. DAESH had not even been heard of let alone being as now a de facto military force of potentially global proportions and the migrants now flooding Europe were just a trickle.

His first taste of success was with “Armband” b/w “Ghosts, The Subway Strummer”, released on the indie Red Shift label in 1979 and played by John Peel, it had underground success in Europe. Charlie Gillett liked what Karel was doing and then signed him to Oval Records for a short time before Karel moved to the Blueprint label where he recorded and released “Still Life”, his first album which gained excellent reviews. The single “The Eyes Have It” was taken from “Still Life” and had chart success, but Blueprint folded suddenly just as the album was being distributed.

2009 saw the release of “Film Noir”, a limited edition album of 500 signed and numbered copies on a black CD. Featured guest artists include Tilda Swinton, whose family comes from the Scottish Borders, and Paul Roberts (Sniff n the Tears). Karel has worked with and written for a wide range of artists and fellow travellers including Nick Magnus, Jona Lewi, Paul Roberts, Colin Blunstone, Martin Stephenson, Cliff Richard etc as well as taking production duties for various projects. Karel still performs live regularly. Famed for his eighties recordings on Charlie Gillett's Oval Records and, later, Miles Copeland's influential IRS imprint, with hits such as 'The Eyes Have It' and 'Hey Matthew', singer-songwriter Karel Fialka is back with his most striking work yet on “Peace v War”.

Down The Line

Igor Stravinsky: The Rite of Spring

Down The Line is the new album from Glasgow-born singer/ songwriter Johny Corrigan. It is the much-anticipated follow-up to Johny’s acclaimed debut Inchfad Drive, released in 2013. The album consists entirely of self-penned songs and Johny has recruited an impressive line-up of artists for the recording.

This stunning reworking for jazz octet of Igor Stravinsky's masterwork retains all of the themes and most of the exquisite orchestration of the original composition. Improvisational sections appear organically out of Stravinsky's score, allowing band members to be featured as individual soloists as the piece unfolds. With personnel drawn from Scotland, England and Germany, this international group is a world-class ensemble, completely at ease with each other and this incredibly complex music.

Summerland are a hard-gigging band that are delighting ever larger live audiences with their songs of love and loss, longing and rejection. Sophie Armstrong, a shepherdess working in the wilds of Northumberland by day, has an extraordinary voice that soars, yet offers vulnerability and clarity too. At her side stands Gary Shearer, a guitarist of impressive ability whose musical tastes know no bounds. Together they’ve crafted a set list of original, heartfelt songs. This is music that is both contemporary and timeless.

David Altair releases his fourth album entitled ‘Movies’. This album is more beat driven than his last mainly instrumental albums. The album has an ambient and progressive feel to it drawing on inspiration from Boards of Canada. David has released the album for download on Bandcamp. The cover art is by James Abell with fonts by Douglas Mackay.

Shattered Echoes

In Praha

‘Newly minted psychedelic’ band from Glasgow have their debut self-titled EP released on infamous student run record label Electric Honey. Brothers Kris and Pete have encapsulated all that is great about psychedelic, garage, rock and pop music into this record. A perfectly balanced EP.

Foxbeef: Powerful, melodic, hard rock with grunge sensibilities. Foxbeef released their début album Shattered Echoes on the 27 June, 2015. The drums were recorded at TPot Studios in Kinross with Robin Wynn Evans, whose credits include The Manic Street Preachers & The View. The band took on the responsibility to record and produce the rest of the album themselves, working as hard as they could over the course of a year to get the album to a place that reflected the bands personality and energy.

Paul Mellon (Guitars): This is our second single of our debut EP which we aim to release this autumn. In Praha is a song about 2 people falling in love in Prague. The main riff was inspired by Here Comes Your Man by Pixies and the solo is my own very poor imitation of / homage to Nels Cline's solo in Impossible Germany by Wilco. Some have called it catchy.

STEVE GARRETT

IAIN MORRISON

July Moon

Even Song

EAS

July Moon is the second studio album from singersongwriter Alistair Ogilvy - a strong collection of selfpenned material released on his own label and recorded at CHEM19 studios. Alistair was determined to push some genre boundaries while focusing on varying themes of love and loss, poetry and nostalgia. Louis Abbott from Admiral Fallow produced the album and it also features Karen Mathieson from Capercaillie on guest vocals. This new release is sure to gain him new admirers and open up exciting opportunities.

Electric guitarist, re-imagining jazz, folk, rock and choral music. Born in London, Steve Garrett has lived and traveled across the UK, Antartica, Canada and California, and now calls Scotland home. His music springs from a lifetime of influences from diverse sources and performances. Even Song include songs of loss, longing, inspiration by landscape, resolution and hope. The reflective mood mirrors the fading light at the end of the day. Composers range from the 16th Century through folk and the 1980s to contemporary European jazz, with some original compositions. Arrangements bring out the full resonance of the guitar, sometimes backed by loops recorded in real time.

It is never easy for a son to follow in the footsteps of a famous father, so Iain Jnr chose not to. He gave up the world of solo piping and went on his own musical journey. But what he was taught in his formative years is deep within him and this album is a definite attempt at some kind of filtering of the music of his hinterland. There is also a story present, sometimes a rocky one, of a father and son's relationship formed through a rich tradition and an art form that is deeply important to their culture and to both of them personally. There is a mixture of all these elements in this album and Iain Morrison is an artist who is following his own path, wherever that may take him.
