Wide Days Music Convention Confirms Dates And PRS Foundation Partnership Award-winning music convention, Wide Days, will take place in Edinburgh on 21-22 April, with showcasing acts set to benefit from additional support thanks to a partnership with the PRS Foundation. The conference component, hosted on the first day, returns to the world’s oldest student union building, Teviot Row House, with the themes and speakers due to be announced later this month. Showcases will run consecutively across several key venues throughout the evening of 21 April. Day two will continue to focus on informal networking, with a guided tour, barbecue and other activities. “Wide Days is a great opportunity to combine business with pleasure, and we look forward to building on the event’s international appeal,” says convention founder Olaf Furniss. “The PRS Foundation partnership will enable us to provide more mentoring for the showcasing artists before and after the event, and allow us to further develop as a springboard for talent across all genres.”

Mike Ritchie's Celtic Music Radio Show Poll Success has him runner-up to BBC's Bob Harris Show! A Celtic Music Radio 95FM programme has enjoyed an end-of-year poll success. The Mike Ritchie On Sunday Show secured a runners-up slot – behind the BBC’s legendary Bob Harris, no less – for Best Radio Show in a readers’ vote run by the influential Americana-UK website. The website editor commented: “Mike’s show continues to impress.” Mike’s programme goes out live every Sunday between 4 and 6 pm and features a mix of Americana, alt.country, roots, bluegrass and singer/songwriters.
Within that, though, we're not really that fussy to be honest.
Chairman of the charity-status, Glasgowbased station’s board of directors, Alex Jenkins, said: “It’s great that a communitybased station run by volunteers gets recognition in this manner.
Anything goes - Celtic (obviously!), traditional, folk, Blues, jazz, acoustic, Country, Bluegrass, Classical, World, contemporary singer-songwriters and even a wee bit Rock n Roll.
“For one of our shows to be voted by the public into a runner-up position to a national broadcaster and a BBC broadcast giant like Bob Harris, is no mean feat.
Celtic Music Radio @ Celtic Connections
“Mike works hard to prepare a show that mixes up-to-date releases with many favourites and he introduces new acts as well, including many from Scotland. “His show is well researched and his knowledge and love of the music he picks to play is clear to the growing numbers of people listening in.
Celtic Music Radio is set to deliver an unrivalled festival of music during this year’s Celtic Connections. This is the 12th year in a row the community-based radio station will play a prominent part in Connections, which starts on January 19 and runs through to February 5.
Over the 17 days – in addition to its normal 24-hour music programme schedule – Celtic Music Radio will broadcast for 136 hours from “All of us at Celtic Music Radio are really Connections and feature more than 70 live pleased with the poll result.” acts on 95FM and DAB across Glasgow and Mike said: “It’s terrific that Celtic Music Radio worldwide via its website. is so highly thought of – I’m surprised but Its Connections’ programmes – on air chuffed to get a mention in such noteworthy between 11 am and 5 pm daily – will include company. up-close-and-personal sessions from “I really enjoy going on air and being part of international acts as well the best musicians the station’s team. They gave me a chance to Glasgow and other parts of the country have broadcast and I’m so pleased they did: they to offer. are a terrific bunch who do what they do for the love of the music.”
Celtic Music Radio broadcasts to Greater Glasgow on 95FM and across the world in stereo at www.celticmusicradio.net The station exists to promote music produced by Celtic musicians, singers and songwriters.

MÀNRAN :: album :: 'An Dà Là (The Two Days)' release date - 20 January @ www.manran.co.uk
After three and half years’ nearconstant touring, Mànran are back with a storming new album. The title, ‘An Dà Là’ (‘The Two Days’), comes from a Gaelic expression for great change and change is very much the central theme of the album.
This exhibits itself in myriad forms ranging from an old Gaelic song on the changes wrought by the Highland Clearances through to the title track of the album: a bilingual attempt to deal with the precarious nature of today’s everchanging world, including a call for compassion and humanity directed at President-Elect Donald Trump in his mother’s native language of Gaelic.
The title also reflects the changes the band has undergone over the years since Mànran’s last studio album and, musically, these changes are most evident in the increased power, intricacy and maturity of the instrumental tracks as well as the strength of the new voices featured in the songs. In three years that have seen Mànran tour regularly throughout Scotland, the UK, mainland Europe and as far as the US, Australia and South Korea, it’s clear that the band haven’t been travelling around with their fingers in their ears and these worldwide influences can be heard in much of the new music. Indeed, much of the album was composed, rehearsed and gigged on the road before being recorded in Glasgow during rare moments of downtime. This ‘roadtesting’ method has undoubtedly resulted in Mànran’s strongest, most coherent and boldest album to date. An Dà Là - The Two Days is due to be launched at a headline show in Glasgow’s legendary Barrowland Ballroom, on 20th January, as part of 2017’s Celtic Connections festival.

TINDERBOX ORCHESTRA :: single :: 'Quetzalcoatl' release date - 30 January @ www.tinderboxcollective.org by a full-length LP on 4 June. Scotland’s premier youth music orchestra are proud to present A triumph of unsettling chamber-prog, the track came out of a Tinderbox workshop series called their debut single ‘Creative Sessions’ that brought together ‘Quetzalcoatl’ (pron. Ket-zal-ko-at- composers and bands from all manner of backgrounds for one-off orchestral al), due out on 30 January. The single marks the first release from collaborations. For composer Frazer Knox it was the first opportunity he’d had to write for an the Tinderbox Orchestra, a orchestra, and it empowered the young musician to burst out of a ferociously talented collective of period of writers block. 13-25 year olds, based in Frazer says: “Hearing it in Edinburgh; it will be followed up real life in front of me through
an orchestra was an overwhelming moment of pride, where I suddenly felt like perhaps I could call myself a composer,
because it’s real music, and it sounds like real music.” That journey from frustration to satisfaction is written into the bones of this single, which propels itself along a tightrope of tension and release for 5 high-octane minutes. ‘Quetzalcoatl’ takes its name from the feathered-serpent god of Mesoamerican religion; this composite deity – also the name of a Final Fantasy character – is an apt and powerful image for a track that bristles with threat and typifies the orchestra’s omnivorous approach to genre.
Auditions - 21 January Tinderbox are building an almighty orchestra to perform the album at the Hidden Door Festival in June, so get involved! Courses are available for young musicians aged 11 - 25, beginner to advanced, and the next audition is on 21 January.

Throughout the album, Angela’s stunning vocal harmonies soar, a newly found and defining quality in her individual style. Although influences of country, soul and pop all join together in Down to the River, Angela’s island roots are never far beneath the surface. John Saich, former Capercaillie bass player and guitarist, and Wild Biscuit co-producer Mags Russell have created multi-layered arrangements on tracks such as Don’t Say Hi, Yesteryear and the title track Down to the River reminiscent of many of the classic singer-songwriter albums; on others such as Wax Doll and Closing Doors a contemporary acoustic approach puts the emotion up close and in the moment. Album - cd - Release Date: Out Now This CD is the culmination of a much earlier celebration, in music and song, of ‘The Wallace’ in 2005, by way of a commission from Alasdair Campbell who was then with The Tolbooth Music and Arts venue in Stirling. This was followed by another commission by Carolyn Paterson in 2014 to celebrate another icon of history of whom we know a good bit more than the former, Robert de Brus of Norman French stock, the 14th C warlord who became King, regaining Scotland’s place as an Independent nation. This orchestrated progression of music ranges from an arrangement of a classic traditional pibroch theme, in its most appropriate animated and rhythmic presentation, to specially composed and arranged pieces. Melodies are presented on a range of pipes in several different keys, overlaid and blended with percussion, clarsach, cello, soprano saxophone, violin, whistle and vocals.
