Study the skills of songwriting at a unique workshop with Gretchen Peters in Edinburgh DHM Concerts bring you a unique opportunity to study for two days with Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame Inductee Gretchen Peters, one of America’s leading songwriters, in Edinburgh’s prime music venue The Queen's Hall on 28 and 29 July. The two-day workshop with Gretchen will include: Writing authentically: how to build the back story for your characters; Using detail and imagery; How to keep your sense of creative play alive and when to “invite the editor” into the writing room; Finding the melody; How to arrange a song; song critiques & sharpening skills with Gretchen; One-on-One session with Gretchen; and a group song circle. Limited places cost £320 and you can book now on 0131 620 2019. Gretchen said this about songwriting: "One of the oldest phrases in any language must be ‘tell me a story.’ Songwriting is storytelling, and telling your story in a compelling way is all about detail. It’s about what you say, and what you don’t say. It’s about the truth, not necessarily the facts. In this workshop, we’ll explore the process of songwriting—the art and the craft, and the delicate balance between the two. We’ll learn how to keep a sense of creative play and when (and how) to welcome the inner critic into the room. We’ll find ways to work through “writer’s block.” We’ll learn that only through the specific do you achieve the universal— and that’s the holy grail in songwriting and all writing. We write to find country's upper echelon of contemporary composers." 'Blackbirds' follows out who we are, and in the process we find out we are not alone." Peters' 2012 album 'Hello Cruel World,' which NPR called "the album of Inducted into the prestigious Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2014, her career" and Uncut said "establishes her as the natural successor to Gretchen Peters has long been one of Music City's most beloved and Lucinda Williams." The Jellyman's Daughter to open show for The California Feetwarmers at Glasgow's CCA Masters of ragtime, Dixieland blues and early swing, The California Feetwarmers are renowned for an earthy depth of character that sets them apart from others who have followed that throwback path to New Orleans , Circa 1920.

Their boisterous on-stage antics are solidly underpinned by playing that is as close to the source as it can be.

The Jellyman's Daughter

Based in Los Angeles, the band dusts down and re-works old classics, re-visiting material from The Blue Ridge Playboys, Scott Joplin, The Memphis Jugband and Emile Grimshaw’s Rag Pickers. In January, 2015, they played to 1000 revellers when they sold out Glasgow ’s Old Fruitmarket during Celtic Connections. Those who were lucky enough to get a ticket later reported it had been the biggest party the city had enjoyed since the 1990 City of Culture celebrations! Tom Jones is their latest fan, having caught them in action at Herp Albert’s legendary Beverly Hills club, The Vibrato. He urged them to seek out a date at London’s Ronnie Scott’s Club and told them: “Just say Tom Jones sent you!” “Should be on prescription for those who need

their spirits lifted!” – AmericanRootsUK

The Jellyman's Daughter is a Scottish duo featuring Emily Kelly (vocals, guitar, mandolin) and Graham Coe (vocals, cello). After making each other’s acquaintance in the inspiring setting of Edinburgh, Emily and Graham soon found an affinity in the way their voices combined and a new sound in the way they could combine cello and acoustic guitar or mandolin, with influences ranging from bluegrass to post-rock. Graham’s cello in particular added an unique element with his rhythmic, percussive and unconventional playing. GIGnotes ..... Bagpipes travel 4000 miles to give new young players a chance to learn A recent campaign by the Scottish Schools Pipes and Drums Trust to find old bagpipes to give new young players in Scotland a better chance of being able to learn piping, received global backing when an American woman sent her treasured pipes more than 4000 miles to support the cause! Andi Gamblin, from Kansas, heard about the Scottish Schools Pipes and Drums Trust’s Bagpipe Amnesty over the internet. After seeing a Facebook post about the campaign from the well know Scottish Piper, Donald McBride, Andi immediately arranged for her beloved Kintail pipes to be sent the 4,227 miles to the Trust’s Edinburgh HQ. Although she has no direct Scottish roots, 44 year old Andi has been piping for the last 15 years and has since travelled across USA playing with various pipe bands, and currently plays with the Kansas City St Andrews Pipes and Drums. She wanted to donate her bagpipes - her first set - in order to give children in Scotland the chance to share the same opportunities and pleasures of playing the pipes that she has experienced. Andi said: “It is hard to part with my pipes because they have been through so much with me. But after my husband surprised me with a new set of pipes for our 11th wedding anniversary, it makes no sense to have them sitting around for sentimental reasons when a child, who would otherwise not have the opportunity to play, could have their life enriched. “I first started playing the pipes in 2001 in California and I fell in love with the instrument straight away. My first set of pipes have served me well

“I am delighted to be able to support this campaign. I am sure many people will have old pipes lying around and they don’t know what to do with them. It’s great that they can now donate to such a fantastic cause. “I have always wanted to travel to Scotland but haven’t yet been able to. Maybe one day soon I will be able to come over and hear the students play the pipes – and maybe even my original set!” The Trust has been set up because the vast majority of pupils in Scottish schools do not have the chance to learn the pipes and drums in the classroom on the same basis as other instruments. The Trust will loan donated pipes to young people who cannot afford to buy a set but who want to learn. Trust Chief Executive Alexandra Duncan said: “It is amazing that we are receiving messages of support and donations from around the world. It shows that piping is important to so many people. “We are delighted to receive these pipes from Andi and we hope that her generous donation will encourage others from across the globe to donate. “The SSPDT is helping more than 1000 children across the country to learn the pipes and drums in state schools. This includes youngsters from some of Scotland’s most deprived areas who would never have the chance to learn piping. “But with such a big programme – and with more young people interested in piping – we need pipes to take these young musicians to the next level.“ The SSPDT believe there must be hundreds of sets of pipes lying unused in cupboards and attics that could be given a new lease of life. If you would like to donate pipes contact SSPDT at alex.duncan@sspdt.org.uk and they’ll arrange a pick up from your home. Wallace Bagpipes are making a fantastic contribution by refurbishing pipes free of charge.

for 14 years, but it is time for them to be put to good use again.

The SSPST has 14 programmes running in 11 local authority areas where free piping lessons are being given. Album - cd - Release Date: Out Now This CD is the culmination of a much earlier celebration, in music and song, of ‘The Wallace’ in 2005, by way of a commission from Alasdair Campbell who was then with The Tolbooth Music and Arts venue in Stirling. This was followed by another commission by Carolyn Paterson in 2014 to celebrate another icon of history of whom we know a good bit more than the former, Robert de Brus of Norman French stock, the 14th C warlord who became King, regaining Scotland’s place as an Independent nation. This orchestrated progression of music ranges from an arrangement of a classic traditional pibroch theme, in its most appropriate animated and rhythmic presentation, to specially composed and arranged pieces. Melodies are presented on a range of pipes in several different keys, overlaid and blended with percussion, clarsach, cello, soprano saxophone, violin, whistle and vocals.
