Scots musicians supported to perform at SXSW through International Showcase Fund Anna Meredith :: Happy Meals :: PAWS :: Pinact :: Pooches :: Sam Gellaitry :: Spinning Coin :: The Spook School :: Womps The PRS for Music Foundation have announced details of the 37 talented artists , including 9 from Scotland, supported through the International Showcase Fund to perform at this year’s SXSW Music Festival from 13-19 March. This news, which sees a record number of UK artists travelling to Austin, Texas with support from the showcase fund, is thanks to new contributions from PPL, Creative Scotland and Wales Arts International who recently joined Department for International Trade, British Underground, Arts Council England, Musicians Union and Pledge Music as partners of the fund. The annual SXSW event combines music, film and interactive conferences and festivals. Scottish artists Anna Meredith, PAWS, Pinact, Pooches, Sam Gellaitry, Spinning Coin, The Spook School and Womps are among the acts being supported to perform through the International Showcase Fund. Other Scottish acts announced by SXSW include Be Charlotte, Catholic Action and Elle Exxe. Alan Morrison, Head of Music at Creative Scotland, said: “There’s clearly a big appetite for Scottish talent at SXSW, and this year the festival has invited some of our most exciting emerging bands to play in Austin. Creative Scotland’s partnership with the PRS Foundation’s International Showcase Fund is designed to help Scottish musicians make a splash at festivals and expos all over the world, and it’s great to see so many of them heading to Texas this March, where they’ll be able to grab the attention of key figures in the music industry. From the catchy adrenalin rush of The Spook School, to the crunchy guitar chords of PAWS, the electro uplift of Sam Gellaitry and the

crossover hedonism of Anna Meredith, there’s a snapshot here of the many different types of music that are breaking through the surface of the scene. Fingers crossed that the SXSW class of 2017 hits the big time.” Vanessa Reed Chief Executive of PRS Foundation, said: “Through new partnerships this year with PPL, Creative Scotland and Wales Arts International we are able to reach more talented artists than ever before and to respond to their increasing demand for support to attend this career changing, North American industry event. Over 150 UK artists have been invited to attend SXSW this year, demonstrating that British music is in high demand and remains one of the UK’s greatest success stories on an international stage. I look forward to following the exceptionally diverse range of artists we’re funding this year – from jazz and urban to indie and electronic, and the business and creative step-change they can achieve through their trip. To help artists make the most of their time at the festival PRS Foundation hosted, with support from PPL, a pre-SXSW Meet Up / Drinks / Workshop day in February for all artists, bands and managers looking to attend the festival. www.sxsw.com/festivals/music https://twitter.com/SXSW www.facebook.com/SXSWFestival

OLD BLIND DOGS :: album :: 'Room With A View' release date - 28 March @ www.oldblinddogs.co.uk

Old Blind Dogs are back in 2017 with a new record and a new line up. Original member, Jonny Hardie (Fiddle / Vocals) is joined by long term partners Aaron Jones (Bouzouki / Vocals), Ali Hutton (Pipes / Whistles) and new percussion powerhouse Donald Hay.

In their twenty five year history this is The Dogs’ thirteenth release and their first in six years. Back to their best with a recording capturing the infectious energy of their live show, ‘Room With A View’ has excitement, beauty and their trademark powerful vocals. A Scottish band that takes their historical ties seriously, Old Blind Dogs’ new recording captures parts of a tradition that goes back a long way. Great story telling and timeless tunes made for the ups and downs of life ... and dancing! The Dogs have spent a lot of time touring in America and opening track ‘Bunker Hill’ is a

perfect example of tunes travelling from one country to another, adapting to their surroundings as they go. Music by brilliant current tune writers sits seamlessly with tunes from days gone by, from Ali’s ‘Cairo Day’ and Alasdair White’s brand new ‘An Iuchair’ to Breton gavottes and old Scottish pipe reels. Aaron was interested in singing songs from where he lives so there are two from Lionel McLelland, a great poet from Moffat in Dumfries and Galloway, the enchanting ‘Earl O March’s Daughter’ and the dark tale of ‘Sawney Bean’. Jonny was fascinated with the Orcadian history of The Maid of Norway, so ‘A Ring On Her Hand’ by Saltfishforty’s Brian Cromarty has been given the Old Blind Dogs pounding groove treatment. Recorded and mixed at Carrier Waves Studio in Glasgow by Andrea Gobbi. This was a genuinely collaborative and enjoyable process for everyone involved. We’re looking forward to the next chapter in this influential band’s long history.

Old Blind Dogs will be touring the UK in April / May 2017, the USA in September / October 2017 and Germany in November 2017 - full gig details @ www.oldblinddogs.co.uk/tour.asp

Gary released his first solo album How’s the Craic back in 2005 and has since released multiple

collaborative albums with Ewan Robertson (of Breabach fame), allaccordion band Box Club and also has three albums with his current band Mànran. However, after 12 years of working on other projects, he is now back with a full album of self-composed tunes and even some self-penned songs, performed by some of the very best musicians and singers in the Scottish music scene. Having been a professional musician for over 15 years, Innes is no stranger to the world of traditional music and as the newly appointed BBC Radio Scotland

presenter for the iconic music show, Take the Floor Innes is becoming further ingratiated into the Scottish music scene. When asked about the album title, Innes said, “I have called the album ERA as I feel it’s the end of a substantial chapter, or indeed era in my life. Due to my increasing musical commitments, I retired from my beloved sport of shinty in 2014 and for the same reason finished up with the Scottish Fire and Rescue service after 15 and a half years, in 2015. Last year saw the beginning of the new era with the birth of my first little niece Zara and now my second niece is on the way. I am also getting married this year so it feels like life is very much starting to move me in a different, very significant, direction and I wanted to not only recognise this but also to celebrate it”.

melodies and titles that clearly resonate with Innes and his highland home village of Spean Bridge. ERA includes three selfpenned songs which all carry very different stories, sung by Robert Robertson, Alec Dalglish and Siobhan Miller.

The first single from the album 'The Caman Man' is a song all about Scotland’s most indigenous sport, ERA has Hamish Napier on Keys, Shinty and Innes’ journey from the Duncan Lyall on bass, Jarlath start to the end of his sporting Henderson on Uilleann Pipes, Steve career which involved him Byrnes on kit and fellow Mànran captaining the national team on bandmate, Ewen Henderson on many occasions and his local club, fiddle. Innes co-produced the album Fort William to Camanachd Cup with guitar and piping sensation, Ali success. Hutton who also performed on the album. www.garyinnes.com www.facebook.com/gary.innes The album weaves in and out of https://twitter.com/GaryInnes

SNJO with guest Bill Evans :: album :: 'Beauty and the Beast ' release date - out now @ https://snjo.co.uk/snjo-shop/

Tommy Smith originally wrote his epic suite Beauty and the Beast specifically for American saxophonist David Liebman, a fearsome player with a generous heart. This fabulous live recording with the superbly expressive Bill Evans and the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra fully captures the colossal scale of the work, and marks the towering improvisational accomplishments of modern jazz musicians hitting peak form. Bill Evans studied under David Liebman, but they have more in common than that, for both men can claim the privilege of having playing alongside Miles Davis. Today, Evans is one of the most dynamic saxophonists of his generation, and he brings all of his trademark energy and

muscularity to a demanding piece of music. Not least of those demands is the requirement to contrast lyrical beauty with bestial fire and fury.

BEN GLOVER :: gigs :: Glasgow + Edinburgh Touring his latest album :: 'The Emigrant' :: www.benglover.co.uk world. Having to deal with the issues of immigration while going back to the music I grew up playing is how The Emigrant was born. The project is my story — it’s who I am at this time in my life”

Nashville-based Irishman, Ben Glover is in Glasgow and Edinburgh for shows in March and April. His latest album, The Emigrant, is confirming his status as a formidable singer/ songwriter with whom the likes of Gretchen Peters and Mary Gauthier are keen to collaborate. The Emigrant folds his two worlds into one. Co-produced by Glover and Neilson Hubbard (who also produced Leith born Dean Owens’ acclaimed Into the Sea CD) the album features a mix of traditional folk songs and original compositions (including co-writes with Gretchen Peters (with whom he also co-wrote the award winning song Blackbirds), Mary Gauthier and Tony Kerr) as Glover addresses the universal theme and personal challenge that is immigration. When an ocean separates the two halves of your whole, it's worthy of contemplation. Glover says: “Over the past couple of years, I have been going through the process of getting my U.S. Green Card, so the reality of immigration was very present in my world” Not only did he have to slice through web of bureaucratic issues, he also found himself face-to-face with the bigger questions posed by the process. “Contemplations like 'What and where is home?' were never far from my thoughts,” he adds. To work through it all, Glover turned to music. “Around the same time, my interest in Irish roots music and folk ballads was rekindled. My head and heart were back in that musical

Glover's childhood in the sleepy seaside village of Glenarm in the north of Ireland had a soundtrack from both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. When he started playing gigs in the local pub at the age of 13, he played Irish music, of course, but he also slipped in songs from Hank Williams and Johnny Cash. In the summers of his university years. Glover paid his way across the pond by performing Irish folk ballads along with the songs of Christy Moore and the Pogues in the bars in Boston, while back home in the pubs of Ireland he was singing Dylan and Springsteen. In 2009, Glover relocated to Nashville and immersed himself in Southern culture. He began exploring the locations that were closely associated with the music he grew up listening to — Hank Williams' tombstone in Montgomery, Alabama; Johnny Cash's childhood home in Dyess, Arkansas; Robert Johnson's grave in Greenwood, Mississippi. Those experiences informed and infused the soul of his acclaimed 2014 solo album, Atlantic. With The Emigrant, Glover continues to search for his place in the world. In 2015 he was part of the highly acclaimed, award winning documentary film/album The Orphan Brigade (Soundtrack to a Ghost Story), a collaboration with talented Nashville musicians and film makers including Gretchen Peters and Neighborhoods Apart’s Neilson Hubbard and Joshua Britt. There were seven members in this year’s Fèis Chataibh Cèilidh Trail Scott Celli, Helen Gordon, Jo Maclean, Ross Macleod, Johan Mearns, Ailsa Murray and Douglas Murray. and a Scots song by Robert Burns. It was fitting then that the CD was launched at a Burns Supper in Golspie at the end of January.

After their tour was finished the group set up a portable studio in the Fountain Road Church Halls in Golspie where they recorded a five track CD with acclaimed musician and sound engineer Gordon Gunn at the helm. Amongst the tracks are a Gaelic song by the famous Sutherland bard Rob Donn Mackay

Fèis Chataibh Cèilidh Trail Coordinator Mhairi Mackinnon said, “We’re delighted with our young band and all the hard work and effort they’ve put in to this project and I think these efforts are evident in the high quality CD they’ve produced. We are very grateful to the Kilbraur Windfarm Community Benefit Trust for their support with the CD, to Fèisean nan Gàidheal for their help with the scheme and to Gordon Gunn who made the recording a rewarding experience for all involved.” The Fèis Chataibh Cèilidh Trail CD 2016 is now on sale in shops for £6, or directly from the fèis through their Facebook page below or email: feischataibh@yahoo.co.uk www.facebook.com/feis.chataibh

This Girl, This Woman is the debut album by 57-yearold singer Jude Adams, who discovered her talent following a life-changing M.E. diagnosis. The album, which Jude describes as soulful pop with a 60s twist, contains 10 tracks all written and sung by Jude, and produced and arranged by musician Janette Mason. Jude comments: " I always loved to sing, and I always did, but behind closed doors. It was only when I got to 50 that I summoned the courage to start singing in public. And then two years later I was diagnosed with M.E. Performing, work and many ways in which I lived my life had to stop or change significantly. It was debilitating, but led to a lot of personal reflection, and ultimately the silver lining of discovering a passion for songwriting." The Poets & The Beats Guillotine

album cd / download Release Date: Out Now

Guillotine was launched on 10th oct at Summerhall with a massive 19piece line-up including string and brass sextets. This was the only way to do the album justice. Guillotine is the culmination of the band's 8 year weekly residency at Edinburgh's notorious Jazz Bar. This is definitely a huge step up in Mike Kearney's production and writing style. Enjoy! The Poets and the Beats from Musician / producer Paul Armour (ex Seminal Glasgow Surf Pop Band “The Cuban Heels") “The album is very much a beat combo sound. Punchy with grooves using classic retro instruments: Rhodes Wurlitzer & Hammond, vintage amps and guitars. The feel is a mix of styles, melodic & rhythmic. Lyrically quirky with themes of hope and renewal. A recent review from Rock Fm. Scotland described the sound as “Weller-ish” but more refined! It’s all in the ear of the beholder. Enjoy the beats…” Listen/Watch: https://soundcloud.com www.youtube.com Available from: www.birnamcdshop.com www.paularmour.co.uk https://twitter.com/paul497191 www.facebook.com/paul.armour.31

Edinburgh based trio Stillhound announce the release of ‘Bury Everything’ along with single and album opener ‘Spring Conscious,’ a vast and soaring pop track with Foals-esque guitar intricacies and towering chorus. Consisting of Fergus Cook, Laurie Corlett-Donald and Dave Lloyd, the band take inspiration from art, geography and the far flung soundscapes of their homeland, creating an avant-pop record with glacial electronics and packed with unashamed synth pop moments.

Born and brought up in Inverness, Liza has been involved in folk music for many years. Although classically trained in piano, her family background of a big Glasgow-Irish clan of musicians and singers on her father's side, and the Gaelic song tradition of her mother's Isle of Lewis heritage, inevitably meant a strong pull towards the folk scene. On her first solo album of original songs and tunes, Fine 'n' Rosy, Liza brings together some top players, including cousin, Rua Macmillan, winner of Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician Of the Year 2009, Alasdair Taylor of the Folk Award-winning band, The Elephant Sessions, and Robin Abbot of The Mystic Shoes. This intimate album comprises reflective ballads and uptempo songs with catchy choruses, complemented by rollicking trad-style tunes and dreamy instrumentals.

Wild Things

The Vivians 10th Anniversary Demos Album #TheVivians10yr - To mark their 10th anniversary of forming, cult indie punk band The Vivians will release a collection of songs spanning their tumultuous career. The self-titled album, digitally released 26th August 2016, will comprise newly mastered unreleased demos and rarities, recorded between 2006 and 2010, accompanied by a new video and artwork. Formed in August 2006, The Vivians dared to dream big and set out to achieve great things. From their humble beginnings in a basement rehearsal room in Edinburgh, through to splitting in April 2010, the band’s story is one of dreams, misguidance and brotherhood.

Wild Things is the first release from East Lothian Alt-Folk singer songwriter Baron Salmon. The four songs are tender tales of moving on, each one showcasing the musicianship, the fine singing and the mature songwriting of their creator. In these songs we also glimpse some of his influences, from Dylan to Bonnie Prince Billy, to Tallest Man on Earth, whilst never losing sight of the exciting new sound that belongs to Baron Salmon.

Rachel Alice Johnson returns with her third single. Since being selected for Creative Scotland’s ‘Verden Studios Demo Project 15’, Rachel has been steadily winning over critics with her contagiously catchy melodies, with her next single ‘Safe Island’ set for release on 27 May. Listen/Watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dqfieiiDuOU Available from: http://apple.co/1V6vYcq www.twitter.com/rachyjohnson www.facebook.com/RachelAliceJohnsonArts

This CD is the culmination of a much earlier celebration, in music and song, of ‘The Wallace’ in 2005, by way of a commission from Alasdair Campbell who was then with The Tolbooth Music and Arts venue in Stirling. This was followed by another commission by Carolyn Paterson in 2014 to celebrate another icon of history of whom we know a good bit more than the former, Robert de Brus of Norman French stock, the 14th C warlord who became King, regaining Scotland’s place as an Independent nation. This orchestrated progression of music ranges from an arrangement of a classic traditional pibroch theme, in its most appropriate animated and rhythmic presentation, to specially composed and arranged pieces. Melodies are presented on a range of pipes in several different keys, overlaid and blended with percussion, clarsach, cello, soprano saxophone, violin, whistle and vocals. TradFest Edinburgh | Dùn Èideann Edinburgh 26 Apr – 7 May 2017

Orkney 25-28 May 2017

One of Scotland’s longest-running folk festivals, celebrating its 35th outing in 2017, the Orkney Folk Festival is one of the most prolific events in the Scottish and UK

folk calendars, and one of the highlights of Orkney’s diary of community events. An entirely voluntary run event, the festival annually attracts artists from all corners of the folk world - from leading international names to up and coming fresh faces - to Stromness, in Orkney’s West Mainland, for four days of concerts, ceilidhs, clubs, sessions, talks and craic. Artists and audiences are welcomed by and into Orkney’s own thriving folk scene, with Orcadian artists providing around two thirds of the festival programme. Line-up announced across December-March, with tickets on sale in April, around six weeks ahead of the event. This is relatively close to the festival itself, as the festival consists of around 35 individually programmed and ticketed events, rather than offering all-inone day or weekend tickets. Artists visiting the festival perform on several occasions, though, offering a number of chances to catch them over the weekend. www.orkneyfolkfestival.com
