£600,000 Of Arts Projects Funded Through 'Tasgadh' Grant Scheme Creative Scotland is to continue funding Tasgadh, a scheme which offers grants of up of £1,000 to organisations and individuals involved in Scottish Traditional Arts. Since its inception in 2015-16 Tasgadh has dealt with 330 applications, 204 of which were awarded funding totaling £126,000 for projects worth nearly £600,000. The funded projects have involved more than 30,000 people between audiences, participants and those delivering the projects. The fund is supported by Creative Scotland and managed by Fèisean nan Gàidheal. It is available to provide support for traditional artists and organisations to create, perform, tour and showcase work. Professional development applications can also be supported though the fund. There are three deadline dates for Tasgadh applications during 2019-20, the first of those being 26 July. Guidelines and application forms are available at feisean.org/tasgadh and a new online application form has been introduced. There is also a range of Case Studies of successfully completed projects to give applicants a flavor of the kind of initiatives Tasgadh will support. Fèisean nan Gàidheal Chief Executive, Arthur Cormack, welcomed the on-going commitment from Creative Scotland: “Tasgadh has confirmed there is a need within the Traditional Arts sector for access to small grants which are relatively light touch and offer a fast decision-making process. Creative Scotland continues to support traditional arts directly and can deal with larger projects through other routes, but we are very happy the organisation has undertaken to continue funding Tasgadh in 2019-20 with £31,500 available to disburse to Scottish traditional music, dance and storytelling projects.” Kirsty MacDonald, Traditional Arts Officer at Creative Scotland said: "We are delighted with the strength and range of applications to the Tasgadh fund from all over Scotland, and commend Fèisean nan Gàidheal on their ongoing work in promoting and administering the scheme. We strongly encourage individuals and groups working in the traditional arts to look at this fund for support and particularly encourage projects working in Gaelic, Scots and hard to reach audiences.” www.feisean.org

The SAY Award reveals exciting new partnerships with YouTube Music & independent craft distillery Sweetdram

On Friday 26 July at The Queen’s Hall in Edinburgh, the Scottish Album of the Year (SAY) Award will bring together incredible artists and music fans to celebrate the strength and diversity of Scottish music. Twenty outstanding Scottish albums will be announced as this year’s SAY Award Longlist, all in the running for the £20,000 prize and coveted title of Scottish Album of the Year. The SAY Award has also revealed brand new partners for this year’s campaign, with YouTube Music and Edinburgh based distillery Sweetdram joining existing partners including Ticketmaster New Music, PPL, Harviestoun Brewery and Creative Scotland. YouTube Music is a new music streaming service made for music listening, on top of the magic of YouTube: making the world of music easier to explore and more personalised than ever. Whether you want to listen, watch or discover all the ways music moves you can be found in one place - not just music videos, but official albums, singles, remixes, live performances, covers and hard-to-find music you can't get anywhere else. The Scottish Music Industry Association (SMIA) are delighted to partner with YouTube Music for 2019’s SAY Award; the highest profile and most ambitious campaign to date. Sweetdram is another hugely exciting addition to The SAY Award 2019 campaign, with the Edinburgh based spirits company having been established by Daniel Fisher and Andrew MacLeod Smith in 2014 and the brand being huge supporters of Scotland’s rich, diverse and internationally admired music scene. Sweetdram spoke to The SAY Award about their love for music with Co-Founder Daniel Fisher revealing “we’ve got the meatiest sound system and biggest vinyl collection at any distillery in Scotland, probably the world.” David Mogendorff, Head of Artist Partnerships for YouTube Music, EMEA said: “YouTube Music could not be more excited to be supporting The SAY Award this year. Scotland has a long history of creating music that is loved by the world, and we’re delighted to work with The SAY Award to highlight the incredible diversity of the Scottish music scene both within Scotland and beyond.” New partners Sweetdram Co-founder Daniel Fisher continued: “Music is massively important to us, so having the opportunity to partner with The SAY Award this year is particularly special. As independent flavourdriven distillers who make spirits that sit in the spaces between conventional categories, we appreciate how difficult it can be to strike the right balance between creative conviction and commercial imperative. Thanks to the great work

Modern Studies :: www.facebook.com/modernstudiestheband being continuously carried out by the team at The SAY Award, and the SMIA in general, we hope that Scottish musicians can find increasing ways to stay loyal to themselves artistically and still afford the rent. We’re only jealous there isn’t an equivalent for the craft drinks industry.” The Live at the Longlist event is not to be missed. As well as the live Longlist announcement, the event will also feature performances from previous SAY Award nominees C Duncan, Kobi Onyame and a unique collaboration between Idlewild’s Rod Jones and Modern Studies, and a special set from Tallah Brash, Music Editor at The Skinny. For 2019 The SAY Award relocates to Edinburgh for the very first time, bringing Scotland’s national music prize and two flagship events to the capital city. SHAMBOLICS :: sign to Alan McGee's 'Creation23' Creation23 @ www.facebook.com/Creation23label/ Shambolics are a fervently ambitious outfit from Scotland who are more than ready to take on the World, and now the Fife four-piece take one further step towards greatness as they announce their signing to Creation23, a brand new label venture from infamous Scottish music mogul Alan McGee. A far cry from the rag-tag chaos their name would perhaps imply, Shambolics have a knack for artfully honed and irresistibly dreamy rock’n’roll that calls to mind the indelible sounds of the genre’s lauded masters, from The LA’s to The Beatles and The Stone Roses.

Tramlines Festival and Reading&Leeds Festival; Shambolics glitter with all the hallmarks of a band destined for greatness. In 2019, Shambolic’s ascent continues with the band tallying-up in excess of 250,000 Spotify plays for infectious recent demo “When She Goes Home” and count unforgettable SOLD OUT shows at some of Scotland’s most legendary gig spaces including Glasgow’s King Tuts and Edinburgh’s Mash House among their achievements.

With the rumours from the underground growing ever louder to a soundtrack of languid, reverb-washed singles with melodies each more Breaking out of the Fife scene and quickly accruing a burgeoning and timeless than the last; it was surely only matter of time before word of passionately devoted fanbase across wider Scotland, the band scooped the 2017 SAMA Award for 'Best Rock/Alternative Act’ and have continued the Shambolics became music to the ears to one of Glasgow’s most musically in-tune sons: Alan McGee. With an irrefutable ear for talent, on an upwards trajectory ever since. From earning critical acclaim from McGee (who famously signed classic acts the likes of Oasis, Primal press tastemakers including BBC Scotland (Vic Galloway), This Feeling, Radio X, Virgin Radio (Edith Bowman) & Fred Perry Subculture, to sharing Scream, Jesus & The Marychain to his Creation Records label), quickly went on record to hail Shambolic’s as 'a great new band' after catching huge stages with the likes of The Sherlocks & The View performing at the band play at a live showcase in London. some of the UK's biggest festivals including Isle of Wight Festival, Speaking about what attracted him to signing the band to his latest label, Creation23, McGee says: 'Scottish indie music is having a renaissance at the moment and I was so glad I came up to Edinburgh to see the Shambolics live. After I saw them I just had to sign them. One of the best Scottish artists out there. A classic creation band. Big tunes and they look great!' A meeting of minds that matches one of Scotland’s greatest musical business heads with one of its most promising emerging talents, this is a signing Shambolic in name only. With a series of major festival appearances to look forward to over the Summer, this is just the beginning. Watch this space for new music from Shambolics in due course ..... Created over three years in three locations (Scotland/Chennai/Kolkata), Thacker’s third release creating new sound worlds through his immersion in Indian classical, folk and spiritual traditions is the epic double album Trikala (Sanskrit for the three tenses of time, past, present and future), featuring 13 performers from the subcontinent and Europe.

Reflections from an Airport is a must-buy album. It’s an album for busy people who have earned the right to take a moment to stop and let the world drift by. It’s for people who deserve ‘me time’. So indulge and treat yourself to some time away from the pressures that life may throw at you. The album has songs that will make you smile, make you laugh, make you cry and make you think. Drawn from life’s experiences, each song tells a story and paints a picture we can all relate too. It touches on basic human truths we all share in common... like love won and lost in all its guises. Andy writes songs for adults. His songs are for people who have lived a full life. For people who can relate to the highs and lows of daily living and know it’s not all ‘happy ever after but the ride can be fun.’ Listen to the songs and discover this for yourself.

JOHN GRAHAM & JIM JACK Sae Will We Yet album / cd / Release Date: out now

John Graham and Jim Jack’s debut album features an eclectic mix of many of the favourite songs from their live act with contributions from some of the most talented contemporary songwriters from Scotland and further afield. Graeme Miles’ haunting ‘Eldorado’ hints at a life of missed opportunities while Iain Ingram’s ‘Calton Rose’ and ‘Braes o’ Appin’ are love songs in the Scottish tradition and Steven Clark’s ‘Coming Home’ talks of the plight of the many refugees cast adrift in the world today. Jim King’s ‘West Coast Days’ and ‘Home To The Kyles’ from the pen of Duncan McCrone and Celly Paterson evoke memories of summer days on the Clyde Coast. From earlier days of the folk revival come Ewan MacColl’s ‘Manchester Rambler’ and Matt McGinn’s enigmatic ‘Magic Shadow Show’. John and Jim’s love of Americana is also represented in the rollicking ‘Truck Driving Man’. John and Jim’s act recalls much of the spirit of the folk clubs in the 60s and 70s with plenty of chorus singing and a fair measure of humour thrown in. scotland's new releases ..... album : single : ep / cd : vinyl : download JAMIE MACDONALD & CHRISTIAN GAMAUF The Pipe Slang

JON BUDWORTH Jon Budworth is a singer/songwriter originally from Lancashire but now very much an honorary Yorkshireman living in the bustling market town of Otley. Jon is a relative late-comer to the wonderful world of folk and acoustic music, having spent many years cast adrift in the dark and seedy underbelly of rock’n’roll. Jon changed musical direction in 2010 after happening upon a Youtube video of Richard Thompson playing his beautiful and evocative song Beeswing. There has been no looking back ever since! Jon cites his influences, amongst others, as John Renbourn, Nic Jones and, of course, Richard Thompson.

The musical partnership of the Scottish pipes and fiddle is one that is quintessentially and historically Hebridean. Jamie MacDonald and Christian Gamauf have taken this format and incorporated influences from places such as Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia and Asturias in the north of Spain, putting their own stamp on the music. Jamie and Christian met while living and studying on the Isles of Uist and began playing together at local concerts and events. After travelling to Asturias on a musical and cultural exchange project, along with performances at Ceòl on the Croft, Celtic Connections and Celtic Colours Festivals, the duo started working on their debut album, The Pipe Slang. The album features the traditional music of the Hebrides and includes songs from the Isle of Tiree as well as self-penned material and tunes from further afield.

LINSEY AITKEN & KEN CAMPBELL Shore To Shore album / cd / Release Date: out now

This is our second CD as a duo, with a mixture of new songs and instrumentals, many focussing on our Scottish connections around the world, each with a story, and most of all about people and histories of the past and present. Fortunately, people seem to really like what we do, and ask what kind of music we perform. The answer is not one genre or another, but a blending of everyone and everything we have met along the way. A coming together of both our musical journeys, combined into one together, with elements of our respective musical backgrounds in Celtic, Classical, Traditional, Contemporary Music and all else. But most of all our music is about people, and all those who have influenced us and inspired us along the way.

PAUL ANDERSON

AULD NEW HEIDS

Land and Sea

The High Summit

AULD NEW HEIDS - Volume 1

After many years as a well-known face on the band circuit, Bob Leslie’s re-invention of himself as an acoustic performer resulted in two well-received Americana CDs - In a Different World (2010) and Fat Cat (2011) - and a re-launch onto the folk circuit. There, his highly-crafted songs - some serious, some very funny indeed - had audiences showing lively appreciation. However, more and more, Bob found himself drawn to the challenge of writing in a more traditional Scottish vein - a medium, as it turned out, ideal for a musical storyteller.

Paul Anderson from Royal Deeside in Aberdeenshire is one of Scotland’s finest traditional fiddle players and The High Summit is his third album of self penned music and song. Like The Singing Land and Land of the Standing Stones before it, The High Summit celebrates the history, landscape and people of Paul’s beautiful North-East homeland. Joining Paul on The High Summit are a group of exceptional artists, highly respected in their own right and adding their own touch of magic to the album. Shona Donaldson on vocals (Scots Singer of the Year 2009 and first female winner of the Bothy Ballad Champion of Champions), Tony McManus on guitar (worldrenowned Scottish guitarist now based in Canada), Malcolm Jones on guitar and accordion (Runrig), Ale Carr on Cittern (Dreamer’s Circus), Ali Napier on keyboards (Miami Vince and former member of the Dougie MacLean Band) and James Gorgon on percussion (Albany show band and The Cutting Edge).

This album embraces all that was great about the golden days of the scottish folk scene in the 1960s/70s. It is a catalogue of some of the best and most popular songs of the time written by folk legends such as Ewan MacColl, Alex Campbell, Hamish Henderson, Matt McGinn, Archie Fisher, Jim McLean and Mary Brookesbank. Also Robert Burns and Sir Walter Scott have a song each on the album. A quartet of four of Scotland’s most experienced performers brings together the vocal talents of brothers IAN and FRASER BRUCE along with the exceptional musical skills of PETE CLARK on fiddle and GREGOR LOWREY on accordion. It has to be said that IAN BRUCE is pretty efficient on guitar, to complete the instrumental section. Available from: www.birnamcdshop.com
