CalMac Culture’s search for new music talent launches for 2015
Your chance to play HebCelt, Tiree or Best of the West Check out http://www.calmac.co.uk/music.htm for full details on how to enter, prizes and terms and conditions
Two rising music stars were discovered last year when the UK’s largest ferry network operator launched the CalMac Culture Music competition. Such was the success of this inaugural contest, Caledonian MacBrayne has made the decision to not only repeat it, but, in consultation with Scotland’s top festival organisers, to expand the range of available prizes. Last year, the eight competition finalists battled it out at King Tut’s in Glasgow for two gig slots at island festivals, with Sophie Rogers and Leanne Smith winning through in the end to appear at Stornoway’s HebCelt and Tiree Music Festival respectively. This year’s competition, which sees the slots available rise from two to three, launched this week and also brings with it the inclusion of bands for the first time. And CalMac is excited to announce the addition of Best of the West Festival, which takes place at Inveraray. King Tut’s will once again provide the venue for what will be a memorable gig night for the selected finalists, who will compete in front of a packed audience and the judges panel – made up of the organisers of these three great festivals and King Tut’s manager Craig Johnston. So, for all those original singer song writers out there, could this be your year to burst onto the music scene?
www.musicplus.org.uk
www.hittheroad.org.uk
If you think you or your band have what it takes to impress both the judges and a festival crowd, you have until Sunday 8 March to give it your best shot. “Last year’s competition was totally new for us and it created a fantastic buzz,” said Cathy Craig, CalMac’s Commercial Director.

POCIÓN DE FE : single : 'Al Infierno b/w La Vibora' release date - 6 March : https://soundcloud.com/pociondefe
Poción de Fe is a new sevenpiece band brewing a spicy mix of Afrobeat, Caribbean rhythms, Cuban salsa, and African mambo. Original songs, with tight funky grooves and irresistible horn licks, feature Spanish lyrics which blend the Afrobeat tradition of social and political consciousness with Cuban-style wordplay.
was developed to explore his Latin roots, with songs he writes and sings in Spanish.
Poción de Fe debuted their unique sound at the 2014 Edinburgh Schrieberg explains the ethos behind his Fringe Festival in the new band: award-winning venue The Jazz Bar. They “I knew I wanted to sing in Spanish and create a have also been recording and blend of Afrobeat and Latin funk, and fortunately touring, including an appearance at the London the guys were happy and excited to jump International Arts Festival. A short tour in Mar/ aboard. They are phenomenal musicians who Apr 2015 sees them travelling almost the length have taken the project in exciting directions” of the UK from London to Inverness via Oxford, Leeds, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aviemore. Poción de Fe release their first single on 6th March 2015 - Al Infierno b/w La Vibora - a taster from their forthcoming album. Al Infierno is an upbeat song which calls out all those who engage in various geopolitical and societal misdeeds. The chorus 'Al infierno contigo' means 'To hell with you'. La Vibora is inspired by Dominican bachata music, using the basic rhythm while not quite following the usual instrumental conventions of the genre. It speaks of “the viper of austerity” that hides in the grass of society and eats the most vulnerable people, the vocal woven through a seductive sinuous groove.
Based in Edinburgh, and founded in June 2014 by Colombian-American singer/guitarist Felipe Schrieberg, the band is an exhilarating mix of Scottish and international musicians, drawn from popular and respected bands including the Katet, Orkestra del Sol and the Horndog Brass Band. Members include Italian drummer Davide Rinaldi, American bassist Jarad Gatton, Orcadian saxophonist Tom Pickles, Edinburgh trombonist Matthew Hawke, guitarist Jed Potts and percussionist Simon Gibb.

BEST GIRL ATHLETE : album : 'Carve Every Word' release date - 2 March : https://soundcloud.com/best-girl-athlete
Best Girl Athlete, aka Katie Buchan, releases her debut album Carve Every Word on 2 March 2015 via Fitlike Records. At just 15 years old, Katie has dreams like any other teenager, but possesses a talent far beyond her tender years. The songbird, who resides in Aberdeen, exhibits an effortless yet enchanting voice aligned to a burgeoning talent for song writing which elevates her natural potential to even greater heights.
Not content to simply sing her musician father Charley Buchan’s songs, Katie has begun to establish herself as a mature singer-songwriter in her own right. Katie possesses a voice which sounds wise beyond its years as her earthy, ethereal tone flows beautifully from the speakers
warmly enveloping the listener. Her vocals are accomplished to the point that they could easily sit alongside seasoned singer songwriters such as Aimee Mann, Laura Marling and Feist, as she constructs emotional vignettes with a laid back and elegant Americana edge. Where most artists use their debut album to fine tune their sound, Katie has produced something special on her first attempt - an art that can take many of her contemporaries years to hone. The tender vocals and whimsical music is no more apparent on album tracks such as ‘Leave It All Behind’ and ‘All That’ where Best Girl Athlete produces some of her most exquisite tracks as the chorus is left floating around your head for days. While ‘Talk’ is so well written it could easily be mistaken for an Ellie Goulding single - Katie’s vocals radiate and her lyrics impress, as soothing strings and piano elevate the music to new levels. Carve Every Word is an emotionally charged and accomplished debut that finds Best Girl Athlete imposing herself as a serious talent. Released in the United States under the Minty Fresh label and with a forthcoming American tour in support, the album will have its UK release via Fitlike Records.

David Knowles is a distinctive vocalist and songwriter based in Edinburgh, with a growing international social media following. Lyrically, David draws inspiration from classic writers including William Blake, Oscar Wilde, Jack Kerouac and Hunter Thompson. Years spent travelling the world (including Latin America, Asia and Europe) have provided a rich vein of inspiration for his songwriting and familiarity with a range of exotic instruments including the Didjeridoo, African Djembe drum and far eastern Dulcimer. With a depth and range that bely his relatively tender years, David’s voice has drawn favourable comparisons to such iconic performers as Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder and Grammy award-winning country singer Ray Lamontagne. With a busy schedule of live performances already planned, 2015 promises to be a big year for David Knowles including the launch of debut album “Footsteps” on 9 March. Gràs (Grace)
Wasting Time
Yesteryear
Famed Gaelic songstress Mairi MacInnes presents Gràs (Grace), her first new album in 13 years! Some of the songs have been written by Mairi; others have been adapted from ancient Gaelic songs and prayers. Some take the form of mouth music, waulking and clapping songs, and hymns. Mairi’s fans have been patiently waiting for Gràs for over ten years, but it will be worth the wait.
Based in West Lothian, Scotland, The Phantoms formed in May 2012, quickly winning an army of fans with their huge sound and infectious on-stage energy. Influenced by Kasabian, Royal Blood, Catfish and the Bottlemen and Arctic Monkeys, their new single 'Wasting Time' is a perfect example of the sound that has earned The Phantoms the reputation as one of Scotland's most exciting prospects.
Uplifting vocals, intricate guitars, weaving violin melodies, solid bass lines and foot-stomping drum beats to form a unique take on Scottish folk music. "Yesteryear" combines Little Kingdom's cheerful folk with darker, alternative roots, giving a small taste of the band's vast palette of sounds.

Low Sun, Long Shadow
We are VASQUEZ. We make ‘action-packed’ rock. VASQUEZ was originally three guys who met on Gumtree following a post looking for band members by guitarist/founding member Ciaran Mckenna. The ad lead to him meeting Richard James Iremonger (bass) and Jon Adam (drums) in 2009 and them coming up with the name VASQUEZ; after the hard as nails, heavy machine-gun wielding bad-ass from the film ‘Aliens’. Unfortunately in December 2010 James had to leave the band and that was when Sean Quinn took over on bass duties.
Edinburgh's Instrumental Rock band ' We Came From The North' return with the release of their highly anticipated follow up 5 track EP 'Low Sun, Long Shadow'.Their sound has been described as emotional, gripping and very very loud. "Low Sun, Long Shadow" promises to be an enticing and superbly captivating listen.
