'Words and Music' brings the music industry to Perth on 14 - 15 March Register for 'Words and Music' online at www.wordsandmusic.co.uk Horsecross Arts has teamed up with Perth College UHI and the Traditional Music Forum to create 'Words and Music', a gathering for musicians and music workers from across Scotland and beyond. Packed with practical tips, networking opportunities, evening gigs and showcases the two-day conference in Perth Concert Hall on Friday 14 and Saturday 15 March aims to inspire, educate and entertain musicians of all genres at all stages of their careers. Music students, early-career musicians, professional players and music industry workers are all expected to flock to the event which features panel discussions with music industry experts including Admiral Fallow, Karine Polwart, Pete Wishart, Findlay Napier, Paul Fenn, Robert Hicks, Patsy Reid, Inner Ear, Comets & Cartwheels, Nicola Meighan, Rod Jones and more to be announced. Subjects covered include fundraising, marketing, legal issues, making recordings, sales and publishing. Debra Salem, talent hub co-ordinator for Horsecross Arts, the creative organisation behind Perth Concert Hall and Perth Theatre said: “At a time when there is unprecedented common ground between various genres of music and industry models, this gathering seems overdue. In addition to expanding creative and cultural common ground across all genres, seismic upheavals in the wider music industry have increasingly drawn the business models of rock and indie musicians closer to their folk and traditional counterparts. The explosion of the Internet has also levelled the playing field across genres in terms of music dissemination, building and maintaining an audience and in managing the careers of musicians. Words and Music not only gives musicians and music workers the opportunity to network and share ideas but it is a mine of practical information and tips indispensable to musicians at any stage of their career.” Up and coming bands from throughout Scotland will be playing at six evening showcase slots taking place in venues across Perth City Centre during the conference. Those interested in attending 'Words and Music' can register online at www.wordsandmusic.co. uk, by calling Horsecross Arts Box Office on 01738 621031 or book in person at Perth Concert Hall, Mill Street, Perth PH1 5HZ. On booking, delegates will be sent a link to sign up for the many sessions on offer including panels, case studies, seminars and one to one’s.

Happy 10th Birthday to The Fallen Angels Club The Fallen Angels Club is now a vital part of the vibrant live music scene in Scotland and it celebrates its 10th anniversary this year. A host of excellent gigs are being lined up that will maintain its reputation for bringing top performers from all over the globe to Scotland. Getting the year of to a great start the Club’s special celebratory show at Celtic Connections in February featuring Gretchen Peters sold out in December.
Sandy Watson. Thousands have attended Kevin's gigs since with roots, rock, folk and pop in the mix from local and international acts from America,Canada, Ireland, England, Wales , Germany and Italy – and of course Scotland. The success at putting on one-off gigs in Glasgow and Edinburgh led to a decision in May, 2007, to launch the Glasgow Americana Festival after the death of Billy Kelly of Big Big Country Festival fame. The hope was that the Glasgow Americana Festival would fill the gap left. Four acts appeared that first year but 12 months later the programme had eight shows in eight different venues across the city – and when the Festival was moved to October in 2010, fifteen acts were in the line-up at five different days over five days. The hugely successful 2013 Festival also featured a special tribute concert on the final night to Gram Parsons, the Grievous Angel, who died 40 years ago this year.

Caleb Major
: EP : 'Best Laid Plans'
release date - 17 February : www.facebook.com/calebmajoruk
Daylight Music Productions (DMP) latest signing, Stephan Durkan AKA Caleb Major is to release his debut EP this month. Glasgow based singer/songwriter Stephen unleashed his alter ego Caleb Major onto the Scottish music scene in late 2012. An eclectic range of influences from David Bowie through to more contemporary artists such as Bon Iver, helps mould a unique lyrical indie folk that is Caleb Major. Away from the usual boy meets girl focus, his carefully crafted songs are performed in his inimitable style capturing moments or experiences from his life. Songs with themes such as coming of age delve into ‘the archives of swallowed youth’ as put in his song ‘Teenage Dream’. Caleb Major’s aim is simple, to produce sincere music that is ageless, endures and does not pander to the industry’s pursuit of blatant commercialism. His song ‘Good Intentions’ has garnered particular attention with its heartfelt lyrics and memorable chorus. It has also received national airplay on Amazing Radio by Jim Gellatly and has been included on various podcasts – such as Netsounds Unsigned. Other musicians often accompany Caleb Major, most notably his sister Emma on fiddle, adding folk tinged riffs and harmonic landscapes, complimenting the raw nature of his voice and guitar. Recently he has supported acts such as Robbie Boyd at King Tuts, We are the Physics at Maggie Mays and the talented Michael Cassidy at the Dunfermline Live Festival. Comparisons with Paul Simon and Neil Young have been made as a result of these performances and the streaming of his demos. Currently working with Garry Boyle (The Depot, Edinburgh) Putting the finishing touches to his debut EP, ‘Best Laid Plans’, Caleb Major is without doubt, an artist to watch in 2014. ‘Best Laid Plans’ will be released on 17 February, with a lunch concert in Glasgow's Glad Cafe on the 18th. DMP have organised a tour to support the release of Best Laid Plans. Dates include Glasgow, Edinburgh, Stirling, Ayr, Gourock, Dunfermline and Kirkcaldy as well as a number of English dates.

Louise Rutkowski : Album : 'Diary of a Lost Girl' release date - 21 February : www.facebook.com/louiserutkowski
Former This Mortal Coil and The Hope Blister vocalist Louise Rutkowski releases “Diary of a Lost Girl”; her first solo album, and the product of a writing partnership with Irvin Duguid. Funded through direct-to-fan platform PledgeMusic, “Diary of a Lost Girl” has been described by its supporters as, “A truly haunting and beautiful album”, “Beautiful, stirring, and alive with emotion”, and “Pure poetic, lovelorn angst at its best”.
Based in London until 2005, she returned to her home town of Glasgow, where she was introduced to musician Irvin Duguid and was struck by the wealth of delicate and beautiful fragments of music that he had written and stored away. Work began, with Louise providing lyrics and co-writing melodies, until the loss of her mother, Mimi, in September 2007, and work ceased for several years. “‘Diary of Lost Girl’ in some respects picks up where ‘Diva’ by Annie Lennox left off, but leans more towards the introspection and atmosphere of The Blue Nile and Canadian songstress Mary Margaret O’Hara, whose album ‘Miss America’ is a major influence, as is Kate Bush” said Louise Rutkowski.” Most definitely music for grown-ups, “Diary of a Lost Girl” covers subjects ranging from obsession, infidelity, and trying to survive in an increasingly confused and confusing world. not so much something that you listen to, as something that makes you feel you have been listened to. A record in sounds and words of the passing of time, during which love endured, relationships deepened, dreams stalled, and 56n sought refuge in the night sky, garden plants, and their neighbourhood. Personal and honest, it will feel familiar not just to audiences who have loved hearing these words on stage, but to new audiences who identify with the 21st century themes and its strong sense of artistic integrity. PAUL ANDERSON Land of the Standing Stones Album : cd / download Release Date: Out Now
Paul Anderson, from the heart of rural Aberdeenshire, is one of Scotland’s most respected traditional musicians. Land of the Standing Stones is really a love letter to Paul’s native Aberdeenshire as all but a couple of the 51 tunes on the album are inspired by the people, landscape and history of the North-East of Scotland. The music on the album has all been composed by Paul himself and at 70 minutes in length, it’s a considerable achievement. The music, though rooted in the traditional Scots fiddle idiom, is also contemporary in style. He has been ably supported in this by a superb group of musicians, which includes Shona Donaldson (Scots singer of the year 2009), Swedish citern genius Ale Carr, Ali Napier (Dougie MacLean band) and Scottish acting star Kevin McKidd on guitar and vocals. This debut album, Second Fiddle, is a collection of melodic songs and instrumentals from Scottish singer/songwriter Rowan Ross. The tracks were written at various points in his life. His songs show a great deal of clarity and depth. The title "Second Fiddle" came from one of the songs on the album, and is also a reference to the two violins he used in the recordings : one dark in colour and tone, and the other light. Rowan is joined by a host of musicians on this album, including Alyn Cosker, Angus Lyon, Gillian Fleetwood, Konrad Wiszniewski, Louis Abbot, Maeve MacKinnon, Rick Standley, Rosie Townhill and Sam West.
"The Voice" Season 3 runner-up Terry McDermott and his band the Bonfires have returned with another stunning, sweeping Britrock ballad, co-written with Todd Burman of Australia's Juke Kartel. (Todd also worked on Terry's first post-"Voice" single, "Pictures," which went to number one on the iTunes rock chart.) And judging by the new video for the track, Terry hasn't lost the feeling at all, perfectly suits the dreamy song...and yes, it does rock. (Lyndsey Parker / Rolling Stone)
Esotero is the 5th release by multiinstrumentalist composer, Fraser Fifield. Recorded as a live studio session in summer 2013, it features Fraser with award winning guitarist and long term collaborator Graeme Stephen. Seamless live electronics place atmospheric texture around their original melodies and improvisations. A unique sound.
