Wide Days Music Convention Enjoyed Record Attendance The eighth Wide Days music convention in April has been hailed the most successful to date, with full event passes for the event selling out and showcases attracting a record 1,000 registrations from members of the public. Taking place in Edinburgh at Teviot Row House, the conference on day one attracted 250 delegates for panels on topics including artist development, the future of festivals, ticketing and utilising data from digital services to plan releases and tours. This was followed in the evening by seven emerging Scottish acts playing consecutive live shows, and a range of networking activities on the second day. “The feedback from delegates has been phenomenal, with 98% saying they are very likely or likely to recommend the event,” says Wide Days founder, Olaf Furniss, citing a survey of delegates taken at the end of the conference. Moreover, there was unprecedented interest in the showcase acts from both the public and industry delegates from labels and festivals. This year also saw organisers expand the
programme on day two, which was open to full ticket holders, adding to the activities which led to being named Best Networking Event at the Yearly Music Convention Awards. Participants were treated to a coach tour, followed by a keynote interview with Julie Weir (Music For Nations/Sony Music), lunch and whisky tasting on the stage of Edinburgh’s iconic Usher Hall. “The fact that the two-day tickets sold out, shows an increasing number of industry professionals are seeking opportunities to connect in less traditional environments,” adds Furniss, who personally oversees the networking day. “We will be seeking to build on this in 2018, while continuing to look at ways we can offer even better value for those only attending the conference and showcase.” This year saw Creative Scotland, Help Musicians, PRS Foundation and Eventbrite join existing event partners PPL, EUSA, University of the Highlands & Islands, the Scottish Music Industry Association, EmuBands and the BPI. “The added level of partnership support allowed us to provide more mentoring for the showcase acts, raise the overall production levels and offer a bursary-subsidised ticket to emerging musicians and industry practitioners,” says Furniss. “As a result, we have taken the event to a new level.” The showcase acts were: JR Green, Emme Woods, The Ninth Wave, The Spook School,

Declan Welsh & The Decadent West, The Vegan Leather and Vistas. ABOUT WIDE DAYS: Wide Days was launched in 2010 and is Scotland’s only music-business convention. In 2014 it was named Best Networking Event at the Yearly Music Convention Awards, was runner up in the same category in 2015 and was also nominated for Best Convention Venue in 2016. Wide Days has attracted key music industry players from both Europe and North America, and in 2014 featured a special focus on the German music market. The has hosted the launch of several ground-breaking initiatives including the Music Venue Trust, the Off Axis gigging network and Scotland's green festivals network.

Royal Conservatoire of Scotland joins forces with Gamelan Naga Mas for evening Indonesian music A celebration of gamelan music will enchant audiences in Glasgow when Royal Conservatoire of Scotland students stage a special concert with gamelan community group, Naga Mas on 14 June.
“For all its long history, gamelan is also a contemporary art form, with new music being regularly written and performed,” says Dr J Simon Van der Walt, Head of the Masters of Music programme at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.
“Gamelan has established a strong foothold outside Indonesia, with groups in many countries performing both traditional and new music.” Glasgow is the host to a set of instruments known as ‘Spirit of Hope’, brought to the city in 1991 in the wake of the Year of Culture. “The complete set of instruments is divided into two halves in two different tunings, known as pélog and sléndro,” said Dr Van der Walt. “The concert at the Royal Conservatoire will bring together, for the first time in many years, both halves of Gamelan Spirit of Hope: the instruments in the seven-note pélog tuning, played by Naga Mas, and the five-note sléndro instruments currently housed at the Conservatoire.” Tickets for the joint concert are available from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland Box Office: www.rcs.ac.uk/boxoffice.

A second gamelan concert, staged by Naga Mas, takes place in Glasgow’s Botanic Gardens at 7.30pm on Sunday, 18 June, part of the West End Festival. A family workshop runs from 45pm. The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and Naga Mas were selected by the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia as co-hosts for their 2017 artist-in-residency programme. Eminent Javanese musician and scholar Prasadiyanto has been working with Royal Conservatoire of Scotland music students and members of Naga Mas since March to develop a programme of traditional music from his home city of Solo. Prasadiyanto’s residency culminates in a special joint concert between the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and Naga Mas on Wednesday, 14 June at 7.30pm in the Conservatoire’s Ledger Recital Room. Gamelan is an orchestra of musical instruments from Indonesia and the word also refers to the music played by a gamelan. Gamelan has existed on the islands which make up the Indonesian archipelago for thousands of years, part of a complex cultural landscape of dance, performance and visual art.

wanted to create a stripped-down album of our trio that captures the magic of our live performances” says band cofounder and guitarist Molly Rose. The trio played two shows each night including their original compositions and a few crowd-favourite cover songs - to riveted audiences. “It was wonderful to be surrounded by some of our biggest fans”, says bassist Salley Williamson. Band co-founder and Deering-endorsing banjoist Eleanor Underhill adds “the beauty of the album is that it highlights our voices and showcases our lyricism in a way that you have never heard in any of our prior recordings.” Underhill Rose Live acts partly as a “best of” collection, showcasing the breadth of the trio’s catalogue in a stripped-down style that sounds and feels live. ‘Love Looks Good on You’ ponders true happiness and is glittered with Underhill’s harmonica, while ‘Little House’ showcases carefully crafted vocal harmonies. By melding styles across regions and ages, Ryan delivers uplifting rhythmic drive, depth of dynamics and a bold new heartbeat for Scottish traditional music. Voted ‘Up and Coming Artist of the Year’ at MG Alba Scots Trad Music Awards in December 2016, some memorable live performances have consolidated Ryan’s reputation in his home country. Ryan has now shared the bill with two of his musical influences: He supported fiddle player Martin Hayes at Celtic Connections this January, having previously been accompanied by guitarist Dennis Cahill onstage at Feakle Festival, Co Clare. A finalist from BBC Radio Scotland’s Young
traditional albums to be recorded in the UK in high resolution DSD format. This album places Ryan among a list of worldclass musicians who have worked with Jesse, including The Silk Road Ensemble, Yo-Yo Ma, Bela Fleck, Jan Vogler and Brooklyn Rider. Ryan is accompanied by James Ross on piano and Leo Forde on guitar. Jesse Lewis: "Ryan's playing is so soulful, beautiful and intoxicating, and his musical pacing is way beyond his years. It’s been a pleasure to work with someone so clearly passionate about, and dedicated to, his art. There's so much talent in this young man already, I can't wait to see what the future has in store." Ryan Young: "If I’d been told five years ago that I’d be recording my debut album with Jesse, I wouldn’t have believed it. The past year has been extraordinary and I feel I’ve grown immensely as a musician. Jesse has spurred me on to find new possibilities in my music and helped me find confidence I didn't know I had."

BLUEBIRDS :: ep :: 'There Is No God' release date - out now :: www.facebook.com/bluebirds1234
Edinburgh four-piece Bluebirds unveil their menacing selfreleased debut EP, There Is No God; the EP follows on from the clattering
brilliance of single ‘Subcultural Love’ with a set of wellcrafted, dark, punk love songs recorded over an extended period.
Recorded at Glasgow’s Green Door Studio with Stu Evans, after falling in love with the unique and modern take on vocals and old, warm sound created with that combo on The Amazing Snakeheads’ Amphetamine Ballads album, There Is No God came about from a band trying to find their sound, entering the studio for the first time in August 2015, and recording multiple album’s worth of songs before settling on this strong selection of tracks. After becoming disinterested with the sound and momentum of their last band, brothers Daniel and Jack Telford decided to learn from their experiences and formed Bluebirds. Choosing the right studio and taking their time to craft their own sound through influences that range from Northern Soul to Bowie and Berlinera Iggy Pop to Elvis himself. With lyrics that draw from the dark, lovelorn brilliance of Nick Cave and the unorthodox, brutally honest genius of Bukowski, Bluebirds explore themes of longing and frustrations with the world, bringing dark twisted scenarios to every day situations. Vocalist Daniel Telford describes his lyrics as such: “if my lyrics ever sound remotely political then they are 100% intended to be anti antiestablishment. I'm sorry if that
offends all the do gooders our there but it's just not something I’m interested in. I'd rather write about a really sharply dressed cannibal.” Live Bluebirds have wowed audiences with shows that grab you by the scruff of the neck and enchant you with an addictive, dark yet modern spin on post punk, performing to full rooms at city festivals Stag and Dagger and Tenement Trail and supporting the likes of And Yet It Moves in their hometown. Bluebirds are Daniel Telford (vocals/ guitar), Jack Telford (bass/vocals), Josef Benassi (organ/synth), Harris Le Derf (drums) www.facebook.com/bluebirds1234 www.soundcloud.com/bluebirds-band
ANDREW TAYLOR :: album :: 'From The Outside Looking In' release date - 10 June @ https://dropkickmusic.bandcamp.com/
This is the first solo album from Dropkick’s songwriter, front man and producer, drawing on influences such as Teenage Fanclub, Matthew Sweet and Elliott Smith to create his own blend of jangly powerpop.
‘From the Outside Looking In’ is the first solo recording by Andrew Taylor, front man, chief songwriter and producer of Scottish alt.country, powerpop band, Dropkick. This collection of songs were written at various points in the last 15 years and draw upon a variety of influences across different genres, mixing pop, alternative rock and Americana. The album was recorded at Dropkick’s rehearsal and recording studio in Edinburgh, Scotland during a 2 week period in 2016 with all instruments and vocals being performed and recorded by Andrew. As a founding member of Dropkick, Andrew has written, produced and released 14 albums and 3 EPs, as part of one of Scotland’s most prolific bands. The most recent Dropkick album, ‘Balance the Light’ was the band’s most successful and received very positive reviews. It was supported with the band’s first German shows, their 3rd headline tour of Spain and numerous Scottish shows. The album received significant airplay across the UK and Europe, including being featured as ‘Record of Note’ on BBC Radio Scotland’s Roddy Hart Show and with a live session on Radio Euskadi’s La Jungla Sonora show in Spain. Andrew will support the new album with his first solo acoustic concerts in Spain this summer and at the Belladrum Tartan Heart Festival in the Highlands in August.

On Vinyl Noise now ..... TRACK OF THE MONTH: The Peak Beneath The Sea // We Came From Wolves by Jamie Hart We Came from Wolves have earned a reputation as one of Scotland’s best upcoming bands since their formation in 2011. Their 2015 self-titled album was a successful blend of alt rock/pop that won them many plaudits including a Scottish alternative music award for “Best Rock”. The confidence that emits from the band is strikingly noticeable in new single, The Peak Beneath the Sea. Raw, punchy riffs are laced with a fluctuating lyrical delivery from frontman Kyle Burgess while backing screams punctuate most of the track. This changing pace can be felt most when drummer, Andy Donaldson is let loose during the chorus. It is commendable to hear a band try something new and even better when they succeed as well as We Came From Wolves have on The Peak Beneath the Sea. The track is a taste of what is to come as the band plan to go back into the recording studio to begin work on a second album this year.

Debut EP by 17 year old singer songwriter from Paisley funded by Paisley 2021 City of Culture bid and including four specially selected songs which reflect Lisa's personal and musical journey to date. Lyrics and melodies to express feelings, responses and reactions to people and places encountered.
Putting down a marker for all rock bands in 2017, Thula Borah have produced one of the best records you're likely to hear all year, creating a sound that defies any one genre; switching seamlessly from post-rock, posthardcore and dream-pop to grunge, indie-rock and emo. Indeed, Thula Borah have taken post-hardcore sensibilities and fuzzed out, meaty riffs and amalgamated them with catchy hooks that demand your attention.

The Poets and the Beats from Musician / producer Paul Armour (ex Seminal Glasgow Surf Pop Band “The Cuban Heels") “The album is very much a beat combo sound. Punchy with grooves using classic retro instruments: Rhodes Wurlitzer & Hammond, vintage amps and guitars. The feel is a mix of styles, melodic & rhythmic. Lyrically quirky with themes of hope and renewal. A recent review from Rock Fm. Scotland described the sound as “Weller-ish” but more refined! It’s all in the ear of the beholder. Stories Untold
Crossing Borders
To Be Free
Stories Untold is an intimate and inspiring collection of original songs, tackling topics including child soldiers, crime and punishment, loss, and love in its many forms. Early responses have been positive, with five stars from Spiral Earth, and album of the week from Iain Anderson and Celtic Music Radio.
‘Crossing Borders’ was a Celtic Connections commission in 2015 written for a nine piece ensemble and represents Graham's musical journey to date, reflecting on places, people and musical styles that have influenced him and his music. The piece draws on vibrant Scottish, Irish and Cape Breton styles and is written in four sections, each highlighting one of these cultures. It brings together a fusion of traditional and classical styles in his own composition.
To Be Free is an interim project - in between albums number one and two - for Glasgow's Martha L. Healy. Including two originals and two of Martha's favourite country classics, the EP was recorded with her band over a snowy weekend in Glasgow in January 2016.

Born and brought up in Inverness, Liza has been involved in folk music for many years. Although classically trained in piano, her family background of a big Glasgow-Irish clan of musicians and singers on her father's side, and the Gaelic song tradition of her mother's Isle of Lewis heritage, inevitably meant a strong pull towards the folk scene. On her first solo album of original songs and tunes, Fine 'n' Rosy, Liza brings together some top players, including cousin, Rua Macmillan, winner of Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician Of the Year 2009, Alasdair Taylor of the Folk Award-winning band, The Elephant Sessions, and Robin Abbot of The Mystic Shoes. This intimate album comprises reflective ballads and uptempo songs with catchy choruses, complemented by rollicking trad-style tunes and dreamy instrumentals.

The Vivians 10th Anniversary Demos Album #TheVivians10yr - To mark their 10th anniversary of forming, cult indie punk band The Vivians will release a collection of songs spanning their tumultuous career. The self-titled album, digitally released 26th August 2016, will comprise newly mastered unreleased demos and rarities, recorded between 2006 and 2010, accompanied by a new video and artwork. Formed in August 2006, The Vivians dared to dream big and set out to achieve great things. From their humble beginnings in a basement rehearsal room in Edinburgh, through to splitting in April 2010, the band’s story is one of dreams, misguidance and brotherhood.
Wild Things is the first release from East Lothian Alt-Folk singer songwriter Baron Salmon. The four songs are tender tales of moving on, each one showcasing the musicianship, the fine singing and the mature songwriting of their creator. In these songs we also glimpse some of his influences, from Dylan to Bonnie Prince Billy, to Tallest Man on Earth, whilst never losing sight of the exciting new sound that belongs to Baron Salmon.
Oceans are an anthemic alternative rock band from Glasgow, Scotland. Influenced by varied range of acts; 30 Seconds To Mars, Explosions In The Sky, Thrice, and U2, Oceans' sound is a mix of powerful, soulful vocals with sing along choruses to soaring, melodic lead guitar, and rhythm with a punch.
