Young composers to compete for first national composition title Scotland’s national orchestra is running the nation’s first composition competition specifically for 12-18 year olds. In partnership with the National Trust for Scotland, 'Notes From Scotland' invites young composers to write a two-minute work for an instrumental trio, quartet or quintet. The theme for the first year’s 'Notes From Scotland' is inspired by five National Trust locations around the country. From the entries five finalists will be selected by an expert panel with their compositions being performed and recorded by members of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra (RSNO) at Perth Concert Hall on Wednesday 7 June 2015. The winner will be announced following the performance and will receive an iPad loaded with music software packages, VIP access to RSNO concerts and a year’s National Trust for Scotland pass. On Sunday 25 January composer Stuart MacRae will host a workshop for young composers at Pollok House, Glasgow. The participants will be given a tour of the National Trust for Scotland property before Stuart gives an introductory guide to composing to a theme. A further workshop will be held at Georgian House, Edinburgh on Saturday 7 March, with composer Matilda Brown. The workshops are free but places need to be reserved, by contacting the RSNO’s Learning and Engagement team on 0141 225 3557 or email engage@rsno.org.uk This is a rare opportunity for entrants to obtain feedback on their music from some of Scotland's eminent composers. Entrants do not have to attend the workshops to enter the competition. The Notes From Scotland website includes video resources featuring introductions to each of the Trust properties across Scotland and insight and advice from some of the country’s greatest living composers. BAFTA, GRAMMY and Ivor Novello award-winning composer Craig Armstrong OBE, famed for his soundtracks to blockbusters such as Moulin Rouge!, Love Actually and The Great Gatsby, welcomed the initiative: “This is a fantastic idea to engage young people in composition and to bring them together with existing composers and musicians to pass on their knowledge and skills. I’m sure it will be an invaluable experience for all concerned.” Full details on the competition and how to enter can be found at www.notesfromscotland.co.uk Closing date for entries is Sunday 31 May 2015.

Rowan is a singer-songwriter, guitarist and violinist from Glasgow, his violin playing blends influences from the world of jazz, blues and roots. Firelight is a collection of thought provoking songs served in an acoustic heaven
2015 marks the twentieth birthday of the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra and the stars are already in alignment for a very special year of celebrations, beginning with our February concerts and the marvellous music of the remarkable Billy Strayhorn. Strayhorn was born in 1915 and his name is synonymous with Duke Ellington’s finest work. The hugely prolific Strayhorn composed and arranged literally hundreds of pieces for Duke and wrote many of Ellington’s greatest hits, often un-credited for his efforts.

Children of the Smoke was one of the key events of the Commonwealth Games Festival, a multimedia live performance reflecting the stories of the gaels and their connections with people from all five continents
In the 1990’s, jazz historian Walter van de Leur uncovered dozens of previously unknown compositions by Strayhorn. These captivating pieces sparkle with Billy Strayhorn’s musical ingenuity and his obvious penchant for a brightly gregarious melody. Now those lost Strayhorn tunes are in their rightful place as a restored chapter in the jazz repertoire. In 2003, the SNJO directed by Van de Leur, brought Strayhorn’s colourful melodies brilliantly to life. Critics at the time concurred: “Strayhorn’s adventurous harmonies… and musical textures were beautifully rendered”, said The Scotsman, while The Herald pronounced that these shows were, “further endorsement of the orchestra's adaptability and readiness for, it seems, any challenge.” Now, the SNJO offers a more rounded portrait of Billy Strayhorn in concerts laced with Ellington era hits and sensitive Strayhorn originals.

In the hands of the SNJO it’s a sound that makes you feel a bit more optimistic about the world, and a reminder that it would have been a poorer place without the influential contribution and timeless music of Billy Strayhorn.

Gleadhraich's Craig Weir picked to pipe for Queen at their Glasgow gig! Watch 21 year old Craig play for 'Queen' @ http://youtu.be/VCxBX3W-Er0
Carnoustie piper Craig Weir had a dream come true when he performed on stage in Glasgow with rock legends Queen. Craig (21), who's the frontman for four-piece band Gleadhraich, was selected by Brian May to start their encore rendition of We Will Rock You on the bagpipes as a surprise for the audience on the Scottish leg of their world tour at the SSE Hydro.
“I have to thank Brian May for such an incredible opportunity. He seemed really pleased with me and the first thing he did when he got off-stage was give me a big hug.”
Craig was chosen after Brian came up with the idea of have a piper support them on We Will Rock You at the Glasgow gig and heard how Craig and his band Gleadhraich Speaking afterwards, Craig said: promote the bagpipes to young “The opportunity to stand on stage people by using them on arrangements of classic rock songs and play with Brian May, Roger as well as their own rock-based Taylor and Adam Lambert was tunes. When I was confirmed for the gig I instantly got the shakes. I couldn’t believe it. To say I’ve stood on stage and played with Queen is more than a little ridiculous!” Craig is no stranger to playing for VIPs as he composed a tune for and played it to the Dalai Lama when he visited Dundee in June 2012. He also played Happy Birthday to Gandhi’s grandson Arun over Skype last year and has played for The Queen, Alex Salmond and the VIPs at the 2013 MOBOs in Glasgow. At just 21, Craig is already an internationally-recognised piper in his own right with performances in Switzerland, Belgium, China, and Germany to date. At the age of eight his uncle Jack handed him a set of pipes and urged him to have a go. Since then he’s never looked
back. His reputation has grown so much that last year he was asked to play the pipes at Lorraine Kelly’s Scottish BAFTAs special award presentation, Andy Murray’s honorary graduation at Stirling University (at the request of Judy Murray) and join Babyshambles on stage. At home in Carnoustie Craig is Pipe Sergeant of the Arbroath Royal British Legion Pipe Band and is frontman for four-piece Celtic rock band Gleadhraich. Gleadhraich's list of celebrity fans include Scots music legend Dougie Maclean and Gordon Strachan and they’ve played support for Jai McDowall, ex-AC/DC drummer Chris Slade and Skerryvore with a support show with Donnie Munro next month. The band were Angus Cultural Ambassadors for 2014 and were commissioned by Angus Council to write their tune Skirling Ska as part of the county’s legacy from the Commonwealth Games.

DANIEL MEADE : Album : 'Keep Right Away' release date - 19 January : buy online @ https://itunes.apple.com/…/album/keep-right-away/id951790265
Daniel Meade released his debut solo album ‘As Good As Bad Can Be’ in 2013 to critical acclaim in the UK, attracting much radio exposure, including a coveted BBC Introducing Session on Another Country With Ricky Ross which showcased a “live” and well-received performance. Since then he has travelled far and wide, honing his skills and opening for acts such as Willie Watson, Diana Jones, Vikesh Kapoor and the award winning Sturgill Simpson with whom he completed two nationwide tours in support with and his band The Flying Mules. Having forged strong links with Old Crow medicine Show, it was no surprise when he popped up as the opening act at the band’s recent Glasgow show. In February 2014, Daniel was invited to Nashville by Morgan Jahnig of OCMS after he heard As Good As Bad Can Be and viewed his BBC Introducing Session online. Jahnig was so impressed, he offered to engineer and produce the new album…and then put a killer band together comprising some of Meade’s favourite musicians, including Cory Younts, Chance McCoy, Joshua Hedley, Chris Scruggs, and Morgan himself. Guest spots were filled by Diana Jones, Shelly Colvin and Critter from Old Crow. receiving lots of great reviews and racking up meaningful radio plays, The album came together at Stadium Studio in Hendersonville, TN, over 7 including a spin on BBC Radio 2 from Bob Harris. days in April 2014 when these 13 new originals came fully to life. ‘Hailed like homecoming heroes, Meade and his band are ones to watch The result is ‘Keep Right Away’, an exciting, diverse and very self assured out for’ - Americana-uk.com album that draws on the ghosts of all of his influences, from Hank Williams, Big Bill Broonzy and Jerry Lee Lewis through to the more contemporary throes of Old Crow Medicine Show and Justin Townes Earle. All the while, Meade’s originality as a songwriter and musician shines through and remains intact.

DAVID KNOWLES : Debut EP : 'The Alchemist' release date - 19 January : buy @ http://davidknowles.biz/music
Distinctive vocalist and songwriter David Knowles opens 2015 with the launch of debut EP ‘The Alchemist’, available through iTunes, CDBaby, Amazon and Spotify. Based in Edinburgh, Knowles has already developed a growing international social media following. Lyrically, he draws inspiration from classic writers including William Blake, Oscar Wilde, Jack Kerouac and Hunter Thompson. Years spent travelling the world (including Latin America, Asia and Europe) have provided a rich vein of inspiration for his songwriting and familiarity with a range of exotic instruments including the Didjeridoo, African Djembe drum and far eastern Dulcimer. With a depth and range that bely his relatively tender years, Knowles’ voice has drawn favourable comparisons to such iconic performers as Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder and Grammy award-winning country singer Ray Lamontagne. His songwriting has been variously compared to leading contemporary singer songwriters including Damien Rice, Jose Gonzalez and Fink as well as Californian alternative rock veterans Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. The four-track release provides a tantalising taster of debut album ‘Footsteps’, due for release on 9th March.
relentless thrum of guitar as Knowles’ deep baritone gently implores: “See what I see. Feel what I feel.” The EP closes with Knowles’ live radio performance of ‘The Air You Breathe’, a fragile hymn to longing. Seguing effortlessly from gentle finger-picking to a delicately strummed chorus, Knowles whispers the mantra: “All I want, all I need is to breathe the air you breathe.”
First track ‘The Alchemist’ has already attracted an enthusiastic online following, supported by an evocative and atmospheric video. Combining tender acoustic guitar with Knowles’ bruised and breathy vocal, the production is completed by mournful strings and subtle digital percussion. http://davidknowles.biz ‘On the Road’ provides an opportunity to showcase a full band dynamic. Thumb Music
The debut album from Scottish singer and songwriter Kirsty Law accompanied by musicians Rona Wilkie, Marit Falt, Conrad Molleson and David Milligan with special appearance from Edinburgh songsmith Wounded Knee. Creative and sensitive interpretations of traditional material alongside thoughtful and original self penned work.
Fireflight is the new album from singer, songwriter, guitarist and violinist Rowan Ross from Glasgow, Scotland. The album is a beautiful collection of personal, thoughtprovoking songs, served up in an acoustic heaven featuring some truly wonderful musicianship from a great band.
We are VASQUEZ. We make ‘action-packed’ rock. VASQUEZ was originally three guys who met on Gumtree following a post looking for band members by guitarist/founding member Ciaran Mckenna. The ad lead to him meeting Richard James Iremonger (bass) and Jon Adam (drums) in 2009 and them coming up with the name VASQUEZ; after the hard as nails, heavy machine-gun wielding bad-ass from the film ‘Aliens’. Unfortunately in December 2010 James had to leave the band and that was when Sean Quinn took over on bass duties.

But these 10 contemporary songs are, for her, as compelling as any ancient tale. “I’m not turning my back on traditional music,” she explains. “For me, folk songs have the same purpose as the songs I’ve recorded on this album. Combining an unusual blend of instruments and pedigrees plus vocal harmony – self penned and traditional songs and tunes, encompassing a host of subjects, contemporary and historic, from Saint Columba to Dundee Whaling songs... Scot's abroad, chorus songs and world events all with Scot's related themes, all about people with wonderful stories.
First Charge of the Light Brigades self-titled debut album is predominately the work of Yorick Cormack, the main songwriter of former Glasgow alt country band Endrick Brothers. With a sound that rests comfortably amongst many contemporary favourites such as Teenage Fanclub, Wilco and Trashcan Sinatras, it also evokes memories of past luminaries such as Big Star and The Byrds. The album includes a guest performance from Roddy Hart on backing vocals.

Our 9-day festival has taken place since 1979. The founding aim was to bring international performers of the highest quality to a region containing many scattered rural communities since then this region has produced some of its own talent of international standing and we’re proud to also be able to present these artistes from time to time. We offer a wide range of events: music – including classical, jazz and folk, dance, theatre, literary, children’s events, plus the visual arts and films. Events take place in a range of venues throughout the region, from large to small, formal to informal, urban to rural. www.dgartsfestival.org.uk
