Hogmanay musical hero King Creosote to perform with The Big Project in Edinburgh's Broomhouse! After Edinburgh welcomed in the New Year with a stellar cast of homegrown talent, one act in particular is causing a real stir for the children and young people at The BIG Project, in the city's Broomhouse area. No stranger to the big stage, Mercury Nominee King Creosote (a.k.a. Kenny Anderson) is all set to be the first of The BIG Project’s musical heroes to perform with them, on a wee stage - in the local school gym hall!
performing alongside, and with, The BIG Project Youth Choir. Leonie Bell, Director of Creative Development at Creative Scotland, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for the children and young people of Broomhouse to see and perform in front of friends and family alongside one of Scotland’s musical stars. Every year the YMI supports over 350 projects across Scotland, bringing high quality music making opportunities into communities. Taking part in creative activities can make a real difference to the lives of young people by allowing them to shine and express themselves.” The BIG Project is a youth and children’s charity, based in Broomhouse, Edinburgh, supporting children and young people to learn, achieve, have fun and feel good about themselves.
No stranger to big stages and screens themselves, in the past few years, the members of The BIG Project Youth Choir have had their performance of O Flower Of Scotland beamed globally during the London 2012 Olympic Opening Ceremony, and performed alongside Emeli Sande as part of Edinburgh’s Olympic Torch Relay celebrations. Music Director Kim Edgar explained:
King Creosote: Scottish singer/songwriter Kenny Anderson is King Creosote. Anderson has released two dozen releases on his own label, Fence, a collective assembled along with brothers Een (aka Pip Dylan) and Gordon (aka Lone Pigeon). In 2003 Domino pressed the first proper album Kenny and Beth's Musakal Boatrides, followed in 2005 by Rocket D.I.Y. Released in 2006, KC Rules OK included liner notes from famed Scottish crime writer Ian Rankin, and garnered both regional and “That’s where the idea of the “BIG Heroes” project began - the choir have international acclaim. ADAM HOLMES
Eddi Reader's Vagabond by Reveal Records was recorded by Mark Freegard with a cast of well chosen musicians and friends eager to play their part in this, most captivating, deeply personal yet universal sounding album
The Scottish Borders 'String Jam Club' is absolutely thrilled to be collaborating with the Borders Amnesty International Group to organise a 'PROTEST SONG COMPETITION' for young Borderers aged 11-18 years. This is a very exciting opportunity for young songwriters throughout the area and they want to encourage as many as possible to take part. Amnesty International is a worldwide organisation dedicated to campaigning for human rights throughout the world. The judging will be a two-tiered process. Initially, entrants must submit a performance of their song onto a 'judges view only' YouTube channel. A shortlist of four finalists, selected by the initial judging panel, will then perform at the Grand Final Concert (Saturday 7 June) to choose the winners. Finalists will be competing to win a first prize of £500 and two runner-up prizes of £100 each in front of a professional panel of judges on the night - headed by none other than the legendary iconic protest artist, JULIE FELIX, who will also be performing a set on the night.
COMPETITION TIMELINE
www.adamholmesandtheembers.com Adam is a singer/songwriter of rare and timeless potency, combining John Martyn's strum and sting with a slice of Paolo Nutini soul. This his breathtaking debut album, produced by the legendary John Wood : MNS Hot Rating

CALUM STEWART& HEIKKI BOURGAULT
Your song can be about anything that matters to you personally or an issue that you feel strongly about: bullying, cruelty to animals, school, women's rights, gay rights, racism, the environment, poverty, someone who’s inspired you, hunger, homelessness, peace, freedom and so many other things – the list is endless, you choose! "The word protest suggests an angry reaction against the system. Yet some of the most powerful pieces of music which are now 'protest songs' are stories of personal struggle against injustice." Amnesty International www.calumheikki.com
Following from their successful debut album Scotland's Calum and Heikki from Brittany forge their powerful instrumental duo sound with 'Hunters Moon' showcasing two leading instrumentalists in full flight
Some entry tips ..... Please note that it is the song itself which is being judged, not the performance, so your video entry does not have to be perfectly polished! The judges will be listening to the lyrics, the melody and the message - not judging you by your performance alone. The organisers understand that some songwriters are not always performers themselves, and if this is the case you can select other people to perform the song for you. It is the songwriter (or songwriters if there are co-writers) who will win the prize, and it’s up to you how you share the money. The organisers do however encourage the songwriter(s) to perform their own song if possible and give it your all, as that way the music comes straight from the heart!
Above all, protest songs can provoke us, unsettle and amaze us, move us, challenge and completely inspire us. Music can change the world. So write your very own protest song and let your voice be heard! The 'String Jam Club' said it was honoured to have Julie Felix both performing and heading the Final Judging Panel on 7 June - www.juliefelix.com

Mark Morriss in Scotland with some old friends (could it be the Bluetones?) Mark Morriss lead The Bluetones from 1993 right up until September 2011, and he is currently pursuing a solo career. He released his solo debut album, Memory Muscle, in May 2008 and this is being followed up early this year by A Flash oF Darkness, which was exclusively released last year by Pledge Recordings and has a full release coming up on Acid Jazz. He hits the tarmac again this February and March to play both new songs, and old, and is joined by a few special guests, as well as some old friends as he states, “If you know what I mean”. This is very exciting news for fans of his Bluetones career, both past and present. MUSIC NEWS Scotland is wondering if this could in effect be a Bluetones line-up, which would make these 'must see' gigs! If you're not familiar with them The Bluetones were a bit of a big thing during their history. Formed in 1993 they had a wonderful run of success, not only here in the UK but on a worldwide stage. Speaking of success in the UK, how does 13 Top 40 singles and 3 Top 10 albums sound? The first of these albums,
that allowed them to easily fill the slot that had been opened by the demise of the Stone Roses. They were part of the soundtrack to everyones lives during the era of Cool Britannia. The chance to immerse yourself in their audio mastery has to be taken, and you have this chance. The first of these nights is on Friday, 28 February as part of the exciting Glasgow’s 'Dirty Weekender' festival where Mark will be playing at The Admiral on Waterloo Street with a host of other acts. Saturday the 1 March sees him in the capital at Edinburgh’s Electric Circus with support from Ded Rabbit and Stonehouse Violets.
Expecting To Fly, entered the UK Album Charts at No1 and contained the MASSIVE singles “Bluetonic” and “Slight Return”. The Vocals of Mark Morriss are instantly recognisable from the Britpop era. His voice is unique, and it and some of his lyrics are embedded into our minds. Combine that with a sound that the Bluetones had, it was described as falling halfway between The Stone Roses and Oasis and you had a recipe for great things. Their sound was graceful, yet robust. 100% guitar pop with just a tinge of psychedelia and
Then on the 2 March we see a return to Kilmarnock's Bakers Niteclub in John Finnie Street where Mark is joined again by Ded Rabbit, Stonehouse Violets and also Kilmarnock’s own The Heeby Jeebys. With these three varied venues and the chance to see such stalwarts of the 90‘s British music scene once more gracing our stages you really have no excuse to not get involved. The Wel opens second rehearsal and creative space in Edinburgh Edinburgh events company Woosh Entertainments have opened a second room at their rehearsal and creative facility 'The Wel'. The Wel now consists of two high quality, multipurpose spaces designed to cater for creative people in music, drama, photography - in fact any creative area that can be accommodated. The addition of second room, a flexible 34m2 space, now means Woosh Entertainments can provide more availability to professional and semi-professional musicians as well as for tuition, recording and photography. Both rooms are also ideal for small-scale theatre rehearsals and castings or auditions. The PA systems, microphones and guitar amps are regularly serviced and cleaned and the drum kits are well maintained and frequently tuned. These things matter to musicians, so they matter to The Wel. The two fresh air ventilated rooms come equipped with - Electrovoice PA, Allen & Heath mixing desk, 3 Sennheiser Vocal microphones, 4 DI Boxes, 2 Marshall Guitar Amps, 1 Hartke Bass Amp and a Mapex Meridian 6-piece Drum Kit. There are many little extras including free parking, free Wifi, spares and accessories for sale plus a social space with microwave and a fridge stocked with juice, water and snacks. The Wel boasts an impressive and diverse list of clients. One look at the Testimonials page on the website shows why The Wel is now regarded as one of the best rehearsal spaces in Edinburgh. Woosh Entertainments Director Keith Easton is delighted with the addition of a second space he said: "Since opening our first room in February 2012 we have built a large and loyal client list. Everyone comments that we have clean facilities and that all the equipment is always in good working order, especially the drum kits. These things really matter to bands and musicians so they matter to us. We enjoyed a really busy August during The Edinburgh Festivals and this confirmed that we needed more space to match the demand. We'd also seen an increase in the use of the space as a photography studio, so we were keen to create a second flexible space that isn't just for use by bands. Even when the one room was fully booked we were delighted that so many people kept coming back to us when it was free, so it's great to now be in the position to accommodate more users." Located just off Bonnington Road in the Leith area of Edinburgh, with free parking, The Wel is waiting to welcome you.

Edinburgh based six piece roots and folk collective tour UK behind their acclaimed chart topping fifth album 2013 saw the release of the fifth Southern Tenant Folk Union album ‘Hello Cold Goodbye Sun’, a collection of new and original material that has gained 4 star reviews across the music press (Independent, Scotland On Sunday, Daily Record, Q Magazine & many more) and was positioned at number one in the Americana UK Chart. Following the release the band have played sold out tours in the UK and Ireland and the live reviews of their concert performances picked up on their ‘tight delivery and soaring, gorgeous harmonies’ saying that ‘STFU are a must see live band combining a rich blend of musical talent with a high octane Appalachian style’ and perform their own brand of ‘thrilling traditional musicianship’. So another album like its four predecessors that bears repeated listening, one that has collected disparate ideas, musical influences and themes from many different places. Those themes and the atmosphere present result in high quality roots music that isn’t ready to stop progressing along it’s own subtle pathway, each song propelling the album and the band forward. Steps taken (large and small) toward making the acoustic, folk and roots scene among the most experimental and ambitious in popular music today. Now as well as touring the band are currently in preproduction for their sixth album with an exciting new concept all of its own.

In Eddi’s own words: “I have been on a journey with this set of recordings. Two years ago, I began writing and playing with ideas on John’s new piano. Well, I say “new” – it’s a secondhand, small Zender piano. I’d never heard of that make, but when we got it tuned, the fella said that they use this kind of piano to train the piano tuning students. Often, if they got bad marks, the saying goes that they had to ‘return to Zender’. After I kicked him out of my house for that terrible joke, I sat down and began falling for its sweet tone and I attempted to learn my way around it.

only to bring myself back to land. The good news is John is walking the road to recovery and will get better. No fear or doubt! Buíochas le Dia! The recording sessions progressed throughout January 2013, (it’s the best time to grab everyone as most are at Glasgow’s Celtic Connections festival) and they were amazing. We all squeezed into Mark Freegard’s Kyoti studio with Roy Dodds (drums) and Ewen Vernal (double bass) creating an engine for Boo Hewerdine’s steady rhythms (guitar) to steer through the songs with me (singing) sometimes playing guitar or piano, Ian Carr (guitar) soloing and Alan Kelly (accordion) floating in and out of everything. I recorded around 26 songs and had to choose 12 as 26 won’t fit on a CD. This new album was supposed to be 12 songs that flowed well together but I couldn’t bear to leave some off. So I got John to choose. When I protested he would say, “Those songs are on the next record”. We compromised on 14.”
The guys in the Edinburgh music shop who sold it to me told me that Tom Waits had been in the shop earlier and sat playing on it for a half hour then bought another one. Mr Waits was playing Edinburgh that night, so it seemed plausible. It’s a lovely piano nonetheless. It took me all the winter of that year to become acquainted with the idea that I was writing and that I should start recording. I did, but only the odd day here and there. 2012 was a wonderful and weird one. John and I got married on 8 June. With that we are both blissful, but in other things we were challenged. John developed an incurable illness and we were distracted by health issues and family troubles. I took a while to steady my feet about all of that. Then by the end of the year, I knew I needed to pull the fellas together and try recording live – if

Esotero
Album : cd / download Release Date: Out Now This debut album, Second Fiddle, is a collection of melodic songs and instrumentals from Scottish singer/songwriter Rowan Ross. The tracks were written at various points in his life. His songs show a great deal of clarity and depth. The title "Second Fiddle" came from one of the songs on the album, and is also a reference to the two violins he used in the recordings : one dark in colour and tone, and the other light. Rowan is joined by a host of musicians on this album, including Alyn Cosker, Angus Lyon, Gillian Fleetwood, Konrad Wiszniewski, Louis Abbot, Maeve MacKinnon, Rick Standley, Rosie Townhill and Sam West.
"The Voice" Season 3 runner-up Terry McDermott and his band the Bonfires have returned with another stunning, sweeping Britrock ballad, co-written with Todd Burman of Australia's Juke Kartel. (Todd also worked on Terry's first post-"Voice" single, "Pictures," which went to number one on the iTunes rock chart.) And judging by the new video for the track, Terry hasn't lost the feeling at all, perfectly suits the dreamy song...and yes, it does rock. (Lyndsey Parker / Rolling Stone)

NordEste /NorthEast Album : cd / download Release Date: Out Now
A Brazilian percussionist, Allysson Velez travels to Huntly, Scotland. There he is touched by the very first contact with the Scottish Ceilidh and impressed by the common musical language of the north east of Scotland and the north east of Brazil. Here he worked with a special selection of local Scottish musicians and a musician from West Africa, who has settled in the area, to transform an encounter into a musical flow of exchanging gifts and virtues. This album, NordEste/ NorthEast, documents that exchange of Scottish and Brazillian music, which also inaugurates a new word, Ceilidhcatu, merging the words Ceilidh (a traditional Gaelic social gathering, which usually involves playing music and dancing) and Maracatu (a performance genre found in Pernambuco state, in northeastern Brazil), from which the musicians have taken their name. Ùrlar is centred firmly around community and is undoubtedly the bands most diverse undertaking which has gained further inspiration and direction under the production of multi-instrumentalist and award-winning singer Kris Drever (Lau) Listen: http://breabach.bandcamp.com http://www.soundcloud.com/breabach Available from: http://breabach.bandcamp.com http://www.breabach.com iTunes, Amazon and all good record stores (Proper Distribution & Highlander Distribution) www.breabach.com https://twitter.com/breabach www.facebook.com/Breabach

Northern Nashville Country Music Festival Caithness 18-20 April In 2004 we took a gamble and ran our first ever Northern Nashville Caithness Country Music Festival (NNCCMF), which thankfully was a great success. Over the years it has gone from strength to strength, with country music fans converging on Caithness over Easter Weekend to be part of this 3-day 5-show extravaganza of live country music. This is truly an international event featuring top class acts from the USA, Canada, Europe, Ireland and the U.K. alongside our wealth of local talent and youth bands. www.nncmc.co.uk
The 2014 Niel Gow Festival will be held in the beautiful Perthshire village of Dunkeld & Birnam, home of Niel Gow. The annual festival was established in 2004 to celebrate the life and music of Perthshire's fiddle legend. It is envisaged that through time the festival and other activities will gather enough funds to erect a fitting memorial to Niel Gow in Dunkeld & Birnam. Niel Gow (not Neil Gow) was born in Strathbraan on 22nd March 1727 and grew up in the village of Inver, by Dunkeld. www.niel-gow.co.uk
