Janet Archer, Chief Executive of Creative Scotland said: “We are delighted to announce the opening of this year’s Creative Place Awards. Scotland is a country of such creative depth and ambition so these awards offers communities up and down the country the chance to fly the flag for their own creativity, and secure a cash award to help them do even more. Previous winners have shown how much is going on across Scotland and demonstrates the great work that artists and communities can achieve together for both those who live there and visitors alike.”

Honeycomb Retrospective - The Story So Far in the Highlands... In August ScreenHI became the Highland delivery partner for Honeycomb – Creative Works, a £3.58m programme designed to support businesses and individuals working in creating digital content across Animation, Music, Screen, Interactive and Computer Gaming. Over the last four months ScreenHI have developed a seriously strong network through their Honeycomb events across the western seaboard of Scotland. From Portree to Campbeltown ScreenHI has delivered networking events with partners like Scottish Games Network and PRS for Music, a trade event at West Highland College, a live sound workshop in Oban, Health & Safety training In Lochgilphead, a super intense two day pitching workshop in Skye, radio skills training in Oban, a music placement across visual media workshop in Campbeltown and taken delegates to international trade events. They say it has been an utter delight to meet so many people doing creative things as well as catching up with some familiar faces. ScreenHI Director Amanda Millen said: "If you have the idea, the drive and the enthusiasm, come and talk to us and we will see where we can take
your business. We are keen to talk to everyone who has an interest in developing a career in film and broadcast, animation, game design and development, interactive media, online content for wireless, mobile and internet and music technologies, with the emphasis on making music. It doesn’t matter where you are in your life or your career, we’d like to meet you." Here’s what you thought ..... "If you’re considering pitching to broadcasters then this course is invaluable. Over two days you will work on your own pitch with the help of honest feedback and constructive criticism from the facilitator and the group, in an atmosphere, which is always encouraging, highly supportive but with no punches pulled. By the time you put forward your pitch to industry representatives on the second day you’ll see just how far you have come... " - Fiona, The Engine Pitch Workshop, Skye "I felt overwhelmed coming straight out of college and into the creative industry with a goal in mind but no idea how to reach it. The Honeycomb events, the organisers and the speakers at the events I attended all helped me to form a clear path to getting to where I want to be, and if it wasn't for the funding supplied by Honeycomb I would have never have had a chance to gain the knowledge I have now." Duncan, Omnibeat Music Group, Oban
business strategy moving forward." - James, Kinetic Studio, Oban

Honeycomb delivery will come to an end in March but they've still got some training and skills sessions to deliver: Live Streaming Pro Tools Insurance and Legal Animation Access Day Gaming Masterclass with Victory Point as part of the Moray Game Jam Networking with the Edinburgh Television Festival These are the topics that have been pinned down. EDDI READER
Children of the Smoke was one of the key events of the Commonwealth Games Festival, a multimedia live performance reflecting the stories of the gaels and their connections with people from all five continents
starts 2015 off on the right note The new January to April brochure from Horsecross Arts raises the curtain and strikes up the band on another busy season of music, drama, comedy, dance, film and join-in activities. For classical music lovers, the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland will be performing Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro, Perth Symphony Orchestra will delight Schubert and Sibelius fans, and there is an extensive programme of Monday Lunchtime Concerts. Perth Piano Sundays also make a welcome return for an extended third series. The exclusive Perth Concert Series from Scotland’s national orchestras also continues for the second half of a rapturously received 2014:2015 season. The ever-popular Lesley Mackie reprises her Olivier Award-winning performance as Edith Piaf in a unique collaboration celebrating An Evening In Paris with the Hot Club Jazz Quartet. Regulars to the annual Southern Fried Festival will be no strangers to Perth’s own Red Pine Timber Company, who’ll be serving up their blend of soul, blues and Southern rock, with a rare appearance from Rancho Rebop and the Full Moon Howlers to boot. The much-loved Barbara Dickson brings her tour to Perth, and The Simon and Garfunkel Story makes the transition from the West End to visit Perth Concert Hall. With all that, and onenight concerts from Perth favourites Lau, Rick Wakeman and Steve Steinman, there’s a packed music programme to look forward to! The show goes on while Perth Theatre is closed for restoration and redevelopment with Perth Concert Hall stepping in to present the entire drama offering in the new season, beginning with Stef Smith’s And The Beat Goes On, performed by Johnny McKnight and Julie Brown. This co-production between Horsecross Arts and Random Accomplice will make use of the newly-constructed proscenium arch on the Perth Concert Hall stage, and under the watchful eye of Horsecross’ Associate Director for Drama, Kenny Miller, tells the story of sequins, survival and Sonny and Cher. As well as introducing an intimate theatre environment and focusing the audience’s eyes on the action, the creation of the arch allows the use of fly scenery, essential to bigger theatre productions such as 2014’s rollercoaster of a traditional family pantomime Sleeping Beauty, which plays to packed houses in Perth Concert Hall until Boxing Day. Elsewhere in the spring drama programme, you’ll find
Bard in the Botanics’ fivestar production of Romeo and Juliet, Sell-A-Door’s modern twist on Jekyll and Hyde, superhero adventure Hero Worship, and e-dating comedy Love 2.0. Comedy comes courtesy of everyone’s favourite Iranian comedian Omid Djalili, Alan Carr, Jimmy Carr, Dylan Moran, the controversial Stewart Lee and the sold-out Kevin Bridges. Perth Film Society presents a comprehensive series of films from around the world and there are many opportunities to learn a new skill, perfect existing talents and meet new friends in a range of Join-In activities. Looking ahead to a special summer treat, there is a five-night run of everyone’s Secret Love, the fabulous Calamity Jane starring I’d Do Anything winner Jodie Prenger. Gun-slingin’ tomboy Calamity and her adventures in Wild West and that famous Windy City will be whip-crackin’ fun for all the family in July. For full details on the above and much, much more in the new season, pick up a Jan:Apr 2015 brochure from Perth Concert Hall, call Horsecross Arts’ Box Office on 01738 621031 or visit the website.

Dean Owens hits 2015 single release, album & Celtic Connections gig Velvet-voiced Dean Owens is one of Scotland’s most acclaimed and established singer songwriters, with fans including Bob Harris, Irvine Welsh and Russell Brand. 2015 promises to be a great year starting with a date at the prestigious Celtic Connections Festival, single release, and a new Nashvillerecorded album - Into the Sea - coming out in late Spring. Into the Sea was recorded in Nashville, Tennessee with producer Neilson Hubbard and a whole host of amazing US musicians, including award winning guitarist Will Kimbrough and renowned singersongwriters Kim Richey and Suzy Bogguss. It will be released on Drumfire Records. A single from the album - Valentine’s Day in New York – will be released on 14 Feb. Dean’s music has been described as Celtic Americana with a rocky pop edge, and draws as much from his Scottish roots, especially his home town of Leith (referenced and loved by the Proclaimers) as from his US heroes. The emotional honesty in his songs shines through as he sings about people and places, love and regrets, drawing favourable comparisons with the likes of Springsteen. A gritty yet lyrical Scottish sensibility, delivered with a searingly soulful voice.

Dean’s solo career has seen him tour far and wide, including in Europe, USA and Australia. Dean is also highly regarded among other musicians and has played shows and toured with Steve Earle, Emmylou Harris, Joan As Policewoman, Eddi Reader, John Hiatt and Nanci Griffith, to name but a few. In his early career Dean was the front-man of the much loved and lauded Americana band The Felsons. Since launching his solo career he has produced 5 albums, including the highly regarded Whisky Hearts (also recorded in Nashville), New York Hummingbird (recorded in the Big Apple with some exceptional New York-based musicians) and Cash Back (Songs I Learned From Johnny) album, inspired by one of his lifelong idols, Johnny Cash. Dean Owens is a compelling live performer and his Celtic Connections gig with his 5 piece Whisky Hearts Band – a double bill with the acclaimed Chastity Brown (seen recently on Jools Holland) – promises to be a highlight of the festival. He is a regular performer at Celtic Connections (the world’s largest winter music festival), and his song Raining in Glasgow was used to promote the festival by BBC Radio Scotland.

National Rural Touring Forum (NRTF) 2015 Conference offers showcase opportunities Full details and links @ http://housetheatre.org.uk/opportunities/nrtf-conference-and-showcase-2015/
The National Rural Touring Forum (NRTF) 2015 rural touring conference will explore the idea that “Rural Touring is GREAT at audience engagement!. The conference will be based at Wymondham College Norfolk from 14-16 July and is presented in partnership with Creative Arts East. It will bring delegates to Wymondham College and nearby venues from across the UK and further afield for three days of showcases, workshops, debate, discussion and networking. Showcasing is an important part of the conference, allowing touring schemes, venues and voluntary promoters to see work, share experiences and broaden their knowledge of work available. NRTF is now looking for applications from artists wishing to showcase at the conference. The programme will showcase theatre, dance and music. Applications for conference showcases are now open, with a closing date of 12 February. Artists and companies interested in applying should visit the NRTF website at www.ruraltouring.org for information on how to apply. In 2012/13 the rural touring network supported 2,407 rural communities to promote over 3,762 live professional arts performances for a combined audience of 308,976. Research shows that rural touring reaches many people who never or rarely access the arts and that it makes a valuable contribution to community life. The NRTF annual conference is the must-attend event for all those interested in supporting high quality arts events within rural communities. The conference is particularly suitable for rural touring scheme workers, promoters, venues, funders, local authority officers and members and artists and performers. Delegate booking for the conference will open in the Spring.

If Hogmanay is a blur, re-live the moment on iPlayer with a Ceilidh in Lochaber or bands on Edinburgh's Waverly Stage If you're feeling a bit of the January blues then have a rousing evening enjoying the best of Scotland's Hogmanay musical celebrations via BBC's iPlayer.
BBC ALBA celebrated Hogmanay in fine Highland style last year with a live ceilidh featuring a host of wonderful singers and musicians to help bid fond farewell to the old year and give a rousing welcome to 2015. Cathy MacDonald and Kirsteen MacDonald hosted the programme live from Kilmallie Community Centre, Corpach in Lochaber, offering a hundred thousand welcomes throughout a sensational night of music and song. Leo Moran, co-founder of The Saw Doctors and Anthony Thistlethwaite, co-founder of The Waterboys cross the water from Galway and joined the celebrations as The Leo and Anto Acoustic Project. They were joined by Skipinnish, who won Best Live Act of the Year at the MG ALBA Scots Trad Music Awards 2014, Ellen MacDonald, Mod Ladies Gold Medal finalist, the Highland pipe ensemble, Seudan and the all-female, multi award winning choir, Atomic Piseag. And the foot stomping Glenfinnan Ceilidh Band are back by popular demand to complete the bill of artists who will provide an exciting and eclectic music line up throughout the hour and three quarter long Hogmanay spectacular. Ramon Roper
This is a MUSIC NEWS Scotland series profiling Scottish Music Centre members
"The Scottish Music Centre's task is to champion the wealth of talent that abounds in Scotland's musical community"
Ramon received his musical education at Trinity College of Music, London (now Trinity Guildhall) and his early works include Triptych for Horn & Piano (written for Ifor James), Wings (song cycle for Soprano & Piano written for April Cantello), and Fanfares & Canzonettes for Double Bass & Harp (commissioned by Bronwen Naish). In 1974 Ramon moved to Scotland, where he co-founded the Theatre of Light and Shadow, for whom he wrote a lot of incidental music including A Tudor Suite (for Medieval Jug Band!), and The Jackdaw (a setting of the poem by William Cowper, for Countertenor, Oboe & Harpsichord.
orchestra) and Fanfare for Spokane (for large orchestra), written for the world Subud Conference in 1997 and performed by the Spokane Symphony under Lucas Richmann. In 2001 Ramon decided to train as a Suzuki teacher, and he now teaches piano by the method. This affords him time and opportunities to compose for that medium, as well as the space to create more challenging and complex work like Quint's Jam.
Ramon writes: "Quint's Jam began life a number of years ago as an improvisation in 5/4 time for dance. Malcolm Lindsay : album : ''After The Snow' release date - 9 February : buy @ www.amazon.co.uk/Malcolm-Lindsay-After-The-Snow/dp/B00RC5TE8K After the Snow is the latest album by acclaimed Scottish composer Malcolm Lindsay. Beautifully performed by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, and conducted by Greg Lawson, the CD features a world premiere co-write with English National Opera clarinettist Barnaby Robson.
Malcolm Lindsay
The album contains three suites; Remembrance, Vision and Last Words and draws inspiration from the spoken word of Dr King, the written words of Mark Halliday, Bernard MacLaverty and Janice Galloway, the street sounds collected by Stuart Duffin in Jerusalem and the photography of Margaret Watkins. Remembrance is a brooding orchestral score commemorating loved ones taken by war. Deeply moving, it reflects the humility and strength of those lost souls. My Duty, an orchestral string piece, grew from the rhythms, power and conviction of Dr King’s message. Filmic in nature, Watkins, inspired by Margaret’s photography and poetry, has its roots in an ambient soundtrack, embellished by Barnaby Robson’s eight clarinet lines. Commissioned by Waterstones, One White Horse and Grace Notes, inspired by Janice Galloway’s ‘Six Horses’ and Bernard MacLaverty’s ‘Grace Notes’, are striking and vivid orchestral string arrangements that acoustically breathes life into the prose.
On After the Snow, Malcolm Lindsay proves himself a composer of rare subtlety and this music is written from the heart. A very personal body of work that reflects Malcolm’s emotional journey of one kind or another, After the Snow is a luscious sonic experience, both meditative and cinematic in quality. Malcolm Lindsay is an established classical composer whose work has been performed internationally by some of the world's leading players. His first classical album, Solitary Citizen, received airplay world-wide. He has collaborated with a wide range of classical musicians, including the Scottish Ensemble, Scottish Chamber Orchestra, BBC Concert Orchestra, BRNO Philharmonic Orchestra and the Moscow Ensemble. He is also in demand as a producer, writer and arranger. Malcolm is also a multi-talented musician and RTS award-winning composer for feature films and TV. His film scores include; Blinded, Young Adam, (on which Malcolm collaborated with David Byrne), Penny Woolcock's highly acclaimed Exodus and 16 Years Of Alcohol. For television, among Malcolm's notable credits are the scores to One Night, a 4 part drama for BBC in collaboration with Masterpiece on PBS directed by David Evans and exec produced by Hilary Salmon; The Children, a 3 part drama for ITV written and directed by Lucy Gannon; In Love With Barbara for BBC4 starring Anne Reid as Barbara Cartland; Unforgiven for Red Productions; and popular crime series Taggart and Whitechapel. In documentary, Malcolm scored: Crimes That Shook The World; two series about serial killers for RDF; and Civilisation, a major series produced by Chimerica Media, presented by Niall Ferguson. He continues to score Michael Palin's documentaries on Art.
Greg Lawson conducted the orchestra and also led the chamber music trio and quartet.

We offer a wide range of events: music – including classical, jazz and folk, dance, theatre, literary, children’s events, plus the visual arts and films.
