18 year old James Nicolson wins RSNO's composers competition Eighteen year old James Nicolson from Kirkwall has won Scotland’s national orchestra’s Notes From Scotland, its annual composition competition specifically for 12-18 year olds based in Scotland. The theme for the second Notes From Scotland was sourced from Scotland’s contemporary architecture: Maggie’s Highlands; Pier Arts Centre, Orkney; The Scottish Parliament, Edinburgh; Shettleston Housing Association, Glasgow, and Dundee Contemporary Arts Centre. In partnership with the Festival of Architecture 2016 and as part of the Year of Innovation, Architecture and Design, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra’s (RSNO) Notes From Scotland invited young composers to write a two-minute work for an instrumental trio, quartet or quintet. Following the closing date for entries in May five works were chosen to be performed by an RSNO ensemble at the Orchestra’s new auditorium at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall last Saturday evening. A panel of judges including Scottish composer Jennifer Martin selected James Nicolson’s work White Oasis, inspired by the architecture of the recently-restored Pier Arts Centre in Stromness, as the winning entry. James receives an iPad with music software packages included, as well as VIP access to future RSNO concerts.

Notes From Scotland 2016 winner James Nicolson: “I first heard of the Notes From Scotland through my music teacher who encouraged me to enter a piece into the competition. Before this, the only music writing I had really done was for my music exams so I enjoyed the challenge of writing a more involved composition. “The day of the final was incredible. Hearing the other finalists’ pieces and getting to meet the other young composers from across Scotland and hearing what inspired their pieces was fantastic. One of the highlights of the whole competition was the rehearsal where the young composes discussed with members of the RSNO how we wanted our compositions to be played. Watching these highly skilled musicians at work was a huge honour and their efficiency and professionalism was awe-inspiring. The whole competition is a fantastic idea and I am thrilled to have been part of such a special event.” Fellow Notes From Scotland competitor Tom Aitken, whose Piano Quintet No1 was performed on Saturday by the RSNO ensemble and pianist Julia Lynch, will receive a Royal audience, having been chosen to be performed at the official opening of the fifth session of the Scottish Parliament in the presence of the Orchestra’s patron Her Majesty The Queen and Members of the Scottish Parliament, on Saturday 2 July. Presiding Officer Ken Macintosh MSP: “Tom Aitken’s piece perfectly encapsulates a day at the Scottish Parliament building – there’s passion, urgency, discord, reflection, and ultimately, harmony. The Scottish Parliament is delighted that it will be played before Her Majesty The Queen and our other guests at the opening of the fifth session of Parliament.

MacRae hosted free workshops for entrants at each of the inspiring buildings across Scotland (DCA; Shettleston Housing Association; Pier Arts Centre; The Scottish Parliament; Maggie’s Highlands). The participants were given tours of the sites before receiving an introductory guide to composing to a theme.

Notes From Scotland 2017 will be announced later in the year but for more information visit the competition website, Composer Jennifer Martin: "The variety of www.notesfromscotland.co.uk, or contact the “It is wonderful to see new musical talent like work we see in the course of this initiative is Tom Aitken emerging from Scotland. This week his second album 'Stop For the World' reached number five in the UK iTunes Singer Songwriter chart and is climbing the charts in America, Lithuania and Nepal with similar success, all through word of mouth. For Michael Forsyth, its only ever been about the music. Whether he is playing it, singing it or seeing his favourite artists in concerts, he lives for it. Never far from a guitar, Michael's lyrics and melodies flow quickly and freely and yet despite this innate talent, his sister Kimberley says he has never really known just how good a writer he is. Michael cites his father Colin as his mentor and inspiration. It was Colin who first passed him a guitar and taught him how to play. The guitar soon became an identifying factor throughout the young musician's hometown of Huntly, Aberdeenshire - "Michael Forsyth, the one that plays guitar?" Michael spent his school years playing in bands with his friends, performing at charity events, singing outside the local supermarket, singing anywhere. His album is the culmination of years of work, perfecting his playing and putting all his spare time into creating this collection of songs, whether sitting at the kitchen table in his parents' home, or in his garden watching his children at play. Putting pen to paper and letting the lyrics and melodies flow is Michael's passion.

scotland's new releases ..... album : single : ep / cd : vinyl : download ALLAN MACDONALD & NEIL JOHNSTONE The Bruce 700

Album - cd - Release Date: Out Now This CD is the culmination of a much earlier celebration, in music and song, of ‘The Wallace’ in 2005, by way of a commission from Alasdair Campbell who was then with The Tolbooth Music and Arts venue in Stirling. This was followed by another commission by Carolyn Paterson in 2014 to celebrate another icon of history of whom we know a good bit more than the former, Robert de Brus of Norman French stock, the 14th C warlord who became King, regaining Scotland’s place as an Independent nation. This orchestrated progression of music ranges from an arrangement of a classic traditional pibroch theme, in its most appropriate animated and rhythmic presentation, to specially composed and arranged pieces. Melodies are presented on a range of pipes in several different keys, overlaid and blended with percussion, clarsach, cello, soprano saxophone, violin, whistle and vocals. B-Sides

One Kiss Later

David Altair has just released his 6th album entitled ‘B-Sides’. This is some work that was previously never released and is quite rare. The album has quite a psychedelic feel to it especially ‘we can’t stop now (the Wall)’. The album flows into a journey of ambient sounds and experimentation.

Ashton Lane are part of a new wave of homegrown modern country music originating in the UK and are sure to expand their growing fan base this year. The single One Kiss Later is out on 29 February 2016 Ashton Lane consist of Esther O’Connor and Tim O’Connor. The band performs as a duo but at times as a three piece when Graeme Duffin (Wet Wet Wet) joins them as guest guitarist. The band has a romantic back story, being husband and wife and also come from fine musical stock. Esther O’Connor’s musical heritage however spans right back to her childhood. She remembers being out on tour at only five years of age with Elton John on his US tour accompanying her Dad’s band Wet Wet Wet.
