Born To Be Wide has announced its third 'Off The Record' day, following the successful launch in October 2013 and a recent sell-out in Kirkcaldy. The event takes place on Saturday 1 March at Platform, Easterhouse, Glasgow and features workshops for young musicians and those interested in working in the music business.

Delivered in partnership with Platform, participating speakers include: Jim Gellatly (Clyde 1), Olaf Furniss (Born To Be Wide Director/The Scotsman), Michael Lambert (Born To Be Wide Director/artist manager), Hannah Currie (promoter, MILK Glasgow), Stuart Stenhouse (EmuBands), Keith McIvor (Optimo), Jamie Gilmour (artist manager) and Jennifer McGlone (Glow Arts). Admission is £2 (including lunch) and tickets must be bought in advance from www. offtherecord.me, or in person from the Platform box office at The Bridge, 1000 Westerhouse Road, Glasgow G34 9JW. A parental consent form is required from attendees aged under 18 which can be downloaded. Also included in the price is a free release worth £25, via Scotland's leading digital distribution company EmuBands. Supported by the Scottish Government’s Youth Music Initiative (YMI), which is administered by Creative Scotland, Off The Record is open to anyone aged between 14-25, with key industry figures providing essential advice on subjects including releasing, promotion, earning money from music and organising/getting gigs.

Twelve up and coming acts from around Scotland have been selected to join a line up of top Scottish musicians in a series of free showcase gigs in venues around Perth on Friday 14 and Saturday 15 March.
"We were delighted firstly with the number of applications we received from artists to perform at Words and Music and, more importantly with the sheer quality and diversity of talent that we listened to during the selection process. The depth, breadth and excellence of the submissions confirmed to us just how necessary Words and Music is to the development of emerging Scottish artists, both in providing a platform to perform and also in terms of career and business advice and mentoring. One of the most pleasing aspects was the amount of great acts from Perthshire or with connections to the county and it's wonderful to be able to offer so many places to these musicians in what is probably the most important grassroots music event to ever take place in the area." The Pathhead Music Collective are delighted to host the slow but steady revival of the Scottish Stepdance Company who will be joined by Cera Impala and The New Prohibition on Friday 28 February at Pathhead Village Hall.

For the uninitiated, Stepdance is an old Scottish percussive dance form which was extremely popular until the Clearances. In Victorian times it was cleaned up and developed into modern Highland Dancing and the advent of village halls & social dancing contributed further to its demise. Tiree Music Festival has announced that entries for TMF Unsigned, backed by the voice of new music in Scotland, Jim Gellatly, are now open. The competition sees Scottish unsigned bands and musicians battle it out to play the main stage of the award winning festival, which takes place on 18-20 July. Acts have up until the 10 March to enter TMF Unsigned by emailing a track, video or link to unsigned@tireemusicfestival.co.uk Heading for a rapid sell-out following the announcement of Julie Fowlis as the first confirmed act to play (with only 200 tickets left as this edition was published). Getting their 2014 season, and 10th anniversary year properly underway, Kevin Morris's The Fallen Angel's Club presents Anaïs Mitchell, who has just been named a winner at this year’s BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, at Glasgow's St Andrew’s In The Square on 28 February. Anaïs took the Best Traditional Track title for “Willie of Winsbury” with friend and collaborator, Jefferson Hamer. The song is from her fourth album, “Child Ballads”, which was also nominated in the Best Album category. fRoots magazine also shortlisted her for the Album of the Year award: Anaïs is an American singer-songwriter and musician who clearly deserves the description: "Queen of modern folk music." “Child Ballads” is a collection of traditional songs from the British Isles, named after their collector, Francis James Child. From Charlottesville, Virginia, three brothers are at the heart of the five-piece Sons of Bill whose third album, Sirens, has gathered glowing reviews with some observers saying they put the rock into country rock. Released earlier this year, the album debuted at No 12 on Billboard among new artistes. Their live shows mix acoustic ballads and sweaty stage dives and they have shared the stage with bands ranging from My Morning Jacket to the Drive-By Truckers and they have also played coveted slots at Bonnaroo, ACL Fest and SXSW. Fans of Uncle Tupelo, Wilco and Richmond Fontaine will love The Sons of Bill. Celebrate Spring with The Scottish Traditional Music Players on 2 March Scottish traditional afternoon in the Pentlands with musicians from Scotland’s national orchestra
Kirknewton Stables in the Pentlands will host a performance by The Scottish Traditional Music Players, on the afternoon of Sunday 2 March, for a concert of words and music to celebrate the coming of spring. Two musicians from the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, (RSNO), Associate Principal Oboe Katy MacKintosh and First Violin Alan John, are joined by pianist Graeme MacKintosh for a programme drawing on the rich heritage of Scotland’s music and literature. Music includes compositions from Niel Gow, William Marshall, James Scott Skinner, and the songs of Robert Burns. The afternoon will also feature readings from the works of Robert Louis Stevenson, Queen Victoria and Lewis Grassic Gibbon. Daughter and father team Katy and Graeme have been playing music together for the past twenty years. In 2012 they visited Shetland to perform a series of concerts with local traditional musicians. Following the success of the duo’s concerts of Scottish music in 2013 - recitals at St Cuthbert’s Church, Edinburgh and at Kinlochard Village in the Trossachs - they now present a completely new programme, with the addition of violinist Alan. This is a beautiful and thought-provoking concert, with some surprising juxtapositions. A treat for all with a love of Scotland’s music, from musicians highly experienced in this repertoire. John Hearne has lived in Scotland since 1970 after studying at the University College of Wales where he gained a First Class Honours degree and a Masters degree. For a time he taught music in Iceland, and for 17 years was a lecturer at Aberdeen College of Education.
He was the first Chairman of the Scottish Society of Composers, and was the Chairman of the Scottish Music Advisory Committee of the BBC from 1986 to 1990. He is now a freelance composer, singer and conductor, and was Chairman of Gordon Forum for the Arts in Aberdeenshire for three years.
Captain Scott's ship is now preserved at Discovery Point, Dundee, and Dundee Symphony Orchestra gave the world premiere of Hearne's overture Into Uncharted Seas in the Caird Hall, exactly 100 years after the ship was launched from Dundee on its maiden voyage to the Antarctic.
Notable commissions include a Trumpet Concerto for Nigel Boddice and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, and a big Festival Fanfare for the opening ceremony of Aberdeen International Youth Festival. His wind band overture De Profundis was commissioned for Aberdeen University's 500th anniversary, and he completed a commission for the Hebrides Ensemble, and a cantata for the 150th anniversary of St Margaret's School for Girls, Aberdeen, which was performed by the whole school. His suite for Brass and Percussion, The Four Horsemen, was premiered at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. It was voted the best new work heard on the Fringe that year and the composer received the Festival City Radio Trophy from Radio Forth. This work has since been performed many times by a number of different groups, including the BBC Scottish Brass Ensemble and The Wallace Collection.
The Inverurie Choral Society performed another new commission composed and conducted by John. This was The Ben, a cantata for soprano and baritone soloists, children's chorus, SATB chorus, and instruments. Playtime at The Outhouse for musicians in Edinburgh Edinburgh-based saxophonist Martin Kershaw and guitarist Graeme Stephen are launching a new musician-run music night called Playtime at The Outhouse in the city’s Broughton Street Lane on 20 March. The plan is to run weekly sessions presenting new compositions in the Outhouse’s intimate loft setting and the first two sessions will feature Kershaw and Stephen with Mario Caribe (bass) and Tom Bancroft (drums). “Since the demise of Henry’s Jazz Cellar as a regular hub where musicians could try out new ideas and formats in a listening environment, it’s been very hard to find a sympathetic venue,” says Kershaw, who as well as fronting his own projects is a stalwart of the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra’s saxophone section. “We’re hoping to create the right setting that will give a platform for the creativity that we know exists on the scene both locally and nationally.” Martin Kershaw

Singer/songwriter Andy Gallagher was born in California to Mexican/Scottish parents. Growing up between America and the UK, Andy is a truly transatlantic talent! Andy was influenced by the likes of Dinosaur Jr, Neil Young, Violent Femmes, Soul Asylum and Sebadoh, and as he began song writing and performing he soon came to the attention of veteran music manager Darren Brown. Andy barely had time to re-string his guitar, before he recorded his debut album Hope Shines Through and was opening for touring bands such Dinosaur Jr, Langhorne Slim, The Tracie Hunter Band and Dom Brown (Duran Duran). He was also given the honour of opening for the Violent Femmes on their 25th Anniversary Tour in Ireland.

A Brazilian percussionist, Allysson Velez travels to Huntly, Scotland. There he is touched by the very first contact with the Scottish Ceilidh and impressed by the common musical language of the north east of Scotland and the north east of Brazil. Here he worked with a special selection of local Scottish musicians and a musician from West Africa, who has settled in the area, to transform an encounter into a musical flow of exchanging gifts and virtues. This album, NordEste/ NorthEast, documents that exchange of Scottish and Brazillian music, which also inaugurates a new word, Ceilidhcatu, merging the words Ceilidh (a traditional Gaelic social gathering, which usually involves playing music and dancing) and Maracatu (a performance genre found in Pernambuco state, in northeastern Brazil), from which the musicians have taken their name. Shetland 1-4 May The Festival as the UK's most northerly folk festival is regarded a prestigious event for performers, locals and visitors alike. Organised by a voluntary committee (and run by an even bigger pool of volunteers) the Festival prides itself in reaching out to even the most far flung areas of Shetland. Concerts are organised throughout the isles, consisting of some of the best International, British and Shetland music that the world has to offer. Scotland's premier electronic music festival Electric Frog returns this May Bank Holiday weekend with Electric Frog & Pressure Riverside Festival. Organisers have today revealed plans to add a second day and return to the spectacular Riverside Museum site for the second consecutive year for the 2014 instalment, with what’s set to be their biggest event yet.
