Born To Be Wide to discuss being a 'Producer' at seminar Born To Be Wide returns to Edinburgh’s Electric Circus on Thursday 2 March with a panel focusing on the role of the producer. Confirmed speakers include Dave Eringa, best known for his work with the Manic Street Preachers, manager Claire Southwick and Idlewild guitarist Rod Jones, who co-owns Leith’s Post Electric studio. They will be joined by John McLaughlin, who produced artists including Westlife, Busted and 5ive. The discussion will look at a variety of themes including the relationship between producers and artists, the impact of low-cost technology and why it is one of the most male-dominated areas of the music business. “Producers have an essential role to play in shaping an act’s musical direction and this panel will explore the different approaches,” says Born To Be Wide founder, Olaf Furniss. In addition to the topics outlined, the evening will also cover the different career paths into production, including the rise of university and college courses. Prior to the panel, the latest details for the 'Wide Days' convention programme will be unveiled. The discussion will be followed by socialising to playlists selected by the speakers. Born To Be Wide started life in 2004 as an informal social night to bring together those involved in the Scottish music scene, and soon began attracting interest throughout the UK. Since April 2008 the company has hosted networking evenings, which begin with a discussion panel featuring key figures from the music industry.

Charlie Stewart wins BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician Talented fiddle player Charlie Stewart was named BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician 2017 after a rousing winning performance at Glasgow’s City Halls. Judges were unanimous in awarding the 21 year-old the title, now seen as the premier accolade for young musicians in their field. Each of the six finalists gave a stirring performance, broadcast live on BBC Radio Scotland as part of Celtic Connections. But Charlie, of Glenfarg, Perthshire, had the edge during an evening of superb entertainment. Jeff Zycinski, Head of Radio at BBC Scotland, says: “Charlie is exactly the type of performer we wanted to shine the spotlight on when we launched the search for this year’s winner. His stunning performance was both moving and spirited and really captivated the audience. "Every year, the judging process becomes more difficult with musicians of such a high calibre coming through the ranks. Our six finalists were magnificent, each one stamping their set with true individuality and flair. It was an extremely difficult choice, but Charlie stood out on the night. He will really help to inspire and encourage the next generation of young artists to keep traditional music alive.” Charlie first picked up the fiddle aged nine. He is now working towards a BMus (Jazz), studying Jazz bass with Mario Caribe and fiddle with Marie Feilding at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in Glasgow. Currently playing with two bands, Dosca and Levack, Stewart, Irving, he has performed all over Europe. In 2016 he reached the semi-finals of the BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Awards playing with harpist Becky Hill, and has also won the Danny Kyle award with playing partner Ross Miller.

"Charlie is exactly the type of performer we wanted to shine the spotlight on when we launched the search for this year’s winner" Jeff Zycinski, Head of Radio at BBC Scotland Charlie says: “I'm amazed and so pleased to win. Everyone performed fantastically well in the finals. To be singled out as winner is such an honour. The BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician of the Year is such a wellrespected competition. I'm really excited about the doors it will open.”

Charlie wins a recording session with BBC Scotland and one-year membership to the Musicians Union. All finalists get a one-year membership to the Traditional Music and Song Association of Scotland (TMSA) plus the opportunity to take part in the TMSA’s annual Young Trad Tour. Previous winners of the award who have used their victory as a major springboard to a professional career in music include last year’s winner, concertina virtuoso Mohsen Amini, singer Robyn Stapleton who won in 2014, and talented 2004 winner, multi-instrumentalist Anna Massie. Organised by BBC Radio Scotland, the Young Traditional Musician of The Year competition has been running since 2001, increasing the profile of Scottish traditional music and recognising rising talent in the genre.

Effervescence is the third album from a young jazz orchestra that has grown considerably in strength, depth and ambition, and this studio recording naturally bubbles with their trademark energy and enthusiasm. Yet there is also selfassurance and audacity in the way that solos are taken by so many of these assertive young players.

There are strong measures of bravado, bite and kick under Tommy Smith's sure direction, but It's been fourteen years since the inception of TSYJO, and in that time the orchestra has been a there are also infusions of eloquent expression, warmth, intimacy and feeling. All of these platform for some of the most exciting young jazz musicians in the UK. The present ensemble strengths combine to striking effect on Tam O' Shanter, an imaginative new composition from includes multiple award-winners and critically the pen of trumpeter/composer Sean Gibbs. acclaimed individuals who have already won recognition and approval from fans, Elsewhere, the arranging skills of Ross and Jacob commentators and peers alike. map the way through the minds of Corea, Davis

and Kern, and point into spaces where instrumentalists may roam at leisure. These directions take the musicians into zones where the spirits of ancient Egypt and the icons of the jazz age dwell together on tunes like Davis’ Nefertiti and Corea's Bud Powell. It seems fitting too that Gillespie’s Things to Come should feature here, for TSYJO are all about tomorrow. Dizzy’s headlong rush into the future of jazz perhaps anticipated the interpretive embrace of successive generations, so ably personified by the players on this album. The versatility of this young orchestra is also underscored by the inclusion of the droll, almost casual genius of Corea’s Humpty Dumpty and Kern’s evergreen melody The Way You Look Tonight. Add a smart dash of style with Benny Golson’s Blues March, and the sweet tang of Woody Herman's Apple Honey and you have the recipe for making great jazz. The TSYJO represents much more than the future aspirations of Scottish jazz. The music on Effervescence demonstrates that jazz is an art form that is passed through hands from one generation to another. It may be distilled, matured or replenished on the way, but its resilience is proven in the performances on this CD.

JENNY STURGEON :: album :: 'The Wren and The Salt Air' release date - out now @ https://jennysturgeon.bandcamp.com/ ‘The Wren And The Salt Air’ is a collection of songs and tunes by acclaimed Scottish singer-songwriter Jenny Sturgeon. It was written to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Scottish archipelago of St Kilda becoming a World Heritage Site for its natural features.

‘The Wren And The Salt Air’, commissioned by the National Trust for Scotland (NTS), comprises four new pieces of music inspired by the wildlife and human history of the archipelago. It is a spellbinding collection that effectively captures the unique atmosphere of St Kilda, Britain’s most remote island group. In this EP Jenny explores the connections between birds and music, and woven into the tracks are her field recordings of the birds of St Kilda, as well as those of composer, author and ornithologist Magnus Robb (‘The Sound Approach’). Susan Bain, the St Kilda Site Manager for NTS, says of the project “The St Kildans drew inspiration from the landscape and wildlife around them in order to compose songs and melodies and I’m delighted that Jenny has continued this tradition. As a World Heritage Site St Kilda has value to all of humanity and music can connect and inspire peoples across the globe regardless of language or culture.”

Today, three organisations NTS, Scottish Natural Heritage and the MoD - work in partnership to further a continuing programme of conservation and research on the islands.

The opening title track, ‘The Wren And The Salt Air’, captures the imagery of Jenny’s songwriting and references a walk around Village Bay, the main settlement of crofts, black houses and cleats, abandoned by the native St Kildans in ‘The Wren And The Salt Air’ features Jenny 1930 when the islands were evacuated. Apprenticed into the professional orchestral world, her frustration hits boiling point and she breaks away from the stifling autocracy. Pulse charts her passionate and, sometimes, painful journey of discovery to love and danger in Mexico, step-dancing in Cape Breton, and beyond. With the help of mentors and guides, Campbell charts a path back to her pulse through Scotland’s indigenous music and ‘comes home’. ECHO ARCADIA :: album :: 'Visions of Symmetry' release date - 3 March @ http://echoarcadia.com/music/

Echo Arcadia are six piece Indie band from Edinburgh, Scotland who strive to "make music that will break your heart while your foot taps along." Guitars underpinned by thumping drums, thick bass lines and keys with violins that would break a stone heart, all bearing the weight of heartfelt vocals.

This isn't conventional Pop music, but Echo Arcadia aren't a conventional band. "There’s no box we fit in" explains vocalist and guitarist Leigh, "unless its dodecahedral with a section for Schrodinger’s cat". Visions of Symmetry is clearly a fusion of diverse influences as eighties Pop blends seamlessly into alt folk. Leigh's smooth and beautifully toned vocals are complimented perfectly by Kate's harmonies and every song is characterised by infectious melody, exemplary musicianship and intensely personal lyrics. Leigh says "Visions of symmetry is a journey through a dark time in my life. It deals with loss, depression and the hope that comes with fighting through at the other side. It was described by our long term producer as a more mature and thoughtful album than our previous records, marking our growth in the music we're making. It's cinematic but personal, multi layered like an onion but it probably won't make you cry... it will go well with hotdogs though." Music Musings and Such: “Echo Arcadia are perfectly capable of delivery a two-tonne missile to the guts: they are practically peerless when it comes to providing everyday soundtracks with that extra drop of beauty. Visions of Symmetry is an album that does what it sets out to do: grabs the listener and draws them into something personal, immersive and universal: a mass of contradictions that will not confuse- only inspire and amaze.“ GIGnotes ..... 11th March - Sneaky Petes, Edinburgh

Crossing Borders

Stories Untold is an intimate and inspiring collection of original songs, tackling topics including child soldiers, crime and punishment, loss, and love in its many forms. Early responses have been positive, with five stars from Spiral Earth, and album of the week from Iain Anderson and Celtic Music Radio.

‘Crossing Borders’ was a Celtic Connections commission in 2015 written for a nine piece ensemble and represents Graham's musical journey to date, reflecting on places, people and musical styles that have influenced him and his music. The piece draws on vibrant Scottish, Irish and Cape Breton styles and is written in four sections, each highlighting one of these cultures. It brings together a fusion of traditional and classical styles in his own composition.

This Girl, This Woman is the debut album by 57-yearold singer Jude Adams, who discovered her talent following a life-changing M.E. diagnosis. The album, which Jude describes as soulful pop with a 60s twist, contains 10 tracks all written and sung by Jude, and produced and arranged by musician Janette Mason. Jude comments: " I always loved to sing, and I always did, but behind closed doors. It was only when I got to 50 that I summoned the courage to start singing in public. And then two years later I was diagnosed with M.E. Performing, work and many ways in which I lived my life had to stop or change significantly. It was debilitating, but led to a lot of personal reflection, and ultimately the silver lining of discovering a passion for songwriting." The Poets & The Beats album cd / download / stream Release Date: Out Now

The Poets and the Beats from Musician / producer Paul Armour (ex Seminal Glasgow Surf Pop Band “The Cuban Heels") “The album is very much a beat combo sound. Punchy with grooves using classic retro instruments: Rhodes Wurlitzer & Hammond, vintage amps and guitars. The feel is a mix of styles, melodic & rhythmic. Lyrically quirky with themes of hope and renewal. A recent review from Rock Fm. Scotland described the sound as “Weller-ish” but more refined! It’s all in the ear of the beholder. Enjoy the beats…”

LIZA MULHOLLAND

Born and brought up in Inverness, Liza has been involved in folk music for many years. Although classically trained in piano, her family background of a big Glasgow-Irish clan of musicians and singers on her father's side, and the Gaelic song tradition of her mother's Isle of Lewis heritage, inevitably meant a strong pull towards the folk scene. On her first solo album of original songs and tunes, Fine 'n' Rosy, Liza brings together some top players, including cousin, Rua Macmillan, winner of Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician Of the Year 2009, Alasdair Taylor of the Folk Award-winning band, The Elephant Sessions, and Robin Abbot of The Mystic Shoes. This intimate album comprises reflective ballads and uptempo songs with catchy choruses, complemented by rollicking trad-style tunes and dreamy instrumentals.

The Vivians

Wild Things

The Vivians 10th Anniversary Demos Album #TheVivians10yr - To mark their 10th anniversary of forming, cult indie punk band The Vivians will release a collection of songs spanning their tumultuous career. The self-titled album, digitally released 26th August 2016, will comprise newly mastered unreleased demos and rarities, recorded between 2006 and 2010, accompanied by a new video and artwork. Formed in August 2006, The Vivians dared to dream big and set out to achieve great things. From their humble beginnings in a basement rehearsal room in Edinburgh, through to splitting in April 2010, the band’s story is one of dreams, misguidance and brotherhood.

Wild Things is the first release from East Lothian Alt-Folk singer songwriter Baron Salmon. The four songs are tender tales of moving on, each one showcasing the musicianship, the fine singing and the mature songwriting of their creator. In these songs we also glimpse some of his influences, from Dylan to Bonnie Prince Billy, to Tallest Man on Earth, whilst never losing sight of the exciting new sound that belongs to Baron Salmon.

Rachel Alice Johnson returns with her third single. Since being selected for Creative Scotland’s ‘Verden Studios Demo Project 15’, Rachel has been steadily winning over critics with her contagiously catchy melodies, with her next single ‘Safe Island’ set for release on 27 May. Listen/Watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dqfieiiDuOU Available from: http://apple.co/1V6vYcq www.twitter.com/rachyjohnson www.facebook.com/RachelAliceJohnsonArts

This CD is the culmination of a much earlier celebration, in music and song, of ‘The Wallace’ in 2005, by way of a commission from Alasdair Campbell who was then with The Tolbooth Music and Arts venue in Stirling. This was followed by another commission by Carolyn Paterson in 2014 to celebrate another icon of history of whom we know a good bit more than the former, Robert de Brus of Norman French stock, the 14th C warlord who became King, regaining Scotland’s place as an Independent nation. This orchestrated progression of music ranges from an arrangement of a classic traditional pibroch theme, in its most appropriate animated and rhythmic presentation, to specially composed and arranged pieces. Melodies are presented on a range of pipes in several different keys, overlaid and blended with percussion, clarsach, cello, soprano saxophone, violin, whistle and vocals.
