Scottish Album of the Year (SAY) Award goes to ...... Sacred Paws The 2017 winner of the most coveted music prize in Scotland was announced on 28 June as Sacred Paws with their album Strike A Match. At a ceremony presented by co-hosts Vic Galloway and Nicola Meighan in Paisley Town Hall, an audience of industry insiders, avid music fans and some of Scotland’s best and brightest creative talent watched as Sacred Paws emerged as the winner from a fiercely competitive shortlist, winning the £20,000 first prize. The band also received a unique Paisley-inspired winners trophy, created by local jeweller Lisa Crockard, winner of the The Say Design Commission.

Each of shortlisted bands won a £1,000 prize, and all ten received a 3D printed plate produced by Glasgow School of Art graduate and Paisley jeweller, Lisa Crockard. The SAY Award’s chosen charity this year was Help Musicians UK. It is their mission to create a sustainable future for all musicians and the industry, and is looking to create innovative opportunities for Scottish musicians and the music sector to develop their talent, skills and experience. Throughout the night guests were treated to outstanding live sets from Scottish acts including boundary-breaking The Spook School, folk quintet Elephant Sessions, vivacious Be Charlotte plus last year’s SAY Award winner, Anna Meredith. Presenters also paid tribute to the late Gary Wilson of Scottish indie-rock band The Lapelles, who tragically died on 14 August.

The public can listen to and learn more about Band member, Rachel Aggs was each of the albums by visiting the SAY Award overwhelmed by their win, saying “I just website. want to say thank you so much, thanks to the SAY Award, thanks to the judges, thanks to everyone at Rock Action and I can’t believe it! I’m trying really hard not to swear! We are not always the most confident people and I think playing music has a lot to do with confidence so this is completely overwhelming and we don’t feel like we belong here but at the same time we feel validated for what we do. Thank you.”

A Night For Angus: The Video This 90 minute video is essential viewing for Shoogle fans who were not able to attend the band's Celtic Connections tribute to their mesmeric front man Angus R Grant back in January, and for lovers of Highland dance music everywhere. Featuring highlights of Shooglenifty's performance from the already legendary tribute concert to Angus at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall on 21 January 2017, this video includes performances from guest fiddlers Adam Sutherland (Treacherous Orchestra), Charlie McKerron (Capercaillie), Duncan Chisholm, Eilidh Shaw (The Poozies), Gavin Marwick and Laura Wilkie (Fat Suit), plus many other members of the extended Shoogle family. Proceeds from the video will contribute to the completion of a documentary about Angus and the band, with a percentage from each transaction going to Cancer Research's work into prevention and treatment of oesophageal cancer.

A Night For Angus: The Back Story Last June Shooglenifty got some great news. The band had received funding from Creative Scotland to help them make an album with their Rajasthani collaborators Dhun Dhora at the Mehrangarh Fort in Jodhpur, and to also produce a documentary about the process. It should have been a celebratory mood, but their collective gut told them that there was something not quite right with their fiddle player Angus. Just over a month later the band got the news they had been dreading. Angus was very ill indeed and the prognosis was dark: he wasn’t going to get better. Shooglenifty gigs were being cancelled all over the place, othe India trip was put on hold, and everyone was rallying round Angus and his family. When he died in October the outpouring of love from Shoogle friends and fans all over the world was quite overwhelming.

position in the auditorium. Everything and played with Angus at one time or another – came together for a gig that everyone was where they should have been prehas already attracted legendary status. show. And then, the fire alarm went off. So, at Shoogle's manager was warned from the start that the concert should not over-run, and she had neatly programmed the show to finish at 10.30pm knowing that with the cast of characters on the bill, this was about as likely as Mick Jagger and Keith Richards travelling to a gig in the same car.

"Shooglenifty and the Grant family have created the finest, most joyful tribute possible to their departed brother" Neil McFadyen, Folk Radio

the time when the gig was due to start more than 2,000 people were standing in the street outside the Concert Hall.

Luckily gut wrenching time was kept to a minimum thanks to swift work by the fire brigade and everyone was back inside the building by 8pm. The joke of the night was that it was the ghost of Angus having a fly fag in one of the toilets that set off the smoke alarms. The show finally began with an uncharacteristically seated Shooglenifty playing Adam Sutherland’s heartfelt new composition The Wizard, a tune inspired by Angus. The first half also included performances from our late fiddler’s niece Eva, his dad Aonghas, sister Fiona, representatives from various sessions he had been involved with over the years, and bands who wanted to pay their respects. The Shoogles and Duncan Chisholm closed the first set with a heartrending pair of tunes: Farewell to Nigg and Sileas. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house. But from the moment the second half kicked off we were into party mode and there was just no stopping that juggernaut once it had started. As anarchic as the man himself, and every bit as spellbinding, the show finally ended with everyone on their feet chanting Angus’s name at 11.30pm.

With half an hour to go there were parties going on in every dressing room backstage, fiddlers sessioning, mandolin players rehearsing, pipers warming up, Rajasthanis jamming with Thanks to Donald Shaw and everyone at Celtic Galicians, and stories of Angus being shared in Connections, Shooglenifty were able to focus their grief and the appetite for public tribute into every corner. The documentary production crew, who had re-focused their energies into recording Numerous people missed their last train home, a concert for Angus at the Glasgow Royal but since the after party went on all night this the gig, were squeezed into a backstage Concert Hall this January. didn’t seem to be too much of a problem. It’s cupboard, and camera operators were taking 62 musicians - all people who had what he would have wanted …

The video of the concert includes 90 minutes of Shooglenifty’s performance from 21 January and also features the following players: Fiddle: Adam Sutherland, Charlie McKerron, Duncan Chisholm, Eilidh Shaw, Gavin Marwick, Laura Wilkie. Mandolin: Iain Macleod, Laura Beth Salter, Nick Prescott. Bass/percussion: Conrad Molleson. Percussion: Donald Hay, Mattie Foulds, Tom Bancroft, Aida Tarrio, Toby Shippey. Their pop sound was not to last, however, as in the 90s they took an experimental turn, and demonstrated their abilities to slip in and out of a multitude of styles, including jazz. After the six albums of exploration, the Kane brothers felt compelled to go their separate ways and pursue individual creative outlets. The hiatus was short lived, ending in 2005 when the revitalised Kane brothers were inspired to return to their pop roots albeit with a modern, matured outlook. 2008’s ‘Open Soul’ was followed by the seasonal offering ‘Xmasday’, 2012’s funk inspired ‘Hot Wire’, a reworking of Remote entitled Remote: Major To Minor and ‘September Songs’, an intriguing album of Frank Sinatra covers.

On Vinyl Noise now ..... TRACK OF THE MONTH: The Peak Beneath The Sea // We Came From Wolves by Jamie Hart We Came from Wolves have earned a reputation as one of Scotland’s best upcoming bands since their formation in 2011. Their 2015 self-titled album was a successful blend of alt rock/pop that won them many plaudits including a Scottish alternative music award for “Best Rock”. The confidence that emits from the band is strikingly noticeable in new single, The Peak Beneath the Sea. Raw, punchy riffs are laced with a fluctuating lyrical delivery from frontman Kyle Burgess while backing screams punctuate most of the track. This changing pace can be felt most when drummer, Andy Donaldson is let loose during the chorus. It is commendable to hear a band try something new and even better when they succeed as well as We Came From Wolves have on The Peak Beneath the Sea. The track is a taste of what is to come as the band plan to go back into the recording studio to begin work on a second album this year.

Lyrics and melodies to express feelings, responses and reactions to people and places encountered.

Putting down a marker for all rock bands in 2017, Thula Borah have produced one of the best records you're likely to hear all year, creating a sound that defies any one genre; switching seamlessly from post-rock, posthardcore and dream-pop to grunge, indie-rock and emo. Indeed, Thula Borah have taken post-hardcore sensibilities and fuzzed out, meaty riffs and amalgamated them with catchy hooks that demand your attention.

Stories Untold

Crossing Borders

To Be Free

Stories Untold is an intimate and inspiring collection of original songs, tackling topics including child soldiers, crime and punishment, loss, and love in its many forms. Early responses have been positive, with five stars from Spiral Earth, and album of the week from Iain Anderson and Celtic Music Radio.

‘Crossing Borders’ was a Celtic Connections commission in 2015 written for a nine piece ensemble and represents Graham's musical journey to date, reflecting on places, people and musical styles that have influenced him and his music. The piece draws on vibrant Scottish, Irish and Cape Breton styles and is written in four sections, each highlighting one of these cultures. It brings together a fusion of traditional and classical styles in his own composition.

To Be Free is an interim project - in between albums number one and two - for Glasgow's Martha L. Healy. Including two originals and two of Martha's favourite country classics, the EP was recorded with her band over a snowy weekend in Glasgow in January 2016.

The Vivians 10th Anniversary Demos Album #TheVivians10yr - To mark their 10th anniversary of forming, cult indie punk band The Vivians will release a collection of songs spanning their tumultuous career. The self-titled album, digitally released 26th August 2016, will comprise newly mastered unreleased demos and rarities, recorded between 2006 and 2010, accompanied by a new video and artwork. Formed in August 2006, The Vivians dared to dream big and set out to achieve great things. From their humble beginnings in a basement rehearsal room in Edinburgh, through to splitting in April 2010, the band’s story is one of dreams, misguidance and brotherhood.

Wild Things is the first release from East Lothian Alt-Folk singer songwriter Baron Salmon. The four songs are tender tales of moving on, each one showcasing the musicianship, the fine singing and the mature songwriting of their creator. In these songs we also glimpse some of his influences, from Dylan to Bonnie Prince Billy, to Tallest Man on Earth, whilst never losing sight of the exciting new sound that belongs to Baron Salmon.

Oceans are an anthemic alternative rock band from Glasgow, Scotland. Influenced by varied range of acts; 30 Seconds To Mars, Explosions In The Sky, Thrice, and U2, Oceans' sound is a mix of powerful, soulful vocals with sing along choruses to soaring, melodic lead guitar, and rhythm with a punch.

Carnival Fifty Six Dundee 12-13 August Carnival Fifty Six, the major new music festival taking place on Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 August at Camperdown Park in Dundee, in association with 71 Brewing – Dundee’s urban craft brewery - has announced a lineup that marks out the weekend as a highlight of this summer.

Midstock is an independent, bespoke festival which we started in order to provide the Lothians community with a great event on their doorsteps. This is still at the core of what we’re trying to do but we have seen the festival expand somewhat and we’ve welcomed people from all over the country in the last couple of years. Maybe word is out that we like a good party here in Midlothian!” www.midstockfestival.com
