Musicians’ Union responds with anger to Midlothian Council's plan to axe music tuition in its schools ..... Flashmob protest to be held outside Dalkeith Council Chambers on 12 February The Musicians’ Union (MU) has expressed its consternation at the announcement by Midlothian Council that it is set to entirely axe all musical instrument tuition in its schools - bar for children who are studying for Higher or National Five exams in the subject.

This will make Midlothian the first local authority in Scotland to take such unwelcome action.

PROTEST:

A musical flash mob will be gathering on Tuesday 12 February outside the council chambers in Dalkeith, to protest Midlothian Council’s recently announced plan to axe music tuition in its schools. The council are due to meet at 11am on 12 February to debate the decision to withdraw all musical instrument tuition in its schools – bar for children who are studying for Higher or National Five exams in the subject. MU members and supporters are urged to join in the protest organised by school students in the region. The flash mob will meet from 10am - 12pm on Tuesday 12 February, at 40-46 Buccleuch Street, Dalkeith, EH22 1DN. Attendees are encouraged to bring along their instruments and play. There will be pupils from local schools playing, as well as support from bands and ensembles in the area. Caroline Sewell, MU Regional Organiser, said: “We are hugely concerned on hearing today’s news from Midlothian Council. This is devastating for the cultural future of the area, the instrumental teachers especially, as threequarters are set to lose their post under these proposals, and of course for the children who are set to lose a vital opportunity to learn an instrument purely because of their postcode. We have grave concerns that this could create a domino effect in other local authorities, some of whom are charging exorbitant amounts of money, which many parents simply cannot afford. Moray Council, for example, has just stated its intent to increase charges to £699 a year, which is the highest in Scotland. This fiscal barrier to learning is not sustainable and creates an environment where the ability to learn an instrument is only reserved for those who can afford it.” Caroline continued: “This creeping eradication of instrumental music provision will not only have a devasting impact on numerous children’s learning, development and opportunity, but also affect the professional opportunities available for the dwindling numbers of our instrumental teachers and ultimately the wider musical and cultural output of Scotland.” Horace Trubridge, MU General Secretary, http://bit.ly/issuu-googleplay

said: “The research we released last year showed how access to music tuition was increasingly becoming the privilege of only those can afford it. The news from Midlothian is therefore extremely disappointing as it will be the young people who are unable to afford music lessons who will be affected the most. Music education should be part of any young person’s broad and balanced curriculum and it is very disappointing to hear that councils are now making these decisions in order to be seen to balance budgets.” Find out more about the protest campaign @

India’s first professional symphony orchestra comes to Edinburgh’s Usher Hall with standout violinist Marat Bisengaliev Founded in 2006, the Symphony Orchestra of India brings together exceptional players from across the Subcontinent – a region with its own vibrant traditions of classical music – together with superb international musicians. Based in Mumbai, it is India’s very first professional symphony orchestra, and has already worked extensively with some of the world’s most renowned soloists and conductors, touring to the best concert halls across the globe. To begin, the Orchestra will take audiences into the fairy realm with the magical orchestral evocations of Weber’s Oberon Overture. The composer’s final opera, it depicts the tale of Oberon, who quarrels with his wife Titania over

whether men or women are faithful to their lovers. The pair can only be reconciled when a couple constant through misfortune can be found. The Overture is a musical standout of the work, with supernatural horns and strings transporting the listener into another realm. The Orchestra’s co-founder and Music Director, Kazakh-born violinist Marat Bisengaliev, joins the players for one of the true wonders of the violin repertoire. Bruch’s soulful First Violin Concerto blends dazzling virtuosity with heartrending melody – it’s not hard to hear why it’s considered the world’s most adored violin concerto. The iconic piece had drawn-out origins, with Bruch being consistently dissatisfied and modifying it “at least half a dozen times” over four years. It finally had its premiere in Bremen in 1968 with the great Joseph Joachim as the soloist, after Bruch sought his comments on the piece during the writing process.

Incisive British conductor Martyn Brabbins – Music Director of English National Opera – brings the concert to an electrifying climax with an exhilarating journey through the Arabian Nights – with tales of Sinbad’s adventures, swashbuckling heroes, tender young love and a cataclysmic shipwreck, all related in RimskyKorsakov’s sensuous Scheherazade. The composer’s early life as a sailor surely played a role in the composition, with his own exploration of the Seven Seas and trips bound to the far east, where the tale of Scheherazade is set, giving Rimsky-Korsakov his own experiences to draw upon. Join them at the Usher Hall for an afternoon of musical adventure and exploration with one of the world’s most exciting young orchestras!

Ideas were flying. I am from so far south that Nashville is eight hours north. Dean is more of a northern man. KIM RICHARDS :: album - 'Leaves That Fly' release date :: out now @ www.kimrichards.co.uk/shop.html 'Leaves That Fly' is the debut album release from Kim Richards. The making of this album was a long-awaited journey. Kim’s first recording was made at seven years of age onto her cassette player (none of those songs made the cut, although a made up character called Tina Bucket is mentioned!).

listening to many different styles of music, including traditional music and some of her earliest memories are of music sessions going on in her house and she has been writing songs for as long as she can remember. Kim became involved in the Feisean movement from aged eight and was a participant of Feis Rois from then until she left school. After which, she became a regular tutor at their residential weeks tutoring whistles, keyboard, ukulele and song writing. She successfully auditioned for the National Centre of Excellence in Traditional Music and spent her 6th school year there receiving specialist tuition from some of the world’s leading Scottish traditional musicians. Kim is a talented artist and designer and she secured a place at one of the most prestigious art schools in the country, The Glasgow School of Art, where she gained a BA (Hons) degree.

The seeds of the songs featured were planted at various stages, including a few days alone in a caravan near Gairloch, whilst studying at art school in Glasgow and even during the recording process itself. In the fullness of time she had written quite a backlog of songs and she wanted them to grow. New opportunities took Kim back to her Highland home of Ullapool in 2015 and inspired once again by the landscape, culture and creativity, she knew it was time to finally record an album. Kim has a strong interest in folk tales and Scottish History and this is evident on this album.

Kim was a member of Glasgow’s Hidden Lane Choir and she performed regularly with them. Kim chose the name 'Leaves that Fly' to evoke She also performed regularly independently and journeys and the passing of time. Every song She has brought about an otherworldly as part of a duo. JOHN GRAHAM & JIM JACK Sae Will We Yet album / cd / Release Date: out now

John Graham and Jim Jack’s debut album features an eclectic mix of many of the favourite songs from their live act with contributions from some of the most talented contemporary songwriters from Scotland and further afield. Graeme Miles’ haunting ‘Eldorado’ hints at a life of missed opportunities while Iain Ingram’s ‘Calton Rose’ and ‘Braes o’ Appin’ are love songs in the Scottish tradition and Steven Clark’s ‘Coming Home’ talks of the plight of the many refugees cast adrift in the world today. Jim King’s ‘West Coast Days’ and ‘Home To The Kyles’ from the pen of Duncan McCrone and Celly Paterson evoke memories of summer days on the Clyde Coast. From earlier days of the folk revival come Ewan MacColl’s ‘Manchester Rambler’ and Matt McGinn’s enigmatic ‘Magic Shadow Show’. John and Jim’s love of Americana is also represented in the rollicking ‘Truck Driving Man’. John and Jim’s act recalls much of the spirit of the folk clubs in the 60s and 70s with plenty of chorus singing and a fair measure of humour thrown in. scotland's new releases ..... album : single : ep / cd : vinyl : download JAMIE MACDONALD & CHRISTIAN GAMAUF The Pipe Slang

JON BUDWORTH Jon Budworth is a singer/songwriter originally from Lancashire but now very much an honorary Yorkshireman living in the bustling market town of Otley. Jon is a relative late-comer to the wonderful world of folk and acoustic music, having spent many years cast adrift in the dark and seedy underbelly of rock’n’roll. Jon changed musical direction in 2010 after happening upon a Youtube video of Richard Thompson playing his beautiful and evocative song Beeswing. There has been no looking back ever since! Jon cites his influences, amongst others, as John Renbourn, Nic Jones and, of course, Richard Thompson.

The musical partnership of the Scottish pipes and fiddle is one that is quintessentially and historically Hebridean. Jamie MacDonald and Christian Gamauf have taken this format and incorporated influences from places such as Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia and Asturias in the north of Spain, putting their own stamp on the music. Jamie and Christian met while living and studying on the Isles of Uist and began playing together at local concerts and events. After travelling to Asturias on a musical and cultural exchange project, along with performances at Ceòl on the Croft, Celtic Connections and Celtic Colours Festivals, the duo started working on their debut album, The Pipe Slang. The album features the traditional music of the Hebrides and includes songs from the Isle of Tiree as well as self-penned material and tunes from further afield.

LINSEY AITKEN & KEN CAMPBELL Shore To Shore album / cd / Release Date: out now

This is our second CD as a duo, with a mixture of new songs and instrumentals, many focussing on our Scottish connections around the world, each with a story, and most of all about people and histories of the past and present. Fortunately, people seem to really like what we do, and ask what kind of music we perform. The answer is not one genre or another, but a blending of everyone and everything we have met along the way. A coming together of both our musical journeys, combined into one together, with elements of our respective musical backgrounds in Celtic, Classical, Traditional, Contemporary Music and all else. But most of all our music is about people, and all those who have influenced us and inspired us along the way.

scotland's new releases ..... album : single : ep / cd : vinyl : download BOB LESLIE

PAUL ANDERSON

AULD NEW HEIDS

Land and Sea

The High Summit

AULD NEW HEIDS - Volume 1

After many years as a well-known face on the band circuit, Bob Leslie’s re-invention of himself as an acoustic performer resulted in two well-received Americana CDs - In a Different World (2010) and Fat Cat (2011) - and a re-launch onto the folk circuit. There, his highly-crafted songs - some serious, some very funny indeed - had audiences showing lively appreciation. However, more and more, Bob found himself drawn to the challenge of writing in a more traditional Scottish vein - a medium, as it turned out, ideal for a musical storyteller.

Paul Anderson from Royal Deeside in Aberdeenshire is one of Scotland’s finest traditional fiddle players and The High Summit is his third album of self penned music and song. Like The Singing Land and Land of the Standing Stones before it, The High Summit celebrates the history, landscape and people of Paul’s beautiful North-East homeland. Joining Paul on The High Summit are a group of exceptional artists, highly respected in their own right and adding their own touch of magic to the album. Shona Donaldson on vocals (Scots Singer of the Year 2009 and first female winner of the Bothy Ballad Champion of Champions), Tony McManus on guitar (worldrenowned Scottish guitarist now based in Canada), Malcolm Jones on guitar and accordion (Runrig), Ale Carr on Cittern (Dreamer’s Circus), Ali Napier on keyboards (Miami Vince and former member of the Dougie MacLean Band) and James Gorgon on percussion (Albany show band and The Cutting Edge).

This album embraces all that was great about the golden days of the scottish folk scene in the 1960s/70s. It is a catalogue of some of the best and most popular songs of the time written by folk legends such as Ewan MacColl, Alex Campbell, Hamish Henderson, Matt McGinn, Archie Fisher, Jim McLean and Mary Brookesbank. Also Robert Burns and Sir Walter Scott have a song each on the album. A quartet of four of Scotland’s most experienced performers brings together the vocal talents of brothers IAN and FRASER BRUCE along with the exceptional musical skills of PETE CLARK on fiddle and GREGOR LOWREY on accordion. It has to be said that IAN BRUCE is pretty efficient on guitar, to complete the instrumental section. Available from: www.birnamcdshop.com
