BBC SCOTLAND's 'Hip Hop' Season to celebrate the culture that has grown since the 1980s From Sunday 16 June 16 to Friday 21 June BBC Scotland is set to unwrap a season of hip hop programmes in mid-June. The week-long season of programmes will celebrate the street culture which has grown and developed in Scotland since the 80s, with its own spectrum of emerging and established stars but is largely unheralded by mainstream media. The programming on the new BBC Scotland channel will run from Sunday 16 June to Friday 21 June. A cornerstone of this new season will be a major new documentary, Loki’s History of Scottish Hip Hop. Award winning author Darren 'Loki’ McGarvey reveals the History of Scottish hip hop and how over the last 30 or so years it has spawned a revolutionary street-level culture in cities and towns across the country.

Loki :: www.facebook.com/MistaLoki

Louise Thornton, Commissioning Executive at BBC Scotland, said: “A vibrant and dynamic street-level culture through urban Scotland, from Inverness to Dundee, Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Glasgow, hip hop has been with us for decades but somehow always just under the radar of the mainstream.

A rapper, who turned that skill into cultural commentating and writing with his breakthrough first book Poverty Safari, Darren – in the opening minutes of the documentary – says: “For me hip hop started “This season looks at how it has become a here in Pollok … channel for creativity, ‘bubbling under the “Feeling isolated and culturally alienated in a surface’ of more mainstream Scottish culture, reflecting people’s lives and issues in modern idioms and terms. The season is looking at hip hop as a cultural phenomenon but also as a social movement.” Among the other highlights will be a new documentary in which an emerging female star of the movement reflects on a sexual assault and how she copes with the aftermath through performance.

If it wasn’t for hip hop I wouldn’t be where I am now.” The documentary goes through the four ‘pillars’ of hip hop from break-dancing, graffiti art to deejaying, and then latterly MCing, which we now know as rapping.

There will also be a screening of Lumo: Too Young to Die. In 2017, Calum Barnes took his own life. The Glasgow rapper, also known as Lumo, was a popular figure on the city’s hip hop scene, but privately he was deeply troubled. Calum’s battles with mental health are documented in the film through his own video diaries, discovered after his death. One BBC SCOTLAND programme coming up on Thursday 20 June is TUNE, a new latenight music show, with this episode featuring Darren ‘Loki’ McGarvey with an exclusive track from his forthcoming new album. Providing the international context of the story of hip hop is a film from American director Alex Jordanov. The Game: Hip Hop takes the story of the movement from the street to Wall Street, outlining how this culture has gone global as lifestyle and a multi-billion dollar industry. Among those featured in the film are 50 Cent, Ice T, Chuck D, Young Thug, Grandmaster Caz, and Melle Mel.

Looking back at over 30 years of culture, Loki speaks to the pioneers in music, dance and art. It is a story of young men and women in Scotland overcoming adversity to express themselves in often challenging circumstances. This new documentary, by Sasquatch Productions, also explores status in culture and language and how young people in the eighties caught on to an industry now worth ten billion dollars a year but whose ‘stars’ are still relatively unknown. Throughout the week there will be hip hop performances and related items on For many it provided something even more @BBCScotland social media. Jill Rodger, Director of Glasgow Jazz Festival and host of the Scottish Jazz Awards, said: “The Scottish Jazz Awards are about honouring some of the most talented and revered musicians in the industry. The public and the panel did not have an easy feat deciding which of Scotland’s exceptional jazz musicians should receive these awards – huge congratulations to everyone who was nominated, and to all of our winners. The recognition is richly deserved.”

This year the Scottish Jazz Awards teamed up with a new charity partner Help Musicians The Scottish Jazz Awards are hosted as an independent event by the organisers of Glasgow Scotland to spread awareness of their frontline services and to raise vital funds to empower Jazz Festival and supported by the National Scottish musicians and those in the Scottish Lottery through Creative Scotland. music industry. This year’s Glasgow Jazz Festival will see more than 300 musicians play over 40 shows from Wednesday 19 to Sunday 23 June as the city comes alive with the sound of jazz, blues, soul, funk, R&B, electronic and world music. The Glasgow International Jazz Festival was founded in 1987, when Glasgow was bidding to become the European City of Culture for 1990. The city had studied the competition and worked out that all major cities in Europe had a jazz festival. If they had one, then so should Glasgow. From the very beginning, the Glasgow International Jazz Festival brought some of the biggest names of jazz to the City –1987’s programme included singer Sarah Vaughan, Chick Corea, Taj Mahal, Benny Carter and Carol Kidd. Other top headliners include Miles Davis (during the European City of Culture year 1990), Dizzy Gillespie, Buddy Guy, Michael Brecker and Tony Bennett.

Welsh harpist Catrin Finch and Senegalese kora maestro Seckou Keita are due to take to the road in Scotland this month for a tour of some of our iconic music venues, as well as some more intimate gigs in beautiful places. The award-winning duo will be swapping their tour bus for a campervan and will be hitting the road with harp and kora onboard to travel for a fortnight of dates which will include Tolbooth, Stirling; St Mary’s Space, Fasnacloich, Appin, Argyll; The Macphail Centre, Ullapool; An Lanntair, Stornoway; Aros Community Theatre, Portree; Eden Court, Inverness; The Lemon Tree, Aberdeen and East Neuk Festival, Fife.

double album cd / download Release Date: Out Now

Created over three years in three locations (Scotland/Chennai/Kolkata), Thacker’s third release creating new sound worlds through his immersion in Indian classical, folk and spiritual traditions is the epic double album Trikala (Sanskrit for the three tenses of time, past, present and future), featuring 13 performers from the subcontinent and Europe.

Reflections from an Airport is a must-buy album. It’s an album for busy people who have earned the right to take a moment to stop and let the world drift by. It’s for people who deserve ‘me time’. So indulge and treat yourself to some time away from the pressures that life may throw at you. The album has songs that will make you smile, make you laugh, make you cry and make you think. Drawn from life’s experiences, each song tells a story and paints a picture we can all relate too. It touches on basic human truths we all share in common... like love won and lost in all its guises. Andy writes songs for adults. His songs are for people who have lived a full life. For people who can relate to the highs and lows of daily living and know it’s not all ‘happy ever after but the ride can be fun.’ Listen to the songs and discover this for yourself.

JOHN GRAHAM & JIM JACK Sae Will We Yet album / cd / Release Date: out now

John Graham and Jim Jack’s debut album features an eclectic mix of many of the favourite songs from their live act with contributions from some of the most talented contemporary songwriters from Scotland and further afield. Graeme Miles’ haunting ‘Eldorado’ hints at a life of missed opportunities while Iain Ingram’s ‘Calton Rose’ and ‘Braes o’ Appin’ are love songs in the Scottish tradition and Steven Clark’s ‘Coming Home’ talks of the plight of the many refugees cast adrift in the world today. Jim King’s ‘West Coast Days’ and ‘Home To The Kyles’ from the pen of Duncan McCrone and Celly Paterson evoke memories of summer days on the Clyde Coast. From earlier days of the folk revival come Ewan MacColl’s ‘Manchester Rambler’ and Matt McGinn’s enigmatic ‘Magic Shadow Show’. John and Jim’s love of Americana is also represented in the rollicking ‘Truck Driving Man’. John and Jim’s act recalls much of the spirit of the folk clubs in the 60s and 70s with plenty of chorus singing and a fair measure of humour thrown in. scotland's new releases ..... album : single : ep / cd : vinyl : download JAMIE MACDONALD & CHRISTIAN GAMAUF The Pipe Slang

JON BUDWORTH Jon Budworth is a singer/songwriter originally from Lancashire but now very much an honorary Yorkshireman living in the bustling market town of Otley. Jon is a relative late-comer to the wonderful world of folk and acoustic music, having spent many years cast adrift in the dark and seedy underbelly of rock’n’roll. Jon changed musical direction in 2010 after happening upon a Youtube video of Richard Thompson playing his beautiful and evocative song Beeswing. There has been no looking back ever since! Jon cites his influences, amongst others, as John Renbourn, Nic Jones and, of course, Richard Thompson.

Listen/Watch: www.linskenscotland.scot/video/

The musical partnership of the Scottish pipes and fiddle is one that is quintessentially and historically Hebridean. Jamie MacDonald and Christian Gamauf have taken this format and incorporated influences from places such as Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia and Asturias in the north of Spain, putting their own stamp on the music. Jamie and Christian met while living and studying on the Isles of Uist and began playing together at local concerts and events. After travelling to Asturias on a musical and cultural exchange project, along with performances at Ceòl on the Croft, Celtic Connections and Celtic Colours Festivals, the duo started working on their debut album, The Pipe Slang. The album features the traditional music of the Hebrides and includes songs from the Isle of Tiree as well as self-penned material and tunes from further afield.

LINSEY AITKEN & KEN CAMPBELL Shore To Shore album / cd / Release Date: out now

This is our second CD as a duo, with a mixture of new songs and instrumentals, many focussing on our Scottish connections around the world, each with a story, and most of all about people and histories of the past and present. Fortunately, people seem to really like what we do, and ask what kind of music we perform. The answer is not one genre or another, but a blending of everyone and everything we have met along the way. A coming together of both our musical journeys, combined into one together, with elements of our respective musical backgrounds in Celtic, Classical, Traditional, Contemporary Music and all else. But most of all our music is about people, and all those who have influenced us and inspired us along the way.

PAUL ANDERSON

AULD NEW HEIDS

The High Summit

AULD NEW HEIDS - Volume 1

After many years as a well-known face on the band circuit, Bob Leslie’s re-invention of himself as an acoustic performer resulted in two well-received Americana CDs - In a Different World (2010) and Fat Cat (2011) - and a re-launch onto the folk circuit. There, his highly-crafted songs - some serious, some very funny indeed - had audiences showing lively appreciation. However, more and more, Bob found himself drawn to the challenge of writing in a more traditional Scottish vein - a medium, as it turned out, ideal for a musical storyteller.

Paul Anderson from Royal Deeside in Aberdeenshire is one of Scotland’s finest traditional fiddle players and The High Summit is his third album of self penned music and song. Like The Singing Land and Land of the Standing Stones before it, The High Summit celebrates the history, landscape and people of Paul’s beautiful North-East homeland. Joining Paul on The High Summit are a group of exceptional artists, highly respected in their own right and adding their own touch of magic to the album. Shona Donaldson on vocals (Scots Singer of the Year 2009 and first female winner of the Bothy Ballad Champion of Champions), Tony McManus on guitar (worldrenowned Scottish guitarist now based in Canada), Malcolm Jones on guitar and accordion (Runrig), Ale Carr on Cittern (Dreamer’s Circus), Ali Napier on keyboards (Miami Vince and former member of the Dougie MacLean Band) and James Gorgon on percussion (Albany show band and The Cutting Edge).

A quartet of four of Scotland’s most experienced performers brings together the vocal talents of brothers IAN and FRASER BRUCE along with the exceptional musical skills of PETE CLARK on fiddle and GREGOR LOWREY on accordion. Putting down a marker for all rock bands in 2017, Thula Borah have produced one of the best records you're likely to hear all year, creating a sound that defies any one genre; switching seamlessly from post-rock, posthardcore and dream-pop to grunge, indie-rock and emo. Indeed, Thula Borah have taken post-hardcore sensibilities and fuzzed out, meaty riffs and amalgamated them with catchy hooks that demand your attention.
