Scotland's awardwinning music convention, Wide Days, returns to Edinburgh on 22-23 April. Following the success of the new format trialed in 2015, the conference and first three showcases will take place in the Pleasance venue on Friday. The Saturday - open to all professional ticket holders - will focus on networking activities, including a guided coach tour, a special Ted-style talk, BBQ and lowexertion sports. Early-bird passes will be available at a discounted rate of £65 and rise to £80 on 15 January. Moreover, a limited number of one-day passes for Friday’s events are available for students, emerging musicians and individuals starting out in the business, for £25. An under 18s ticket costs £18 and covers the conference and first three showcases. “This year’s Wide Days was the most successful since we launched in 2010, with record attendances for the conference, the showcases and the special networking activities,” says founder Olaf Furniss, adding that the event provides a great environment for both professionals, and emerging musical and business talent, to connect.

Anda Union – an Inner Mongolian 9 piece band - to tour Scotland The brilliant 9-piece band Anda Union from Inner Mongolia first toured the UK in 2013 and stole the show everywhere. The band members all grew up in families 'with the music', several of whom still live in the traditional Mongolian way, and came together at music college in Hohhot, their capital city. There they were able to integrate traditional forms - like the now-famous throat singing - into creating a sound uniquely and mysteriously Mongolian but with a strong appeal to a western sensibility. Promoted by Edinburgh’s Stoneyport Associates, January and February sees them touring the length and breadth of UK, with 22 dates from London to Inverness, with five Scottish shows including Glasgow’s prestigious Celtic Connections festival, and St Brides Centre, Edinburgh as well as Perth, Inverness and Dumfries. "Their opening number alone could have supplanted an entire old-fashioned BBC sound effects department…" Scotsman (Jim Gilchrist) "extraordinarily rich vocal and string harmonies, masterly flute and percussion and general joie de vivre... easily in the front rank..." Herald (Rob Adams) "fine singers and instrumentalists...complex and gently dramatic..." Guardian

would have been proud of. Keenly aware of the threat to the Grasslands and their age old Mongolian culture, Anda Union are driven by their fight for the survival of this endangered way of life, by keeping the essence of the music alive. Anda Union combine different traditions and styles of music from all over Inner and Outer Mongolia, developing an innovation previously unheard of. The very existence of a music group like Anda Union is new to Inner Mongolia. They are part of a musical movement that is finding inspiration in old and forgotten songs, drawing on a repertoire of magical music that had all but disappeared during China’s recent tumultuous past. As a group they hold on to the essence of Mongolian music whilst creating a form of music that is new, and extremely accessible to western ears. Singer Nars says: “Most of the band members have been playing together since childhood. As adults, we studied professional vocals and instruments together. We are like a family. Fifteen years ago, Anda Union was forged and we haven’t looked back.” The group describe themselves as music gatherers, digging deep into Mongol traditions and unearthing forgotten music. They are on a mission to stimulate their culture and re-engage young Mongols, many of who no longer to speak their own language. Anda means a blood brother or sister. For Mongolians an Anda is more important than a birth brother as you choose a person to become an Anda, a lifelong blood brother. Anda Union is a brotherhood of Andas.

Andy Gunn is The Blues by Rob Ellen

When the movie of Andy Gunn’s life is made as I believe it surely will, it should open with the words “Andy Gunn is The Blues” It is impossible to talk about Inverness based guitarist songwriter Gunn’s life and music without telling the back story of his health issues. Here is the story board – Born a haemophiliac, Andy was under doctor’s orders from the onset and like all kids his life was full of scrapes & bumps, unlike other kids every graze on the football park and fall from a tree brought with it life threatening problems. A guitar brought into the house by his parents at an early age would prove to be, not for the last time, a saviour to Andy. His wayward energy effectively and productively channelled. Soon he’d back tracked through his mother’s rock’n’roll collection and alighted on the Blues masters like Lightning Hopkins and Muddy Waters, with the music of his native Highlands all around him, his musical road was opening up before him. A precocious then prodigious talent blossomed, even by the time he was ready to leave school he had signed a worldwide recording contract with Pointblank, Virgin’s blues label, with his school band Jumpin’ The Gunn.

he answered in typically accepting and downplaying fashion ” Yes I’ve had cancer twice but I’ve only had one heart attack, and I don’t count it, that was just a particularly bad day”

Andy subsequently became the leading voice of protest for justice for his fellow Factor 8 Travelling to Memphis, he rubbed shoulders sufferers and his music energies for the next and exchanged riffs with Al Green’s rhythm 5 years or so would go hand in had with this section and Pops Staples to name a few… a struggle, 3 self produced albums entitled high soon to be followed by an inevitable low “Flip Flop Kinetics”, “Bonar Bridge Sessions”, (it’s The Blues and its Andy Gunn “Regional Variations” and constant gigging remember!). Point Blank refused point blank between specialist treatments here and in to follow up the critical appeal and acclaim of London fuelled his blues, rock and folk music the CD, Andy returned home. and infused a sound brimming with soul, struggle and syncopation. After decompressing from that disappointment, back in Scotland more high times gradually ensued, he then released an album with Provogue and played alongside many acts including The Sensational Alex Harvey Band, with members of Gary Moore’s Midnight Blues Band, with Martin Stephenson (who remains a pivotal supporter and will enter the story again) and toured with 4 time British Blues best harp player Errol Linton.

However just when success on all fronts was looking inevitable for Andy!! You guessed it, that unwanted bed fellow “disaster” struck again, in the guise of a violent breakdown, which saw his well documented incarceration at her majesties pleasure and to his doctor’s recommendation.

Enter the afore mentioned Martin Stephenson who sought Andy out, brought him recording He then went off in search of America on a equipment and valuable expertise in trail of discovery where he met and jammed producing great albums, they set about with many great musicians in the big music producing a CD remotely with support of centers such as New York, Chicago, Memphis, their fraternity of musicians around the Nashville and New Orleans… sparking the country, and the experience of these lost comment “Damn, I didn’t know they picked years manifested in his current record cotton in Scotland!”.. all the time, soaking up “Miracle Of Healing” and stands testament to the inspiration and walking the avenues of that fact and the eminent power of Andy his musical heroes. Gunn’s spirit and his spirited playing.

It was during his childhood that Andy fell foul of the Factor 8 blood debacle & fiasco and became infected by blood bought from the States by the National Health Service in turn infected with Hep C and HIV Aids and other impurities.

Quite apart from all of that Andy has supported Buddy Guy at the Queen’s Hall in Edinburgh, jammed with Albert Collins in London and backed up Geno Washington at the first Belladrum Tartan Heart Festival.

Down The Line

Igor Stravinsky: The Rite of Spring Open Airs Album cd / download Release Date: Out Now

Album cd / download Release Date: Out Now

Down The Line is the new album from Glasgow-born singer/ songwriter Johny Corrigan. It is the much-anticipated follow-up to Johny’s acclaimed debut Inchfad Drive, released in 2013. The album consists entirely of self-penned songs and Johny has recruited an impressive line-up of artists for the recording.

This stunning reworking for jazz octet of Igor Stravinsky's masterwork retains all of the themes and most of the exquisite orchestration of the original composition. Improvisational sections appear organically out of Stravinsky's score, allowing band members to be featured as individual soloists as the piece unfolds. With personnel drawn from Scotland, England and Germany, this international group is a world-class ensemble, completely at ease with each other and this incredibly complex music.

Open Airs is a musical log book of travels in Norway, Ireland and Scotland. In 2011, Norwegian musician and composer Kyrre Slind quite his job, bought a banjo and hit the road on a Vespa 125 scooter, heading for Ireland. Four years later - rich in new experiences - he releases his first solo album, recorded in Scotland and Norway. The melodies describe landscapes, impressions and personalities encountered when travelling the great north and its islands.

Remember To Forget is my second release, which I feel reflects the ups and downs I have been through since my last release A Place for Sorrow. With this record I had a different perspective with writing and recording and I hope you enjoy listening it to as much as I enjoyed putting it all together. Thank you for your continued support; it is forever and always appreciated. Shattered Echoes

In Praha

July Moon

Foxbeef: Powerful, melodic, hard rock with grunge sensibilities. Foxbeef released their début album Shattered Echoes on the 27 June, 2015. The drums were recorded at TPot Studios in Kinross with Robin Wynn Evans, whose credits include The Manic Street Preachers & The View. The band took on the responsibility to record and produce the rest of the album themselves, working as hard as they could over the course of a year to get the album to a place that reflected the bands personality and energy.

Paul Mellon (Guitars): This is our second single of our debut EP which we aim to release this autumn. In Praha is a song about 2 people falling in love in Prague. The main riff was inspired by Here Comes Your Man by Pixies and the solo is my own very poor imitation of / homage to Nels Cline's solo in Impossible Germany by Wilco. Some have called it catchy.

July Moon is the second studio album from singersongwriter Alistair Ogilvy - a strong collection of selfpenned material released on his own label and recorded at CHEM19 studios. Alistair was determined to push some genre boundaries while focusing on varying themes of love and loss, poetry and nostalgia. Louis Abbott from Admiral Fallow produced the album and it also features Karen Mathieson from Capercaillie on guest vocals. This new release is sure to gain him new admirers and open up exciting opportunities.

Tracks released in 2014 caught the media's attention 'bound for bigger and better things' - The Scotsman 'damn, this is good - must get more from her' Crack in the Road. IAIN MORRISON

TIM DALLING

Even Song

EAS

Eve's Bonie Squad

Electric guitarist, re-imagining jazz, folk, rock and choral music. Born in London, Steve Garrett has lived and traveled across the UK, Antartica, Canada and California, and now calls Scotland home. His music springs from a lifetime of influences from diverse sources and performances. Even Song include songs of loss, longing, inspiration by landscape, resolution and hope. The reflective mood mirrors the fading light at the end of the day. Composers range from the 16th Century through folk and the 1980s to contemporary European jazz, with some original compositions. Arrangements bring out the full resonance of the guitar, sometimes backed by loops recorded in real time.

It is never easy for a son to follow in the footsteps of a famous father, so Iain Jnr chose not to. He gave up the world of solo piping and went on his own musical journey. But what he was taught in his formative years is deep within him and this album is a definite attempt at some kind of filtering of the music of his hinterland. There is also a story present, sometimes a rocky one, of a father and son's relationship formed through a rich tradition and an art form that is deeply important to their culture and to both of them personally. There is a mixture of all these elements in this album and Iain Morrison is an artist who is following his own path, wherever that may take him.

Tim is a song-writer and performer who has been described as a cross between Ivor Cutler and Randy Newman. And now that The New Rope String Band is calling it a day Tim is ready for a new solo career. This album is a collection of songs that celebrate a joyful and urgent humanity recorder with guitarist Ian Carr and bassist Neil Harland. Audiences are once again warming to a man with a very special gift who entertains with a passion, superlative musicianship - and humour.
