The UK’s leading independent music charity officially launched permanent roots in Scotland at the 'Rooted In Scotland' event which was packed with music fans excited about a mix of home-grown talent. HM Scotland, announced a host of pledges for Scotland’s music industry as well as future plans for 2018, including their expanding team with the exciting appointment of Sharon Stephen as Scottish Music Industry Liaison.

The official 'Rooted In Scotland' launch was at the heart of the series of events taking place across Scotland this week. Cities including Edinburgh, Dundee, Dumfries and Perth hosted various fundraising events demonstrating the connectivity of the Scottish music industry. As an independent charity, Help Musicians UK relies on public support through donations, volunteering and fundraising, which is crucial now more than ever due to the ever increasing need and demand for our life-changing services and programmes. Through this generous backing the charity is enabled to carry out its vision, of a world where music thrives.

Help Musicians UK Chief Executive Richard Robinson laid out a series of pledges as part of the 'Rooted In Scotland' launch. Joined on stage by Claire Gevaux, Director of HM Scotland, the charity announced their support of the professional development within the sector with bursaries to Scottish music industry conference Wide Days in April. Idlewild’s set followed an incredible trio of performances from Scottish artists Be Charlotte, Indigo Velvet and SKJØR; all of whom have been supported by Help Musicians in the past. The up and coming bands have received support in a number of ways from the charity, including taking part in Ignite, a programme supported by Help Musicians and run by the Scottish Music Centre to give a platform to up and coming bands, topping up crowd funding campaigns and invitations to showcase gigs, only proving how essential HM Scotland will be to the country’s young musicians. Indigo Velvet addressed the packed crowd, saying: "Thanks so much to Help Musicians for having us and for all the help they've provided our band. Their support is imperative to musicians and we're buzzing to see them launch in Scotland tonight!" Playing a bespoke acoustic set, Idlewild delighted fans by belting out their much-loved tunes during their performance with fans singing

Scottish National Jazz Orchestra Presents Peter & the Wolf and The Carnival of the Animals Peter & the Wolf (Orchestrated by Tommy Smith) and The Carnival of the Animals (Orchestrated by Makoto Ozone) featuring special guests Makoto Ozone piano, Tam Dean Burn actor and with text for ‘Peter and the Wolf’ written by Liz Lochhead

This month, virtuoso pianist Makoto Ozone and leading Scots actor Tam Dean Burn join the SNJO for a cavalcade of family concerts that feature fresh jazz interpretations of two eminently familiar pieces of popular classical music ..... First Prokofiev’s cautionary tale of Peter and the Wolf, with narration in Scots specially written by former Scots Makar, Liz Lochhead, and then Saint-Saëns’ famous Carnival of the Animals given an original spin by composer Makoto Ozone. Peter and the Wolf is widely adored as a children's classic and has been translated into the jazz idiom by Tommy Smith who understands the power of music to tell a story. These original performances promise a wonderful evening of spoken word and descriptive music suitable for all. Tam Dean Burn will expressively narrate Liz Lochhead’s new version of the story, while the SNJO provides vivid musical character sketches to fire imagination and stir emotions.

Makoto Ozone and the SNJO :: www.makotoozone.com

Tam Dean Burn is a respected and versatile Scottish actor familiar to both theatre and TV audiences for his prominent roles in The Cherry Orchard, Stephen Berkoff’s Messiah, and as ‘McCabe’ the River City gangster. In 2017, he appeared with the SNJO at the Edinburgh International Film Festival in a moving tribute to the Scottish poet and playwright Tom McGrath.

luminaries like Gary Burton and Branford Marsalis. He has previously collaborated with the SNJO for Smith’s epic version of Rhapsody in Blue and for Jeunehomme, their enormously successful reinvention of Mozart’s early composition as a contemporary jazz concerto. They are delighted to be reunited once more for this concert series to innovate, educate, and above all, entertain.

Saint-Saëns’ Carnival of the Animals is a dizzying, dazzling, zoological roundabout that might have been built for the benefit of jazz musicians. It is not difficult to imagine the different instruments in the SNJO creating pictures in sound, and conjuring creatures from just a few notes on the page. Quite how it will sound is anybody's guess, but with Makoto Ozone involved, it's guaranteed to be fast, furious and enormous fun.

DEAN OWENS :: album :: 'Southern Wind' out now @ www.atthehelmrecords.bigcartel.com/product/dean-owens-southern-wind-cd Hailed as one of Scotland’s finest singer songwriters, with fans including Irvine Welsh, “Whispering” Bob Harris and Russell Brand, Dean Owens has released his latest album (his seventh) on Brighton’s At The Helm Records. Southern Wind is the title track. Cowritten with Dean’s long term musical collaborator Will Kimbrough, it’s the song that got the whole ball rolling. To mark it, he has released a new video - dark, moody and powerfully evocative, with echoes of Trainspotting, Peaky Blinders and The The’s The Infected.

It was filmed – by Portobello based Waltzer Films - in and around Leith, where Dean grew up, including at Scotland’s oldest boxing club, Leith Victoria AAC Boxing Club (whose former members include world champion Ken Buchanan, as well as Dean himself). You could say it packs a punch! It features a cameo from actor (and fellow Leither) Jamie Sives (Jory Cassel from Game of Thrones, Doctor Who, Clash of the Titans and the upcoming Outlaw King (William Wallace)) as The Boxer. For once, Jamie doesn’t suffer a gruesome death (Jory Cassel’s blade in the eye being a still talked about/once seen never forgotten scene, and his Captain Reynolds in Doctor Who’s Tooth and Claw was killed by an (alien) werewolf (in heroic defence of Queen Victoria). about his Clash of the Titans demise, the better! This time however, he’s the last man standing. Co-writer Will Kimbrough, whose guitar features throughout the song – “a southern blues based swamp stomper, replete with dirty guitar, swirling keys and full-on choral attack” (according to FATEA) - is a highly sought after award-winning musician, whose recent career includes touring as one of Emmylou Harris’s Red Dirt Boys. Southern Wind (the album) is already attracting extensive radio play, superlative-laden reviews (from UK, Holland and Belgium), including **** (“excellent”) from Mojo and Country Music magazines, drawing comparisons with Richard Ashcroft, Little Feat and Ronnie Lane. It has also been “tipped” by this month’s Euro Americana Charts.

and hard to reach. That’s Southern Wind. Southern Wind was again recorded at producer Neilson Hubbard’s Mr Lemons Studio in Nashville, with a host of superb musicians. While it has a distinctive swampy, southern rock, soulful groove, it is also deeply rooted in Dean’s home town and country.

Producer Neilson Hubbard (whose recent clients include John Prine and Jason Isbell, and who is an integral part of the acclaimed Orphan Brigade) says of Dean: Dean is a unique artist. PAUL ANDERSON

AULD NEW HEIDS

Land and Sea

The High Summit

AULD NEW HEIDS - Volume 1

After many years as a well-known face on the band circuit, Bob Leslie’s re-invention of himself as an acoustic performer resulted in two well-received Americana CDs - In a Different World (2010) and Fat Cat (2011) - and a re-launch onto the folk circuit. There, his highly-crafted songs - some serious, some very funny indeed - had audiences showing lively appreciation. However, more and more, Bob found himself drawn to the challenge of writing in a more traditional Scottish vein - a medium, as it turned out, ideal for a musical storyteller.

Paul Anderson from Royal Deeside in Aberdeenshire is one of Scotland’s finest traditional fiddle players and The High Summit is his third album of self penned music and song. Like The Singing Land and Land of the Standing Stones before it, The High Summit celebrates the history, landscape and people of Paul’s beautiful North-East homeland. Joining Paul on The High Summit are a group of exceptional artists, highly respected in their own right and adding their own touch of magic to the album. Shona Donaldson on vocals (Scots Singer of the Year 2009 and first female winner of the Bothy Ballad Champion of Champions), Tony McManus on guitar (worldrenowned Scottish guitarist now based in Canada), Malcolm Jones on guitar and accordion (Runrig), Ale Carr on Cittern (Dreamer’s Circus), Ali Napier on keyboards (Miami Vince and former member of the Dougie MacLean Band) and James Gorgon on percussion (Albany show band and The Cutting Edge).

Land and Sea is the result: twelve narrative songs, their subjects ranging from the Highland Clearances to a Stromness witch who told Walter Scott a few tales. Bob is accompanied by some of the brightest talents on the Scottish folk scene. Available from: www.birnamcdshop.com www.bobleslie.scot

This album embraces all that was great about the golden days of the scottish folk scene in the 1960s/70s. It is a catalogue of some of the best and most popular songs of the time written by folk legends such as Ewan MacColl, Alex Campbell, Hamish Henderson, Matt McGinn, Archie Fisher, Jim McLean and Mary Brookesbank. Also Robert Burns and Sir Walter Scott have a song each on the album. A quartet of four of Scotland’s most experienced performers brings together the vocal talents of brothers IAN and FRASER BRUCE along with the exceptional musical skills of PETE CLARK on fiddle and GREGOR LOWREY on accordion. It has to be said that IAN BRUCE is pretty efficient on guitar, to complete the instrumental section. Available from: www.birnamcdshop.com

Debut EP by 17 year old singer songwriter from Paisley funded by Paisley 2021 City of Culture bid and including four specially selected songs which reflect Lisa's personal and musical journey to date. Lyrics and melodies to express feelings, responses and reactions to people and places encountered.

Putting down a marker for all rock bands in 2017, Thula Borah have produced one of the best records you're likely to hear all year, creating a sound that defies any one genre; switching seamlessly from post-rock, posthardcore and dream-pop to grunge, indie-rock and emo. Indeed, Thula Borah have taken post-hardcore sensibilities and fuzzed out, meaty riffs and amalgamated them with catchy hooks that demand your attention.

The Seas Between Us

Skeletons

This Girl, This Woman

My new album The Seas Between Us is out now! It has twelve old Scots and Gaelic songs, many of which I’ve been singing since I was a little girl. It was recorded and produced by Matheu Watson, who also played several instruments (guitars, fiddle, mandolin, prepared instruments, synth, organs, etc.) and features Fraser Fifield (prepared whistle, lowland pipes, kaval), Jim Rattigan (French horn), Ben Cashell (cello) and Findlay Napier (voice). It was mixed by Leo Abrahams and mastered by Iain Hutchison.

This Girl, This Woman is the debut album by 57-yearHailing from The Shetland Islands, The Revellers are a old singer Jude Adams, who discovered her talent seven-piece juggernaut, that combine fiddle, mandolin following a life-changing M.E. diagnosis. The end result is something which contains 10 tracks all written and sung by Jude, and has been nicknamed by onlookers as ‘Heavy Folk Music’ produced and arranged by musician Janette Mason. or ‘Viking Metal’. The band release their second album Jude comments: " I always loved to sing, and I always did, but behind closed doors. It was only when I got to this autumn – ‘Skeletons’ with Tim Matthew (Lau/ 50 that I summoned the courage to start singing in Mystery Juice) at the helm and cameo appearances public. And then two years later I was diagnosed with from some of Shetland’s finest musicians (including M.E. The Poets and the Beats from Musician / producer Paul Armour (ex Seminal Glasgow Surf Pop Band “The Cuban Heels") “The album is very much a beat combo sound. Punchy with grooves using classic retro instruments: Rhodes Wurlitzer & Hammond, vintage amps and guitars. The feel is a mix of styles, melodic & rhythmic. Lyrically quirky with themes of hope and renewal. A recent review from Rock Fm. Scotland described the sound as “Weller-ish” but more refined! It’s all in the ear of the beholder. Stories Untold

Crossing Borders

To Be Free

Stories Untold is an intimate and inspiring collection of original songs, tackling topics including child soldiers, crime and punishment, loss, and love in its many forms. Early responses have been positive, with five stars from Spiral Earth, and album of the week from Iain Anderson and Celtic Music Radio.

‘Crossing Borders’ was a Celtic Connections commission in 2015 written for a nine piece ensemble and represents Graham's musical journey to date, reflecting on places, people and musical styles that have influenced him and his music. The piece draws on vibrant Scottish, Irish and Cape Breton styles and is written in four sections, each highlighting one of these cultures. It brings together a fusion of traditional and classical styles in his own composition.

To Be Free is an interim project - in between albums number one and two - for Glasgow's Martha L. Healy. Including two originals and two of Martha's favourite country classics, the EP was recorded with her band over a snowy weekend in Glasgow in January 2016.
