Golden Opportunity For New Generation Of Musicians Scotland's leading creative industries conference and showcase is looking for the next generation of musicians to showcase their work in front of industry insiders in Inverness on the 7-8 June. The submission window to showcase at this year's XpoNorth has now opened and closes on Saturday 1 April. Last year, around 2,000 delegates flocked to Inverness to listen to panel discussions on the hottest topics in the creative industries and to take part in workshops, masterclasses, and oneto-ones with creative industry insiders. The conference element, which includes the writing pitches and the screening of selected films, will be at Eden Court Theatre. The music showcasing will be held in the evening at venues throughout Inverness city centre. At last year's XpoNorth 66 bands from the Highlands and Islands and beyond played for delegates. Iain Hamilton, HIE’s head of creative industries at HIE, said: “XpoNorth is now firmly established at Scotland’s leading creative industries festival, and we are delighted to be supporting the ambitious growth of the event as an international platform for creative talent.”

The Scottish National Jazz Orchestra directed by Tommy Smith present THE SONGS OF HENRY MANCINI and JOHNNY MANDEL featuring JOE LOCKE and KENNY WASHINGTON The Scottish National Jazz Orchestra (SNJO) directed by Tommy Smith, and featuring special guests Joe Locke (vibes) and Kenny Washington (vocals), are delighted to visit the cinematic era to celebrate the work of Henry Mancini and Johnny Mandel; two distinguished jazz composers who brightened the silver screen with sumptuous soundtracks and timeless songs.

from M*A*S*H. Yet, these men first learned their craft as jazzmen, and bent their love of orchestral jazz to fit the demands of the moving image. Both musicians have created a legacy of the most luxurious, jazz-orientated, and popular music ever written, and its perennial appeal is proof enough of its pedigree.

Joe Locke is one of the world’s leading vibraphone artists, and he finds the perfect partner in Kenny Washington, whose five-octave voice is the perfect foil for Locke’s luminous playing. Their artistry, coupled with the wonderful music of Mancini and Mandel, and the musical elegance of the SNJO, makes for a jazz showcase that oozes class and indulges the senses.

The Scottish National Jazz Orchestra is supported by Creative Scotland.

The SNJO always bring a touch of class to the proceedings, and fans of expressive music can anticipate Mancini with a twist and Mandel with a singular turn of phrase. Great expectations such as these are fully justified by the prospect of specially commissioned new arrangements from Joe Locke, Florian Ross, Geoffrey Keezer, Bill Dobbins, Christian Elsässer and Ryan Cohen. Above all, they can look forward to an evening of wonderful music by great writers and all played by fantastic musicians.

GIGnotes ..... Friday 24 February: Gardyne Theatre, Dundee 01382 434 940 :: Saturday 25 February: Queens Hall, Edinburgh 0131 668 2019 :: Sunday 26 February: Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, Glasgow 0141 332 5057. (All concerts start at 7.30pm but are preceded by pre-performance talk at 6.45 pm)

The music of Henry Mancini has a place in both the history of jazz and in the iconography of the cinema. His reputation would have been sealed with Moon River written for Breakfast at Tiffany’s with Audrey Hepburn, but he went on to repeat that success many times over with his instrumental and vocal versions of https://twitter.com/SNJO2 www.facebook.com/theSNJO film themes.

Johnny Mandel has written some of the finest songs that have been heard both on the big screen, and in the repertoires of people like Johnny Mathis, Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett. Much in demand as a composer, arranger and producer, it was Mandel’s discerning ear for great melody that the recording industry most craved and which is heard in songs like The Shadow of Your Smile, which set a new gold standard for great jazz song writing. Generations of music fans instantly warm to the cool opening bars of Mancini’s Pink Panther, and smile nostalgically whenever they hear Mandel’s theme

ÍMAR :: album :: 'Afterlight' release date - 27 January @ www.imarband.com/shop/

Glasgow’s hottest new folk property, five-piece Ímar have created more than a bit of a stir in little over a year since their formation.

BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician of the Year, a BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award, nine All-Ireland and eight All-Britain titles – the group’s formation embodies a personal reconnection with its members’ formative years, dating back long before their recent camaraderie around Glasgow’s justly celebrated session scene.

Their debut video, unleashed to the world during Celtic Connections 2016, has been viewed in excess of 200,000 times - whilst their touring credits already including the opening set at that year’s Cambridge Folk Festival (technically, the band’s first billed gig - a plaudit surely amongst as rare as they come) and headlining a stage at Belgium’s Dranouter Festival just a week later.

Adam Brown (bodhrán), Adam Rhodes (bouzouki), Mohsen Amini (concertina), Ryan Murphy (uilleann pipes) and Tomás Callister (fiddle) share a strong background in Irish music – although only Murphy actually hails from Ireland; Rhodes and Callister are from the Isle of Man, whilst Amini is a Glasgow native, and Brown originally from Suffolk – and it is these foundations which underpin many of Ímar’s distinctive qualities, in both instrumentation and material.

The Irish and Manx flavoured quintet now present their debut album - Afterlight - released on January 27, 2017, at their official Celtic Connections debut in the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall. This ahead of a UK launch tour in April, and numerous summer festivals including Denmark’s legendary Tønder Festival where they were one of the first six names to be announced for its 2017 outing.

Ímar’s unmistakable synergy, however, centres on the overlapping cultural heritage between Scotland, Ireland and the Isle of Man. All three places once shared the same Gaelic language, and a similar, clearly potent, kinship endures between their musical traditions.

With a line-up featuring members of Mànran, RURA, Talisk and Barrule, and a heavyweight collective haul of top prizes – including the 2016

Edinburgh is very shrewd at hiding its secrets – with Rachel Alice Johnson it is time to kiss and tell." Indie Music Mag: "An independent artist whose voice sounds like it’s coming from deep within her soul, Rachel Johnson has started 2016 strong. ‘Pieces of Me’, out March 4th, is already her second single since the turn of the year, and is as solid a pop slowie as you’re likely to hear this side of Adele." Channel 7a: "If you’re into the likes of Lana Del Rey and Lorde and that very reserved pop sound with engaging yet steely delivery, then this fine Edinburgh singer is one keep your beady eye on." Released on Sony Classical, their latest album, ‘Reflecting the Seasons' is a fresh take on Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, further growing their eclectic fanbase and resulting in recent sold-out performances with The Hague, Tallinn and Omsk Philharmonic Orchestras. For their Glasgow / Edinburgh dates (16+17 Feb), at Cottiers / Queen's Hall respectively,

Tim Kliphuis (violin) combines the perfection of classical and the freedom of gypsy music. Since his debut with Belgian gypsy jazz guitarist Fapy Lafertin he has shared the stage with fiddle star Frankie Gavin, accordion giant Richard Galliano and the late guitar legend, Les Paul. Nigel Clark (guitar) moves easily between the worlds of folk, rock and jazz. He was a member of Scottish group Hue & Cry and collaborated with singers Moya Brennan and Gloria Gaynor, as well as guitarist Jan Akkerman and Scottish jazz legend Carol Kidd. Roy Percy (bass) brings the driving rhythms of New Orleans to the Trio; his unique slap bass techniques are unrivalled in Europe. He is a member of the Classic Jazz Orchestra, Scotland’s premier gypsy jazz group Swing 2016 and worked with reedsmen Forrie Cairns, Alan Barnes and Duke Heitger.

MARCO MENDOZA :: 8-date UK tour tour info @ www.marcomendoza.com

Eight-Date Solo Tour For Bass Legend Marco Mendoza. Rock fans have a chance to see bass legend Marco Mendoza live on stage in the UK this month when he heads back on the road for an eight-date solo tour. Fresh from touring with The Dead Daisies last year, the American bass guitarist who made his name with bands such as Whitesnake and Thin Lizzy will be appearing with his band in gigs from Aberdeen to Southampton. Mendoza has been a leading light in the rock music scene since the 1980s. His first big break came in 1989 when he played on Black Sabbath drummer Bill Ward’s solo album 'Ward One'. After meeting former Thin Lizzy and Whitesnake guitarist John Sykes, Marco joined his band 'Blue Murder' and from that, he went on to become the bassist of the reformed Thin Lizzy when Sykes put the band together with other former Lizzy members. Mendoza played with Thin Lizzy until 2014

during their various tours and also spent a brief period with its follow up band Black Star Riders. In between times, he played with notorious American rocker Ted Nugent’s band, as well as three years with Whitesnake. He has also played session bass on many artists albums, including the Cranberries’ singer Delores O'Riordan; Neal Schon from Journey: Right Said Fred; Whitesnake’s David Coverdale; Lynch Mob; and Tommy Shaw from Styx. As well as his work in rock, Mendoza is also a renowned jazz, funk, soul and pop bass player, all of which are reflected in his live shows. He said: “I love playing to the audiences in the UK, and last year’s tour with The Dead Daisies was crazy with sold out shows everywhere. I am looking forward to seeing some of these fans at my solo shows.” GIGnotes ..... 8 February – Bannermans, Edinburgh 9 February – Tunnels, Aberdeen 10 February – Hard Rock Café, Glasgow 11 February – Think Tank Underground, Newcastle

PYRO :: a two piece alternative rock band from Bathgate MNS meets 17 year olds, Cameron McLean + Connor McCarthy Cameron and Connor are two young West Lothian musicians who are starting to get themselves noticed, with the likes of Jim Gellatly championing the band. They have a busy gigging year ahead and plan to start working the festival circuit this summer too. MNS asked them to give our readers an inside look at what makes them tick .....

"We hooked up at school in November 2015, although we are in different year groups we had a common interest in music. We were originally both in a 4 piece school band, on the day of one of the school concerts they were short on acts so we offered to jam on stage as a duo to fill out the time, afterwards we decided this could really work. Cameron discovered Connor could sing, Connor only agreed if he could do it from behind the kit! We’ve since had hours and hours of writing and experimenting together. To get experience we started playing gigs anywhere that would take us, which is a challenge given our age. We found right from the start the consistent feedback was that our original stuff was the best, so gradually we dropped more and more covers replacing them with originals. We’ve got a great bunch of friends who follow us and support us at gigs, it’s a funny situ when all your mates

are out front singing your songs, its quite bizarre but we're getting to like it. People say we are very confident on stage, we don’t want this to be seen as arrogant, as we’re not, but when we’re on stage we are in the zone, performing is what we do best, we are very much a live band and we can’t wait to play some festivals this year. People ask us regularly if we’d expand from just a 2 piece. We are quite strong in our view that we can make this 2 piece work, we’ve spent a lot of time experimenting, it has taken us a while to get it to a point where we are happy and to be honest we won’t stop experimenting. We are hoping that we won’t have as many fall outs as some other bands may have with double the number of opinions to contend with than we have. We have had some great highlights so far, despite only being together for a short while. Launching our debut video single “Money” at Dreadnought Rock in Bathgate, recording our first video was real fun and opening the main stage at West Lothian's Party in the Park in September last year too was awesome.

recording just a single and spend the rest of our money on getting a good video done for it. We now have two books of songs we’ve written and we are going back into the studio in mid February to record our debut EP. Right now we are all about gigging, we have a 2017 plan which is EP by end of April, get a festival or two under our belt and gig till we fall over to build up our fan base!

We’ve been so pleased with the reaction we’ve had from audiences, we are now looking to spread ourselves further afield and play to bigger and bigger audiences. We’ve been In terms of influences we both agree on Royal described as fearless but we really do have no Blood and Arctic Monkeys as definite influences fear at all in playing, its what we love and and inspiration. Some of the other influences we hopefully that shows in our stage presence, the have in our music and style comes from bands bigger the audience the more exciting and like The Last Shadow Puppets, Wolf Alice, The bigger the buzz." Hunna and Twin Atlantic. Our debut single 'Money' has been our first studio recording, we’ve done a few demos in the last year leading up to this including a couple in Berkley Studios. We recorded Money at Juvat Studios in Edinburgh, which was produced by Jaimie Turnbull. We decided to focus on

Stories Untold

Crossing Borders

To Be Free

Stories Untold is an intimate and inspiring collection of original songs, tackling topics including child soldiers, crime and punishment, loss, and love in its many forms. Early responses have been positive, with five stars from Spiral Earth, and album of the week from Iain Anderson and Celtic Music Radio.

‘Crossing Borders’ was a Celtic Connections commission in 2015 written for a nine piece ensemble and represents Graham's musical journey to date, reflecting on places, people and musical styles that have influenced him and his music. The piece draws on vibrant Scottish, Irish and Cape Breton styles and is written in four sections, each highlighting one of these cultures. It brings together a fusion of traditional and classical styles in his own composition.

To Be Free is an interim project - in between albums number one and two - for Glasgow's Martha L. Healy. Including two originals and two of Martha's favourite country classics, the EP was recorded with her band over a snowy weekend in Glasgow in January 2016.

The Vivians 10th Anniversary Demos Album #TheVivians10yr - To mark their 10th anniversary of forming, cult indie punk band The Vivians will release a collection of songs spanning their tumultuous career. The self-titled album, digitally released 26th August 2016, will comprise newly mastered unreleased demos and rarities, recorded between 2006 and 2010, accompanied by a new video and artwork. Formed in August 2006, The Vivians dared to dream big and set out to achieve great things. From their humble beginnings in a basement rehearsal room in Edinburgh, through to splitting in April 2010, the band’s story is one of dreams, misguidance and brotherhood.

Wild Things is the first release from East Lothian Alt-Folk singer songwriter Baron Salmon. The four songs are tender tales of moving on, each one showcasing the musicianship, the fine singing and the mature songwriting of their creator. In these songs we also glimpse some of his influences, from Dylan to Bonnie Prince Billy, to Tallest Man on Earth, whilst never losing sight of the exciting new sound that belongs to Baron Salmon.

Oceans are an anthemic alternative rock band from Glasgow, Scotland. Influenced by varied range of acts; 30 Seconds To Mars, Explosions In The Sky, Thrice, and U2, Oceans' sound is a mix of powerful, soulful vocals with sing along choruses to soaring, melodic lead guitar, and rhythm with a punch.

scotland's new releases ..... album : single : ep / cd : vinyl : download ALLAN MACDONALD & NEIL JOHNSTONE The Bruce 700

Album - cd - Release Date: Out Now This CD is the culmination of a much earlier celebration, in music and song, of ‘The Wallace’ in 2005, by way of a commission from Alasdair Campbell who was then with The Tolbooth Music and Arts venue in Stirling. This was followed by another commission by Carolyn Paterson in 2014 to celebrate another icon of history of whom we know a good bit more than the former, Robert de Brus of Norman French stock, the 14th C warlord who became King, regaining Scotland’s place as an Independent nation. This orchestrated progression of music ranges from an arrangement of a classic traditional pibroch theme, in its most appropriate animated and rhythmic presentation, to specially composed and arranged pieces. Melodies are presented on a range of pipes in several different keys, overlaid and blended with percussion, clarsach, cello, soprano saxophone, violin, whistle and vocals. Orkney Folk Festival Orkney 25-28 May 2017

One of Scotland’s longest-running folk festivals, celebrating its 35th outing in 2017, the Orkney Folk Festival is one of the most prolific events in the Scottish and UK

folk calendars, and one of the highlights of Orkney’s diary of community events. An entirely voluntary run event, the festival annually attracts artists from all corners of the folk world - from leading international names to up and coming fresh faces - to Stromness, in Orkney’s West Mainland, for four days of concerts, ceilidhs, clubs, sessions, talks and craic. Artists and audiences are welcomed by and into Orkney’s own thriving folk scene, with Orcadian artists providing around two thirds of the festival programme. Line-up announced across December-March, with tickets on sale in April, around six weeks ahead of the event. This is relatively close to the festival itself, as the festival consists of around 35 individually programmed and ticketed events, rather than offering all-inone day or weekend tickets. Artists visiting the festival perform on several occasions, though, offering a number of chances to catch them over the weekend. www.orkneyfolkfestival.com
