Latin American Summer Solstice Night of Music and Poetry Edinburgh : 21 June : www.vocesdelsur.co.uk

Scots-based Chilean singer, Valentina Montoya Martínez has announced a Latin American Summer Solstice Night of Song and Poetry in Edinburgh's Café Life in Stockbridge, on the 21 June of course!

Chamber and has established herself as the leading Latin American female voice in the UK with her own group Valentina and Voces del Sur. Committed to the diffusion of Latin American folk music, she has also facilitated other musical events in Scotland, notably two Quilapayún concerts last year. She will be reading the poems of Chilean laureates Pablo Neruda and Gabriela Mistral and singing folk songs from Chile as well as her own material with her band, which she co-founded with her Scots partner, guitarist David Russell.

Edinburgh-based band Valentina and Voces del Sur will host a concert of Latin American folk music and poetry this summer solstice, with guest musician, Argentine bandoneón player, Roberto Rabinovich. The concert will take place on 21 June at Café Life, Stockbridge, and is part of Chilean singer Valentina Montoya Martínez’ new initiative of combining Latin America’s music and poetry in a cultural evening rooted in Chile’s tradition of Peñas (a meeting place for musicians, artists and lovers of folk song, poetry and grassroots culture).

Roberto Rabinovich is an Argentine bandoneón player based in Edinburgh. He studied the bandoeón with Sebastián Jarupkin, Víctor Villena and Juanjo Mosalini and subsequently formed the tango quartet Orquesta Atípica. He has played with Mr McFall’s Chamber and Valentina and Voces del Sur amongst others. Recently one of his compositions was presented in the show “Star Crossed” in Palma de Mallorca’s Opera House. Through the heart-wrenching, melancholy sounds of his bandoneón Roberto will be conjuring echoes of this impassioned genre and will be reading a selection of Horacio Ferrer’s tango poetry.

Valentina Montoya Martínez, a second generation exile from Chile, has gained recognition in Scotland through her longstanding musical collaboration with Mr McFall’s

Piazzolla,” Roberto said. “I deeply enjoy bringing the sounds of the bandoneón to this wonderful city and sharing a little bit of our dreams with its people. It is always a pleasure working with Valentina, we hope to be doing more of this kind of material together. I admire her initiative to create this kind of space which welcomes kindred spirits and those curious to know more about Latin American culture.” Asked what this type of event means to her, Valentina said: “As it is summer solstice, I hope people will feel inspired, invigorated and

rejuvenated by Latin American’s songs and poetry. In Latin America music and poetry are often intricately linked and this type of evening is a manifestation of that artistic embrace. We want to share it with you on this night of renewal!”

GRIT: The Martyn Bennett Story by Eala MacAlister

Druimfin, Mull from 20-22 June : www.corabissett.co.uk This is very much a story that should be told and by using Martyn's own music it's like he's partly telling his story himself. Directed by Cora and written by one of Scotland's brightest writing talents, Kieran Hurley, in collaboration with Cora and the company, the show promises to be a visually spectacular theatrical exploration of one of Scotland's most innovative musical maverick visionaries, Martyn Bennett, who stormed the underground music scene in the 90s with his unique blend of songs from the Gaelic tradition of the west highlands and the travellers tradition, spliced with cutting edge dance music. The show will take you through Martyn’s incredible life journey - unveiling the story of his phenomenal musical imagination, passion, fierce love of life, music, the country and people who inspired his ground-breaking creations, and his fight against the cancer which ultimately robbed him of his short life at 33. The cast includes Sandy Grierson as Martyn Bennett, Gerda Stevenson as Margaret Bennett and Hannah Donaldson as Kirsten Bennett.

Tucked away in the Southside of Glasgow is the Tramway theatre where a diverse crew of actors, dancers, choreographers and even a trapeze artist are deep into rehearsals for a new production by Cora Bissett. Today they are ready to give a sneak peak of what they've been working on.

look around for funding – serendipitously – the Commonwealth Fund was launched and they were keen to support work that celebrates Scottish culture but from a very internationalist viewpoint. I can’t think of anything more apt! They were very keen that we connect with Commonwealth partners, and with Martyn having dual heritage, being born in Canada, I just thought – this is perfect. I worked with Canadian partners to reflect his dual heritage, also there’s a big Gaelic speaking population in Canada and a very spiritual bond between the two countries – and so it just started to feel so right. I was confident that I’d be able to get the funding for this." Says Bissett. Above all the production is as much about Martyn the man as Martyn the musician which may help it appeal to people less familiar with his music. It had been Bissett's intention from the start to tell it in this way: "I don’t feel that he’s been forgotten about, but I think the story is of Martyn as a human being, and what he achieved in his short life – no-one’s really told that as a drama. And I think, for a whole new generation… when I speak to people who are maybe in their twenties, most of them don’t know who Martyn Bennett is and I thought ‘That is a real shame, what can I do about that? I can tell his story. That’s my job – I tell his story and it opens it up to a whole new generation of people. That was the motivating factor – let’s celebrate this guy." explains Bissett.

GRIT: The Martyn Bennett story aims to tell the story of the maverick piper and composer in a way that is every bit as creative as the man himself was. In the short scenes performed today (at a media pre-view) it certainly seems to have succeeded in that. There's a great mix of skills on display. In one scene trapeze artist Maxime Yelle performs incredible aerial acrobatics to the strains of Bennett's Blackbird. In another scene depicting Martyn's introduction to the club culture that was to be a big part of his short life there is a fusion of modern and highland dance with Sandy Grierson, who plays Martyn Bennett, Everyone involved in the project taking it all in and thinking about seems hugely enthusiastic about it what he could do with this music. and this comes across in the performance. Martyn's duel Scots/ The initial idea for the production Canadian heritage (he lived in came when Cora Bissett revisited Canada until he was six) is GRIT for the first time in a while: "It celebrated with the choreographer wasn’t until recently that I revisited and trapeze artist coming from GRIT. Something just sparked in me Canada to be part of the production. again. It’s just the life force coming Bisett is keen to see the production through that album, it’s live on after this summer and would extraordinary" she said. It was love to see it performed in Canada. fortuitous timing as the Before that it had a run in Glasgow Commonwealth Games Cultural in early June before moving to Mull Program opened up an avenue of where there will be a mini festival funding that was previously featuring the likes of Lau, Mr McFalls unavailable. Chamber and India Alba from 19 22nd June. "When I had the seed of the idea, being a small, independent Moving to Mull is not without it's company, we had to think about problems explains Bissett: "That's where we were going to get funding going to be a challenge, for sure, for this. So as we were starting to but it’s a challenge we’re preparing

Martyn Bennett : www.martynbennett.com

for right from the start. The main part of the set can be split into a smaller section for the stage on Mull. We can’t do the trapeze work on Mull because the ceiling isn’t high enough for the rig, so we’re going to replace that with a Chinese pole artist. The acrobatics take place on a ground-based pole – so you still get that same feeling of something

very beautiful, a kind ascension – take off."

RSNO :

album : 'Till Tomorrow'

release date - 23 June : buy @ www.linnrecords.com/recording-till-tomorrow.aspx To be released on Linn Records on 23 June, “Till Tomorrow” is the unique collaboration between Dougie MacLean and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, and marks this legendary artist’s 40th anniversary as a musician. Ahead of the release Dougie performed the album with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra at Glasgow Royal Concert Hall in June.

“2014 marks the 40th anniversary of my career as a musician so to have the privilege of working with such a talented collection of musicians is a dream come true. To play my songs with the beauty and power of the Royal National Symphony Orchestra behind me is an incredible experience and truly makes me feel like I am lifting off the stage!” says Dougie.

Dougie MacLean needs no introduction; as a singer, songwriter, composer and instrumentalist, no artist captures the soul of Scotland with more authenticity or emotion. Originally famed for writing the song Caledonia, Dougie has teamed up with conductor John Dougie MacLean : photo by Rob McDougall Logan and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra to bring a new and beautiful symphonic dimension to his best-loved songs on his debut career. Working with close collaborator and orchestrator John Logan “Till Tomorrow” does just this. “The orchestral arrangements add a whole new dimension to the music, which spans my whole

album : 'Gia Valentina'

release date - out now : buy @ http://giavalentina.bandcamp.com/ Newly-signed Scottish band GIA VALENTINA launched their debut album at Glasgow's G2 in Glasgow recently. The Coatbridge-based six-piece alternative outfit are the first act to be signed to new independent Scottish label CAVE WALL RECORDS. Since making their first demo as a band in January 2013, Gia Valentina have been gigging around Glasgow while writing and recording the ten-track, self-titled album, which will be issued on both CD and vinyl. The band – vocalist Steven Warnock, guitarists John McArthur and Ciaran ‘Cheesy’ Febers, bass guitarist Andrew Tracey, drummer Anton Lafferty and keyboard player and vocalist Amy Robertson performed at the launch in front of a 350-strong audience. Steven said: “We are extremely excited at the launch of our first album and sharing our music to a wider audience. We are grateful to Cave Wall Records for giving us this chance and we look forward to a long and successful relationship.” David Lang, Cave Wall Studios manager, said he first worked with Gia Valentina just over a year ago: “I was working as a sound engineer and they came to me to record their first E.P together as a band. When the E.P was finished I knew they had something and that they needed to be heard. We made a point of tracking their progress as a band from then. When we felt we were in the right position, there was really no other band we wanted as our first signing. The band’s following is growing day by day and the launch night is not just about the new album, but also about taking their music to a new level and a new audience.” David said Cave Wall decided to issue the album on vinyl as well as CD as sales of the format have risen sharply in recent years: “The growth in vinyl sales, especially in the independent market, has beaten the other main hardcopy media format of CD. Also, as a label, we feel there is a charm with vinyl that can’t be replicated any other way. For Cave Wall Records, vinyl is the way to go.” Gia Valentina are also in the line-up for an all-day gig at the Eagle Inn in Coatbridge on 9 August, alongside acts including Pronto Mama and The Velveteen Saints.

PATRICIA MORRIS

EMILIO LARGO

…sleekit slivers…

Between New Year & Valentine

Derealise

Singer-Songwriter Patricia Morris is a classic storyteller in the finest Celtic Tradition. With a rare purity of tone and an impressive vocal range, her wider musical catalogue ranges from Gershwin, to Schubert, to Burns, but it is her Scottish and Irish roots she is most influenced and defined by as revealed in her songwriting. These are her latest offerings of Blues and Folk inspired songs.

After parting ways with former guitarist Joe Wyman, we took on board a new guitarist, Andrew Beveridge. The chemistry was instant and we began writing the follow up to our debut EP 'In Uniform We Divide'. Taking a more straight forward approach to song writing this time, we focused on melody and harmonies whilst still retaining elements of what sculpted the sound of 'IUWD'. Drawing on elements from bands like Oceansize, Arcane Roots and Fall of Troy, it is a further progression of our sound.

This recording features the same song-writing partnership of John Coletta & David Fitzpatrick, that had success with the "Humpff Family" but unlike his last solo project "...living in hope..." John made the decision this time to involve other musicians, inviting whoever had recently impressed him, and was available to contribute. So, we have Pete Rabjohns on drums, Frankie McGuire on the cajon, Lorna Thomas (www. lornathomas.com) and Kenny Gair on the bass and Tom Roche on the button accordion. This also means that it may be possible to form a credible "band" to perform these tracks, and the artwork by Gordon Campbell is a delight www.mucklearts.com Listen/Watch: http://johncoletta.com Available from: www.amazon.co.uk www.amazon.com www.birnamcdshop.com iTunes, Amazon MP3, Spotify

Fight Or Flight

Niagarama

The Hazy Shades debut EP, 'Fight Or Flight' is a statement of intent about rock n roll dreams and desires.

How to Swim is the brainchild of Scottish BAFTAwinning writer and composer Gregor Barclay. Although known for their expansively orchestrated recorded work and a similarly maximalist approach to the idea of band size, the group is currently operating as a lean sixpiece, comprising members of The Second Hand Marching Band, The Martial Arts and the now-defunct Mother and The Addicts. Their forthcoming sophomore full-length, Niagarama, is a concept album of sorts, exploring the loss of youth and how we process it.

James is an acoustic singer/ songwriter based in London. James brings a lot to his music - honest story telling from Folk, Pain and Passion from Blues, hooks from pop and all with an indie edge. James' live performance is engaging, honest and mesmerising. His personality is charismatic and contagious.

'It’s Not Enough' conjures up the atmosphere of a sundrenched road-trip on America’s Pacific Coast Highway, with its slight air of melancholy, and gentle dappled sunlight that’s all the more precious because it feels so transitory.

scotland's new releases ..... album : single : ep / cd : vinyl : download DEATHCATS All Hail Deathcats Album vinyl Release Date: 9 June 'All Hail Deathcats' is the debut LP from Glasgow based trio, Deathcats. Side A contains what the band consider to be their pop numbers; short and sweet pop songs packed with melodies, sing-along choruses and soaked in reverb. Side B reveals their heavier elements; greatly influenced by long drives to shows on a strict audio diet of Thee Oh Sees and Black Sabbath. COPPER DOGS

THE DEADLY WINTERS

The Balvenie Maltings Sessions

Sixteen Days

Copper Dogs are a band of self-confessed whisky fanatics who recorded their debut album on the traditional floor maltings of The Balvenie Distillery. Inspired by their passion for whisky and the whiskymaking process, their songs are mostly ‘blends’ or ‘mash-ups’ of songs from across the years. Copper Dogs are named after the copper tubes known as ‘dipping dogs’ that distillery workers used to store down their trouser legs and dip into casks to ‘liberate’ some whisky

Based on the true story of our bassist Mike Edie's own grandfather, Sixteen Days tells the staggering tale of how a young man, Stewart Ross MBE, saved his crew mates after their ship, The Inversuir, was torpedoed, and then kept them alive for 16 days in a lifeboat before being rescued. This is one story we would like you to remember.

Believe

“Homeward” is Dropkick’s most varied and accomplished collection of songs to date, demonstrating a growing maturity in their song writing and arrangements. But it is their ear for melody and harmony that are their finest assets, helping Dropkick’s music appeal to a growing band of fans of all ages, all around the world.

‘Believe’ was recorded in legendary Glasgow studio CaVa Sound , Aaron Murray frontman of the band and songwriter said about the single: "Believe is a song that is written about two people who love each other but have both had difficult lives and this puts strain on their relationship, to the point where they need time apart to learn to appreciate one another. It's all about learning to trust each other, taking that big step and putting faith in someone you feel so much towards."
